AMESBURY – For the last
few months, the most frequently
asked question Bob O’Brien,
CEO of CI Works, hears most
often from his 55 business and
manufacturing company tenants
is not about rental fees or space
needs, but when will the new craft
beer brewery open for business.
To O’Brien’s relief, the good
news is that Stevie Bareford,
who operates the start-up family
brewery, Barewolf Brewing, plans
to start brewing his first batch of
mash this week.
Paul Bareford, father of Stevie
and partner in Barewolf, hopes
the first pour at the brewery’s
tasting room on Morrill Street
will be made before the end of
the month.
Parking Garage Goes to City Council
By Stewart Lytle, Reporter
–––––––––––––––––
NEWBURYPORT – The city’s planning and historical commissions last week
moved the controversial parking garage to its final step, approving the 207-vehicle
garage for the site of the old Fitness Factory on Merrimac Street.
Jim McCarthy, the planning commission chairman, said the remaining step is a
very big one. The city council now must agree to fund about half of the $11 to $12
million garage.
Planning director Andy Port said he views the council’s decision to be more than
approving the garage. Because $6.5 million for the garage is coming from the state
and federal coffers, he likes to think the council is voting to accept the grants, which
would subsidize the opening of the waterfront by eliminating 100 dirt parking spaces.
The dirt parking spaces would be replaced with grass and open space for events.
The planning commission made it as a condition of its approval for the garage that
waterfront and create what it describes as “meaningful new park space” east and west
of Market Landing Park.
The MassDOT will contribute $5 million toward the garage. The Federal Transit
Theater in the Open
and the Summer of Firsts
Theater in the Open, recently
selected as curators of the Gatekeeper’s
House in Maudslay State Park, opened
their summer season Saturday, July
8th with a production of Sophocles’
Antigone, played in repertory
with their production of William
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, set to open on July 15th.
“This is an ambitious summer
season for Theater in the Open,”
stated Artistic Director, Edward
Speck, “and we’re really pleased to be
able to offer these two productions
free to our community. Sophocles’
Antigone is a tragic play about the power structure in Ancient Greece
and it expresses the values and laws of that culture. Balanced against
that work, we offer Shakespeare’s classic comedy, A Midsummer
Night’s Dream, so our audience sees two plots derived from the same
mythological moment; two stories that use that mythology — in
very different ways — to express cultural values.”
Director Stephen Haley returns to Theater in the Open to tackle
both plays, running through August 20th. With a cast of 20 actors,
Haley explores these two very different visions of the world of
Ancient Greece. The titular Antigone, a woman guided by her own
moral code to stand against the
laws of Thebes, is presented in
a production that incorporates
dance with Sophocles’ classic
text. In “A Midsummer Night’s
Dream,” humans and fairies
descend upon the forest outside
of Athens to connect with their
true loves as Shakespeare explores
the balance of power and themes
of the masculine and feminine in
his timeless comedy.
In another first for Theater in
the Open this season, we will
be hosting a theater festival the
weekend of August 12-13. That
weekend we have four distinct
offerings for the community.
We begin on Saturday morning
at 11AM with Family Hour
in the Open, an interactive
hour of creative exploration
and performance. At 2PM
we’ll once again be staging
our spring production, Snow
White: A Through the Looking
Glass Panto, then on Sunday
afternoon, audiences can see
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
at 1PM followed by Antigone
at 4PM. All performances are
free and open to the public.
We’ll also offer fun, games and
light refreshments between the
performances on both days, so
families are invited to pack up
their picnic baskets, the dog
and their imaginations and join
us for a weekend of inventive,
exciting theater. Antigone will be
performed July 16, 23, 30 and
August 13 at 4pm.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
will be performed July 15, 22,
29, and August 19 and 20 at
4pm, and August 13 at 1pm. All
performances free and open to
the public.

Parking Garage Goes to City Council
Continued from page 1
Authority is expected to
contribute $1.5 million, although
the city had hoped for $2 million
from that agency.
Although some neighbors still
object to the proposed garage,
the primary complaint against
the project has been its cost. Port
was working last week with two
sets of estimators to finalize the
cost projections over the next
two weeks for the council to act
on.
“It costs more to make a
parking garage fit into the
downtown,” Port said. “Aesthetics
are expensive.”
The garage is being designed
to look like other buildings in
downtown, Port said.
The brick building at Merrimac
and Titcomb streets has long been
the projected spot for the parking
garage. Owned by New England
Development, the building now
houses a furniture store and two
gyms.
After months of negotiations
between Stephen Karp’s
development company and the
city, the purchase price for the
property is $2,184,000.
