HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB NEWS JULY 2017 

“Celebrating 40 Years as a Garden Club” 

The Hearthstone Garden Club is entering its 40 th Year as a garden club in 

our beautiful Hearthstone neighborhood. We appreciate all of those who 

have been involved with our club over the last 40 years. Many have made 

a big impact on our club, some were the silent type, but all our members 

have made a difference. As our new President, I would like to thank our 

founders for making such a wonderful group possible. Our club has some 

very special members with a tremendous amount of knowledge and 

compassion for gardening and such kind and giving spirits. We have a 

wealth of gardening resources and our club is very blessed to have such 

special ladies. Get to know us! 

The Hearthstone Garden Clubs installation of the new Board for the 2017- 

2018 year was held on Tuesday evening, May 16 th . It was a lovely evening 

for the members with a special dinner and fair well to our outgoing 

President, Kris Patterson. Kris has made a big difference this past year, as 

she always does. We can never express our gratitude for all she has done 

for the garden club and making this past year such a success.

The garden club has seen a great deal of progress with the Memory Garden 

in the park this year. Kris Patterson and Irene Crutchley have worked hard 

for several years to get this area ready. It has been a major undertaking 

with plants, hardscape and irrigation installation. This area will only get 

better with time, their dedication and perfection. Thank you to all of those 

involved. The garden club is planning a dedication in the near future. 

The garden club gave 6 - $1,500 Scholarships this past May to college 

students majoring in Horticulture, Landscape, Floriculture, Agriculture, 

Forestry, Botany, Ecology/Conservation, Floral Design or Turf Grass 

Management. A total contribution of $9,000 was given to help students 

in their efforts to obtain their education. Thank you to those who helped 

make this possible through your support of our Plant Sale and the Holiday 

Auction. This is just one of the charities which benefits from our proceeds. 

We continue to be involved with the residents of the Brookwood 

Community in Brookshire, Texas. Brookwood is a community, which 

provides an educational environment creating meaningful jobs and 

purpose for adults with disabilities. Our members volunteer and help in 

the greenhouses or where they are needed. Brookwood is an amazing 

place and if you are not familiar with it, you owe it to yourself to visit. www.

One of our other charities which is near and dear to our hearts is the 

Christian Assistance Ministries (CAM) of Cypress. Our donations of food in 

the summer helps make meals available for many children which would 

not have a meal during the day due to being out of school and the lack 

of family funds. Our members donation of gift items during the holiday 

season help make it possible for children which would not have gifts to 

have a Christmas. If you are not familiar with CAM, check them out. www.

Air Conditioning Contractors of America 

Our garden club members volunteer and help at Woodwind Lakes Health & 

Rehab in Houston. The club sponsors parties, bingo, gives gifts to residents 

at Christmas, donated by members, among other activities. This would 

not be possible without the garden clubs help. Many of the residents are 

alone in the world without family or loved ones. Our presence makes a 

difference in the lives of the residents at Woodwind Lakes. 

As you can see, the Hearthstone Garden Club is all about giving, whether 

it be to beautify our neighborhood in some way or helping the elderly, 

disabled, less fortunate or students. We are a Non-Profit 501c3 organization 

and we only benefit through the pleasure obtained by giving and making a 

difference in the lives of others. This my neighborhood friends is what the 

Hearthstone Garden Club is all about. 

The Hearthstone Garden Club will not meet in July. The new year will 

begin with our August Social on August 15 th at 7 PM at the Hearthstone 

Country Club. Watch for our Ad in the August Edition of the Hearthstone 

News, on our Facebook page and Nextdoor Hearthstone. If you are 

interested in joining us, you are more than welcome. We learn a great 

deal from our many speakers. As always, if you have any questions, please

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR HARRIS COUNTY CONSTABLE 

The Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is now offering a class on 

Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). RAD is one of the best women’s self-defense 

courses available. It’s a program based on realistic self-defense tactics and 

techniques. It is a comprehensive self-defense course for women that 

begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while 

progressing on to the basics of hands-on defensive training. If you’re

HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS 

The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights 

throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like you 

see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light poles 

along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods. 

Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole 

number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing 

the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying on 

during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google 

streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you. 

Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported 

to PCMI at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest 

address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime 

inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report it, 

so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.

LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE 

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with 

their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each 

dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have 

machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help 

found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms 

and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let 

us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at

This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to 

members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to

If you’ve ever considered joining a mom’s group, look no 

further! We are located right here in Hearthstone! Our 

group is a great way to get to know other moms, help 

children make friends with future or current classmates 

and if you are new to the area, give you insight into the 

best places to eat, bring the kids, etc. We hope that you 

will join us at one of our meetings and/or join us at an 

event! Dues are only $30 per year. 

