FOURTH OF JULY FUN FACTS!
While most Americans know that the U.S.’s birthday is celebrated on
Independence signed it on the Fourth of July. For more fun facts about
America’s Independence Day, keep reading:
• How many people signed the Declaration of Independence on
July Fourth? Two.
actually sign the document? 8/2/1776
White House? Thomas Jefferson
FIRE WORKS
We urge residents to be respectful of neighbors and stop setting off
fireworks no later than midnight on July 4 th . Independence Day is on
a Tuesday this year and many people will have to work the following
day, so please be sure end the festivities at a reasonable hour.
CLEAN UP YOUR FIREWORKS DEBRIS!!!! Every New Year and 4 th
of July,we find mounds of firework debris left in the park and common
areas as well as the streets. So please clean up after your celebration!
Many animals are terrified of the loud noises created by fireworks,
so please keep your dogs and cats inside for the night. 4 th of July is
traditionally one of the busiest holidays for animal shelters because
so many animals get loose trying to run and hide from the noise and
commotion - so avoid the problem by leaving them inside!
CRIMEWATCH
Please remember not to leave valuables in your vehicles and keep all
doors locked. Garages left open are like a candy store to a criminal. At
night, leave a light on to help deter criminals from trying to break in.
Let’s be watchful for our families and neighbors and if you see something
suspicious, don’t hesitate to contact the Sheriff’s department at
713-221-6000 for non-emergency calls or 911 for emergencies.
Please contact www.pct3.com and report damaged sidewalks,
streets, curbs or to report sink holes in your area. Once you’ve
logged onto the site, scroll down to “Service Request” where they
will ask you to input your name, address and subdivision. There
will be a drop box for you to pick the type of service requested. This
website is full of information regarding road closures, road projects,
community information and more.
PARKING
Our streets are so narrow that when vehicles are parked on both
sides of street, it makes it difficult for homeowners to get in and out
of their driveway or drive down street. Please park your vehicles in
drive way and ask guests to park as close to curb as possible on one
side of street when visiting. By having guests and homeowners park
on one side, this allows emergency vehicles to maneuver down the
street and avoid delays in response time to an emergency. Reminder,
vehicles parked on street must be parked in the direction of traffic and
you may not park within 15’ of a fire hydrant. Failure to abide by these
rules may result in a parking ticket. Also when picking up your children
at the elementary school please be courteous and don’t block
streets or homeowner’s driveways and adhere to the street signs.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have
bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos,
petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t
let seedlings dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue
black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom
production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove
them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis,
lantana, oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of
about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead
of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in
your yard to measure during waterings.
ingredients. These healthy substitutions can help you cut down on
low-fat/fat-free yogurt or use fat-free sour cream
OATMEAL: ONE FOOD, MANY BENEFITS
Oatmeal is a power food as it delivers both
a bang for your buck and numerous health
benefits. During the summer months, crispy,
cool corn flakes may sound like a better
choice vs. a hot bowl of oatmeal, but read
on. You’ll be glad to make the switch:
1. Oats contain both soluble and insoluble
fiber. Soluble fibers help lower cholesterol and stabilize blood glucose
levels. The insoluble fiber in oats provide a “moving” experience by
curtailing constipation and improving intestinal health.
2. Oats make an easy, balanced breakfast. One cup of cooked oatmeal
(1/2 cup of uncooked) contains about 150 calories, four grams of fiber
(about half soluble and half insoluble) and six grams of protein. To
boost protein further, my favorite way to eat oatmeal is with a swirl of
almond butter nestled within. This powerful combo will keep you away
from that mid-morning visit to the vending machine.
3. Oats provide important minerals. Nutrient-rich oatmeal contains
thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, selenium and iron.
4. Oats are naturally gluten-free, but check with manufacturers to ensure
that their products are not made using the same equipment as other
potentially contaminating grains.
5. Oats could help you control your weight by keeping you feeling fuller
longer. Choosing whole grains could squash hunger and simultaneously
provide that pleasant full feeling. NOTE: monitor portion sizes.
GREEN CORNER
Tip of the Month -
“Get to know your HVAC system”
Summer is here, which means energy costs tend to rise (as temperatures
climb!). Here are some energy saving tips from
https://energy.gov.
• LOWER your thermostat temperature in the winter
and RAISE it in the summer:
During the winter, you can save energy by setting your thermostat to
68 degrees when you’re at home and awake and using lower settings
when you’re away or asleep. This will help your furnace not to run
continuously.
