Pets Reminders
Westheimer Lakes Community has had many
loose dogs & cats lately. Please do your part
to keep your animals safe and contained on
your property.
Please Control Your Pets!
It is a deed restriction violation if your pets
are not confined to a fenced backyard or
within your home. They must not be allowed
to bark all night or cause a nuisance to your
neighbors. They must also be on a leash at all
times when not in a contained environment.
It is also the pet owner’s responsibility to
keep ALL areas of the community FREE from
pet debris when walking your pets. Please
remember that cats must also be confined.
If you happen to come across vicious dogs or
ANY loose dogs of this nature, please contact
Fort Bend County Animal Control at 281-342-
1512. If you are familiar with the property
address the pets belong to, please feel free
to submit that information to FSR - Maren
Grimes at maren.grimes@fsresidential.com
- to pursue the deed restriction violation.
Notification and ample time must be given
to the owner to correct the violation prior to
any further pursuit by the Association.
Remember that all pets should always wear
a collar with ID tag! Pet owners should also
consider pet microchips for identification in
case your pet loses their collar/ID tag.
the email list! Community emails are sent
regularly to residents with community news
and other important information. Email
addresses remain confidential. If you would
like to receive regular updates, please
www.canyongate.com/residents/wl.
REPORT IT!!!
If you witness any suspicious behavior
around the community please contact the local
authorities immediately at the non-emergency
number 281-341-4665.
LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS
LITTER FREE!
Take responsibility for yourself and be a good
neighbor! Keep our streets and neighborhood
trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be
a good neighbor and do your part!
If each person did their own part (around the
outside of their home including their little
stretch of street in front of their house), what
a better place this would be to live!
A clean environment/neighborhood makes
people feel good about themselves. They
will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded.
Others need to be continually reminded. It
takes time to change habits. Keeping your
neighborhood clean is a habit that takes
conscious effort.
GOLF BALLS
Hitting golf balls is meant for the golf course
only. It can cause damage not only to personal
property but to people as well. Please
respect your neighbors and refrain from hitting
golf balls inside the community.
NO TRESPASSING ON RESIDENTS
PRIVATE PROPERTY
There have been complaints about children
crossing through residents’ private yards to
get to the facilities. Please let children know
that they cannot cross private property. If this
should occur more than once, we ask homeowners’
to contact the proper authorities.
BASKETBALL GOALS
Basketball is a fun sport that many like to
play. As a reminder, please make sure that
all basketball goals are kept in an upright
position in your driveway. Basketball goals
should not be left in the street at anytime or
left on the side of your home when not in use.
Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be
a nuisance to drivers in the community and
a hazard should there be a need for an emergency
vehicle to gain access to your street.
Please note this is also a violation of deed
restrictions and if you receive violation letters
regarding this matter you could be sent to
the attorney and be liable for those charges.
be sure that the sign is placed by your front
door and place only (1) sign at your home.
If you feel in danger and think the solicitor
will be in the community long enough to call
the authorities, we suggest you call the local
Police Department.
CANYON GATE EZ TAG LANE ACCESS
Please be patient when approaching the EZ
Tag barrier arm and obey the signs. After
stopping at the stop sign, proceed slowly and
wait until the barrier arm opens fully. Bumping
or hitting the barrier arm causes costly
and unnecesary repairs to the Association.
at the stop sign until the car has gone through
the arm and the arm is closed. The barrier
arm closes after each vehicle every time.
BEAT THE HEAT
There’s a lot to do when the weather is right: family picnics, working on your tan
at the beach, a homerun derby on the softball field, endless hours on the golf
course or lounging in your backyard hammock. Unfortunately, too much fun in the
sun can be dangerous. Excessive heat exposure can cause dehydration, which in
turn can cause dangerous conditions like heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat
stroke (also called sunstroke). No matter what your plans are this summer, you
won’t want to miss any of them. Combating the toll of the heat and sun on your
body will keep you healthy and active all summer long. Try a few of these simple
precautions, and you’ll still be going strong as the leaves start to turn.
