Mokena Fire Protection District celebrates 100th anniversary
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
Darlene and Clifford
Whyte have attended many
of Mokena’s Fourth of July
celebrations throughout the
years.
Residents of Mokena
since the 1960s, the couple
has watched firsthand as the
town has grown from a small
farming community into the
village it is today.
“When I moved here in
1968, the population was
350,” Clifford said. “[Mokena]
has grown, and the fire
department has grown along
with it.”
After attending Mokena’s
annual Fourth of July parade
on July 4, the couple made
sure to stop in and support
the Mokena Fire Protection
District at its 100th Anniversary
Celebration, as they
know how the fire district
has evolved with time.
“It was volunteer when we
first moved here,” said Darlene,
who moved to Mokena
in 1961. “Most of the firefighters
were farmers, and
they’d call them out of the
fields to go fight fires.”
The couple, along with
their son, daughter-in-law
and grandchildren, were
among many community
members who attended
the fire district’s anniversary
celebration, which took
place from 1-4 p.m. in the
Front Street Metra station
parking lot.
The event included a variety
of vendors, plenty of
food, face painting, a balloon
artists, Skiddles the Clown,
a magic show and a reptile
show. Additionally, many
of the fire department’s vehicles
were on display in a
touch-a-truck opportunity,
along with trucks and equipment
from local and supporting
companies, for community
members and children
Featured are the vehicles that were on display at the toucha-truck
exhibit during the celebration.
to climb inside and experience
for themselves.
Chief Howard Stephens
said that community members’
support of the Mokena
Fire Protection District and
its 100th anniversary has
been overwhelming. A yearlong
celebration, the July 4
community event was just
one part of everything the
district has been doing.
“We started the year with
visiting all of the schools
and doing spirit days at all
of our elementary schools,”
Stephens said. “We sold
shirts, and it wasn’t a fundraiser,
it was just for the
community to support us.
We sold over 700 shirts.
When we were driving in the
parade, we saw a lot of the
100th Anniversary shirts. …
Of the 700 shirts we sold, I’d
bet we saw all 700 of them.
It was fantastic.
“Everything we do is for
the community. The department
was started from the
community by a bunch of
farmers who saw a need for
a fire department. … We always
see support from the
community. We want to give
back for the support. We
wanted to say ‘Thank you’
to the community and everybody
who was in the department
before us.”
The chief said he was
grateful to all of the community
organizations and individuals
who were involved
with bringing the event together
and celebrating the
fire district’s 100th anniversary.
Community involvement
was central to the fire district
celebrating its centennial,
Assistant Chief Joe Cirelli
said.
“It’s nice seeing the community
come together,” Cirelli
said. “Our goal was to
have a celebration for our
community. … It’s their fire
department. It’s as much
their celebration as it is
ours.”
Ian and Meggan O’Malley
moved to Mokena four
years ago, and despite their
relatively short time living
in the area, the couple
was happy to support the
fire district and celebrate
its anniversary. With their
7-month-old son, Tommy,
and Ian’s mother, Catherina
O’Malley, the family was
excited to bring the young
boy to see all of the trucks,
Ian said.
“We went to the parade,
and [Tommy] likes trucks
and big moving things, so
we thought it’d be fun to
take him here to see them,”
Mokena. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
Entertainer Skiddles the Clown (left) chats with attendees Mason and Kristin Anaya (right),
of Mokena, at the celebration.
he said. “It’s a good thing
to do for the community to
come out and support.”
The event not only drew
the attention of Mokena
community members, but
also families from nearby
communities who celebrate
their Fourth of July in Mokena.
Marie and Jeff Connelly,
of Orland Park, were happy
to bring their children out to
the parade and enjoyed the
family-friendly event, Marie
said.
“We come to the Fourth of
July parade every year,” she
said.
With their two children
Avery, 5, and Taylor, 7, the
family enjoyed the magic
show and the touch-a-truck
opportunity.
With the weather cooperating,
the Fourth of July was
a good day for the community
all the way around.

McFadden ‘took care of ordinary people’
Former D210 board
member valued
public service, family
Megann Horstead
Freelance Reporter
The man went to work every
day.
So said Susan McFadden
about her son, Christopher
McFadden. The Frankfort
resident and school board
member was found dead June
29 in his home.
An attorney employed
by Mahoney, Silverman &
Cross law firm, Christopher
also was a former assistant
U.S. attorney, a Lincoln-Way
Community High School
District 210 Board of Education
member and most
recently a Frankfort School
District 157-C Board of Education
member.
“Public service was important
to him,” Susan said. “He
was the purest of heart, and
he never did anything for the
wrong reason.
“If there were ever a person
who lived by the Golden
Rule, I want to meet him,”
Susan said. “That was him.
... He was the type of person
who took care of ordinary
people.”
“We were really close, and
I’m heartbroken,” said Renato
Mariotti, of Chicago,
Christopher’s friend. “I met
From Page 5
Chris when he started at the
U.S. Attorney’s Office. We
went up the ranks together.
He was a good friend.”
Mariotti characterized
Christopher as a man of values
and said there are not too
many funny, good-natured
prosecutors like him.
“He left his job in the city
to be closer to his kids,” he
said. “That made an impression
upon me. He left a really
good job. He made a choice
not many lawyers would
make. They can’t find a way
to create that balance.”
The impression Christopher
left was strong, said Erin
Haldorson, Christopher’s
friend and classmate from Joliet
West High School’s 1993
graduating class.
“As a kid, a classmate
with that mix of qualities is
unforgettable,” Haldorson
said. “We had about 500
kids in our graduating class,
and I bet you would be hard
pressed to find one person
who didn’t know Chris. Chris
made school interesting. As
an adult, Chris kept his edgy
and outrageous sense of humor,
but his kind and caring
side was more at the surface.