In the summer, on the other hand, set your thermostat to 78 degrees if
you can and use ceiling or portable fans. Fans move the air and make
the room feel four to six degrees cooler and use much less energy than
the air conditioner. Remember, setting your thermostat to a lower
temperature than normal will not cool your home faster!
• Choose the RIGHT thermostat:
Choosing the right energy star qualified programmable thermostat can
deliver savings without sacrificing comfort. A programmable thermostat
helps your house to never get too cold or too hot. When properly
programmed, these thermostats can save up to 15% in cooling costs.
If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, don’t worry! You can
manually adjust the temperature on your air conditioner to the recommended
temperatures.
• CLEAN or REPLACE your HVAC system’s air filter:
Air filters remove dust and allergens from the air before returning it to
your rooms through your A/C unit, so it is a critical component of the
system. Unfortunately, they can often become clogged with dust and
debris and eventually block the free flow of air, reducing the system’s
efficiency. Remember that dirty filters are the number one reason most
HVAC systems begin to operate inefficiently.
A dirty air filter uses more energy than a new clean one, which means a
higher electricity bill for you. By keeping your air filter clean and in good
condition, it is estimated that you can save up to 15% on utility costs.
It is recommended that you check your filter’s condition and change
it once a month, especially if you run your unit six months a year to
year-round, if you have pets or if you have a large family. More activity
means more household dust, dirt and debris.
• INSPECT your HVAC system:
Make sure you service your unit at least once a year and head off costly
problems. This sort of evaluation is best left to the professional, unless
the homeowner has had the appropriate training. A furnace/HVAC unit
contains moving parts so it is important that belts are not cracked,
ventilation ductwork is not cracked or rusted and components, such
as coils and fans are adequately lubricated.
With a clean, inspected A/C system you will preserve energy, lowering
your utility bills and cooling your home efficiently.
BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD
THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help
prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system
by fostering supportive mentoring relationships. These young people
range from the ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime
and turn these young lives around to develop a positive attitude for
positive results.
Our mentors must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour
a week for one year and submit to fingerprinting and a background
check. There are many zip codes available in and around the Katy
area with suitable times of the week for mentors to meet with their
assigned youth. We are in need of loving and caring mentors for
young people that feel as though they are alone in this world. Please
consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that could possibly
change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only hope.
Contact Denise Kennedy at CrossroadsVolunteer@hcjpd.hctx.net or
713-295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program,
SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a
horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through
the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their
shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.”
Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted
activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental
acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see
miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated
volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities
in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live
longer, healthier, more productive lives.
In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers
donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual
Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers
are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE
Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the
Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition
at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback
riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse.
Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor
is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and
better equipped to fully live their lives, each day.
STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an
all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and
homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers
search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless
and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the
US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide.
According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on
the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless
youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which
provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the
homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to
hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me
at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For
Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org.
12 Westfield Terra | July 2017
The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous
caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want
them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
ADOPT A US SOLDIER
and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our
freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive
to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving
in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by
its volunteer workforce located across the United States.
After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as
follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III
When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range
from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages
full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most
important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages
COMMUNITY OF LIFE VOLUNTEERS IN PARTNERSHIP
AT KISSITO CANE ISLAND
Imagine if you had no one to share or even worse, you were limited in
your ability to participate in the activities you love? Now, imagine how
you would feel if someone volunteered to spend time with you and
shared your enthusiasm? At Kissito Healthcare, we realize that when
you make a difference in someone else’s life, you make a difference in
your own. We recognize that our volunteers not only make a difference
in the lives’ of our patients, they are the backbone of our Community
of Life activities program.
We invite you to be a part of the Volunteers in Partnership program
at Kissito’s Cane Island facility in Katy, Texas. All of our programs and
services serve a common goal: a better quality of life for the patient
and ultimately isn’t that the goal we all have for ourselves? Kissito Cane
Island is a post acute and long-term care facility.
Here are just a few ways you can volunteer:
• Like to read? Read to someone who has lost the gift of sight.
• Like to play games? Our residents are always looking for participants.
• Have a green thumb? Help us with our table top garden.
• Got talent? Come entertain our residents and share your talent.
• Do you love a party? Help with monthly events is always needed.
• Got a friendly pooch? Ask how pet visits can boost a patients’ day.
• Are you crafty? Help out with our arts and craft activities.
• History Buff? Hear stories from those who were there.