WHAT TO WEAR: The way you dress can go a long way towards keeping you
comfortable when you’re outside in the heat. Make sure you bring:
Light-Colored Clothes: The white linen shirt every male movie star wears on the
beach isn’t just fashionably conscious; it’s also intelligent for hot, sunny days.
Dark clothing absorbs more heat and tight clothes don’t let sweat - your body’s
natural cooling system - evaporate.
Sunglasses: Sunglasses are chic and functional. They prevent harmful ultraviolet
(UV) rays from scorching your corneas and protect your eyes for many more
summers to come. Choose sunglasses that block 90 to 100 percent of UV rays.
Hats: Unlike 8-inch high heels at the beach, a hat is smart summer fashion.
Throwing on a wide-brimmed hat prevents UV rays from hitting the sensitive spots
on your face and keeps your skin looking young and wrinkle-free.
Sunscreen: Nothing knocks good days off a summer calendar like a nasty sunburn.
When outdoors, use sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15. Use a higher-rated,
waterproof sunscreen if you’ll be poolside or out on the beach. Don’t forget to
cover areas that burn easily: nose, ears, shoulders and back of the neck.
Lip Balm: Just like sunscreen protects the rest of your skin, a lip balm with SPF
protection blocks out the sun and keeps in moisture for your lips. Perfect for a day
on the lake.
HOW TO STAY HYDRATED: The heat makes you sweat, which cools you down, but
that also means you’re constantly losing fluid. Here’s how to stay hydrated:
Water: Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Drink water throughout the day to prevent
dehydration or over exhaustion. Use the color of your urine to guide if you’re
hydrated enough - the clearer the better.
Juice: All natural juice without added sugar not only provides hydration but also
important nutrients to keep you active in hot weather. Check the label on the juice
bottle and make sure it says “100 percent juice with no sugar added.”
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: While an ice cold cocktail - complete with a little
paper umbrella - might sound good on the beach, it won’t be as refreshing to your
body. That’s because alcohol only dehydrates you more. If you can’t barbecue
without a brew, drink a bottle of water between each alcoholic beverage to stay
hydrated.
Like alcohol, caffeine sucks the moisture out of you. On hot days, avoid it as much
as possible, especially when combined with alcohol.
WHAT TO EAT: The food you eat can also help you stay cool. Try adjusting your
diet so that it includes: Fruits and Vegetables - Fruits and vegetables are easy to
digest and often high in water content. Salads and other dishes rich in seasonal
produce will keep you feeling light and hydrated. Spicy Foods m- Popular in warm
climates, the tingling feeling and accompanying sweat caused by spicy foods has
a purpose; the sweat actually cools your body down. Low-Fat Meats - Fat takes
longer for your body to digest and carries a higher salt content, which can add
extra strain on your body when you need it maximized for efficiency.
GREEN CORNER
Tip of the Month - “Get to know your HVAC system”
Summer is here, which means energy costs tend to rise (as temperatures
climb!). Here are some energy saving tips from https://energy.gov.
• LOWER your thermostat temperature in the winter
and RAISE it in the summer:
During the winter, you can save energy by setting your thermostat to
68 degrees when you’re at home and awake and using lower settings
when you’re away or asleep. This will help your furnace not to run
continuously.
No Job Too Big
or Too Small
Daniel Burgess
832-378-2337
In the summer, on the other hand, set your thermostat to 78 degrees if
you can and use ceiling or portable fans. Fans move the air and make
the room feel four to six degrees cooler and use much less energy than
the air conditioner. Remember, setting your thermostat to a lower
temperature than normal will not cool your home faster!
• Choose the RIGHT thermostat:
Choosing the right energy star qualified programmable thermostat can
deliver savings without sacrificing comfort. A programmable thermostat
helps your house to never get too cold or too hot. When properly
programmed, these thermostats can save up to 15% in cooling costs.
