IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
Please slow down for the safety of our residents.
You never know when something or someone
will dart out between parked cars (ball, kid, an
animal). Is getting home two minutes sooner
really worth that risk?
HAVE IDEAS FOR FUTURE EVENTS?
The Events Committee hopes you joined your neighbors at Food
Truck Friday in May.
Do you have an idea for a Grayson Lakes gathering? Please send your
ideas to events@graysonlakesliving.com.
TENNIS COURTS ARE NOW LOCKED
Please LOCK the courts when you leave! The Grayson Lakes tennis
courts are now locked, but accessible to all residents over 18 yrs.
and in good standing.
Unfortunately, there have been repeated incidents reported of
inappropriate use of the courts and damage has been done to the
facilities. These types of additional costs can impact annual dues,
so we encourage all resident tennis players to assist with this simple
security procedure.
The association has had repairs and new equipment installed this
past spring, please help keep it clean and in good condition for all!
This amenity is for the enjoyment of residents and their accompanied
guests. After using the courts, it’s important you lock up!
You may call Crest Management at 281-945-4632 to receive the
access code.
ARE YOUR TREES AND LANDSCAPING TRIMMED?
Many neighbors enjoy walking throughout Grayson Lakes because
of the lakes, expansive green space and beautiful homes.
Please take time to check your landscaping near all of your sidewalks.
Are the trees trimmed upwards of 8’? Are the trees trimmed for school
buses to pass with clearance? Are front beds clear of overhanging
shrubbery (Sago Palms, in particular), fire ant piles or fallen rock
borders? Also, if your sidewalks have sunken or shifted unevenly, this
is a safety hazard that is the owner’s responsibility. Just a friendly
reminder to please ensure that the front and side of your home’s
sidewalks are enjoyable for all walkers!
IT’S HOT OUT THERE!
Yes, spring has definitely arrived and this is a perfect time to look
over the exterior of your home for mold and mildew.
Mold and mildew occur frequently with heavy rains and high humidity,
but can usually be removed with a good power washing.
Please help keep your home in good repair and the neighborhood
looking great.
MONTHLY BOARD MEETINGS
The monthly HOA Board meeting is held the third Wednesday of
each month. ARC meetings are held the second Thursday each
month. Both meetings start at 6:30 PM and are held at the Grayson
Lakes Clubhouse.
DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS
Please do not feed the ducks that live on and around our lakes. It
causes problems for the ducks as well as for the residents that live
near the feeding areas!
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
Please be a good neighbor - keep the sidewalks clear of vehicles,
check for low hanging tree branches and overgrown shrubs near the
sidewalks, clean up after your pets, put yard waste at the curb only
the night before and remove garbage cans from visible sight except
for trash days. The trash service includes pickup from your garage,
so only yard waste needs to be placed at the curb.
I FOUND A BABY SQUIRREL, NOW WHAT?
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
If you find a baby squirrel, check for the following:
• Is it bleeding, have an open wound or a broken bone?
• Is it covered in fly eggs (they look like grains of rice)?
• Is it cold, wet or crying?
If the answer is YES to any of the above, the squirrel is likely injured.
Bring it to us as soon as possible. If NO, the next step is to determine
its approximate age to see if you need to intervene.
Does the squirrel have a fluffed-out tail (like a bottle brush)?
Is the body longer than 6” (not including the tail)?
If the answer is YES to these questions, this is likely a juvenile squirrel.
You do not need to intervene. Even at the young age of 10 to 12 weeks,
the squirrel is already independent and on its own. If NO, this is an
infant squirrel. You will need to help reunite the baby with its mother.
Baby squirrels at this age must be kept warm. Heat a towel in the microwave
or place uncooked rice or bird seed in a sock and warm in the
microwave for 20-30 seconds. Wrap the sock in a soft towel and place it
with the baby in an open container like a small box or plastic container.
