“Boston Strangler” Funny Car
Returns to Epping
Arnie Karp and Rick McGarvey
came to New England Dragway for
this year’s NHRA Mello Yello New
England Nationals expecting to
see another great weekend of drag
racing.
What half of the duo didn’t expect
was the reveal of a painstakingly
detailed reproduction of one of the
famed “Boston Strangler” funny
cars.
Karp and McGarvey were part of
a team that included Keith Hughes
and the late Bob Ellison. With Karp
handling the driving chores the
team terrorized the funny car circuit
keeping countless thousands of
race fans on their feet whenever
they competed.
Paul decided to use the “Danger
Zone” chassis, an original Ken Cox
built design to move the project
along. With all the pieces in place
the build started to move forward.
Maura recalled the team spent
countless hours working on the
aged fiberglass body in their quest
to bring Arnie’s dream to life. The
effort resulted in a pristine body
that was painted and lettered by
Blair and Don, rekindling long lost
memories of a true drag racing icon.
Making the event more special
was the fact this was designed to
be more than a show car. Everyone
involved in the project was set on
building a car to race and allow the
name “Boston Strangler” to once
Arnie Karp returns to the New England Dragway starting line to line up his beloved
“Boston Strangler” Funny Car with Jon Wall at the helm. (Richie Coury photo)
While it’s hard to keep a secret in
this digital age of ubiquitous social
media forums Paul Zona and Blair
Smith, along with Maura McGonigle
and Don Parlee managed to
partially pull off the feat. Their goal
was to unveil the funny car to an
unsuspecting McGarvey and Karp.
All appeared to be going as planned
until Rick was inadvertently tipped
off about the surprise a few days
before the New England Nationals.
Although Rick had a good idea of
what was hidden under the car
cover, Arnie didn’t. The look on an
4
again dominate the quarter mile.
Jon Wall helped in that regard
when he posted a 7.765 on the
scoreboards just missing the
original car’s best E.T. of 7.762 with
Arnie at the helm.
Including several races throughout
New England Dragway for 2017 the
team has a schedule of nine races
on the calendar, including the Funny
Car Nationals in Pennsylvania
July 15. There’s a footnote to the
story according to Maura. “After
the unveiling ceremony I talked
with Arnie’s grandchildren. None
Fitting the body of the “Quarterhorse” and ”Little Red Wagon” to its new chassis was
step one before moving into the shop for a full restoration. (Maura McGonigle photo)
unsuspecting Arnie Karp’s face was
priceless and worth every minute
spent bringing this car back to life.
How the project came to be is a
story in itself. During an evening
dinner with Zona, McGonigle and
Smith, Arnie expressed a desire to
build a “Boston Strangler” tribute
car as a bucket list item. That lit
the thinking lamp and a few weeks
later Blair, Paul and Maura began
for formulate a plan. Blair, who has
a collection of nostalgia funny car
plastic set aside for future projects
thought he might have a body
matching one of the cars carrying
the “Boston Strangler” moniker.
The one chosen was originally
Frank Oglesby’s “Quarterhorse”
that eventually became the “Little
Red Wagon”.
of them ever saw him or one of
his cars race. All they had were
pictures and stories shared by
Arnie about the “Boston Strangler.
“They were grateful for everything
their grandfather’s friends did to
bring those memories alive. That
made the work truly worthwhile.”
(l-r) Arnie Karp, Renee Karp, Joanne
McGarvey and Rick McGarvey shed more
than a few tears as the car was unveiled.
Race Your Ride During Wednesday and Friday
Street Nights
One of the unique factors about
Street Night at New England
Dragway is anyone with a valid
driver’s license can take a shot at
the track. You don’t need to have
all the performance goodies or a
tire smoking monster. All you
need is your daily driver and
a desire to experience the
thrill of putting the go pedal
to the metal.
Every Wednesday and
Friday night men and
women of all ages
converge on New
England Dragway
to feel the rush of
adrenaline of safe
and legal racing
on the same
track as the
professionals
compete on.
