The Messenger <strong>of</strong> All\h r said, “Truly, <strong>of</strong> the most complete in<br />
faith among believers is he who is best among them in<br />
character and most gentle and kind towards his wife.”<br />

He r also said, “The best <strong>of</strong> you are those who are best to their<br />
womenfolk. (due to him knowing how his followers would try<br />
to emulate him, he further stressed its importance with the<br />
words,) And I am the best <strong>of</strong> you towards my family.”<br />

In his last sermon, the Ras[l r urged:<br />
“Hear well! Accept my counsel to treat your women well... It is<br />
their right upon you that you are good to them in clothing them<br />
and feeding them.”<br />

<strong>Eve</strong>n if a man disliked his wife, the Book <strong>of</strong> All\h commanded:<br />
“...and live with them in kindness; for if you hate them,<br />
it may be that you dislike a thing<br />
wherein Allah has placed much goodness.”<br />
Qur’\n, 4:19<br />
The Messenger r urged,<br />
“Let no believing man hate a believing woman: if he dislikes<br />
one trait <strong>of</strong> hers, he will like another.”<br />

Isl\m recognised the right <strong>of</strong> a wife to sexual gratification, maintaining<br />
that marriage was not only about fulfilling the needs <strong>of</strong> the man. A<br />
woman could come and complain to the Messenger <strong>of</strong> All\h r <strong>of</strong> not<br />
finding sexual satisfaction from a husband and seek separation from<br />
him on those grounds, as was the case with Tumaymah bint Wahb,<br />
commonly referred to as the wife <strong>of</strong> Rif\`ah. al-Bukh\r| and Muslim<br />