Place the box IN A SAFE PLACE OFF THE GROUND near where you found
the baby or under the tree with the nest if you know which tree it is. You
can also attach the container directly to the tree but MAKE SURE IT IS
SECURE. Keep children, dogs and cats out of the area.
Observe the baby squirrel for the next six to eight hours of daylight.
Reheat the towel or rice/birdseed bag every two hours. Has the mother
returned to retrieve her baby?
If YES ... congratulations! If NO, bring the box with the baby inside.
Continue to keep it warm until you can bring it to us.
REMEMBER: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FEED THE SQUIRREL
OR GIVE IT WATER!
TWRC Wildlife Center is your resource for wildlife-related questions. They
also serve as an emergency wildlife care facility should you find animals
in need of help. If you have any questions, please call 713-468-TWRC. You
ST. JOHN XXIII NEWS
ST. JOHN XXIII COLLEGE PREPARATORY BAND EARNS SWEEPSTAKES AWARD AT TAPPS
The St. John XXIII College Preparatory band earned a Sweepstakes Award at the TAPPS State Concert and Sight Reading Contest held in
Temple, Texas on April 21 st . The band, under the direction of Mrs. Wendy Elko, received a Superior rating on stage and a Superior Rating in
sight reading, which qualified them for the award. Tying with Beaumont Monsignor Kelly High School, the band also placed second in the
6A category, making the results even sweeter with this all-time top honor for the band at the state contest.
Each school performs from a prescribed music list in front of a panel of judges, who rate their performance between I (Superior) and V
(Poor). In TAPPS 6A on stage, bands are awarded points based on the difficulty of the music along with the judges’ rating and only receive
points for Superior ratings. Following the stage portion, the bands must play a piece they have never seen before in front of a second panel
of judges, with only a 10-minute verbal instruction period by the band director. Again, only a Superior rating is awarded points.
St. John’s band earned 110 points for their stage portion, 50 points for their sight reading portion and 25 points as Sweepstakes winners
for a total of 185 points, tying them for second place with Beaumont Kelly. This is a great accomplishment for our band program and bodes
well for the future of the music program at St. John XXIII.
ST. JOHN XXIII COLLEGE PREPARATORY STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO BE STREET SMART
St. John XXIII College Preparatory hosted members
of Stay Alive From Education (S.A.F.E) at their
campus recently to present Street Smart. S.A.F.E is
a non-profit organization sponsored by Silver Eagle
distributors and Anheuser-Busch that is dedicated
to making young adults aware of the dangers of
driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,
texting while driving, not wearing seat belts and the
trauma associated with these dangers. Taught by
certified paramedics, Street Smart helps audiences
better understand the consequences of their
actions and in turn, aims to reduce the number of
accidents and fatalities each year.
The Street Smart program took the students into
the real-life drama experienced by firefighter/
paramedics as they work to save the lives of
individuals who have made poor choices when
it comes to drinking or using drugs, texting and
driving or the non-compliance of seat belts.
Featuring photos and descriptions of real-life
trauma incidents during the presentation, the
paramedics led a discussion on the importance of
students making responsible decisions concerning
Grayson Lakes | July 2017
9

their safety. Rather than a lecture, Street Smart offered a reallife
view of their options. Throughout the presentation, the
paramedics asked the students questions that caused them to
think honestly about choices to be made and emphasized the
lasting trauma that can occur from not wearing seat belts or
from distracted/impaired driving.
