Carroll For months, Orland Park residents have been eagerly anticipating the opening of the Something Old wedding exhibit at the Village of Orland Park History Museum. The wait was finally over June 3 as the public got its first chance to take a trip down memory lane – via the wedding aisle – and observe local history through matrimonial fashion. Wedding dresses and tuxedoes from the 1890s to the 1980s were on display throughout the museum and each item was either donated or loaned to the collection for this very special show. Many residents offered their heirlooms to the exhibit last fall and their enthusiasm for the final results could be felt throughout the showroom during the opening. Museum curator, Sarah Konzen, inherited the idea for the show when she was hired earlier this year, but it quickly became as much of a passion project for her as it was for all involved. “Everybody’s gone to a wedding or been married so you can really make that personal connection to the exhibit which I really, really like and the fact that so many people were willing to share their pieces – or their family’s pieces – with the museum is so great,” said Konzen. “I think this exhibit provides people with a really nice glimpse into wedding dress history.” Following the opening, the exhibit will run every Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. Museum curator, Sarah Konzen, adjusts an information tag on one of the display wedding dresses during the Something Old exhibit at the Orland Park History Museum, which opened to the public June 3. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media to 1 p.m. through November. “I really want to give people ample time to see the exhibit and have the opportunity to invite their families from out of town,” Konzen explained. “People have waited so long, so I really wanted their items to be on display for a good amount of time.” In addition to experiencing wedding fashion through the years, history museum visitors also learned a bit about each piece and the culture of its time thanks to informative placards throughout the exhibit. The placard next to Orland Park resident Shirley Little Anderson’s wedding dress, which she wore the day she wed Henry Anderson June 27, 1953, let visitor’s know that the gown cost $125, the equivalent of $1,140 today. Anderson was on hand at the opening, accompanied by her family as they posed for photos with the treasured heirloom. The Orland Park History Museum, located at 14415 South Beacon Avenue, is fairly new to the community having first opened its doors in April of 2016. Village Trustee, Kathleen Fenton, enjoys that the facility gives residents an opportunity to see what Orland Park was like over the years. “We’re 125 years old and when you really think about it, that’s a long time,” Fenton said. “There were so many things unique to this community considering it was a railroad stop and it was a pig farm. When you look back and see how now it’s a mega retail center, we’ve come a long, long way.” Following the Something Old show, Konzen plans to open a new exhibit entitled, Life of an Orlander. “I’ll really be honing in on the earliest families of the area and displaying their memorabilia and photos and explaining what life was like 125 years ago,” she said. Fenton is also looking forward to the next show. “We’re trying to bring the community out here and let them experience what it was like back in the day of less hassles and less stress,” Fenton said with a smile.