His wife, Sarah, and their
three children were the loves
of his life, and they brought
out a softer side to him.”
Christopher’s brother, Jim
McFadden, of Gainesville,
Florida, said he was grateful
for the wonderful times they
shared as siblings.
“We did a lot of trips together,
jobs,” he said. “Actually,
we worked together umpiring
and refereeing games.”
Jim remembers the last
time the family got together.
“It was at our parents’ 45th
anniversary,” he said. “We
were able to talk. Most everybody
was there. We had a
good meal, nice laughs.”
Christopher McFadden poses with his two brothers, James
and Daniel, after graduating from Harvard University. He
went on to study at the Northwestern University School of
Law and later became an Assistant U.S. State’s Attorney.
Photo submitted
Christopher’s younger
brother, Dan McFadden, of
Minneapolis, said Christopher
will be missed.
“He was 12 years older
than me,” he said. “Christopher
was close with Jim, and
we grew closer later in life.
He took care of me. He took
me to orchards and apple
picking when mom was busy.
Being 12 years older, he provided
good advice, and he
helped me find my path.”
The story of Christopher’s
life is one that boasts of many
great highlights, Dan said.
“I think what I admire most
is he knew all the right things
to say — whether it was really
funny or good advice,”
he said. “He could tailor it to
any situation. Another thing
is he had this sense of optimism,
even in the darkest of
times, that never wavered.”
Dan wants his brother to
know how appreciative he is
to have known him.
“I hope he knows I tried to
act like him as much as I can
— super kind, generous,” he
said. “I want to make sure I
keep that alive.”
Whenever the two were
in the same town, Christopher
and Dan met up for dinner
and basketball games at
Northwestern University.
“That was one thing we
shared,” Dan said.
Haldorson recalled the last
time she, her fiancé, Christopher
and his wife met up for
lunch.
“It had been a couple
months since we had done
lunch,” she said. “It was a typical
thing we would do … It
was typical Chris. He always
had a smile on his face.”
Haldorson said the important
thing to note is how
much Christopher loved his
family.
“I would like Chris to be
remembered by the community
for his devotion to Sarah,
Brooke, Matthew and Erin,
as well as to his parents and
brothers, Jim and Dan,” she
said.
“I’ve not known anyone
like him, and I never will.
The the sad part of losing
someone like him is you
know you’ll never meet another
one like him.”
Christopher McFadden, 41,
was found dead in his home
June 29. An autopsy and
cause of death are pending.
Christopher is survived by
his parents, Susan and Terry
McFadden; his wife, Sarah
Bay McFadden; and his three
children, Brooke, Matthew
and Erin. Christopher is also
survived by two brothers,
James (Ginger) and Daniel
(Ashley); two nieces and a
nephew.

the Mokena Messenger | July 13, 2017 | 7
Longtime Mokena resident garners a Christian following through iChapel
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
It all started with a need
for prayer.
Brian Diddens — who
up until recently had been
a lifelong resident of the
southwest suburbs, living
in New Lenox and Mokena
— was talking with a friend
who was sick.
“I have a friend in Austin,
Texas, who is facing leukemia,”
Diddens said. “As her
pastor, she flew me down
there.”
Diddens spent a week
with her and her family in
May. During that time, a
request was made on Facebook
to pray for her.
“She was given two or
three days to live, but two or
three days turned into two
or three weeks,” Diddens
said. “[That] turned into
two or three months. They
are now projecting she has
two to three years.
“We had prayer requests
going out across the globe
for her.”
Then, Diddens found out
one of the girls who used
to babysit his children was
undergoing treatment for
cancer, as well. She started
putting prayer requests in.
“Now, people from all
over the globe who haven’t
met each other are calling
each other by name and
praying for each other,”
Diddens said. “There are
some beautiful prayers
actually being physically
typed [in addition] to those
just being read in silence.”
And from there, an idea
was born, as Diddens created
a Facebook group to
gather people from all over
the world to join in a prayer
ministry. He calls it iChapel.
“Everybody has a [smartphone],”
Diddens said. “It’s
the one thing that is even under
your pillow. You don’t
go anywhere without it. It’s
“Now, people
from all over
the globe who
haven’t met
each other are
calling each
other by name
and praying for
each other.”
Brian Diddens - former
Mokena resident
and pastor who created
a Facebook group for
people to pray for one
another and hopes to
create a prayer ministry
mobile application
that type of network that I
wanted to tap into to better
support not only people but
also the local churches.
“The intention was to
build a mobile, virtual
church.”
And it’s quickly spreading.
“We’ve created a basic
Facebook group to start,” he
said of iChapel. “We invited
a few friends [at first], but
we are now at [160] members.
We span six countries
and five continents. Prayer
requests come in every day.
There are requests that are
being read and prayed for
by 100 people a day.”
Some of those in the
group hail from Italy, India
and Ghana. And many
different denominations of
the Christian faith are represented.
Diddens was ordained
in the late 1990s as a local
teaching pastor and even
started a church in Joliet.
Former Mokena resident Brian Diddens created iChapel, a Facebook group, to gather people from all over the world to join
in a prayer ministry. He is currently working on a mobile application for iChapel. Photo Submitted
Over the course of his life,
he has practiced Christianity
in a number of faiths,
including Catholicism,
Episcopalian and nondenominational.
Most recently,
he was a member of Lincolnway
Christian Church.
He believes the iChapel
ministry is spreading because
of the need for prayer.
“I had a lady who reached
out to me from Australia,”
he said. “Her comment to
me was that she lost her
brother a year ago. She said
she still cries every day.
