because that is not the kind <strong>of</strong> atmosphere in which the<br />

companions <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> AUiih were living when a<br />

Muhiijir would stand with an Anss against his own father GT<br />

brother or cousin or tribe. It ignores the fact that these<br />

companions are the ones who sacrificed all worldly gains in<br />

order to protect their religion. It is not based on sound knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> these nobles who had been given the glad tidings <strong>of</strong> Paradise.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many events in their lives which prove that these people<br />

were far above looking at things from such a narrow perspective<br />

when dealing with their affairs. It was not the matter <strong>of</strong> family or<br />

tribal representation; they were appointed to the shoora council<br />

because <strong>of</strong> their status in Islam.<br />

Words that were falsely a&ibuted to 'Ali 4<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Katheer said: What is said by many historians such as <strong>Ibn</strong><br />

Jareer and others who narrated from unknown men about 'Ali<br />

saying to 'Abd al-liahmiin: You deceived me; you only appointed<br />

him because he is related to you through marriage and so that he<br />

would seek your advice every day, and that he did not swear<br />

allegiance to 'Uthmiin until 'Abd al-Rahmh ibn 'Awf said,<br />

"Verily, those who give Bay'ah (pledge) to you (@) they are<br />

giving Bay'ah (pledge) to All&. <strong>The</strong> Hand <strong>of</strong> All& is over their<br />

hands. <strong>The</strong>n whosoever breaks his pledge, breaks it only to his<br />

own harm; and whosoeverfulfils what he has covenanted with<br />

Allth, He will bestow on him a great reward" (Al-Fath 48:lO) is<br />

false.<br />