Our other activities for the year include pool parties, family 

parties, Easter Egg Hunt, Fall Festival, Mom’s Christmas 

Party and Santa visits at your home. We are looking into 

reinstating the Babysitting Swap for those interested,

BEAR CREEK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SCHOOL 

REGISTRATION 2017-2018 

Bear Creek United Methodist Church School (BCUMCS) has been a 

leading preschool in this community for more than 30 years. We offer 

a developmentally appropriate program for children in a Christian 

environment. BCUMCS is currently taking applications for a limited 

number of openings for the 2017-18 school year. BCUMCS serves children 

from 12 months through Kindergarten with options for two, three or four 

day classes. We offer a Transition or Bridge class for children who need an 

additional year to grow before entering Kindergarten. 

Our Kindergarten meets five days, offers small student/teacher ratios, 

individualized instruction and special events that reinforce basic concepts.

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL SCHOOL 

2017-2018 REGISTRATION 

St. Cuthbert Episcopal School’s 2017-2018 registration is 

underway and will continue each day during school hours 

until all of our classes are filled. We offer 2, 3 or 5 day classes, 

including a Bridge/Kindergarten class. St. Cuthbert School 

enrolls students ages 18 months through 5 years. School 

hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 AM to 2 PM and Friday, 9 

AM to 12 noon. 

Our Bridge/Kindergarten program is designed for children 

who are not quite ready for kindergarten. This class 

allows children to succeed at learning with greater ease 

and confidence, by helping them bridge academic and 

developmental gaps. The St. Cuthbert School program 

provides a loving, Christian environment offering the 

children weekly chapel, as well as music and movement, 

library and computer classes. Our curriculum includes 

Handwriting without Tears, Reading A-Z, Math and Science. 

The program is open to all children, regardless of race, 

nationality or faith. St. Cuthbert School is accredited by 

the National Association of Education for Young Children

May 21, 2017 marks a historic day for Covenant Academy, a Classical 

Christian School. This is the day that it graduated their first class of 

seniors. Thirteen years ago, Covenant Academy began as a K-8 school 

and today it is an established and accredited K-12 school with graduates 

going off to pursue degrees in engineering, teaching, business and more.

CA DRAMA DEPARTMENT PRESENTS A NIGHT OF MELODRAMA! 

The CA Players performed “The Last One Seen at the Scene of the Crime” a 

melodrama, comedy and western all rolled into one play. The evening was 

enjoyed by audience members of all ages and the cast and crew received a 

standing ovation. The wild success of the play was due in no small part to 

the long hours of practice by the students and the tireless encouragement 

and direction of the CA drama instructors Mrs. Nathalie Carr and Mr. 

Brian Carr. Both Mr. and Mrs. Carr graduated with a degree in Fine Arts 

from Southwest Texas State University and Mr. Carr is a successful actor 

who can currently be seen in commercials for Academy Sports and more. 

Congratulations to the entire Covenant Academy Drama department.

Winner of Master Chef Season 4, cookbook author and founder of “The

Spring Banquet. Chef Manfe’ designed a three course menu specifically for 

the event and was on hand to sign cookbooks and meet guests. This year’s 

fundraiser raised over $49K with all proceeds directly benefiting students 

and faculty by keeping tuition affordable, providing scholarships and the 

school resources it needs to ensure excellence in education. 


NEARLY 8,000 CLASS OF 2017 GRADUATES 

EARN DIPLOMAS 

The 11 Cypress-Fairbanks ISD graduation ceremonies held at the Berry 

Center May 24 th -27 th produced a total of 7,951 graduating seniors of the 

class of 2017. 

More than 64,000 guests attended the commencements at the Berry Center 

as thousands of others watched the ceremonies through live streaming on 

the district Livestream account. 

The live streams generated more than 12,000 combined views from 

57 different countries as of June 5 th . Combined with more than 13,000 

views on the CFISD YouTube channel, total streams amounted to more 

than 25,000 viewers. The 2016-2017 school year marked the 10 th year for 

graduation ceremonies to be streamed live for the public.

Jonathan Mayer, the head 

swim coach at Cypress Falls 

High School, was named 

the district’s first director of 

aquatics on June 1 st . 

Mayer has served as the 

Golden Eagles’ swim 

coach for the past three 

years and was named 

the District 17-6A Boys’ 

Coach of the Year in 2017. 

Prior to arriving in CFISD, 

he served as the aquatics department head at Life Time Fitness in 

Sugar Land for one year. 