But she said that since she
joined iChapel, she doesn’t
feel so alone. Every prayer
request that comes in, she
comments on. It brings her
peace to know she is not
alone and that she can help
support others.
“The beauty of the chapel
is that you’re not alone.”
In addition to the prayer
requests, Diddens also posts
a daily devotional prayer.
He said he is working on
developing a mobile application
as a Phase 2 of
the iChapel. He also wants
to add something he calls
“Spending 15 minutes with
God” — a virtual bible
study.
Police Reports
Valuable construction equipment reported stolen
Two pieces of construction
equipment reportedly
were stolen from a development
a combined $1,000, and they
had been on a semi truck in a
parking lot, according to the
Don’t let HIP PAIN ruin your life
when we could fix it for good
New technologies and surgical techniques make hip replacement an
appropriate solution for more hip pain sufferers. Drs. McClellan and
Payne are experts in the anterior hip replacement approach. With its
smaller incision, the anterior approach has patients walking sooner
and much more…
• Less post-operative pain and muscle damage
• Faster recovery and shorter rehabilitation
• Better range of motion
• Reduced risk of hip dislocation
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
2017 Benet Academy
valedictorian hails from
Lockport
While students across the
country capped off their high
school experiences by completing
the general education
requirements, Lockport resident
Kiara Gallagher spoke
on behalf of Benet Academy’s
2017 graduating class
as its valedictorian at the
school’s annual commencement
ceremony.
Kiara credits her academic
success thus far to four key
factors.
“Besides having the grade
point average and working
hard for it, I had the right
combination of work ethic
and intelligence to accept the
honor,” she said.
Kiara’s mother, Kathy,
said seeing her daughter
speak at her commencement
ceremony as the school’s
valedictorian was extremely
meaningful to her.
“From my perspective, it
brought tears to my eyes,”
she said. “They don’t rank
students at Benet. From her
grade point average, we
knew it was a possibility.
The reality of it was emotional.”
Throughout her educational
career, Kiara largely
attended Lockport schools.
Kathy said Kiara took a
chance when she decided to
attend Benet Academy, and
she owned it.
“She knew no one at
Benet,” she said. “She took
a big risk. Her gut told her
Benet was where she wanted
to be.”
Kiara’s father, Kevin,
recounted the speech his
daughter delivered at the
commencement ceremony.
“She told the history of
where she came from, her
roots,” he said.
The honor of being valedictorian
meant the effort
Kiara put into her studies
did not go unnoticed, Kathy
said.
“I think it’s a nice recognition
for her hard work the
last four years,” she said.
“She’s very focused and
dedicated and passionate
about her grades.”
The Mokena Fire Protection
District has
been doing its part to
keep Mokena safe for 100
years now.
While its 100th Anniversary
Celebration (Page 3)
has come and passed, that
does not mean that the residents
they work so hard to
protect should stop celebrating
what these firefighters,
paramedics, officers and
other emergency personnel
do. In fact, it should serve
as a reminder that these
local public servants are
deserving of our appreciation
every day.
You do not necessarily
need to go out of your way
to thank these people every
time you see them, but do
your best to make their jobs
Letters to the Editor
The case for a fireworksfree
Mokena
I hate fireworks. I have
had dogs most of my life,
and most are deathly afraid
of fireworks.
I have written the mayor,
all of the members of the
[Village Board of Trustees],
talked to the previous police
chief, and I really don’t
think anybody cares about
the issue. A large percentage
of people I know in the
area don’t like, don’t use and
don’t possess fireworks.
I am even flexible. If [fireworks
were used] only on
the holiday, OK, but for a
week before and two weeks
after, it gets old.
I request that we have a
referendum on the ballot to
make Mokena a fireworksfree
village; I bet it would
pass.
Those who use fireworks
don’t care to clean up the
mess on your roof or in your
yard the next day, and what
about fire hazard? When
we first moved here, about
10:30 p.m. a squad car appeared
and told the people
across the street to end it at
11. It was done. This morning
at about 2:30 I called the
police about the noise [and
the] first question was, “Do
I want to sign complaints?”
I have no idea where
they are coming from, but
I would venture to guess
the cop on the street does.
The same person seems to
detonate them every night
around this time at different
intervals, [and] he has done
this for years.
In the Village’s [newsletter]
dated July 2017, at
the bottom, it states Illinois
easier. Do not park in front
of a fire hydrant; do not
drive on the shoulder when
an emergency requires a
lane or lanes to be closed,
because the shoulder may
need to be used to get more
personnel or vehicles to the
scene of the emergency; get
out of the way when you are
on the road and emergency
vehicles need to pass.
If you choose not to show
your appreciation overtly, at
least show your appreciation
by respecting how difficult
their jobs are and not making
them any harder than
they need to be.
State statute prohibits the
possession, sale and use of
fireworks. Mokena police
will be monitoring and addressing
any infractions
or complaints. If this is the
case, why do I have to agree
to sign a complaint before
police are dispatched?
I guess I would just like to
know, and I bet a number of
other people would like to
know also. Thank you.
John M. McGivney
Mokena resident
These are quite small
gestures, but I am confident
that the men and women
who work so hard to keep
common-sense displays of
gratitude.
Block party brings in toy donations for children’s hospital
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
At just 5 years old, Michael
Weeks was diagnosed
with leukemia. A difficult
time for both him and his
family, Michael spent three
years receiving often-painful
treatments at Advocate
Children’s Hospital in Oak
Lawn.
After each treatment, he
was allowed to choose a toy
or treat from a closet at the
hospital.
“It made me feel better,”
Michael said.
Now 14 years old, Michael
wanted to give back
and share the feeling that he
felt from receiving the toys
with other children going
through the same experience.