If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, don’t worry! You can
manually adjust the temperature on your air conditioner to the recommended
temperatures.
• CLEAN or REPLACE your HVAC system’s air filter:
Air filters remove dust and allergens from the air before returning it to
your rooms through your A/C unit, so it is a critical component of the
system. Unfortunately, they can often become clogged with dust and
debris and eventually block the free flow of air, reducing the system’s
efficiency. Remember that dirty filters are the number one reason most
HVAC systems begin to operate inefficiently.
A dirty air filter uses more energy than a new clean one, which means
a higher electricity bill for you. By keeping your air filter clean and in
good condition, it is estimated that you can save up to 15% on utility
costs. It is recommended that you check your filter’s condition and
change it once a month, especially if you run your unit six months a
year to year-round, if you have pets or if you have a large family. More
activity means more household dust, dirt and debris.
• INSPECT your HVAC system:
Make sure you service your unit at least once a year and head off costly
problems. This sort of evaluation is best left to the professional, unless
the homeowner has had the appropriate training. A furnace/HVAC unit
contains moving parts so it is important that belts are not cracked,
ventilation ductwork is not cracked or rusted and components, such
as coils and fans are adequately lubricated.
With a clean, inspected A/C system you will preserve energy, lowering
your utility bills and cooling your home efficiently.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have
bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos,
petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let
seedlings dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black
spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom
production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis,
lantana, oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about
2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of
sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your
yard to measure during waterings.
ST. JOHN XXIII NEWS
ST. JOHN XXIII COLLEGE PREPARATORY BAND EARNS SWEEPSTAKES AWARD AT TAPPS
The St. John XXIII College Preparatory band earned a Sweepstakes Award at the TAPPS State Concert and Sight Reading Contest held in
Temple, Texas on April 21 st . The band, under the direction of Mrs. Wendy Elko, received a Superior rating on stage and a Superior Rating in
sight reading, which qualified them for the award. Tying with Beaumont Monsignor Kelly High School, the band also placed second in the
6A category, making the results even sweeter with this all-time top honor for the band at the state contest.
Each school performs from a prescribed music list in front of a panel of judges, who rate their performance between I (Superior) and V
(Poor). In TAPPS 6A on stage, bands are awarded points based on the difficulty of the music along with the judges’ rating and only receive
points for Superior ratings. Following the stage portion, the bands must play a piece they have never seen before in front of a second panel
of judges, with only a 10-minute verbal instruction period by the band director. Again, only a Superior rating is awarded points.
St. John’s band earned 110 points for their stage portion, 50 points for their sight reading portion and 25 points as Sweepstakes winners
for a total of 185 points, tying them for second place with Beaumont Kelly. This is a great accomplishment for our band program and bodes
well for the future of the music program at St. John XXIII.
ST. JOHN XXIII COLLEGE PREPARATORY STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO BE STREET SMART
St. John XXIII College Preparatory hosted members
of Stay Alive From Education (S.A.F.E) at their
campus recently to present Street Smart. S.A.F.E is
a non-profit organization sponsored by Silver Eagle
distributors and Anheuser-Busch that is dedicated
to making young adults aware of the dangers of
driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,
texting while driving, not wearing seat belts and the
trauma associated with these dangers. Taught by
certified paramedics, Street Smart helps audiences
better understand the consequences of their
actions and in turn, aims to reduce the number of
accidents and fatalities each year.
The Street Smart program took the students into
the real-life drama experienced by firefighter/
paramedics as they work to save the lives of
individuals who have made poor choices when
it comes to drinking or using drugs, texting and
driving or the non-compliance of seat belts.
Featuring photos and descriptions of real-life
trauma incidents during the presentation, the
paramedics led a discussion on the importance of
students making responsible decisions concerning
16 Westheimer Lakes | July 2017
their safety. Rather than a lecture, Street Smart offered a real-life view
of their options. Throughout the presentation, the paramedics asked
the students questions that caused them to think honestly about
choices to be made and emphasized the lasting trauma that can occur
from not wearing seat belts or from distracted/impaired driving.
