Some common reasons Biotech is not without challenges More so when you move from Big Pharma Reasons for the transition • You decided to move • You had to move • Your group was downsized • Big Pharma reorganized and your job disappeared • etc It is important to note that every reason is valid The transition should be about the next opportunity, not about judgment on the reason What you bring from Big Pharma Broad experience and generally less depth Exposure to multiple products Exposure to life cycle management Exposure to highly developed processes and procedures Exposure to many decision types and decision making bodies Experience in matrix organizations Structure and process driven bureaucracy Bureaucracy exist too in most Biotech but is more people driven rather than process driven
Suddenly, the following generally no longer apply • Sense of size and safety • Large teams of people • Lots of products to work on • Large support infrastructure • Every process in place and developed You cannot try and implement everything that is not there Big Pharma processes in a small Biotech can paralyze the business And the following generally apply • You are suddenly in a much smaller organization • You wonder if you have job security • The teams are smaller • You may be working on only one product or part of one • There is limited support infrastructure • Not every process is in place or developed to the same extent You have to try and implement everything that the Biotech needs All these can suddenly become positives and you may really be in an entrepreneurial setting Transition means change Dealing with change that is forced on you • Some people are energized • Others fold