During his treatments,
Michael noticed that there
were not as many toys that
interested him as he became
older, which inspired him to
help give back to the hospital
and help to provide toys
for children of all ages.
In 2011, after Michael received
his last treatment, he
and his mother, Christine
Weeks, threw a block party
to celebrate Michael’s good
health and give back to the
hospital. Now an annual
event spanning seven years,
this year’s Stock the Closet
event took place on Saturday,
July 8, on Crystal Creek
Drive between Rosewood
Lane and Foxglove Lane in
Mokena.
“It’s a really good feeling.
It’s really nice. It’s nice to be
able to do it,” Christine said.
With the street closed
to traffic, families from
the neighborhood, sports
teams and those related to
the Weeks enjoyed a day
of sun and fun while they
showed their support for a
good cause. The fundraiser
generally attracts 150 to 200
people, Christine said.
Children enjoy their time exploring trucks during the block
party in Mokena.
Each year, the fundraiser
collects about $6,000, which
Christine takes to Toys “R”
Us to purchase toys to donate,
along with any toys
that were brought to the
event. In order to raise the
additional funds, basket and
split-the-pot raffles were offered,
along with a bean bag
tournament.
While the adults enjoyed a
day of food, drink and fundraising,
children ran about,
playing on any of the three
inflatables, a dunk tank, as
well as exploring military
vehicles and a firetruck from
the Mokena Fire Protection
District, which also attached
a firehose to a hydrant and
sprayed children with water
to beat the summer heat.
Many neighborhood families
and friends came to support
the Weeks’ cause. Todd
and Sheryl Orourke attended
on Saturday, along with their
13-year-old daughter, Sarah,
to show their support for the
Weeks.
“We came to help to support
the cause. We like to
give to kids going through
hard times,” Sheryl said. “…
We want to help give kids a
little more happiness.”
Todd added, “I’ve known
the Weeks for 14 years. It’s
good Michael recovered.
They’re very good people,
and I do what I can to help
them.”
Karin Bartemio, another
of the Weeks’ neighbors,
said that she has seen in her
own life the way the aftertreatment
treats benefit children
who are receiving care.
“My daughter had MRSA
and was at the children’s
hospital for five days when
she was 2. They let her pick
a treat, and that was the highlight
of her time there, even
though she was 2,” Bartemio
said. “… To be able to give
them a treat or a toy, it’s the
least we can do.”
Janet Mitchell, another
neighbor to the Weeks who
has attended the event every
year since 2011, added that it
is also an enjoyable summer
event.
“There’s always a good
crowd and enjoyable festivities,”
she said. “… [Christine]
puts on a nice activity
for everyone, and it’s the
perfect day for it.”
Mark and Kim Kowal,
bring their family every year
and enjoy spending time
with their neighbors while
helping children.
“Last year, I won all of
the 50/50 money, and I gave
Michael Weeks, who survived leukemia after treatment at Advocate Children’s Hospital, hits
the bull’s-eye and dunks his friend Annmarie Kerins during the Stock the Pantry charity
event and block party Saturday, July 8. Photos by Julie McMann/22nd Century Media
Nikki McDermott picks out what to spend her tickets on during the raffle. The proceeds
went to purchasing toys to be donated to Advocate Children’s Hospital.
it all back. I haven’t lived it
down,” Kim said. “… I think
it’s a great cause.”
Having seen Michael become
sick and get better
again, Amy Carter, a Lockport
resident and Christine’s
cousin, said it was a difficult
time.
“We were all really
scared,” she said. “It’s wonderful
that he’s doing so well
[now] and adjusting.”
The hospital had offered
the Weeks support and treatment
for Michael, and Carter
appreciates that they have
the chance to give back to it,
she said.
“I think anything that
can bring happiness, there’s
nothing else we can do, so
anything to make them smile
is great,” Carter said.

Youth theater camp to perform ‘Once on this Island Jr.’
Curtain Call Theatre
campers act, sing
and dance the
summer away
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
It is a whirlwind of a
month from tryouts to the big
show, but young actors and
actresses do it every summer
to practice and show off
their skills on stage.
Students in the senior Curtain
Call Theatre summer
camp, who range in age from
students just finishing fourth
grade to those entering high
school, are to perform “Once
on this Island Jr.” Those in
the junior camp performed
“Dinostars!” last weekend
and range in age from those
who just finished kindergarten
through those entering
fourth grade.
“I’m really proud of the
stuff we do in a very short
time,” said Marta Koonce,
who directs the senior camp
production. “The first week
is getting to know one another,
getting them ready for
auditions. Second and third
week and fourth week is
learning the show, costumes
— everything — the music
the choreography the acting,
blocking, then we play theater
games. Then, that last
week we have to have them
ready for a performance.
“It’s pretty incredible that
we pull off the shows that we
do.”
This year marks the 15th
year of Curtain Call Theatre’s
Emily McCabe Musical
Theatre Program.
Koonce directs the senior
camp, and the junior camp
was directed by Marisa Eason.
Eason said her aunt,
Koonce, got her involved
with the camp six years ago,
and she has been directing
the junior camp for the past
three.
Trevor Glatz (left), playing Daniel Beauxhomme, and Grace
Cessaretti, playing Ti Moune, rehearse in the gym at St. Mary
School during Curtain Call Theatre’s summer theater camp.
“I think the most rewarding
thing for me is seeing little
ones that I had when they
first started up until now,”
Eason said. “I think [they]
just gain so much knowledge
about public speaking
and confidence. It’s really a
learning experience in terms
of being your own person,
making choices on stage, being
confident in them, and it
really prepares them for the
older kids’ camp.”
She said the junior campers
learn how auditions
work and how to conduct
themselves during rehearsals.
