Gary & Maggie Bilby<br />

Marshall, July 29<br />

Gary and Maggie are a fixture at jams in Michigan<br />

and beyond. Maggie is a Wernick Method cerfied<br />

instructor and hosts jam camps in Michigan; Gary<br />

is beside her every step of the way.<br />

Burke Cole<br />

Marshall, July 29<br />

Burke Cole iniated and promoted the Marshall<br />

Bluegrass Fesval at the Calhoun County<br />

Fairgrounds for many years. He also hosted picking<br />

pares at his home, and could be found jamming at<br />

fesvals all over Michigan.<br />

Dana Cupp, Sr.<br />

Blissfield, August 19<br />

Dana grew up in a musical family and raised his<br />

children among his friends in the bluegrass<br />

community. He was vendor of musical supplies a<br />

fesvals around Michigan, and a guitar player.<br />

Leroy Drumm<br />

Milan, August 4<br />

A Michigan nave, Leroy was best known as a cowriter<br />

with Pete Goble. He also co-wrote songs<br />

with many others. His music publishing company,<br />

Sound of Durmm’s Music, is operated by his son<br />

Roger in Dundee, Michigan


Fred Ellis<br />

Milan, August 5<br />

Fred and Bob White were partners in E & W<br />

promoons, and presented the early version of the<br />

Milan Bluegrass Fesval. Fred also promoted<br />

fesvals in many other locaons.<br />

Pete Goble<br />

Milan, August 4<br />

A Southeast Michigan resident since 1948, Pete<br />

Goble is a treasured writer of bluegrass songs.<br />

Nearly 200 are currently listed at BMI. His tunes are<br />

well known and oen recorded. Many of his well<br />

known songs are collaboraons with Leroy Drumm.<br />

Cayce and Ruth Kiger<br />

Milan, August 5<br />

The Kigers were owners of KC campground in<br />

Milan, Michigan for many years. During their<br />

tenure, the early version of the Milan Bluegrass<br />

Fesvals were promoted there by Fred Ellis and<br />

Robert White.<br />

Mitchell Manns<br />

Charloe, June 24<br />

Mitch was a well know musician in Southeast Michigan<br />

and beyond. He toured naonally with various arsts. In<br />

Southeast Michigan, he was found playing in many<br />

configuraons in country and bluegrass music, appearing<br />

regularly at the Huron Valley Eagles in Flat Rock.

Roy and Fay Mcginnis<br />

Blissfield, August 19<br />

Roy Mcginnis and his band the<br />

Sunnysiders performed in Michigan and<br />

beyond beginning in the 1950s. Fay was a<br />

long me president of the Stanley<br />

Freddie Newby<br />

Blissfield, August 19<br />

Freddie was well known in Southeast Michigan for<br />

his work as a sound man at the Huron Valley<br />

Eagles. He also acted as a sound technician at<br />

fesvals in the area.<br />

Cranford (Ford) Nix<br />

Charloe, June 24<br />

Ford Nix was a banjo player and the inventor of a<br />

double necked banjo. He performed in a variety of<br />

country and bluegrass bands in Michigan and<br />

beyond. He was also known for the down-home<br />

type jokes he told on stage.<br />

Ralph Paige<br />

Milan, August 3<br />

Ralph is a founding member of long-running<br />

Michigan band R&L Express. He provided sound for<br />

Michigan fesvals unl his rerement, and is well


Virgil Shouse<br />

Charloe, June 24<br />

Vigil is a great supporter of young musicians. He<br />

has built over 30 fiddles and 30 mandolins. He<br />

has played with many area bands, including<br />

Jimmy Williams and Red Ellis and the Livingston<br />

County Grass. Virgil’s campsite always seems to<br />

have a good jam going on.<br />

Bill and Pam Warren<br />

Milan, August 3<br />

Bill and Pam are founding members of SMBMA, and<br />

currently the president and secretary, respecvely.<br />

Bill is a well-known photographer of bluegrass<br />

musicians and event and Michigan and beyond.<br />

Robert White<br />

Milan, August 5<br />

“Bob” was a promoter of bluegrass events in<br />

Michigan and Ohio for many years. He also<br />

performed with his band the Candy Mountain<br />

Express. He and Fred Ellis partnered in the early<br />

years of the Milan Bluegrass Fesval.


Southeast Michigan Bluegrass Music Associaon<br />

The Associaon was founded in August 2014 aer a luncheon meeng of<br />

interested people. Aendees were Bobby & Patsy Ann Hutch (Boggs),<br />

Mark Gaynier, Wendy and Freda Smith, Bill and Pam Warren, and Jerry<br />

and Ada Yates. We have been spreading the word about bluegrass in<br />

Southeast Michigan since that me. Find more informaon at:<br />

SMBMA Hall of Honor<br />

The Hall was established in 2016 to honor those who have made<br />

significant contribuons to bluegrass music in Southeast Michigan.<br />