SUMMER READING CLUBS “Build a Better World” - May 29-August 31, 2017
Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the summer to encourage reading among people of all ages. Library programs
regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the
FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image. When the online registration form has been completed,
readers will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. Prizes must be collected from the “primary
library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is August 31 st . The Summer Reading Clubs
are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the Collaborative Summer
programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Children are encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can
and they will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will
receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books
read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture of a builder’s block to be displayed in that branch
library. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores that will be awarded to several lucky readers
of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location.
Area youth in grades 6 th -8 th can participate in the SRC by logging online the time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many
books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of
reading, each reader will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1200 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The
names of participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card that will be awarded to
one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place in August.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS
weekly “challenges” that can be completed individually at home online. Completing the weekly challenges will gain readers additional
entries for the monthly drawings for an FBCL stainless steel insulated bottle. The monthly drawings will take place at the ends of June and
EVERY MOMENT COUNTS WHEN TREATING A STROKE
According to the American Stroke Association (ASA),
stroke is the 5 th leading cause of death and a leading
cause of adult disability in the United States. On average,
someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40
seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes
and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent
stroke each year.
The ASA uses the acronym FAST to help people
remember the signs of stroke.
• Face Drooping
• Arm Weakness
• Speech Difficulty • Time to Call 911
If you’re the one having the stroke, you may not see the symptoms. That’s why it’s important
that everyone know the signs so that they can recognize the symptoms in others
and call for help.
PET INFORMATION
SCHOOL’S OUT - CAN WE HAVE A PET?
Summer is here, children are out of school
and may need a project. What better time to
get involved with a rescue group and help a
dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an
animal is all about. Fostering is an important
step in the transition from shelter/street to
“happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement
is a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats and
is always in need of foster families.
There is a lot more to fostering than providing
food, water and a safe place to sleep. To
attract potential adopters, the animal must
be people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to
know them as individuals so you can share
personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes.
Treat the animal like your own and train him/
her, if possible.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in
what capacity you can help. Can your home
only accommodate small animals or can you
foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and
kittens or only mature animals? Can you take
more than one animal at once?
Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at
www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit
us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529
each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.•
When you or someone you know considers
adopting a dog, please check out one of our
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
FT. BEND COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid
of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying
to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites
occur on the property where the dog lives,
unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained
animals are at increased risk of being bitten
by rabies-infected wildlife.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is
not properly restrained please contact
Ft. Bend County Animal Control -281-342-1512
“LEASH LAW” INFORMATION
Animal control authorities are permitted to
enter your Property to patrol and remove
pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and
inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the
control of your dog. If your dog is one that
‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make
every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right
to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative
that you keep your dog on a leash
at all times. While your dog is friendly to you
and your family, imagine the consequences
if it were to harm someone while it was
‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk
the common area ground without fear of
attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals
are confined to their property or kept on
a leash to free a community of unrestrained
and free-roaming animals. Although most
dog bites occur on the property where the
dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs
do pose a substantial threat to the public. In
addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected
wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws
is essential in enhancing the animal control
program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies
in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals
is identification,
should that animal become lost.
Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of
a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administra
tion costs of the animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for
licensing dogs and cats because they are an
important control measure for the public
health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting
pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier
between infected wild animals and humans.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
INGREDIENTS:
2 to 3 pounds chicken, cut into pieces 3 cups all-purpose flour
5 tbsp. seasoned salt 3 tbsp. garlic powder
Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry
coated chicken pieces in hot oil for about 5 minutes on each side. Cover skillet
and cook on lower heat for about 10 minutes. Remove cover, turn up heat and
fry for 5 minutes on each side to make chicken crispy. Chicken is done when