Even though some of
the theatrical aspect like
choreography can be difficult
for the younger actors
and actresses, Eason said
she’s glad that so many of
them are starting at a young
age.
Some of those little stars
go on to do theater in the senior
camp and then in high
school. That was the story
for Connor Marron, who
started attending the summer
theater program before second
grade and intends to do
theater next year as a freshman
at Lincoln-Way East.
Marron, who is from Tinley
Park, plays Agwe, the
God of Water, in the show.
His character, along with the
other gods and goddesses,
helps influence the actions
of the other characters in the
story.
“When I started this, I
didn’t know the first thing
about music,” Marron said.
“I was just 7, and since
then, this camp has helped
me more than anything [to]
grow. I started as just the
ensemble, and now I’ve got
one of the main parts. I feel
like this really prepares me
for theater in high school.
“It’s taught me everything
— dancing, acting, singing
[and] how to monitor your
time. It’s just really helped
me overall.”
Marron said he enjoys the
music in the show.
“There’s one rhythm that
kind of carries over through
all the songs,” he said. “It’s
really kind of Caribbean,
and I find that really, really
fun to dance to and sing to.
It’s probably my favorite
rhythm of any of the shows
I’ve done recently.”
Koonce said the adults
involved with the camp are
the ones who make it such a
valuable experience for the
youth participants, many of
whom form lasting friendships.
“We’re really fortunate we
have an amazing production
team,” Koonce said. “Most
of everybody on our production
team are professionals
or have been professionals
Director Marta Koonce (left) rehearses with Grace Cessaretti, who plays the part of Ti
Moune in “Once on This Island Jr.,” on July 5 at St. Mary Catholic School in Mokena.
before, so the kids are getting
a really good education
in a small amount of time.
... I wish I had something
like this when I was a kid,
because some of these kids,
this is their thing, to be able
to have opportunities to hone
that and to be with other kids
that like the same thing is
exciting, I think, for them.”
Surprisingly, not all of the
campers get interested because
of the theater aspect.
Some, like Abigail Brown,
start attending the camps
as a way to continue their
dance experiences.
“I’ve been a dancer since I
was really little, so I just did
it for the dance aspect. And
I was a featured dancer,”
Brown said. “Then, a couple
years ago, I really found that
I like singing, as well. Especially
with musical theater, I
get to both dance and sing at
the same time.”
Brown, who plays Erzulie,
the Goddess of Love, is also
from Tinley Park and will
attend Lincoln-Way East in
the fall. She’s been involved
with the Curtain Call summer
camp since she was an
incoming fourth grader and
intends to continue her theatrical
experiences through
high school theater.
Her character in “Once on
This Island Jr.” plays a role in
helping the main character, Ti
Moune — played by Grace
Cesaretti — fall in love with
Daniel Beauxhomme —
played by Trevor Glatz.
“I am helping her a lot
of the time, because I want
her to fall in love with whoever
she wants to be with,”
Brown said.
Having such a wide range
of ages participating in the
camps is rewarding for both
the youngest and oldest participants
in the camp, and
both Brown and Marron said
they remember being in the
position of the little ones.
“When we were little, it
was fun to look up to the
big kids, because they were
so much better, and they
were just so good at everything
they did,” Marron said.
“That was really fun. Now,
it’s even more fun getting
to be those kids and have all
the little kids come up to you
and tell you how of good job
‘Once on This Island Jr.’
When: 7 p.m. Friday, July
14, and Saturday, July
15; 2 p.m. Saturday, July
15, and Sunday, July 16
Where: Lincoln-Way
Central High School
Auditorium, 1801
Lincoln Highway, New
Lenox
you did. It’s just really fun to
help them learn.”
Marron said it’s fun for
him seeing his younger
brother, Cole, performing in
the junior camp and getting
to say one of the same lines
he did when he performed in
“Dinostars!” — which was
the selected show all those
years ago when he first started
going to theater camp.
“It’s fun to be with them,
because we were there once,
and in a couple years they’re
going to be where we are,”
Brown said. “So, it’s fun
to help them along and see
them get excited about theater.
I get excited about theater,
and I get excited for
them getting excited.”

OPPORTUNITY
Pride of Workmanship - Pride of Ownership at Brookside Meadows
For over 45 years Crana Homes commitment to quality
and customer satisfaction has been summed up as “Pride
of Workmanship - Pride of Ownership.” These words are
the foundation of every one of the hundreds and hundreds
of new homes that Crana Homes has developed into
amazing communities. Now the luxury townhomes of
Brookside Meadows in Tinley Park is where home buyers
once again find unrivaled quality in a Crana home.
But pride in workmanship is only the first part of the
promise. The second part is pride of ownership - the
key to customer satisfaction. Crana Homes meets with
buyers to discuss what they need and want in a new
home. Working closely with customers gives the insight
and understanding needed for the kind of customer
satisfaction that lasts long after a home is finished. This
makes a Crana home not only attractive and comfortable
but also a great investment.
Today, Crana Homes’ legacy culminates in Brookside
Meadows’ newly opened Phase II, a community of awardwinning,
energy-efficient homes that sets the standard for
luxury townhomes. Whether you’re a first time buyer, an
upsizer, downsizer or just looking for a great place to raise
a family early buyers still have plenty of choices available
in the latest and final phase of this quiet, secluded section
in Tinley Park.
The split level Fahan II is a beautiful 3,303 total square
foot home (including a 1,216’ basement). It has three
bedrooms and two-and-half baths with a two-car garage
and a cement driveway. A fourth bedroom is optional. The
large open kitchen has custom maple cabinets and elegant
granite countertops. Maple cabinets are also found in the
batherooms and laundry room. Overlooking the great
room is regal loft. Gorgeous oak is used on floors, doors,
railings and trim throughout. Ceramic floor tile covers
the foyer and the bathrooms - which also feature cultured
marble vanity tops. A full walkout or lookout basement
and a deck is included.
