'UthmAn's conauests in the East 249<br />

<strong>The</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Yazdagird lasted for twenty years, <strong>of</strong> which four<br />

were trouble-free, but the rest <strong>of</strong> the time was spent fleeing from<br />

city to city for fear <strong>of</strong> Islam and the Muslims. He was the last <strong>of</strong><br />

the kings <strong>of</strong> Persia in this world.['] Glory be to the Almighty, the<br />

true Sovereign, the Ever-Living, Eternal One Who will never die;<br />

there is no god but He. All things will perish save His<br />

Countenance, His is the power and to Him you will return.[']<br />

<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> AU2h @ said <strong>of</strong> the kings <strong>of</strong> Persia and<br />

Byzantium:<br />

*: Mi, &X&, 'iX Mi, s: &,<br />

"When Caesar dies there will be no Caesar after him, and when<br />

Chosroes dies, there will be no Chosroes after him. By the One<br />

in Whose hand is my soul, you will certainly spend their wealth<br />

for the sake <strong>of</strong> ~ll&."[~]<br />

News <strong>of</strong> Yazdagird's killing reached a man from al-Ahwk<br />

who was the patriarch <strong>of</strong> Marw, whose name was Eeliya'. He<br />

gathered the Christians around him and said to them: <strong>The</strong> king <strong>of</strong><br />

Persia has been killed, the son <strong>of</strong> Shahriyiir the son <strong>of</strong> Kisra.<br />

Shahriyiir was the son <strong>of</strong> the believing woman Shireen whose<br />

rights and many acts <strong>of</strong> kindness to her fellow-Christians you<br />

acknowledged. This king was connected to the Christians and<br />

moreover the Christians gained a lot <strong>of</strong> glory and honour during<br />

the reign <strong>of</strong> his grandfather Chosroes and before that, during the<br />

reign <strong>of</strong> some other kings before them. He built monasteries for<br />

them and supported them. So we should feel sorrow for the<br />
