One familiar trend, at this time of the year, is the perfecting of the fine art of hibernation. In light of
that, we’ve toned down the number of Estate events during the cooler months.
Another trend, predominantly due to the lusciously long school break this month, is for many
Featherbrooker’s to seek somewhat warmer pastures.
Wherever July has you, take time to unwind, recharge and regroup, for indeed the second half of
the year always tends to take on a speed of its own.
and entertainment unsurpassable. From Gangnam style dance-off’s to pop quizzes, to team games; there
were exceptional prizes a plenty for everyone to indulge in.
Bianca Crawford’s reputation precedes her and she has become known to many children who embrace her
rapport with them. What an absolute treat to have an evening completely run by such a remarkable person who
Compliance
Trailers, Boats, Caravans
and General Maintenance
By Ivor Gates, Compliance Manager
Despite a warning to all residents, circulated in March 2017, there seems to be a general attitude of disregarding notices
concerning non-compliance with the rules, especially the parking of trailers and boats and to a lesser extent, caravans.
If, however, security impose a penalty levy for any of the offences related
to the parking of trailers, boats and caravans, residents are quick to
appeal to the estate manager for leniency, claiming ignorance or
claiming to not have received the notice sent out on the Glovent portal.
The strange thing is that the “appeal” e-mails are sent from the very
e-mail address to which the notification was sent.
Secondly, there are residents who are faced with having to live next to
another resident where the paint is peeling from the walls and the house
is falling into a general state of disrepair. Not only is it not pleasing on
the eye, but it also has an influence on the aesthetic appearance of the
area and on the property values.
Not complying to the rules, (which incidentally, every resident has
bought into by residing on this estate), is very unfair to those who do
their utmost to abide by the rules and who have elected to live here
because of the rules.
Below are the rules as extracted from the Resident Rule
Book.
3.3.3 Maintenance of Property
The owners of all property on the estate are required to maintain
their buildings, gardens and vacant stands in a proper state of repair,
decoration and tidiness. Where a property is leased, then the owner will
remain responsible for the maintenance of the property as stipulated
above. Where external redecoration is to take place then in all cases the
proposed colours shall be submitted to the Joint Aesthetics Committee
as formed and appointed by the Board of Directors of the Association
(hereinafter referred to as the Aesthetics Committee”) for approval.
Birds in the Estate by Udo Sachse
Failure to comply with the entire Rule as set out will attract a penalty levy
as set out in the schedule of penalty levies as adopted and amended by
the Association from time to time.
3.3.4 Caravans, Trailers, Boats, Trucks
Members shall ensure that caravans, washing lines, trailers, boats and
any objects deemed to be an eyesore are kept and/or stored out of the
public view and screened from neighbours. No delivery or construction
vehicles, 2 tons and larger, may be parked or stored on the Estate or at
the Clubhouse overnight.
We urge you to heed this notice as we will no longer entertain
accusations that we impose penalties without first issuing a
warning!
The following process takes place in event of a rule violation;
a) Security will impose a penalty levy by issuing a written penalty
notice to the owner/occupant of the relative stand
b) The penalty notice will be communicated to the office
c) The penalty will then be added to the levy account of the
offender (if there are tenants the penalty levy will be added to
the owner’s levy account)
d) The penalty becomes payable with the next levy payment
Please be advised that it is in the interest of every resident that the rules
be observed to ensure that Featherbrooke Estate remains the soughtafter
address it currently is. Your cooperation will be highly appreciated!
The use of safe rodenticides in the estate
Having recently noticed an increase in rat activity around the clubhouse and in other areas, it was decided to make use of “bait stations”
to address the problem and prevent the spread of disease, especially around our restaurant area.
In consultation with a pest control company, it was decided to use “Racumin” as a safe “owl compatible”, rodenticide. The active ingredient
of Racumin is highly toxic to mammals, however it is of insignificant toxicity to birds.
“The Griffon Poison Information Centre” endorses Racumin as an effective rodenticide that significantly reduces the risk of secondary
poisoning to owls and other raptors due to its low avian toxicity.”
We strongly recommend using a reputable, certified and registered pest control company if you should wish to get rid of any unwanted
rodents!
Time you enjoyed wasting
is not wasted.