Another award-winning design is the Lennan II, a
comfortable two/three bedroom split level home that
includes most of the features of the Fahan II except the
spacious master suite is located on the upper level and
a cathedral ceiling is available as an option. The Lennan
II totals 3,167 square feet of space (including a 1,049’
basement) and a two-car garage with cement driveway.
With Phase II prices holding in the upper-$200s (including
site), buyers are finding some extra room for options like
a fireplace, coffered ceilings, skylights and a soaker tub
in the master bath.
All homes at Brookside Meadows include cost-efficient,
energy-saving features like a high-efficiency furnace and
Lo-E glass installed throughout. Other ‘green’ features
include an Energy Miser hot water heater, vented soffits,
1.75” insulated entrance doors, energy efficient appliances
and Tuff-R insulated wall sheathing. Underground utilities
and sprinklers are standard and Lake Michigan water is
on tap.
What’s more, Brookside Meadows’ location is a winner!
Tinley Park has been rated as “The Best Place in America
to Raise a Family,” by Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Tinley
lives up to that title with: highly rated schools, dozens
of parks and playgrounds, proximity to stores and malls
plus all the recreation, cultural events and dining of a
neighboring world class city. Major highways and the
Metra commuter line are just minutes away.
See for yourself why ‘Pride of Workmanship, Pride of
Ownership’ are words to live by in every Crana Home.
Choice sites are still available for early buyers. The
Sales Center and fully decorated model homes are open
Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm;
Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:00pm; and Friday
by appointment. From I-80, exit La Grange Road south
for just under two miles to La Porte Road and turn east for
one-half mile. If using a GPS, enter the address: 19839
Mulroy Circle, Tinley Park, IL.
Sizes, specs and prices can change. For details and
information contact a Sales Associate at 708-479-5111
Build and Move into Your New Home from the low $200s
With Lincoln-Way Schools at Prairie Trails in Manhattan
Distinctive Home Builders provides homeowners the
highest quality home on the market
Distinctive Home Builders
continues to add high quality
homes to the Manhattan
landscape at Prairie Trails; its
latest new home community,
located within the highly-regarded
Lincoln-Way School
District. Many families are
happy to call Prairie Trails
home and are pleased that
Distinctive is able to deliver a
new home with zero punch list
items in 90 days. Before closing,
each home undergoes an
industry-leading checklist that
ensures each home measures
up to the firm’s high quality
standards.
“Actually our last average
was 81 working days from excavation
to receiving a home
occupancy permit - without
sacrificing quality,” said Bryan
Nooner, president of Distinctive
Home Builders. “Everyone
at the company works
extremely hard to continually
achieve this delivery goal for
our homeowners. Our three
decades building homes provides
this efficient construction
system. Many of our
skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company for
Recently closed Prairie Trails Arbor Model
over 20 years. We also take
pride on having excellent communicators
throughout our
organization. This translates
into a positive buying and
building experience for our
homeowners and one of the
highest referral rates in the industry
for Distinctive.”
In all, buyers can select
from 13 ranch, split-level and
six two-story single-family
home styles; each offering
three to eight different exterior
elevations. The three- to
four-bedroom homes feature
two to two-and-one-half
baths, two- to three-car garages
and a family room, all in
approximately 1,600 to over
3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included
in most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new
home truly personalized to
suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of
the first floor; custom maple
cabinets; ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen,
baths and foyer; genuine wood
trim and doors; granite countertops
and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails. All home sites at Prairie
Trails can accommodate a
three-car garage; a very important
amenity to the Manhattan
homebuyer, according
to Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails we wanted to provide
the best new home value for
the dollar and we feel with
offering Premium Standard
Features that we do just that.
So why wait? This is truly the
best time to build your dream
home!”
Distinctive offers custom
maple kitchen cabinets featuring
solid wood construction
(no particle board), have solid
wood drawers with dove tail
joints, which is very rare in the
marketplace. “When you buy
a new home from Distinctive,
you truly are receiving custom
made cabinets in every home
we sell no matter what the
price range,” noted Nooner.
Nooner added that all
homes are highly energy efficient.
Every home built will
have upgraded wall and ceiling
insulation values with
Recently closed Prairie Trails Arbor Model
energy efficient windows and
high efficiency furnaces. Before
homeowners move into
their new home, Distinctive
Home Builders conducts a
blower door test that pressurizes
the home to ensure that
each home passes a set of very
stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
Typically a wide variety of
homes are available to tour
that include ranch and twostory
homes.
Distinctive is also offering
a brand new home, the
Stonegrove, a 3,000 square
foot open concept home with a
split foyer entry, formal living
and dining rooms, a two-story
great room, four bedrooms
and an upstairs laundry room.
Distinctive also offers Appbased
technology allowing its
homeowners to be updated
on the progress of their new
home 24 hours a day, seven
days a week at the touch of a
button.
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live featuring a
20-acre lake on site, as well
as direct access to the 22-mile
Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through
many neighboring communities
and links to many other
popular trails. The Manhattan
Metra station is also nearby.
Besides Prairie Trails, Distinctive
Home Builders has
built hundreds of homes
throughout Manhattan in the
Butternut Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well
as thousands in the Will and
south Cook county areas over
the past 30 years.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Nico Muto
Lincoln-Way Central grad Nico Muto was
a running back on the Lincoln-Way Central
football team. He will compete at Illinois
State University next year as a fullback.
How did you get into football?
I always wanted to play football. I just always
watched football on TV, and I wanted
to try it out. I never played as a kid, but I
played in sixth grade and loved it ever since.