Some come
up to race
against
t h e i r
friends
just for
bragging
rights. Others
come to set up a
baseline before they make any
performance modifications. But
most of all, everyone comes to
have fun.
There are a few rules. First, if
you’re under the age of 18 you do
need parental permission. Track
officials can help you navigate that
process. Your car or truck must
have working seat belts, safe DOT
approved tires, working headlights
and taillights. In some cases you
may be required to wear a
helmet and long pants
are required. It
all depends upon
the elapsed time
of your vehicle.
Rules are a
bit different for
motorcycles. Riders
need over the ankle
shoes or boots, a leather
or jacket and a helmet.
If your machine is quick
enough you’ll need leather
pants, as well.
We know the first time out
can be a bit stressful; especially
if you haven’t watched racing
before. Don’t worry. Track
officials can help you understand
the process for making a run.
You’ll learn about the Christmas
Tree, how to read a time slip, and
ways to improve your reaction time.
To learn more call the track at
(603) 679-8001 and ask a member
of our team to send you a Street
Legal Style Drags by AAA brochure.
It will help get you on track to a
season of fun and excitement.
Wednesday and Friday Street Nights are
presented by
Science Provides Benefits and
Performance for Drag Racing
By Gregg Hekimian
Physicist, Hekimian Racing Engines
Vacuum Insulated Cryogenics
sounds like science fiction, but
they’re facts of life at Hekimian
Racing Engine’s Laboratory.
Heat treating material to make
it stronger has been around for
a long time, but what the early
pioneers didn’t know was that
exposing materials to extreme cold
temperatures could have the same
and an even far greater effect.
Liquid Nitrogen {LN2} and the
means to handle it were in short
supply back then.
Enter Real Cryogenics, a process
in which material such as steel and
aluminum are exposed to severe
cold, down to the -320 degrees F
{boiling point} to make them more
durable and stabilize the metal or
aluminum. The closer you get to
absolute zero (-459.67 F) the better,
but once you cross that line of -460
F, a point of severely diminishing
returns, everything explodes into a
powder like substance.
However, by correctly applying
Vacuum Insulated Cryogenics
technology to engine components
& machine tools, will last three to
five times longer and in some cases
even longer.
Hekimian Racing Engines as
an option are built with blocks,
crankshafts, cylinder heads, pistons
and more (anything that has a wear
process,) that have been treated
in a vacuum-insulated Cryogenic
chamber.
Hekimian Racing Engines vacuuminsulated
Cryogenics is the real
Cryogenics. There are two primary
keys to the success of the process.
The first is the design of the
Cryogenic Chamber, also called
the Cryogenic Processor. Our
Machines hold a US Patent.
The chambers proprietary shape
(Cylindrical) optimizes LN2 even
dispersal of the -320 F temperature,
but never hits the components,
it only cools down the chamber.
Though liquid nitrogen is used
to drop the temperature in the
chamber, it never actually touches
the metal components being
treated. This would be a latent
disaster.
The second key to success is the
rate at which the components
are cooled, brought back to room
temperature and then tempered to
+ 300 F, then back down to room
temps. This process is all within a
4-day period. We go down slowly,
so many degrees per minute,
and then hold it at -320 F for 10-
12 hours, so the Atomic Micro
Structure can get very close to
themselves and eliminate all the
internal voids and stress risers
which are in the component. Then
we start coming back slowly all the
way up to +300 F for tempering.
This relaxes the metals that just
went through a chaotic Math state.
Then slowly back down to room
temperature. This entire process
is computer controlled to the
exponential degree.
It changes the metal completely, if
I could use the term for going from
steel to Kryptonite.
If not properly applied, Fake
Cryogenics can do more harm than
good. The process can produce
latent damages, structural problems
in treating metal that, though not
immediately apparent, will reveal
themselves in an engine’s life cycle.
But, with Real Vacuum Insulated
Cryogenics, all the flaws and voids
internally are taken out. It also
removes the microscopical peaks
and valleys on the surface of the
metal making more HP, Tq & long
term reliability.
One small example; Oil travels
around the rod and main journals
that actually aerates the oil and
heats it up and causes loss of
lubricant.
