Zabljak - winter and summer center of an active
holiday
The town of Zabljak is located in the northwest of
Montenegro, in the heart of Durmitor National Park. At
an altitude of 1,456 meters above sea level, the town is
the highest urban settlement in the Southeast
Europe. It is situated in the foothills of Durmitor and
surrounded by 23 mountain peaks over 2,200 meters,
with 18 mountain lakes and canyon of the Tara River,
the deepest in Europe.
The old name of town was “Varezina voda” (Varezina
water), probably due to the strong source of water
spring around which the settlement was formed.
Later it was called “Hanovi” meaning a shelter for
caravan travelers. The current name of the town,
according to legend, comes from Zabljak frogs which
announce the arrival of spring every year with the
croaking. This official name it got in 1870, when in a
single day, the construction of the church “ Sv. Preobraženje”
(Holy Transfiguration), school and captain's
home began.
Today in Zabljak regarding infrastructure there is a
Bus station, Post office, supermarket, bakeries, internet
cafe, 13 hotels, large number of restaurants, cafes,
shops, tourist agencies, tourist apartments, a sports
hall, Culture center with cinema hall, modern waste
recycling center, football stadium and two ski centers.
Durmitor National Park - made of stone, water and
myths
Durmitor is a mountain of an extraordinary beauty. It
belongs to the natural masterpiece. It abounds with
numerous peaks and glacial lakes, surrounded by rich
evergreen forests. The fast and clear rivers of Durmitor
create beautiful canyons, among which the canyon
of the Tara River is one of the most beautiful in the
world.
According to legend, Durmitor mountain was named
after the Celtic word "dru-mi-tor", which means
"water from the mountain". Durmitor is really rich in
water – with rivers and lakes. Eighteen glacial lakes
are scattered throughout the area, and Jovan Cvijic
(geographer) called them "Mountain eyes".

DURMITOR
The highest peak of Durmitor is Bobotov kuk, reaches a height of 2,523 meters.
Durmitor landscapes, economically based on tourism and agriculture, have been preserved from damaging
effects of modern civilization, and due to their beauty and intact nature, they represent rare and authentic
work of nature. Out of winter season, in Durmitor, there are 1,500 species of different herbs - 150 kinds of
herbs, over 40 species of edible mushrooms as well as certain types of tertiary flora from the Ice Age. A large
part of the canyon of Tara is overgrown with coniferous trees, and a special place is reserved for black pine.
The most famous locality where the black pine is part of primeval forest community is located in a part of the
canyon called “Crna poda”. This locality was declared a strict nature reserve. There the trees reach 50 meters
in height, and are up to 400 years old.

Winters are long and cold and summers are relatively
short and fresh in Durmitor. It is interesting
that autumn is warmer than spring. For more than
120 days a year there is a snow layer more than 15
centimeters thick, and in higher areas, like in the
Kalica area, there is a so-called Debeli namet (thick
snow field) which is 200-300 meters long. You can
ski on it even during the middle of summer what
represents a special tourist attraction.
The richness of Durmitor’s natural beauty has not
remained unnoticed even at the World’s level. By
the decision of the International Committee for The
World Cultural and Natural Heritage in Paris in
1980, the Durmitor National Park was included in
the List, while the Tara River and its canyon valley
(182,899 ha), by UNESCO's program "A Man and
Biosphere” in 1977 was included in the World
ecosystem biosphere reserves.
Durmitor is on the list of IBA and IPA areas (Important
Bird Areas - IBA and Important Plant Areas -
IPA).
The necropolises with tombstones are included on
the UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2016.
Plentiful flora and fauna of Durmitor attracts many
nature lovers. This mountain, with surrounding
areas, was proclaimed a national park in 1952.
Durmitor National Park occupies an area of 39,000
hectares.

Today Zabljak is economically oriented towards tourism
and production of healthy organic food. In the
Durmitor town you can taste local specialties such as
skorup (traditional cream), kacamak, cicvara, lamb
and potatoes under the bell, sheep yogurt.
Cicvara
(gruel) is an old traditional Montenegrin meal. It is
prepared from cornflour, traditional cream and
cheese.

Kacamak
is a traditional meal prepared from wheat, buckwheat,
barley or corn flour, potatoes, and served
with cheese or yogurt.