If you would like to volunteer your time and/or make a donation, please
contact Vicky Ashbrook for more information. Kissito Cane Island is
located at 21727 Provincial Blvd. Katy, Texas 77450. The facility phone
I FOUND A BABY SQUIRREL, NOW WHAT?
By Cheryl Conley,
TWRC Wildlife Center
If you find a baby squirrel, check for the following:
• Is it bleeding, have an open wound or a broken bone?
• Is it covered in fly eggs (they look like grains of rice)?
• Is it cold, wet or crying?
Baby squirrels at this age must be kept warm. Heat a towel in the
microwave or place uncooked rice or bird seed in a sock and warm
in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Wrap the sock in a soft towel
and place it with the baby in an open container like a small box or
plastic container.
Place the box IN A SAFE PLACE OFF THE GROUND near where you
found the baby or under the tree with the nest if you know which tree
it is. You can also attach the container directly to the tree but MAKE
SURE IT IS SECURE. Keep children, dogs and cats out of the area.
Observe the baby squirrel for the next six to eight hours of daylight.
Reheat the towel or rice/birdseed bag every two hours. Has the
mother returned to retrieve her baby?
If YES ... congratulations! If NO, bring the box with the baby inside.
Continue to keep it warm until you can bring it to us.
REMEMBER: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FEED THE SQUIRREL
OR GIVE IT WATER!
TWRC Wildlife Center is your resource for wildlife-related questions.
They also serve as an emergency wildlife care facility should you
find animals in need of help. If you have any questions, please call
713-468-TWRC. You can also find useful information at
www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.
If the answer is YES to any of the above, the squirrel is likely injured.
Bring it to us as soon as possible. If NO, the next step is to determine
its approximate age to see if you need to intervene.
Does the squirrel have a fluffed-out tail (like a bottle brush)?
Is the body longer than 6” (not including the tail)?
If the answer is YES to these questions, this is likely a juvenile squirrel.
You do not need to intervene. Even at the young age of 10 to 12 weeks,
the squirrel is already independent and on its own. If NO, this is an
infant squirrel. You will need to help reunite the baby with its mother.
GIRL FROM SWEDEN NEEDS HOST FAMILY
Hi neighbors! I am a Local Coordinator for STS Foundation, a non-profit
exchange student placement organization. I believe the exchange of
cultures among high school students is so important. I am looking for
host families for the 2017-18 school year.
Meet Emilie from Sweden….
I’m a kind and happy person who always tries to see things from the
positive side. I’m a helpful person with a good ability to work with
others. My friends have described me as a social person and I have to
agree with them. I really like to talk and meet new people. In general,
I’ve always been very motivated and responsible over my school work.
When getting an assignment, I always want to perform as good as I can. I
love to challenge myself and to try new things, that way I always develop
as a person. This is one of my many reasons going on an exchange year.
To do something totally out of my comfort zone and to try new things
is something I’m so excited for.
My hobbies include hanging out with friends and family, listening to
music, dancing, working out, watch series, reading and baking. I love
hanging out with my family and friends and do that every opportunity
that I get. I start and end everyday by listening to music. Music is something
that helps me to express how I’m feeling, while at the same time
gives me energy. I also have a big interest for dance, especially tap dance
which is the only thing that I dance right now. I love to move and jump
around even though I may not be the best dancer in the world. I also
read on a daily basis. My favorite kinds of books are teen fiction and
fantasy novels. I also watch a lot of series - all different kinds of them.
It’s something that I love to do and makes me feel relaxed. Also, I love
to bake. When I was younger I used to bake every day after school but
now I only bake for special events, like family gatherings.
Emilie and others like her are looking for a host family for the year. If
you are interested in hosting her or any other student, please give me
a call at 832-455-7881 or email me at vicki.stsfoundation@gmail.com.
I can answer any questions you might have. Remember one year of
hosting leaves a lifetime of memories!
ST. JOHN XXIII NEWS
ST. JOHN XXIII COLLEGE PREPARATORY BAND EARNS SWEEPSTAKES AWARD AT TAPPS
The St. John XXIII College Preparatory band earned a Sweepstakes Award at the TAPPS State Concert and Sight Reading Contest held in
Temple, Texas on April 21 st . The band, under the direction of Mrs. Wendy Elko, received a Superior rating on stage and a Superior Rating in
sight reading, which qualified them for the award. Tying with Beaumont Monsignor Kelly High School, the band also placed second in the
6A category, making the results even sweeter with this all-time top honor for the band at the state contest.