He also served as the director of aquatics at the YMCA of Greenwich 

in Greenwich, Conn. At the YMCA, he oversaw a multi-million-dollar 

Olympic-sized natatorium and a staff of 40 employees. 

“We are excited to transition Jonathan into his new role,” said Ray 

Zepeda, CFISD director of athletics. “The natatorium will be a great 

asset to our district and local community. We feel that Jonathan 

has the experience and personal relationships with our existing 

aquatics team that will allow him to help grow and improve our 

aquatics program.”

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL 

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY 

Copper Creek Meadows Community finished the school year with a 

Bridging Ceremony for troops moving from one Girl Scout level to another. 

Troop leaders told the gathering of family and friends about the girls’ 

activities during the past year. We heard about services projects, special 

trips and badges and awards earned. Then, each girl crossed the bridge to 

be recognized by the audience and greeted with a token of her new level. 

Some troops had flowers; others donned their new vests or sashes. Each 

of the bridging troops had created decorations for the ceremony. 

Copper Creek Meadows Community activities will begin again in the fall, 

including recruitment events and activities for new Girl Scouts and their

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT 

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found 

in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant 

in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting 

helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership 

skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. 

Junior troop 113035 reports that they earned their horse badge at Cypress 

Trails. 

Troop 16503 used their hard earned cookie money to go to a new campsite 

and explore. They hiked trails and played in the Guadalupe River. They 

also caught up with the San Antonio Astronomy Group and had a chance 

to view the stars through their telescope! 

Many of our Girl Scouts will be attending San Jacinto Council’s day, twilight 

and resident camps. At camp, Girl Scouts swim and sail, canoe, practice 

archer and learn to ride horseback. Camp sessions include all kinds of arts 

and crafts, camp traditions, songs and campfires and making new friends! 


The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities 

that allow them to:

• Build self-confidence. 

• Reinforce ethical standards. 

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as 

individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility

FC CYPRESS SOCCER CLUB - 

TRYOUTS, CAMPS & REGISTRATION 

After a successful inaugural season, FC Cypress Soccer Club will 

be starting their second season and is now recruiting players. 

Practices are held at Ollin Sports Therapy, 16636 Hahl and House 

Road, Cypress. The club was founded by Cy-Fair resident and 

former professional player, Marc Castillo. Students who join FC 

Cypress can enter one of three different leagues. Registrations are 

currently running through September 1 st . 

The U6 Soccer School-an 8-week program designed to introduce 

players to the sport. Enrollees meet Friday evenings from 6-7 PM 

to practice for 30 minutes and play games for 30 minutes. 

Players in the U7-U10 competitive league - which lasts 13 weeks, 

enter the Player Development League hosted by Klein Soccer 

club at Meyer Park and play against other teams. Practices take 

place twice per week at Ollin Athletics. 

Players in the U11 Select Academy - players who possess the 

right attitude and desire to take their soccer play to the next 

level. Training sessions will be twice per week at Ollin Athletics 

and games on weekends as part of TYSA, competing against other 

teams of the same age group and skill level.

EPIPHANY BINGO 

Epiphany Bingo has been conducting bingo games on the west side since February 

14, 1986. Epiphany conducts their bingo games every Friday night except holidays. 

THERE IS NO SMOKING ALLOWED DURING ALL BINGO GAMES. They have a jackpot 

game of $750. Maximum prize giveaways of $2,500, allowed by law, are given away 

every Bingo Night! They have security, lighted parking, big screen color monitor, 

computerized bingo equipment, snack bar and large cash prizes. Profits are used for 

charitable outreach programs, building expansion, and payment towards debt. 

Epiphany Catholic Church conducts its bingo games at the Church Community Center,

CAMP CORNERSTONE IS THE

Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone United 

Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the completion of

Summer Camps 

Summer camps will be offered in July for ages 8 to 12 and 13 to 18. Camps 

will center around themes of “Contemporary Art Through the Ages.” Each 

camp meets Monday through Friday from 9 AM to Noon at the Pearl 

Fincher Museum of Fine Arts. Cost of the week-long camps is $140 for 

members of the museum or $175 for non-members. Family memberships 

to the museum are available for just $55. In collaboration with AAUW and 

Klein ISD, a special camp will also be held once a week for students with

This summer answer the call to be an Agent of Hope. Week one we’ll be 

recruiting campers to be Agents and learning what it means to give hope 

to others. Then we will enter into a week at the Agent Academy to train, 

learn and grow as a team. Finally, in week three, campers will receive their 

secret mission as they are sent out into the world to be Agents of Hope! 