The agreement to purchase
the building and land does not
include allocating any parking
spaces for a proposed Waterfront
West hotel, as once discussed
between the city and New
England Development.
If approved by the council,
the entire building will be torn
down. Not all of the property
will be used for the garage.
The garage will also be a
terminal for the Merrimack Valley
Doing Their Best for Beer
Regional Transit Authority. The
MVRTA has said that 45 spaces
must be designated for those
vehicles of commuter bus riders.
That could be a thorny issue left
for the council to resolve.
It has long been a goal of
the city to remove the dirt
parking lots on the waterfront.
The garage was conceived as a
solution to that problem, but
some residents wanted to ensure
that the waterfront spaces would
be gone at the time the new
garage is built.
If approved, construction
would begin this fall with the
demolition of the old Fitness
Factory. Construction of the
new garage would be modular
with much of the components
assembled elsewhere and erected
on site, Port said.
LOCAL SINGER-
SONGWRITER MELISSA
FERRICK HITS THE
FIREHOUSE STAGE
Growing up in Ipswich in the
70’s, Melissa played the violin and
went to jazz clubs with her father.
She learned guitar in elementary
and started writing songs in high
school. The rest, as they say, is
history. Widely regarded as one of
the most prolific and hardworking
artists in the business, Ferrick has
released 17 albums over the past 25
years and shows no signs of slowing
down. “I’ve been a fan of Melissa
Ferrick since I first saw her open for
Ani DiFranco in 2013.” Firehouse
Executive Director says. “Her
songwriting is some of the best in
the business and she always puts on
a great show. And the fact that she
lives in Newburyport is the icing
on the cake.” Signed to Atlantic
Records in 1992 at the age of 21,
she released her first two albums
on Atlantic before moving on to
W.A.R. Records. In 2000, Ferrick
launched her own label, Right On
Records. Having shared the stage
with Morrissey, Marc Cohn, John
Hiatt, Weezer, Tegan & Sara, Bob
Dylan, and many others, Melissa
Ferrick is the voice of a generation.
Tickets are $25 for non-members,
$22 for members, students, and
seniors. The Firehouse’s 2016/2017
ROWLEY - The Rowley Cultural Council is looking for volunteers who would like to serve on the local
council. The mission of the Cultural Council is to promote excellence, access, education and diversity in
the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences in order to improve the quality of life for all Rowley residents.
The Rowley Cultural Council receives funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to make grants
to individuals and organizations in our own community. The Council is made up of volunteers who are
appointed by the town selectmen and are responsible for deciding how
to award the grant money in ways that will best serve the local cultural
needs. The minimal time commitment of three to four meetings per
year provides a great benefit to our community. More information
about the Rowley Cultural Council can be found online at www.
refuge, but are hard to find. They
are either active at night, wary of
people, or both. Though you may
not see them, their tracks can be just
as interesting to find. Go out on the
refuge with intern Dominic Noce
as he teaches you how to find and
identify tracks of different types of
animals. Meet the program leader in
the refuge visitor center auditorium
PLUM ISLAND WALKING
TOURS
The walking tours of Plum Island,
North Point, led by Bill Sargent,
will run on Sundays at 11 AM. The
90-minute walking tours, will run
from North Point’s Plum Island
Lighthouse to the south jetty and
back, rain or shine. Parking in the
effects of last winter’s erosion.
Changes did occur over this past
Winter and this Spring. Mother
Nature is in charge! Investigate the
Coast Guard archeology site and
speculate on whether some of the
artifacts could have been used to set
U-boat nets across the Merrimack
River. Visit the Sand Machine where
up to an acre of sand flow through
natural weirs in the South Jetty
during high course tides. Discuss
how the Army Corps of Engineers,
the city of Newburyport, universities,
and colleges have all been working
together to work with nature and
find a solution to the rapid erosion
on the point. Tour participation
costs $10, payable to the Coastlines
Project. Bring a camera, sensible
shoes and a keen sense of humor
with you. Bill Sargent is the author
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Orofacial pain includes a number
of clinical problems involving the
chewing (masticatory) muscles or
temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Problems can include TMJ
discomfort, muscle spasms in
the head, neck or jaw, migraines,
cluster or frequent headaches, pain
with the teeth, face or jaw, anxiety
and depression.
You swallow approximately
2,000 times per day, which causes
the upper and lower teeth to come
together and push against the skull.
People who have an unstable bite,
missing teeth, or poorly aligned
teeth can have trouble because
the muscles work harder to bring
the teeth together, causing strain.
People with seemingly good teeth/
bite are also susceptible. Pain can
also be caused by clenching or
grinding teeth, trauma to the head
and neck, or poor ergonomics.