Being around 245 pounds at Central,
what was it like playing running back?
It was a great feeling getting the ball and
playing running back. It was kind of cool, because
I was the heaviest person on the field,
and I was in the backfield. I was heavier than
every single offensive linemen on my team.
I was 245 pounds, and my heaviest lineman
was 220. I took every carry I got and tried
to make the most out of it, because I never
carried the ball before high school because
there were weight limits for junior leagues. It
was a great feeling running the ball, running
people over. That’s what I love to do.
Were you annoyed by defenses diving
at your knees to tackle you since they
couldn’t wrap you up?
That’s all they do. I’ve never got singletackled
up high, ever. Every single time I
get tackled, it’s from me not seeing the guy
grabbing my ankles or getting tackled by five
guys. They had to do what they had to do to
take me down. It was rough on me, but it’s
part of the competition.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve
learned from coach Jeremy Cordell?
Football is just not a game, it’s building
character and building you into a man. That’s
the biggest thing I’ve learned from him, and
that’s not just from football but my whole
life. That’s the big picture. Yeah, football,
it’s great. But with him, I learned integrity,
trust, respect. I’ve learned all of that from
Coach Cordell, and that’s going to help me
way beyond my life after football.
What’s the best part about the
football team?
Playing for all your brothers and playing
for each other. I remember our first game of
22nd Century Media File Photo
the [2016-2017] season against Lake Central,
we were down four with 50 seconds left at the
8-yard line, and we had to score. My whole
team went up to me and said “you got to do
this, do this for us.” In my head, I thought I
got to do this for my brothers. That’s a feeling
I never had before. I’m doing this for them; it
wasn’t for me. And when I scored that gamewinning
touchdown, it was a great feeling,
because I did it for all them. It wasn’t a selfish
thing; it was for everyone else.
If you won the lottery, what’s the
first thing you’d buy?
I would honestly probably buy my mom
and dad their dream houses, because I
wouldn’t be there today if it wasn’t for those
two people. I would get something for them
before I would get something for myself.
Do you have a pregame routine?
The day before every game, I would watch
YouTube videos of Marshawn Lynch and
Leonard Fournette, and watch how they run
the ball and try to do what they do. Those are
my favorite players, and they’re really good
at what they do.
If you had one last meal, what would
it include?
The appetizer would be some cheese
sticks; main entree would be a Beggar’s pizza;
and desert would be some cookies.
If you could make up a dream team,
who would be alongside you as your
teammates?
My quarterback would be Cam Newton.
My wide receivers would be Odell Beckham
Jr. and Antonio Brown. My tight end would
be Rob Gronkowski, of course, and my fullback
would be Mike Tolbert.
If there could be a celebrity referee
for a football game, who would you
choose?
Will Ferrell, because he’s one goofy guy.
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart would be the
two refs.
Hope is a good thing for Courteney Barnes
Central basketball
star to develop
further at Holland,
Michigan college
Kyle LaHucik, Editorial Intern
Courteney Barnes and her
father, Jeff, both look back
to the same moment in her
high school basketball career.
For Courteney, it was
the experience she’ll always
remember. For Jeff, it is
the athletic moment during
which he was most proud of
his daughter.
It makes sense that they
picked the same moment.
Basketball runs in the Barnes
family.
Courteney, a recent Lincoln-Way
Central graduate,
grew up watching two of
her three older brothers play
basketball. After attending
their games, she decided it
was her turn to take a shot at
the sport.
Now, about 10 years later,
after averaging 10.1 points
per game, 7.4 rebounds per
game and 1.7 steals per game,
Courteney will be taking her
talents north to Holland,
Michigan, where she will
play for the Hope College
women’s basketball program.
In third grade, she joined
the local co-ed recreation
team. The following year,
she had developed such a
love for the sport that her
parents signed her up for the
Lincoln-Way Xplosion Basketball
Club, a nonprofit that
was started in 2006 to develop
boys and girls’ basketball
skills.
Over the course of the
next few years, Courteney’s
basketball talents exploded
as she continued to play for
the Xplosion and her junior
high school in Mokena. After
a short bump in the road
–– her school had to scratch
the basketball program when
she was in seventh grade because
of money constraints
–– she and her school team
rebounded well and ended
up going to state in eighth
grade. She also played for
the Illinois Defenders Basketball
Club.
Courteney’s father was a
big influence in those early
years. He helped coach her
and her brothers for a few
years and has always been
an avid fan and uplifting
supporter.
“He has always stuck with
me, no matter my decisions.
He will always back me up,”
Courteney said. “He will
always be the one after the
game telling me what I did
wrong and what I did well in
the game.”
Her father said he taught
her “the little things,” such
as rebounding and a “100
percent effort.”
After playing for the
Lincoln-Way East Griffins
her first three years of high
school, Courteney became a
Knight her senior year because
of the redistricting of
Lincoln-Way Community
High School District 210
for the 2016-2017 school
year.
The transition from East
to Central “wasn’t too bad,”
Courteney said.
“I had a few of my good
friends coming with me. We
adapted well.”
In her final high school
season, Courteney had to
face her former team on
a court she used to pound
hundreds of hours of
work into. Though it was
a hard reality being separated
from some of her
best friends, Barnes still
swished the ball with ease
on her former net.
“I liked playing on the
team I was on,” Courteney
Courteney Barnes will be asked to do big things on offense
and defense for Hope College in the fall.
said of the transition. “I
think the atmosphere and
the fans were just a good
atmosphere to play in. They
were always cheering.”
Courteney was a key
player in making the transition
go smoothly and
effectively for the newly
reorganized Central team.
