started entering <strong>the</strong> fold <strong>of</strong> Islaam. Amongst <strong>the</strong>m were those whom Allaah had<br />

guided and who (gladly) entered Islaam. O<strong>the</strong>rs were those whom <strong>the</strong> sword had<br />

compelled (to accept Islaam). All <strong>the</strong>se people have sought Allaah's protection<br />

and are Allaah's neighbours in his custody. When a man becomes .<strong>the</strong> Ameerand<br />

<strong>the</strong> people (under his command) oppress each o<strong>the</strong>r, Allaah will take revenge<br />

from him if he does not give back to <strong>the</strong> oppressed what <strong>the</strong> oppressors had<br />

taken from <strong>the</strong>m. This is just like <strong>the</strong> case when your neighbOUr's goat is taken<br />

away and you spend <strong>the</strong> entire day with swollen veins out <strong>of</strong> feeling for your<br />

neighbour. In <strong>the</strong> same way, Allaah also lends his support to His neighbours;'"<br />

Hadhrat Raafi ~.~ reports fur<strong>the</strong>r, "It was a year later that Abu Bakr ~<br />

was made <strong>the</strong> Khalifah. I <strong>the</strong>n rode <strong>of</strong>f to meet him. I introduced myself as Raafi<br />

and reminded him where I had been his guide. When he confirmed that he<br />

remembered who I was, I said, 'You used to prevent me from becoming an Ameer<br />

and now you have mounted a much greater task as <strong>the</strong> Ameer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

Ummah <strong>of</strong> Muhammad ~: He replied, 'Indeed, because <strong>the</strong> one who does not<br />

enforce <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong>Allaah amongst <strong>the</strong> people shall earn <strong>the</strong> curse <strong>of</strong> Allaah." (1)<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> ~~ Prefer Fighting Ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

Taking Command<br />

Hadhrat Sa'eed bin Amr bin Sa'eed .bin AI Aas narrates that his uncles Hadhrat<br />

Khaalid bin Sa'eed bin Al Aas ~, Hadhrat Abaan bin Sa'eed bin Al Aas ~~<br />

and Hadhrat Amr bin Sa'eedbin AI AaS ~~ all returned to Madinah from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

posts (as governors <strong>of</strong> various districts) when <strong>the</strong>y heard about <strong>the</strong> demise <strong>of</strong><br />

Rasulullaah ~. Hadhrat Abu Bakr ~ said to <strong>the</strong>m, "None are more<br />

qualified to be governors than those whom Rasulullaah ~ himself appointed<br />

(you should <strong>the</strong>refore return to your postS)." However, <strong>the</strong>y replied, "We shall not<br />

command for anyone." <strong>The</strong>y <strong>the</strong>n returned to Shaam where all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m were<br />

martyred." (2)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Incident that Occurred between Hadhrat Umar<br />

~~~ and Hadhrat Abaan bin Sa'eed ~~~<br />

Concerning an Appointment to Command and<br />

Hadhrat Umar ~~ Dispatches Hadhrat Alaa bin<br />

Hadhrami ~)J.1~ to Bahrain<br />

Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Sa'eed bin Yarboo narrates that when Hadhrat<br />

Abaan bin Sa'eed ~~ returned to Madinah, Hadhrat Umar ~ said to him,<br />

"You have no right to come here and leave your post without <strong>the</strong> permission <strong>of</strong> .<br />

your leader, especially under <strong>the</strong> present circumstances (when people are<br />

revolting and <strong>the</strong> enemy is ready to pounce on US). It however seems that you<br />

have no fear" Hadhrat Abaan ~~replied, "I swear by Allaah that I shall never<br />

accept command from anyone after Rasulullaah ~. If I were to accept<br />