Each school performs from a prescribed music list in front of a panel of judges, who rate their performance between I (Superior) and V
(Poor). In TAPPS 6A on stage, bands are awarded points based on the difficulty of the music along with the judges’ rating and only receive
points for Superior ratings. Following the stage portion, the bands must play a piece they have never seen before in front of a second panel
of judges, with only a 10-minute verbal instruction period by the band director. Again, only a Superior rating is awarded points.
St. John’s band earned 110 points for their stage portion, 50 points for their sight reading portion and 25 points as Sweepstakes winners
for a total of 185 points, tying them for second place with Beaumont Kelly. This is a great accomplishment for our band program and bodes
well for the future of the music program at St. John XXIII.
ST. JOHN XXIII COLLEGE PREPARATORY STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO BE STREET SMART
St. John XXIII College Preparatory hosted members
of Stay Alive From Education (S.A.F.E) at their
campus recently to present Street Smart. S.A.F.E is
a non-profit organization sponsored by Silver Eagle
distributors and Anheuser-Busch that is dedicated
to making young adults aware of the dangers of
driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,
texting while driving, not wearing seat belts and the
trauma associated with these dangers. Taught by
certified paramedics, Street Smart helps audiences
better understand the consequences of their
actions and in turn, aims to reduce the number of
accidents and fatalities each year.
The Street Smart program took the students into
the real-life drama experienced by firefighter/
paramedics as they work to save the lives of
individuals who have made poor choices when
it comes to drinking or using drugs, texting and
driving or the non-compliance of seat belts.
Featuring photos and descriptions of real-life
trauma incidents during the presentation, the
paramedics led a discussion on the importance of
students making responsible decisions concerning
28 Westfield Terra | July 2017
their safety. Rather than a lecture, Street Smart offered a real-life view of their options. Throughout the presentation, the paramedics
asked the students questions that caused them to think honestly about choices to be made and emphasized the lasting trauma that can
occur from not wearing seat belts or from distracted/impaired driving.
BEAT THE HEAT
There’s a lot to do when the weather is right: family picnics, working
on your tan at the beach, a homerun derby on the softball field, endless
hours on the golf course or lounging in your backyard hammock.
Unfortunately, too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. Excessive
heat exposure can cause dehydration, which in turn can cause dangerous
conditions like heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
(also called sunstroke).
No matter what your plans are this summer, you won’t want to miss
any of them. Combating the toll of the heat and sun on your body will
keep you healthy and active all summer long. Try a few of these simple
precautions, and you’ll still be going strong as the leaves start to turn.
WHAT TO WEAR
The way you dress can go a long way towards keeping you comfortable
when you’re outside in the heat. Make sure you bring:
Light-Colored Clothes
The white linen shirt every male movie star wears on the beach isn’t
just fashionably conscious; it’s also intelligent for hot, sunny days.
Dark clothing absorbs more heat and tight clothes don’t let sweat -
your body’s natural cooling system - evaporate.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses are chic and functional. They prevent harmful ultraviolet
(UV) rays from scorching your corneas and protect your eyes for
many more summers to come. Choose sunglasses that block 90 to
100 percent of UV rays.
Hats
Unlike 8-inch high heels at the beach, a hat is smart summer fashion.
Throwing on a wide-brimmed hat prevents UV rays from hitting the
sensitive spots on your face and keeps your skin looking young and
wrinkle-free.
Sunscreen
Nothing knocks good days off a summer calendar like a nasty sunburn.
When outdoors, use sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least
15. Use a higher-rated, waterproof sunscreen if you’ll be poolside or
out on the beach. Don’t forget to cover areas that burn easily: nose,
ears, shoulders and back of the neck.
Lip Balm
Just like sunscreen protects the rest of your skin, a lip balm with
SPF protection blocks out the sun and keeps in moisture for your
lips. Perfect for a day on the lake or while you’re working on that
summer romance.
HOW TO STAY HYDRATED
The heat makes you sweat, which cools you down, but that also
means you’re constantly losing fluid. Here’s how to stay hydrated:
Water
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Drink water throughout the day to
prevent dehydration or over exhaustion. Use the color of your urine
to guide if you’re hydrated enough - the clearer the better.
Juice
All natural juice without added sugar not only provides hydration but
also important nutrients to keep you active in hot weather. Check
the label on the juice bottle and make sure it says “100 percent juice
with no sugar added.”