Temporomandibular disorders
(TMD) affect more than 10
million Americans. Your TMJ’s are
located where the skull connects
your lower jaw to the muscles
on the sides of your head and
Some of us suspected it
was too good to be true: that
mild exercise of any type was
good for us and helped us live
longer. A new study shows that,
unfortunately, we may be right.
New research out of Brigham
Young University (published in
Preventive Medicine journal)
shows that we can slow the type
of aging that happens in cells
if we do intense exercise. (Not
what I had in mind. How about
you?) To quote from one of the
study’s principals: “The more
Brighter Smiles...
face. They control the joint’s
movements. Women between the
ages of 20 and 40 are the most
frequent sufferers because of the
added estrogen in their bodies.
Estrogen impacts the body’s
natural pain fighters (endorphins),
increases inflammation in the
temporomandibular joints, and
compromises the strength and
adaptive ability of all ligaments
One in eight Americans suffer
from headaches. Experts estimate
that 80 percent of all headaches
are caused by muscle tension,
which may be related to the bite.
Clenching the jaw muscles creates
tension in the muscles that close
the jaw, the main one of which
is the temporalis muscle. Signs
that may indicate a headache
from dental origin include: pain
behind the eyes, sore jaw muscles
or “tired” muscles upon awaking,
teeth grinding, clicking or popping
of the jaw joints, head and/or scalp
is painful to the touch, earaches
or ringing, neck and/or shoulder
pain, and dizziness.
Sleep disorders can also play
a role. If you have gone through
treatment and still experience
orofacial pain, you may have a
sleep disorder, such as bruxism
(grinding), or a sleep-related
breathing disorder, such as
snoring or sleep apnea. I will be
talking more about this in future
columns.
physically active we are, the less
biological aging takes place in
our bodies.”
Specifically the study talks
about telomeres. As we age,
there is less telomerase in each
cell, which counteracts the
shortening of telomeres on our
chromosomes. Without that
telomerase, the telomeres wear
down and cells wear out. Highactivity
exercise levels can give
up to a nine-year biological-age
advantage; moderate exercise
nets us seven years.
Translated into real terms,
it means that women need to
engage in physical cardiovascular
activity 30 minutes a day. That’s
five days a week. For men it’s
40 minutes. While there are
benefits to light-to-moderate
Head---Aches
Senior Scene
Mild Exercise Just Won’t Cut It
Your dentist has a variety of
treatments that can help relieve
your orofacial symptoms. One
device is called an orthotic, or
splint, that is worn over the
teeth to help stabilize the bite.
Permanent correction may require
equilibration (reshaping teeth),
building crowns, or orthodontics.
Many use a splint on a daily
basis to avoid having these other
treatments done.
Other things that can help
alleviate pain are using ice on the
painful area, eating a softer diet
and avoiding chewing gum or
ice, being conscious to keep teeth
Orofacial pain can range
from tolerable to debilitating.
Maintaining or correcting your bite
ensures optimal health, and proper
orofacial pain or discomfort. If
your dentist can not help you, ask
as well get the household chores
out what your doctor thinks.
TAURUS (April 20 to May
and
20) You’ve done some great work recently. Now it’s time to reward
yourself with something wonderful, perhaps a day at a spa or a night
out with someone very special.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You love to talk, but don’t forget to
make time to do a little more listening, otherwise you could miss out
on an important message someone might be trying to send you.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect indicates some
uncertainty about one of your goals. Use this period of shifting
attitudes to reassess what you really want and what you’re ready to
do to get it.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your social life is picking up, and
you’ll soon be mingling with old friends and making new ones. But
‘twixt the fun times, stay on top of changing workplace conditions.
VIRGO (August 23 September 22) A trusted friend offers
understanding as you vent some long-pent-up feelings. Now, move
on from there and start making the changes you’ve put off all this
time.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might well feel uneasy
as you face a difficult situation involving someone close to you. But
you know you’re doing the right thing, so stick with your decision.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’re a good friend to
others. Now is the time to allow them to be good friends to you. Rely
on their trusted advice to help you get through an uncertain period.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Family and
friends are always important, but especially so at this time. Despite
your hectic workplace schedule, make a real effort to include them
in your life.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That project you’ve
been working on is almost ready for presentation. But you still need
some information from a colleague before you can consider it done.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t let those negative
attitudes that have sprung up around you drain your energies. Shrug
them off, and move ahead with the confidence that you can get the
job done.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Aspects favor some dedicated
fun time for the hardworking Piscean. A nice, refreshing plunge into
the social swim can recharge your physical and emotional batteries.
BORN THIS WEEK: You love to travel and be with people. You
probably would be happy as a social director on a cruise ship.