Make your favorite recipes healthier by using way more heart healthy
ingredients. These healthy substitutions can help you cut down on
• Instead of whole milk (1 cup): 1 cup fat-free/low-fat milk, plus
1 Tb of liquid vegetable oil
1/2 cup low-fat yogurt + 1/2 cup plain low-fat unsalted cottage cheese
• Instead of sour cream: low-fat unsalted cottage cheese +
low-fat/fat-free yogurt or use fat-free sour cream
• Instead of cream cheese: 4 Tb soft margarine blended with
1 cup dry, unsalted low-fat cottage cheese
Smart-Substitutions-to-Eat-Healthy
OATMEAL: ONE FOOD, MANY BENEFITS
Oatmeal is a power food as it delivers both
a bang for your buck and numerous health
benefits. During the summer months, crispy,
cool corn flakes may sound like a better
choice vs. a hot bowl of oatmeal, but read
on. You’ll be glad to make the switch:
1. Oats contain both soluble and insoluble
fiber. Soluble fibers help lower cholesterol and stabilize blood glucose
levels. The insoluble fiber in oats provide a “moving” experience by
curtailing constipation and improving intestinal health.
2. Oats make an easy, balanced breakfast. One cup of cooked oatmeal
(1/2 cup of uncooked) contains about 150 calories, four grams of fiber
(about half soluble and half insoluble) and six grams of protein. To
boost protein further, my favorite way to eat oatmeal is with a swirl of
almond butter nestled within. This powerful combo will keep you away
from that mid-morning visit to the vending machine.
3. Oats provide important minerals. Nutrient-rich oatmeal contains
thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, selenium and iron.
4. Oats are naturally gluten-free, but check with manufacturers to ensure
that their products are not made using the same equipment as other
potentially contaminating grains.
5. Oats could help you control your weight by keeping you feeling fuller
longer. Choosing whole grains could squash hunger and simultaneously
provide that pleasant full feeling. NOTE: monitor portion sizes.
BEAT THE HEAT
There’s a lot to do when the weather is right: family picnics, working
on your tan at the beach, a homerun derby on the softball field, endless
hours on the golf course or lounging in your backyard hammock.
Unfortunately, too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. Excessive
heat exposure can cause dehydration, which in turn can cause dangerous
conditions like heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
(also called sunstroke).
No matter what your plans are this summer, you won’t want to miss
any of them. Combating the toll of the heat and sun on your body will
keep you healthy and active all summer long. Try a few of these simple
precautions, and you’ll still be going strong as the leaves start to turn.
WHAT TO WEAR
The way you dress can go a long way towards keeping you comfortable
when you’re outside in the heat. Make sure you bring:
Light-Colored Clothes
The white linen shirt every male movie star wears on the beach isn’t
just fashionably conscious; it’s also intelligent for hot, sunny days.
Dark clothing absorbs more heat and tight clothes don’t let sweat -
your body’s natural cooling system - evaporate.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses are chic and functional. They prevent harmful ultraviolet
(UV) rays from scorching your corneas and protect your eyes for
many more summers to come. Choose sunglasses that block 90 to
100 percent of UV rays.
Hats
Unlike 8-inch high heels at the beach, a hat is smart summer fashion.
Throwing on a wide-brimmed hat prevents UV rays from hitting the
sensitive spots on your face and keeps your skin looking young and
wrinkle-free.
Sunscreen
Nothing knocks good days off a summer calendar like a nasty sunburn.
When outdoors, use sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least
15. Use a higher-rated, waterproof sunscreen if you’ll be poolside or
out on the beach. Don’t forget to cover areas that burn easily: nose,
ears, shoulders and back of the neck.
Lip Balm
Just like sunscreen protects the rest of your skin, a lip balm with
SPF protection blocks out the sun and keeps in moisture for your
lips. Perfect for a day on the lake or while you’re working on that
summer romance.
HOW TO STAY HYDRATED
The heat makes you sweat, which cools you down, but that also
means you’re constantly losing fluid. Here’s how to stay hydrated:
Water
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Drink water throughout the day to
prevent dehydration or over exhaustion. Use the color of your urine
to guide if you’re hydrated enough - the clearer the better.
Juice
All natural juice without added sugar not only provides hydration but
also important nutrients to keep you active in hot weather. Check
the label on the juice bottle and make sure it says “100 percent juice
with no sugar added.”
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
While an ice cold cocktail -
complete with a little paper
umbrella - might sound good
on the beach, it won’t be
as refreshing to your body.