Masanica (popara)
is prepared from dried bread with the addition of
cheese, cream, milk.

young skorup-cream, honey, jam.

Meat under bell
(roast lamb under the bell in earthenware covered
with hot ashes) is certainly one of the most delicious
meal, and if you add some vegetables, delicious
taste never ends and food is never enough…

Traditional “Prljo” cheese
is a real Durmitor original cheese, made from milk
poured in traditional “kalica” dish out of which
skorup-cream is collected. It is very healthy
because it contains little of milk fat.

Kajmak, old Skorup (from sheep and cow milk)
Beside cheese, in these areas, out of dairy products,
the most used are: Kajmak (traditional cream
cheese) or old skorup (from sheep and cow milk).
Especially tasty, but also expensive and less
common is sheep skorup-cream kept in mjeshina.
Skorup kept in mjeshina is called the old cheese,
and saljevak is a young skorup-cream collected
from kalica-special dishes for milk.

Homemade yogurt
which is made of cow or sheep milk.

Smoked dried meat

ZABLJAK IS A WINTER AND SUMMER TOURIST CENTER OF MONTENEGRO. IT WAS BEING BUILT AND HAS
BECOME THE CENTER OF WINTER SPORTS AND IN SUMMER IT IS ESPECIALLY ATTRACTIVE FOR HIKING

Hiking
is a form of physical activity that is based on walking
in nature on various paths or trails but also out
of marked trails. As a form of sport recreation, fast
or sport hiking can enable us, regardless of age and
whether we do or not do sports, to achieve and
keep very good physical and mental condition.
Mountaineering
is hiking and climbing on top of hills and mountains
in the purpose of sport or usual recreational
motives. Mountaineering can be done individually
or in a group, it can also be a climb tour to a relatively
low peak that lasts for a few hours and it can
be a venture of a few days when some extremely
high peaks or several in the series are conquered.

Ski resort "Savin Kuk" has two-lane ski lifts, three
ski lifts, one of which is equipped with night-skiing
reflectors as well as a children's ski lift. This infrastructure
serves a total of 4,6 km of ski trails, with a
capacity of 3,000 skiers. The ski resort has three
blue lanes, one red trail, one black trail and children
trail.
The lower half of the "Savin kuk I" two-seater is
1,550m long, leads in the direction of the top of Savin's
hip and reaches the altitude of 1,907 m. Overall
3,8km of ski slopes (three blue, one red and one
child trail).
The upper seat of the two-seater "Savin kuk II" is
700 meters long and reaches an altitude of 2,213
meters above sea level. It is intended for advanced
skiers, because it encompasses a black track of 800
m long. This cable car represents the winter and
summer tourist attraction.
Ski resorts, ski schools and other accompanying
catering facilities can be used on the ski resort.
There are two restaurants and one cafe bar where
guests can relax and enjoy in the beautiful ambience,
national food and drink.

The Javorovaca ski resort is ideal for beginners,

in a relatively small space will satisfy the most

Auto camp "Mlinski potok" was opened in 1999,
located in the Durmitor National Park. It is located
at an altitude of 1,472 meters, the center of the
town is 2 km away, and 15 minutes from the camp
there is the famous "Black Lake" destination. All the
paths leading to the top of the mountain wreath
start from the camp. The camp is in a protected
nature zone.
Auto camp "Mlinski potok" has 1,000 square meters
of camping space. It has a sanitary facility, hot
water showers, a self-service kitchen, a laundry
room and a storage room. For mobile homes there
are special electrical connections as well as sanitary
facilities. In camp it can be booked: guided

Mountain flowers Day
A traditional tourist-promotional and fun-sporting
event organized by the Municipality, local TO and
the Culture Center from Zabljak. It is held every year
in the first half of July and lasts from 7 to 10 days.
"Mountain Flower Days" include the following
events: skiing on Durmitor "Kalica", selection of the
most well-equipped yard, poetry evening, art exhibition,
flower exhibition, cheese and kajmak exhibition,
homemade products, cultural-entertainment,
sports and recreational program (long jump, traditional
game “throwing stones over shoulders”,
competing in pulling rope, horse racing, little football,
mountain biking, fishing cup...)
