On June 26, 2012 a monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected in Canada’s
National Capital in celebration of the 120th Anniversary of Ukrainian
immigration to Canada, fulfilling the vision of Committee Chair Orest
Dubas. The four statues of Taras, Kateryna, Kobzar and Haydamaky were
donated by renowned Ukrainian-Canadian sculptor Leo Mol and can now be
seen at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine overlooking the Rideau
Canal, a UNESCO-designated world heritage site. The monument design was
created by eminent architect Radoslav Zuk.
The Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko has left a lasting
legacy in Canada’s Capital, Ottawa through its support of this historic project.
Along with a generous financial donation of $40,000.00, the Foundation
was instrumental in unifying the donor community, rallying support and
administering the donations made by hundreds of Ukrainians across
Canada. The Ottawa Shevchenko Monument Committee is grateful for
this partnership and continues to work with the Foundation to pay off final
expenses. Our vision is to establish a Ukrainian Park at the site in time for
the 200th Anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth in 2014.