– John Lennon
Senior Winner - 'Design In Excellence' by Shane Wilken
So, the important question would be to ask yourself
how you spend your time. You may find a few things
you’d like to change. The next time you’re tempted to
say “I don’t have time”, change it to “I choose not to
spend my time on that” and observe what comes up
for you. After all, it’s your choice! Or is it? Are you
valuing your time or giving it away to somebody else’s
dreams?
Junior Winner - 'Berg Dam' by Graham Spence
24 hours...
It could be argued that the most valuable
commodity you have, outside of your health, is
your TIME. In fact, the way you use your time
could actually have a major impact on things
like your health.
Every day each one of us is gifted with 24 hours of time,
and it’s how we use that resource that depicts the true
value of it. How often do we hear the words “I don’t have
time”? We all have 24 hours! It’s what we choose to do
with those 24 hours that really separates the successful
from the rest.
Think about it. Most things are re-obtainable. You can
make more money, buy another house, even find another
life partner, but you can never ever recuperate the TIME
you’ve spent. You can’t buy it, rent it, borrow it, store it,
save it, renew it, invent it or multiply it. All you can do
is spend it. There is no way you can “save” time either.
When people say they are “saving” time, they simply
mean they’re spending less time doing something.
So, you’re the only one who can ensure that you spend
your time wisely. How you spend your time reveals where
you place your highest values. Don’t let time trick you.
No one ever seems to have enough time, yet everyone
has all the time there is. Nothing is easier than being
busy, but the essence lies in the accomplishment related
to that busyness.
On his debut night of being a member, Gerrit Strydom
wowed the judges with his image Spring Is Near.
Gerrit didn’t only meet 1-star requirements of good
exposure and focus; he also surpassed all expectation
of a 4-star worker, winning the junior category. His
image is beautifully composed and tells a lovely story.
Wow! Well done, Gerrit!
Bruce Paterson’s Wildebeest Sunset, winner of the
senior section, takes on a mystical sense with its
low lighting and dark space. Beautifully lined by the
highlights of backlighting and the warmth of the early
morning light, this image tells a magnificent story,
almost transporting to the wild essence of the bush.
Beautifully timed and captured, Bruce.
Our next meeting ...
All meetings are on the last Thursday of every month throughout
2017. The set subjects are as follows:
July – ‘Long Exposure’
August – ‘Reflections’
What is Paleo?
Raw Snack Balls
The easiest, most versatile, fool proof, and delicious
paleo cassava flour tortillas! Mix up and cook in
5 minutes! Make them thick, thin, crisp, or soft! Gluten
free and dang delicious!
Ingredients
2 cups cassava flour
1 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons sea salt
2 teaspoons garlic granules
fresh cracked pepper to taste- about 1-1 1/2 teaspoons
olive oil for cooking
Method
1. Combine ingredients for the tortillas in a medium size
bowl and mix together until well combined. The dough
should stick together and be a smooth consistency.
2. Divide the dough into 10 equal parts and shape into
balls. On a piece of baking paper roll and pat each
section of dough into a thin tortilla. You can use your
hands or a rolling pin for this. If the dough is sticking
sprinkle lightly with cassava flour.
3. Heat a fry pan on the stove over medium/low heat.
Drizzle the pan lightly with olive oil for cooking.
4. Cook the tortillas for about 1-3 minutes in each side
until it reaches desired consistency. You can make
them crisp or soft.
The term “paleo” is short for Paleolithic. Our Paleolithic ancestors
didn’t suffer from the same chronic diseases and health issues
that we do today, which probably has a lot to do with the food
they ate.
The paleo diet is focused on eating real, whole foods that provide
your body with the nutrients it needs, while avoiding processed
and refined foods.
Even though it’s called a “diet,” paleo is not so much a diet as
it is a lifestyle. The paleo lifestyle aims to improve your overall
health and well-being while minimizing your intake of foods that
hurt your body.
Going paleo is a constant learning process: you are always
gaining new knowledge on the foods that support a healthy
lifestyle.
Ground Chicken & Spinach
Stuffed Mushrooms
Ingredients
2 teaspoons coconut oil
6 large portobello mushroom caps, cleaned and gills
removed (gently scrape it out with a spoon)
1 small onion, diced
250 g ground chicken
Handful of baby spinach leaves
6-8 grape tomatoes, sliced (and roasted if you prefer)
Salt and pepper, to taste (Italian seasoning would be
great too!)
