allegiance and ' UMn was absent. He was the only one who<br />

conveyed the message <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allsh to the Muslim<br />

prisoners in Makkah, and the Prophet @ approved <strong>of</strong> 'Uthmsn's<br />

refusal to perform taw3 when he sent him with that message.[''<br />

It was narrated from Iy2s ibn Salamah from his father that the<br />

Prophet swore allegiance on behalf <strong>of</strong> 'Uthmh, with one hand<br />

in the other, and the people said: Congratulations to Abu 'Abd-<br />

All*; he can perform tawsf around the Ka'bah safely. <strong>The</strong><br />

Prophet @: "No matter how long he stays in Makkah, he will not<br />

perform tawif until I do."121<br />

'Uthmh was falsely accused <strong>of</strong> not having sworn allegiance<br />

to the Messenger <strong>of</strong> AUsh @ in Bay'at al-Radwh, when he was<br />

absent. This is one <strong>of</strong> the accusations that were made against<br />

'Uthmh when the turmoil (fitnah) arose which was aimed at<br />

deskroying the foundations <strong>of</strong> his caliphate.[31 We will discuss<br />

this in further detail below, in sha All*. It was narrated that Anas<br />

said: When the Messenger <strong>of</strong> All21 g enjoined Bay'at al-Radwh,<br />

'Uthmh ibn 'Affh had been sent by the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allih @ to<br />

the people <strong>of</strong> Makkah. <strong>The</strong> people swore allegiance to him, then<br />

he said: " 'Uthmh is doing an errand for All2h and His<br />

Messenger," and he shuck the ground with one <strong>of</strong> his hands. <strong>The</strong><br />

hand <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> All* @ that represented 'Uthmh was<br />

better than their hands that represented themselves.14]<br />

Intercession <strong>of</strong> 'Uthmiin ibn 'Affiin for 'Abd-Allah ibn<br />

Abi'l-Sarh at the conquest <strong>of</strong> Makkah<br />

When the conquest <strong>of</strong> Makkah came, 'Abd-All* ibn Sa'd ibn<br />

Abi'l-Sarh hid with 'Uthmh ibn 'Affsn, who brought him to<br />

stand before the Prophet g. He said: "0 Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allsh,<br />

accept the allegiance <strong>of</strong> 'Abd-All&." He raised his head and<br />

looked at him three times, refusing each time, but he accepted his<br />