That’s because alcohol only
dehydrates you more. If you
can’t barbecue without a
brew, drink a bottle of water
between each alcoholic beverage
to stay hydrated.
Like alcohol, caffeine sucks
the moisture out of you. On
hot days, avoid it as much
as possible, especially when
combined with alcohol.
WHAT TO EAT
The food you eat can also help
you stay cool. Try adjusting
your diet so that it includes:
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are easy
to digest and often high in
water content. Salads and other dishes rich in seasonal produce will
keep you feeling light and hydrated.
Spicy Foods
Popular in warm climates, the tingling feeling and accompanying
sweat caused by spicy foods has a purpose; the sweat actually cools
your body down.
Low-Fat Meats
Fat takes longer for your body to digest and carries a higher salt
content, which can add extra strain on your body when you need it
maximized for efficiency.
WHEN TO STAY OUT OF THE SUN
Avoid peak hours of sunlight when the temperatures and UV rays are
at their highest, normally between 10 AM and 2 PM. That’s the best
time to head inside, get food and water, let your body cool down and
maybe even take a nap.
When heat and humidity are at their highest, it’s never a bad time
to take a break. Water sports are especially tricky because you can
easily become overheated without realizing it. When in doubt, take
a breather.
WHERE TO HIDE
If you live in an area where summer heat can become dangerous, pay
close attention to any heat-related warnings. When it’s dangerous, stay
inside with the A/C or fan going. If it’s not cool enough at home, find a
cooling station, usually set up at public libraries and other buildings.
If you must be outside, keep your activities close to a shady spot. It
can provide enough of a cool down to keep you safe. Even a small
drop in temperature can make a big difference.
When it’s hot and you’re active, stay close to restaurants, convenience
stores or any other place that can offer cold temperatures and beverages
should you need them in an emergency. If you’re at the beach
or pool, the cool water offers great relief from the heat.
Meet Emilie from Sweden….
I’m a kind and happy person who always tries to see things from the
positive side. I’m a helpful person with a good ability to work with others.
My friends have described me as a social person and I have to agree with
them. I really like to talk and meet new people. In general, I’ve always
been very motivated and responsible over my school work. When getting
an assignment, I always want to perform as good as I can. I love to
challenge myself and to try new things, that way I always develop as a
person. This is one of my many reasons going on an exchange year. To
do something totally out of my comfort zone and to try new things is
something I’m so excited for.
My hobbies include hanging out with friends and family, listening to
music, dancing, working out, watch series, reading and baking. I love
hanging out with my family and friends and do that every opportunity
that I get. I start and end everyday by listening to music. Music is something
that helps me to express how I’m feeling, while at the same time
gives me energy. I also have a big interest for dance, especially tap dance
which is the only thing that I dance right now. I love to move and jump
around even though I may not be the best dancer in the world. I also
read on a daily basis. My favorite kinds of books are teen fiction and
fantasy novels. I also watch a lot of series - all different kinds of them.
It’s something that I love to do and makes me feel relaxed. Also, I love
to bake. When I was younger I used to bake every day after school but
now I only bake for special events, like family gatherings.
Emilie and others like her are looking for a host family for the year. If you
are interested in hosting her or any other student, please give me a call
at 832-455-7881 or email me at vicki.stsfoundation@gmail.com. I can
answer any questions you might have. Remember one year of hosting
leaves a lifetime of memories!
Summer Reading!
