Žabljak - tourist guide

Winters are long and cold and summers are relatively
short and fresh in Durmitor. It is interesting
that autumn is warmer than spring. For more than
120 days a year there is a snow layer more than 15
centimeters thick, and in higher areas, like in the
Kalica area, there is a so-called Debeli namet (thick
snow field) which is 200-300 meters long. You can
ski on it even during the middle of summer what
represents a special tourist attraction.
The richness of Durmitor’s natural beauty has not
remained unnoticed even at the World’s level. By
the decision of the International Committee for The
World Cultural and Natural Heritage in Paris in
1980, the Durmitor National Park was included in
the List, while the Tara River and its canyon valley
(182,899 ha), by UNESCO's program "A Man and
Biosphere” in 1977 was included in the World
ecosystem biosphere reserves.
Durmitor is on the list of IBA and IPA areas (Important
Bird Areas - IBA and Important Plant Areas -
IPA).
The necropolises with tombstones are included on
the UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2016.
Plentiful flora and fauna of Durmitor attracts many
nature lovers. This mountain, with surrounding
areas, was proclaimed a national park in 1952.
Durmitor National Park occupies an area of 39,000
hectares.