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
While an ice cold cocktail -
complete with a little paper
umbrella - might sound good
on the beach, it won’t be
as refreshing to your body.
That’s because alcohol only
dehydrates you more. If you
can’t barbecue without a
brew, drink a bottle of water
between each alcoholic beverage
to stay hydrated.
Like alcohol, caffeine sucks
the moisture out of you. On
hot days, avoid it as much
as possible, especially when
combined with alcohol.
WHAT TO EAT
The food you eat can also
help you stay cool. Try adjusting
your diet so that it
includes:
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are
easy to digest and often high in water content. Salads and other dishes
rich in seasonal produce will keep you feeling light and hydrated.
Spicy Foods
Popular in warm climates, the tingling feeling and accompanying
sweat caused by spicy foods has a purpose; the sweat actually cools
your body down.
Low-Fat Meats
Fat takes longer for your body to digest and carries a higher salt
content, which can add extra strain on your body when you need it
maximized for efficiency.
WHEN TO STAY OUT OF THE SUN
Avoid peak hours of sunlight when the temperatures and UV rays are
at their highest, normally between 10 AM and 2 PM. That’s the best
time to head inside, get food and water, let your body cool down and
maybe even take a nap.
When heat and humidity are at their highest, it’s never a bad time
to take a break. Water sports are especially tricky because you can
easily become overheated without realizing it. When in doubt, take
a breather.
WHERE TO HIDE
If you live in an area where summer heat can become dangerous, pay
close attention to any heat-related warnings. When it’s dangerous,
stay inside with the A/C or fan going. If it’s not cool enough at home,
find a cooling station, usually set up at public libraries and other
buildings.
If you must be outside, keep your activities close to a shady spot. It
can provide enough of a cool down to keep you safe. Even a small
drop in temperature can make a big difference.
When it’s hot and you’re active, stay close to restaurants, convenience
stores or any other place that can offer cold temperatures and beverages
should you need them in an emergency. If you’re at the beach
or pool, the cool water offers great relief from the heat.
EVERY MOMENT COUNTS WHEN TREATING A STROKE
According to the American Stroke Association (ASA),
stroke is the 5 th leading cause of death and a leading
cause of adult disability in the United States. On average,
someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40
seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes
and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent
stroke each year.
The ASA uses the acronym FAST to help people
remember the signs of stroke.
• Face Drooping
• Arm Weakness
• Speech Difficulty • Time to Call 911
If you’re the one having the stroke, you may not see the symptoms. That’s why it’s important
that everyone know the signs so that they can recognize the symptoms in others
and call for help.
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop
when your pet poops during your walks.
Throughout the community trails, you will
find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas,
there are also bags. Carry your own grocery
bags - you’ll be recycling at the same time!
Many of your neighbors work hard with
their lawncare and landscaping. Come
with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag
or anything else. Picking up after your pets
shows your respect for every homeowner
and our beautiful community. Pet feces
damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid of
animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid
the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All
dogs and cats must be kept under restraint
while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat
is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any
unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog
or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog
or cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not
more than six (6) feet in length, if the line
or leash is held by a human being, who is
capable of controlling or governing the dog
or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian
and the animal does not have access to sidewalk
or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal
out in the yard while you work or play, it is
against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by
being responsible pet owners. This will not
only protect anyone who may be walking or bi
cycling in the area, but also the pet owner who
could be held legally responsible or possibly
sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
To make a complaint or report an animal that
is not properly restrained please contact:
5 STEPS TO A
HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather
(heat, cold, rain, etc.).
2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on
a leash when walked.
3. Make sure they’re up to date with
vaccinations.
4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification,
so they can be returned to you if lost.
5. Spay or neuter your pet.
Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are
waiting to go to their forever home. Please
check out their website at txlabrescue.org.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
SCHOOL’S OUT - CAN WE HAVE A PET?
Summer is here, children are out of school
and may need a project. What better time to
get involved with a rescue group and help a
dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an
animal is all about. Fostering is an important
step in the transition from shelter/street to
“happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement
is a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats and
is always in need of foster families.
There is a lot more to fostering than providing
food, water and a safe place to sleep. To
attract potential adopters, the animal must
be people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to
know them as individuals so you can share
personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes.
Treat the animal like your own and train him/
her, if possible.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in
what capacity you can help. Can your home
only accommodate small animals or can you
foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and
kittens or only mature animals? Can you take
more than one animal at once?
Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at
www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit
us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529
each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.•
