hplandmark.com sports the highland park landmark | July 6, 2017 | 29 All ages featured in 20th Maccabiah Games Derek Wolff Sports Editor The last time that softball player Gregg Shamberg represented the United States in an international competition, his side won the gold medal in the 1999 Maccabi Pan American Games, held in Mexico City. Jenny Goldsher was less than three months old. The two Highland Park residents, along with four others, will both represent the U.S. at the 2017 Maccabiah Games, the 20th rendition of the competition, held one year after the Summer Olympics. The games are a celebration of Jewish athletes, featuring more than 10,000 athletes from more than 80 nations. They began this Tuesday and will run until July 18 in Israel. Goldsher, a 2017 Highland Park High School graduate, will play women’s softball for the Open division team, largely comprised of current college players or players a year or two removed from the college game. Bound to play at Rollins College next season, Goldsher is the youngest athlete on the team and the only one whose last season was at the high school level. Shamberg, a father of three, will play men’s softball for the Masters division team, which requires its members to be at least 35 years old or older. Goldsher played in the junior Maccabi games while growing up and heard about a tryout in Chicago last year for the 20th Maccabiah Games when <strong>HP</strong>HS head softball coach Lydia Gonzalez emailed her. The tryout saw her compete with some of the top softball players at the collegiate level around the country. Her expectations lowered, she was just grateful to grace the same field. “It was so cool for me just going to this tryout and seeing all these highlevel athletes,” Goldsher said. “Hands down it was the best group of athletes I’ve ever been on the field with.” Goldsher was at a marching band camp when she received a much-anticipated email with her fate sealed inside. Her spot on the team secure, she’s excited about playing against top notch competition, which she believes will help better prepare her for the college game. The U.S. women will take on Canada and Israel during the competition, with the first day of the Games falling on an important American holiday, all the more increasing the significance of the occasion. “Going to be in a different country during the Fourth of July and getting to represent the U.S. is unbelievable,” Goldsher said. “You watch the Olympics as a kid and you think it’s the coolest thing in the world and it’s the ultimate competition as an athlete and this is the third largest international sporting competition. To have the opportunity to be a part of it is unbelievable and it’s something I didn’t even dream about.” Shamberg still has fond memories of helping the U.S. capture the Maccabi Games in 1999 but life caught up with him afterward and forced him away from international competition. 18 years later, he’ll head to Israel for the first time, competing in his first Maccabiah Games. Like Goldsher, he attended a tryout in Chicago in 2016. The Masters division men’s softball team held tryouts in California and New York as well, with the chosen few assembling for a training camp in Las Vegas in April of 2017. With both Highland Park and Chicago lacking established fastpitch softball leagues, Shamberg, 45, has stayed in softball shape by playing baseball and 16-inch softball on the weekends. He practices twice a week with the other Chicagoland area Team U.S.A. players. Despite a lack of general practice time, Shamberg is confident the stars and stripes can bring home a gold medal, thanks in part to the amount of athletes on the team from California and Arizona, all of whom benefit from playing fastpitch softball yearround. “I would expect to win the gold medal this year,” Shamberg said. “We have a lot of returning players and arguably the best pitcher in the Masters, and typically in softball that does help a lot.
