AMAN
OF
VISION
Father Victor Braun
Founder.
A man with a great heart, ever ready
to be touched and moved to action
by the sufferings of orphans, the
destitute, the sick, the lonely, the
unwanted.
A man with a tremendous capacity
for human love which impelled him
to offer his love and friendship; a
love which evoked love and devotion
from his Sisters, and amongst
them.
A man with a great capacity for
enjoying a celebration in which his
Sisters, and all the old people, and
the children they cared for, might
share. His journeys to the work-
26
house-convent in Argenteuil, to the
convent in Homerton, in Vienna
were always the occasion, on his
return, for such a welcoming fete ,
with a special meal, a glass of wine
for the elderly, games and songs for
the children. Still in existence, is the
huge banner listing the events for the
celebration on his last return from
Vienna to Argenteuil, a few months
before his death.
A man with an ever-increasing love
for God and for people ; utterly
human, yet utterly in love with
Jesus. Ever since that time in his
early years as a priest, at a Sacred
Heart convention, when he had been
seized, captivated, enraptured by the
Love of God poured out from the
Heart of Jesus, Father Braun had
longed to give love for Love.
It has been said of him : « Faithful to
the grace of his vocation, he had
grown in an intimate friendship with
Christ, living with Him and in
Him. » He longed to reveal to all the
world this Love of God which moved
him so deeply. To help to reveal this
Love is the purpose and end of his
religious Congregation ; and of this
little Band he said : « The Sacred
Heart is the Founder; I am only its
servant. »
A WOMAN
OF
INTEGRETY
Mother Winefride Tyrell
First Superior General
Sisters of the Sacred Hearts
of Jesus and Mary,
Chigwell.
Bridget Tyrell was born in Monasterevan,
Co. Kildare, Ireland, and received
the habit of the Servants of the
Sacred Heart in the convent chapel,
Homerton, East London, on December
8, 1878. She was the only sister
professed in the same chapel on
January 8, 1881. However, together
with thirty-five other sisters, Sister
Winefride was finally professed on
August 22, 1895.
She taught in a poor quarter of the
east end of London and was head
teacher in Guardian A ngels School,
Mile End. In 1899, Mother Winefride
was named Provincial of the
English Province of the Servants of
the Sacred Heart, and went to live at
the provincial house at Homerton.
Four years later, on the advice of the
Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal
Vaughan, the majority of the Sisters
of the English Province formed a
separate congregation. Thus was born
the Congregation of the Sisters of the
Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Mother Winefride was named the
first Superior General by the Westminster
ecclesiastical superior, Canon
Surmont. By a strange coincidence,
the Canon had come to know Father
Braun, during the period when he
was a curate in Stratford and the
founder was visiting the sisters there.
Mother Winefride was a woman of
integrity, far-seeing and full of confidence
in the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
and in the divine providence of God.
Under her guidance, the congregation
spread as far north as Carlisle and to
North Hyde, Middlesex. She was
untiring in her efforts to visit the
sisters regularly, encouraging and
supporting new works of mercy. But
her health was deteriorating and
fo llowing the general chapter of
1908, she retired to Hillingdon in
Middlesex, where she lived peacefully
until her death on November
20, 1916.
ROOTED
IN CHRIST •••
Our mission in the church is ...
to give glory to God by loving
the divine Heart of Jesus and
making Him loved till our last
breath ...
and to part1c1pate in the
redemption of the world by
working for the salvation of all
those whom providence
entrusts to our care.
Constitutions.
" Our Father ...
Thy kingdom come on earth "
"You must enter into the interior of the
Divine Heart so as to be animated with
its sentiments, to think its thoughts.
That is the contemplative side of your
life. Then, when the heart has thus
been enkindled by meditation on the
life of our Lord, the apostolic life begins.
One can no longer contain the
flames drawn from the Heart ofJesus,
but feels the need of communicating
them."
(Fr. Victor Braun)
Every woman religious must bear
witness to the primacy of God,
and must dedicate a sufficiently
long period of time every day to
stand before the Lord, to tell him
her love, and above all to let
herself be loved by him.
Jesus
Auxiliaries are linked in a special way with
the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus
and Mary in their Mission and in their
Charism. Membership is open to anyone
with a desire to love Jesus more and more.
What is promised by the Congregation
I. Daily Prayer for the Auxiliaries
and for their special
intentions.
2. A Mass for the Auxiliaries
and their families on the
First Friday of each month.
3. A quarterly publication,
" THE PULSE '', with items
of interest, and news of the
Congregation and of the
A uxi Iiaries.
4. Meetings and conferences,
depending on the numbers
in any given locality.
The Congregation of the Sisters
of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus
and Mary have Convents in
England, Scotland, Wales,
Ireland, U.S.A. (California) and
Africa (Zambia). Their
Apostolate or Mission includes
teaching, nursing, care of the
elderly, care of the mentally
handicapped, care of
one-parent families and various
forms of involvement in
Diocesan and Parish work.
What is asked of the Auxiliary
I. Daily Prayer:
Any prayer of choice, or an
'Our Father,' 'Hail Mary'
and 'Glory be' and the two
invocations specific to the
sisters' devotion,
'May the Sacred Heart of
Jesus be everywhere loved'
and 'Immaculate Heart of
Mary, pray for us.'
or to pray part of the daily
Office.
2. To accept daily at least one
inconvenience, suffering or
frustration without
complaining, and, if
possible, with a smile, or to
help someone in need.
Many auxiliaries will wish to
add to these, e.g. attendance at
Mass, other than that of
Sunday obligation, every
month, or even every week;
the Way of the Cross, etc.
The special intention of these
prayers and penance is for
God's blessing on the Sisters
and Auxiliaries as they try to
make the Sacred Heart of Jesus
better known and loved, and
for an increase in vocations to
the Congregation, and in the
number of Auxiliaries.
APOSTLESHIP
OF PRAYER
BUILDING A NEW WORLD
The Apostleship of prayer is a
spiritual association of Catholics
who commit themselves to
pray daily in union with the
Pope, for the needs of the
world.
Lord, help us to realize that
your power is at work in us
and that it is powerful enough,
and more than powerful
enough to carry out your purpose
m us and in the world
beyond all our hopes and
dreams.
Ephesians 4 : 20
Praying with the Pope for the
needs of the church and the
world.
THE SIGN IS LOVE
Jesus, you have taught us to
show our love for God by
loving our neighbour ; help us
to overcome our selfishness
and to be ready to do good to
those around us. May the
goodness, kindness and love of
your Heart flow into ours so
that we may radiate your love
and be recognized as your
disciples.