Method
1. In a large pan over medium high heat, melt about 2
teaspoons of coconut oil. Place the mushrooms into
the pan and let cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
Flip them halfway through. Set aside on a plate.
2. In the same pan, add the onion and sauté until
softened, about 3 minutes. Then add the ground
chicken to the pan and break it up into small pieces
with a spatula or wooden spoon. Cook until it's all
cooked through. Sprinkle salt and pepper and other
seasonings, if using.
3. Remove from heat and add the baby spinach leaves.
The residual heat should wilt the spinach easily.
4. To assemble: use a small spoon and scoop the chicken
spinach filling into the caps of the mushrooms. Top
with grape tomatoes. Serve warm!

Roodekrans Black Eagles
Photographs by Garth Heydenrych and article by Johann van den Berg
Very Encouraging
Behaviour
During his regular Tuesday morning monitoring duties, one of our
monitors filed a very interesting report. It seemed that on the morning of
9 May, the nest was not left unattended for any period.
This information prompted Ernest and myself to try and get a better view of the nest without
disturbing the eagles, but alas, our efforts brought no results, and we could not confirm that
an egg was laid.
The weekend of 12-14 May saw Gauteng gripped in a nasty cold front, but our diligent
monitors did their duty whenever possible, and once again it was reported that the nest
was never left unattended. Another interesting fact was that photo taken by a camera trap,
depicted one of the eagles having a meal on the nest in the rain.
As mentioned in a previous report, it is not uncommon for the female to eat on the nest just
before egg-laying. This seems to be a sort of practise run for when she must feed the chick.
Subsequent reports by our monitors, confirmed that the nest was never left unattended,
which is really a good sign that there may be eggs in the nest.
As we have no idea if, and when the first egg was laid, we have no way of calculating the
hatching date. This uncertainty adds a whole new challenge.
If we can observe the first delivery of prey to the nest, and possibly see Makatsa feeding the
new chick, we can backtrack 44 days, and determine the date on which the first egg was
laid. Isn’t that just a great prospect?
We will then also be able to calculate a period for the fledging to leave the nest.
We are going to do our best to cover the period we expect the hatching to take place, and
just maybe one of the monitors will be able to see that first delivery to the nest.
Winter Gardening
While winter can be a time for closing your eyes and waiting for spring in your
garden, it can also be a time of great fulfilment and busy preparation for the
season ahead. In this article, we explore some key winter gardening tips and
ideas to get the most of out your garden.
For more information on gardening,
landscaping please contact:
Chris Williams: 083 225 7451
www.catscapeslandscapes.co.za
This is the time when the scarifying for the lawn should be booked and the spring treatments of the
lawn and gardens should be planned. The irrigation systems should be serviced and checked and
all the faulty sprinklers replaced. The wayward branches on the trees should be cut back and any
stumps on the trees should be cut level with the trunk.
Care must be taken that all the frost covers that are needed are in place.
It is a good time for all that annual maintenance on the furniture, painting the bird bath, removing
weeds from the paving, etc.
It is time to give thought to the growing season ahead. New growth, new beginnings. plan a new
garden, new water feature, try some new annuals in spring, refurbish your lawn. Careful thought
should be given to the desired theme and look of the garden. This is done through the planting,
using different texture and colours.
While some argue that all colours go together in the garden, it is important to follow the basic rules
of the colour wheel so as not to create conflict for the eyes… this is your sanctuary.
Decide on whether the theme is formal or informal, place the structures (water feature, bird baths,
benches, etc.) in place and then work around them to create balance. Decide the beds are going
to be straight or curved and prepare them accordingly. Is there going to be edging? and if so what
kind?
The structural aspects of the garden can still be installed during the cold months and will assist in
the anticipation of the season ahead and help you to visualise the future garden.
Fight Sun Damage with the Power of Light with Venus
Versa IPL Treatments!