After Cryogenics, these peaks and
valleys on the polished journals are
gone so oil can do its authorized
job of lubricating.
How many times have you seen
valve seats distort in the aluminum
head? Too many times I’m afraid.
Aluminum and metals, even the
strongest ones out there move
around due to the fact that there are
still voids in the core of the metals.
After Cryogenics, the metal is now
stable and proper tolerances are
in place to stay. Results; longevity,
more horsepower, more torque.
Jan Richardson - Gentleman, Competitor
There are many words that you
could use when talking about Jan
Richardson, but everyone would
likely agree the word that best
describes him is gentleman.
Surrounded by family the man
who had a passion for life Jan lost
his battle with cancer on May 5,
2017.
Jan’s love of drag racing began
in his teens where he was taught
about the intricacies of competition
by local standout Larry “Cool
Breeze” Little. Jan kept Larry’s
memory alive by proudly displaying
the “Cool Breeze” name of the side
of his 160 MPH machine. More
importantly, he shared the lessons
learned early on with his fellow
competitors.
One of Jan’s longtime friends
Fletcher Hillman summed up his
life by saying, “Jan would help out
anyone in need and had a heart of
gold.” That sentiment is echoed by
everyone who knew him.
His “Big Dog” racing Malibu
wagon was an absolute terror on
the quarter mile. When you lined
up against him and looked at the Pit
Bull graphic on the side of his car
you knew it wasn’t going to be an
easy round.
Jan’s son Ian plans to keep the
“Cool Breeze” memory alive by
campaigning the Malibu. No doubt
his father will be looking down with
a smile and whispering to Ian’s
competition, “If you think you’re hot,
The Breeze will cool you off.”
New England Dragway
Helps Promote Highway
Safety August 5th
On August 5, staff from the
Injury Prevention Center at the
Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-
Hitchcock (CHaD) will be present
throughout the New Hampshire
Lottery Jet Cars Under the Stars
show. Their attendance is another
way that New England Dragway
is helping CHaD to promote their
“Safe Choices” highway safety
educational programs throughout
New Hampshire.
Emphasis this year is on child
passenger safety and teen driving.
If you have a little one that you think
is ready for a booster seat, a teen
driver or soon to be teen driver be
sure to stop by the pavilion to see
what they have to offer.
CHaD’s Child Passenger Safety
(CPS) Coordinator, Julie Dietrich,
will be available to discuss car
seat safety and the proper use of
booster seats. This is important
because, to the surprise of many
parents, too many children are
not properly restrained. It is not
uncommon for parents to be
uncertain about when their child
can safely begin using booster
seats. Therefore, many children
skip over the use of a booster
seat. Improper use of car seats
and booster seats can present
very real danger in the event of a
crash. Stop by this event and have
your child try to walk under the
child passenger safety bar. If they
can, it means a booster seat is still
highly recommended for them.
The CPS coordinator will have
some booster seats available at
no charge.
CHaD’s Youth Operator
Coordinator, Chelsie Hubicsak-
Muldowney, and Highway Safety
Specialist, Howard Hedegard
will also be available to provide
important information about
distracted and impaired driving
and the importance of seat belt
use. They will have giveaways
and educational handouts.
New Hampshire’s hands-free law
has reduced distracted driving
crashes significantly. Prior to the
law, distracted driving was the
second leading cause of fatal
crashes. It is now number six.
Although this is a big reduction,
there is still room for improvement.
Come try our virtual reality
simulator to see just how risky
distracted driving really is.
Also, did you know that teen
drivers have the highest crash
rate. That’s right even higher
than the crash rate of grandma
and gramps. New Hampshire has
an increasingly active teen driver
educational program. Stop by to
learn more about how you can
help your teen driver or soon to be
driver understand the importance
of making good and safe choices.
CHaD’s Injury Prevention Center
and New England Dragway
take improving knowledge and
education about driving safely
serious. So, please come by the
pavilion and chat with any or all of
the representatives at the “Safe
Choices” highway safety event on
August 5 during the NH Lottery Jet
Cars Under the Stars show.
