Mushrumps: mushrooms Whereof the ewe not bites; and you whose pastime Is to make midnight mushrumps, that rejoice To hear the solemn curfew: — Prospero (5.1.38–40) Figurative Language Shakespeare uses figurative language as he speaks with metaphors, similes, and personification. Recognizing when his characters are speaking figuratively helps in understanding the play. A metaphor is the application of a word or phrase to somebody or something that is not meant literally but to make a comparison. For example: Alonso compares thunder to an organ-pipe. Alonso The winds did sing it to me, and the thunder, That deep and dreadful organ-pipe, pronounc’d The name of Prosper; it did base my trespass (3.3.97–99). A simile is a figure of speech that draws comparison between two different things using the word “like or as.” For example: Ariel compares Ferdinand’s hair to reeds. Ariel Then all afire with me, the King’s son, Ferdinand, With hair up-staring (then like reeds, not hair), Was the first man that leapt; cried, “Hell is empty, And all the devils are here” (1.2.213–215). Personification occurs when human attributes or qualities are applied to objects or abstract notions. For example: Ferdinand describes the music as creeping. Ferdinand This music crept by me upon the waters, Allaying both their fury and my passion With its sweet air; thence I have follow’d it, Or it hath drawn me rather (1.2.392–395). Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. For example: The repetition of the “f” sound in Ariel’s song.
