this?" "Four Dirhams, 0 Ameerul Mu'mineen," <strong>the</strong> man replied. Hadhrat Ali<br />

~ <strong>the</strong>n untied <strong>the</strong> money from his loincloth, handed it over to <strong>the</strong> man and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n left. (1)<br />

With Regard to Clothing <br />

Hadhrat Sa'd bin Ibraheem says, "I saw Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf ~~<br />

wearing a shawl or a suit <strong>of</strong> clothing worth four or five hundred Dirhams." (2)<br />

Hadhrat Qur'ah relates that when he saw Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar ~~<br />

wearing coarse and stiff clothing, he approached him saying, "0 Abu Abdur<br />

Rahmaan! I have brought you s<strong>of</strong>t clothing made in Khurasaan and it would give<br />

me great pleasure to see you wearing <strong>the</strong>m because your clothing is extremely<br />

coarse and stifC" "Show it to me so that I may see it for myself," Hadhrat<br />

Abdullaah bin Umar ~ said. Feeling it with his hand, Hadhrat Abdullaah bin<br />

Umar ~ asked, "Is this silk?" "NO, it is cotton," Hadhrat Qur'ah assured him.<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar ~ however said, "1 fear wearing this because I<br />

fear becoming a boastful snob. verily Allaah detests <strong>the</strong> boastful snob." (3)<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Hubaysh relates that he saw Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar<br />

~ wearing two cloths made by <strong>the</strong> Ma'aaflr (a tribe in Yemen), which<br />

reached halfwaydown his calves. (4)<br />

Hadhrat waqdaanreports that he once heard a person asking Hadhrat Abdullaah<br />

bin Umar~, ''What clothing should I wear?" Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar<br />

~ replied, "Clothing that will nei<strong>the</strong>r cause foolish people to ridicule you<br />

nor cause intelligent people to criticise you (for being extravagant}." ''What type<br />

<strong>of</strong> clothing is that?" <strong>the</strong> man asked. ''What costs between five and ten Dirhams,"<br />

came <strong>the</strong> reply. (S)<br />

Hadhrat Abu Is'haaq reports that he saw Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar ~<br />

wear his loincloth halfway down his calves. In ano<strong>the</strong>r narration, he mentions<br />

that he saw several <strong>Sahabah</strong> ~~ such as Hadhrat Usaamah bin Zaid ~,<br />

Hadhrat Zaid bin Arqam ~, Hadhrat Baraa bin Aazib ~,~ and Hadhrat<br />

Abdullaah bin Umar ~ all wearing <strong>the</strong>ir loincloths halfway down <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

calves.(6)<br />

Hadhrat uthmaan bin Abu Sulaymaan reports that Hadhrat Abdullaah bin<br />

Abbaas ~ once purchased and wore a garment worth a thousand<br />