SUMMER READING CLUBS “Build a Better World” - May 29-August 31, 2017
Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the summer to encourage reading among people of all ages. Library programs
and activities continue through July 29 th . There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs (SRC) and they are open to everyone,
regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the
FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image. When the online registration form has been completed,
readers will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. Prizes must be collected from the “primary
library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is August 31 st . The Summer Reading Clubs
are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the Collaborative Summer
Library Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program materials for
public libraries.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN
Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting
programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Children are encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can
and they will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will
receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books
read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture of a builder’s block to be displayed in that branch
library. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores that will be awarded to several lucky readers
of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE
Area youth in grades 6 th -8 th can participate in the SRC by logging online the time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many
books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of
reading, each reader will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1200 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The
names of participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card that will be awarded to
one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place in August.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in the YA & Adult SRC by reading books and participating in optional
weekly “challenges” that can be completed individually at home online. Completing the weekly challenges will gain readers additional
entries for the monthly drawings for an FBCL stainless steel insulated bottle. The monthly drawings will take place at the ends of June and
July at each branch library for readers who log in and record their reading each week. All YA and adult readers who complete the goal of
reading five books will earn a dual highlighter/pen. In addition, the names of participants who complete at least five books will be entered
into a drawing for a $25-gift card that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place at the end
of July. An ultimate grand prize will be awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants in the YA/Adult Summer Reading
EVERY MOMENT COUNTS WHEN TREATING A STROKE
According to the American Stroke Association (ASA),
stroke is the 5 th leading cause of death and a leading
cause of adult disability in the United States. On average,
someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40
seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes
and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent
stroke each year.
The ASA uses the acronym FAST to help people
remember the signs of stroke.
• Face Drooping
• Arm Weakness
• Speech Difficulty • Time to Call 911
If you’re the one having the stroke, you may not see the symptoms. That’s why it’s important
that everyone know the signs so that they can recognize the symptoms in others
and call for help.
PET INFORMATION
SCHOOL’S OUT - CAN WE HAVE A PET?
Summer is here, children are out of school
and may need a project. What better time to
get involved with a rescue group and help a
dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an
animal is all about. Fostering is an important
step in the transition from shelter/street to
“happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement
is a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats and
is always in need of foster families.
There is a lot more to fostering than providing
food, water and a safe place to sleep. To
attract potential adopters, the animal must
be people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to
know them as individuals so you can share
personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes.
Treat the animal like your own and train him/
her, if possible.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in
what capacity you can help. Can your home
only accommodate small animals or can you
foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and
kittens or only mature animals? Can you take
more than one animal at once?
Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at
www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit
us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529
each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.•
When you or someone you know considers
adopting a dog, please check out one of our
five local animal shelters:
Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city
pound. 713-229-7300
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
FT. BEND COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid
of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying
to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites
occur on the property where the dog lives,
unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained
animals are at increased risk of being bitten
by rabies-infected wildlife.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is
not properly restrained please contact
Ft. Bend County Animal Control -281-342-1512
“LEASH LAW” INFORMATION
Animal control authorities are permitted to
enter your Property to patrol and remove
pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and
inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the
control of your dog. If your dog is one that
‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make
every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right
to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative
that you keep your dog on a leash
at all times. While your dog is friendly to you
and your family, imagine the consequences
if it were to harm someone while it was
‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk
the common area ground without fear of
attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals
are confined to their property or kept on
a leash to free a community of unrestrained
and free-roaming animals. Although most
dog bites occur on the property where the
dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs
do pose a substantial threat to the public. In
addition, unrestrained animals are at
increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected
wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws
is essential in enhancing the animal control
program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies
in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals
is identification,
should that animal become lost.
Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of
a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administra
tion costs of the animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for
licensing dogs and cats because they are an
important control measure for the public
health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting
pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier
between infected wild animals and humans.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
DIRECTIONS:
In a shallow plate or bowl, mix the flour, seasoned salt, garlic powder, salt and
pepper. Roll or shake the chicken pieces in the flour mixture and place on a
platter. Then dip each chicken piece in the egg and roll again in flour mixture.
Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry
coated chicken pieces in hot oil for about 5 minutes on each side. Cover skillet
and cook on lower heat for about 10 minutes. Remove cover, turn up heat and
fry for 5 minutes on each side to make chicken crispy. Chicken is done when