Weekly Themes: 

• Calling All Agents. You are being called by God to bring hope to the world.

THE HOUSTON CHORAL SOCIETY 2017 SUMMER 

VOCAL PERFORMANCE CAMP JULY 10-14, 2017 

The Houston Choral Society (HCS) announces its 2017 Summer Vocal 

Performance Camp – Voyages of the Voice Finders. This one week camp 

is for students entering grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. The camp runs July 

10-14, 2017. For students entering grades 3-5, the camp runs from 9 

AM to noon and for students entering grades 6-8 the camp runs from 

1-4 PM. Students will learn how music enriches their brain, body and 

mind through singing classical, folk and popular music. Finding your 

voice, learning how to improve breath and tone quality, musicianship, 

singing on sight and music games will be taught one-on-one and in 

ensembles. Workshops are led by professional, certified music teachers 

and singers from The Houston Choral Society. 

The HCS Summer Vocal Performance Camp provides an exceptional 

education to all of our students with an excellent student/teacher 

ratio. Camps are filling up fast so we encourage parents to sign up 

for camps now. Camp tuition for 15 hours of instruction is only $175. 

The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $14 

per hour. HCS offers these camps with four degreed instructors for less 

than $12 per hour. Each family will receive 2 free tickets for the end of 

class performance. Additional tickets can be purchased for only $5 per 

person. The camps include two complimentary tickets to the show, a 

camp t-shirt, music and other needed materials.

National Days in July 

Did you know that every month has some sort of National Day, week or 

even the whole month is a National month? Some could be used to plan a 

fun day with the family or create a project for the kids on a rainy afternoon 

or maybe just start an interesting discussion! Here is a partial list (there 

are many more) of what we found for the month of July: 

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY 

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals 

have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, 

cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until 

frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. 

• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue 

black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. 

• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom 

production. 

• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove 

them. 

• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, 

coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. 

• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. 

• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water 

of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, 

instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a 

bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

run by volunteers and 100 percent of the proceeds raised from area 

restaurants go directly to the Food Bank. For more than four weeks,

Saturday, August 12 th - Galveston Sand Crab 5K and 10K Night Run 

benefitting the Galveston Island Humane Society. Start and finish at 

East Beach in Apfel Park. Run entirely on sand, the Sand Crab is a great 

way to get a little exercise under the stars on a beautiful Galveston 

Beach at night and have a few beers and other refreshments while 

listening to great music with other runners on a summer night. All races 

are chip timed including the Kid’s Mile. The Kid’s Mile will start at 8 PM. 

Parents are welcome to run with kids free of charge. The 5K/10K will 

start at 8:30 PM. The 5K run is very walker friendly with a 2 hr cut off. 

The 10K is walkable but will share the 2 hr cut off. 10K runners must 

be at the 3.1-mile turnaround within 1 hour. The Sand Crab starts on 

beautiful East Beach and runs west for 3.1 or 1.55 miles (depending on 

the event). Then turns back to the finish. The course is lit with led lights. 

Runners are required to run with a flashlight or head lamp. There are 2 

watertops with sports drink and water hit 2X each for the 10K and 1 hit

FRIED CHICKEN 

You could make this on National Fried Chicken Day July 6 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

2 to 3 pounds chicken, cut into pieces 3 cups all-purpose flour 

5 tbsp. seasoned salt 3 tbsp. garlic powder 

Salt and pepper to taste 

4 eggs, beaten 

Vegetable oil for frying 

DIRECTIONS: 

In a shallow plate or bowl, mix the flour, seasoned salt, garlic 

powder, salt and pepper. Roll or shake the chicken pieces in the 

flour mixture and place on a platter. Then dip each chicken piece 

in the egg and roll again in flour mixture. 

Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees 

C). Fry coated chicken pieces in hot oil for about 5 minutes on each 

side. Cover skillet and cook on lower heat for about 10 minutes. 

Remove cover, turn up heat and fry for 5 minutes on each side to 

make chicken crispy. Chicken is done when it is no longer pink 

inside and its juices run clear. Drain fried chicken on paper towels

EASY CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM

National Ice Cream Day July 16 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 

2/3 cup chocolate syrup 

2 cups heavy cream 

DIRECTIONS: 

Line a 9x5 inch loaf pan with aluminum foil. 

In a large bowl, stir together condensed milk 

and chocolate syrup until color is even. In a 

separate bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks 

form. Fold cream into chocolate mixture and 

pour all into prepared pan. Cover and freeze 6 

hours, until firm.
