Every time I hear this classic song by Chicago played on the radio, I think to myself, what song can better exemplify what summertime living in Chicagoland means for generations of locals? Around this time every year in both my hometown and the surrounding suburbs, you can tell it’s summer as soon as the music emanates from downtown business districts and public park spaces. Since I was a kid, I’ve attended countless free concerts in the parks and tastes of [insert town here] featuring talented cover bands, food and drink booths from popular local vendors, carnival rides and fireworks. Most importantly, these events have brought together families and their friends for neighborly camaraderie, helping foster a strong sense of community and a love for what makes where we live fun and unique. Whether a festival centered on a specific type of food, a celebration of an ethnic group or yes, a simple Fourth of July patriotic gathering, both the many neighborhoods of Chicago as well as several local suburbs seem to know just how to throw a great summer party. While Winnetka and Northfield village and civic groups work tirelessly throughout the year to sponsor great activities for residents of all ages, this summer specifically, Winnetka is keeping the music alive with two new events — the Winnetka Music Festival and the Summer Music Series. In its inaugural year, the Winnetka Music Festival is poising itself to be a family-friendly Lollapalooza of the North Shore type of event, featuring a mix of musicians and singers performing on four stages throughout the Elm Street business district. The free event kicks off on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and picks up for one more day on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Friday night performances will include blues music from Wilmette native Will Tilson and Michigan indie-folk rock band, The Accidentals. Saturday, you can see children’s entertainers at the family stage, rock band Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers and Lollapalooza alums Wild Belle. Food and drink vendors will also be on hand, so bring the whole family out for what’s being promised as the biggest thing to come to Winnetka in years. From first reporting on the event back in April, I can tell that the Village, Val’s List and sponsors have been working tirelessly to make this event turn Winnetka into a premiere music location for North Shore residents and beyond. Additionally, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 4-8 from now through August, the Lincoln Avenue shopping district will be lively with professional musicians from the area entertaining passersby walking in and out of local businesses. Hoffman Commercial Real Estate will be partnering with North Shore Music Institute for bringing casual performances from a variety of music genres to shoppers and diners. A little music while dining and shopping is always a welcome thing! I look forward to hearing peoples’ feedback on the Winnetka Music Festival from our coverage that will be in next week’s paper and I hope that like the memories I have from my neighborhood listening to music in the parks and streets, Winnetkans and Northfielders can now find new music traditions right your own backyard.