It is so wonderful to enjoy the warmth of the sun on our skin, especially after a
long, cold winter or while enjoying a day at the beach, that it is all-too-easy to
forget the damage that those warm rays are doing deep within the tissues of
the skin. Unfortunately, many of the changes that we notice on our face over
time are actually caused by sun damage triggered by either natural ultraviolet
(UV) rays from the sun or artificial UV rays from tanning beds/booths. Also
known as “photoaging”, we often seen sun damage in the form of:
• Irregular pigmentation problems on the hands, arms, face, chest, and
shoulders
• Sun spots, liver spots, age spots, and brown spots
• Melasma (patches of darkened skin)
• Rough, uneven skin tone and texture
• Spider veins, broken or dilated capillaries, and/or rosacea
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Enlarged pores
Benefits of IPL Treatment with Venus Versa
Venus Versa is a powerful, highly effective Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
skin treatment that harnesses the power of light to reverse these effects
of sun damage, as well as the natural aging process. We treat the
skin differently to other Salons as we incorporate a Radio Frequency
treatment first to stimulate the production of Collagen and Elastin
giving us a much more effective outcome improving and enhancing the
colour, tone, texture, and condition of your skin.
Other benefits of IPL with Venus Versa include:
• Non-invasive and non-ablative
• One treatment can be completed in less than 20 minutes\without
RF
• No downtime or recovery time: return to your normal activities
immediately
• Built-in cooling system to ensure your comfort during treatment
• Powerfully reduces minor pigmentation problems like brown spots
with just 1 or 2 treatments
• Safe and effective for all skin types
• Treat discoloration and other signs of premature aging without
surgery or downtime.
All Venus treatment devices used are USFDA, Health Canada and
European CE Approved.
Hairfree is Carefree
Unwelcome hair growth is not only unattractive, it’s also a source of
embarrassment for both men and women. For women it’s usually facial hair
011 662 2473
Rachel: 082 852 8885
but it may also include the underarms, legs or bikini line.
For men, it might be ear, shoulder or back hair; it might be
too long on their arms or even too thick on their chest.
Shaving, depilatories, electrolysis, waxing and hit-or-miss
home devices are all available but they’re either out of
date or simply out of favour. Venus Versa is re-setting the
standard of Intense Pulsed Light hair removal:
• Superior cooling effect to increase patient comfort
• Larger treatment area capability, reducing treatment
time
• Fast, effective, virtually pain free
• No side-effects and no downtime
Hair grows in stages and it’s only during its growth cycle,
when the hair is still in its follicle, that the hair removal
process is most effective. While each session will
noticeably reduce the appearance of hair, several sessions
are necessary for your best outcome.
For smoother, sleeker and faster hair removal, Venus
Versa is safe for all skin types, tones and ethnicities and
provides permanent hair reduction. Now you can always
be hair-free and care-free; ready for your close-up… or just
comfortable about getting close.
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe? The Venus Versa Laser
Hair Removal System has been cleared by the FDA for
permanent hair reduction on any skin type, including tanned
skin. It has been successfully used to treat hundreds of
thousands of patients worldwide. Results on any treatment
may vary per individual as everybody is different and may
respond differently to treatments mentioned.
How Many Treatments of Laser Hair Removal are
required? Most patients need at least 6-8 effective
treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
Am I a candidate for Laser Hair Removal? Both men and
women seek laser hair removal to remove unwanted hair.
Hair removal is commonly done on underarm, pubic area,
legs, abdomen, lip, chin, back, buttocks, thighs, face,
neck, chest, arms, and toes.
Laser technology works by targeting dark pigment.
Therefore, it works best on dark coarse hair. The darker
and more coarse the hair, the better the results.
The best candidates are patients treating areas with dark
coarse dense hair growth.
Results on any treatment may vary per individual as
everybody is different and may respond differently to
treatments mentioned.
Our People
Exploring the Kgalagadi
Story and photographs By Udo Sachse
Autumn and winter are the seasons for the arid parks, especially the
Kgalagadi.
We spent a week there and managed to get a couple of nights in the wilderness camps
which are small, unfenced and exquisitely peaceful. Had the pleasure of seeing about 6
lion cubs parade down the road in front of our tent. It was unfortunately too dark to get
pictures.
But as you see, we were rewarded with incredible sightings, how often do you see two
sets of Cheetahs in one trip?
Can’t wait for July when we go do the Fish River Canyon hike, via Augrabies and spend
another week in the Kgalagadi on our way back.