Knights coach Dave Campanile,
who was also Courteney’s
sophomore coach
at East, noted her ability to
adjust.
“She did a great job of
not really being upset by the
transition so much as embracing
it and saying, ‘I can
be the go-to player at Central,’”
Campanile said. “She
welcomed that pressure and
that responsibility.”
To get to that point, Courteney
had to improve her
skills as not only a leader,
but also as a player.
“Her progress overall was
pretty substantial. When she
was a sophomore she was
kind of tall and lanky and
didn’t have good control
over her body,” Campanile
explained. “The progress has
been more of her developing
better body control and using
her length offensively
and defensively and maturing
physically and getting
her body more organized.
“Mentally and emotionally,
[she became] one of the
more elite players we had,”
Campanile added.
Courteney’s versatility
and overall growth this season
is what Campanile will
remember the most about
his go-to player.
Adapting to the role of
being that go-to player
is something Courteney
learned from her former
teammate, Claire McMahon,
who graduated a year
before her.
“She was a huge mentor
for me throughout my
years,” Courteney said.
Her sophomore year,
Courteney received an
uplifting text from an unknown
number. It ended up
being McMahon.
“She said, ‘Keep up the
good work at practice.
You’ll get good looks on
varsity,’” Courteney recalled.
“She was such a
good player, and it was
good to look up to her.”
McMahon also painted a
picture for Barnes in terms
of what it’s like to aspire to
play basketball in college
and to go through the recruiting
process. Campanile
believes McMahon is the
one who, by way of teaching
by example, opened
Courteney Barnes, who will be playing college ball at Hope
College, brings the ball up the floor during her senior
season at Lincoln-Way Central. 22nd Century media File
Courteney’s eyes to truly
realizing the possibility of
continuing the sport beyond
high school.
“She saw the whole process,
and that excited her and
made her want to be a college
player,” Campanile said.
With a “number of offers
from a number of different
places,” Campanile said,
Courteney had a tough decision
to make. But that was
settled after she sent a game
film to the Hope College
coach, which prompted him
to get her and her father on
campus for a visit.
“My dad texted my mom
and was like, ‘This is where
she’s gonna be,’” Courteney
said of her visit.
The atmosphere felt right
for Courteney. And for her father,
the Hope women’s basketball
coach also stood out.
“He is a genuine person
[and] definitely has a care
for the players, and I could
tell that right away,” Jeff
Barnes said.
As Courteney moves on
to the next stage in her athletic
and academic careers,
she has left her mark on the
Knights and can look back
on the teammates she’s impacted.
Just as McMahon
mentored Courteney, Courteney
mentored a teammate
two years her junior, Abi
Baumgartner, who Campanile
says has been influenced
by Courteney to look into
playing college ball.
While at Hope College,
Courteney is to study elementary
education with possible
minors in Spanish and
special education. And, just
as any good athlete would,
Courteney has thought out
her decision and has a futuristic
outlook on the choice.
“I always thought I would
want to be a teacher. Once
I got to [Hope College], I
talked to a professor and everything,”
Courteney said.
“What they said was what I
wanted to do.
“Once I have summers
off, I can coach,” Courteney
added. “Either my children’s
teams or a club team.”
Now that Courteney has
passed along her wisdom
and insight to her Knights
teammates, she will take
a fast break — hopefully
a quick, but fulfilling last
summer before college —
and pass the ball to her Flying
Dutchmen teammates,
players whom she will once
again look up to.

projections
1. Logan Anderson
The Summit Hill
Junior High graduate
was instrumental
in Providence’s win
against Andrew. He
batted twice in the
fourth inning, starting
with a leadoff single
and driving in a pair
of runs in the second
at-bat.
2. Zack Landy
Along with Anderson
and two other Providence
hitters, Landy
finished the game
with a pair of RBI. His
final run driven home
helped the Celtics finish
off Andrew, giving
Provi their 11th of 12
runs on a sacrifice fly
in the sixth.
3. The Jakes
Jake Walsh and Jake
Mucha were the
other two Providence
batters to drive in a
pair of runs during
the Thursday, July 6
game in Tinley Park.
Runs looked like they
would be at a premium – until
they were not.
Providence Catholic beat
Andrew in a high-scoring,
12-8 affair, as a pitching duel
turned into a series of offensive
outbursts on Thursday,
July 6, in Tinley Park. The
Celtics’ nine-run fourth inning
proved to be the difference.
Frankfort Square resident
Logan Anderson, a seniorto-be,
was one of four Celtics
who drove in two runs.
Zack Landy, Jake Walsh and
Jake Mucha also drove in
two runs apiece.
“I’m always working on
my offense,” Anderson said.
“Before two strikes, I try
to hit a ball as far as I can.
Then, really, just take the
ball where it’s pitched, try
not to pull a ball that I should
be hitting to the right side.”
Anderson’s focus has also
been on improving his defense,
although he was the
designated hitter against Andrew.
He is expecting to start
full-time at third base next
spring, after he played third
base and rotated between
first base and catcher last
year because of injuries.
“It’s just a calmness,” Anderson
said. “Last year, I was
iffy at third base to start the
year. Then, I got in a groove
as I started listening to my
coaches. Now, there’s no
nerves, because I’ve been in
the footsteps. I’m just focusing
on my fielding to make
sure I get my feet in the right
position to make the play.”
Andrew’s Zach Weert
and Kevin Bushnell led the
Thunderbolts with two hits
each. Weert went 2-for-4
with a double, two runs and
one RBI. Bushnell went
2-for-4 with one run scored.
Bushnell, a senior-to-be,
is expected to be a big part of
Andrew’s plan for success in
the coming spring. He is expected
to replace power hitter
Joe Oswald at first base
after spending time as the
designated hitter last year.
“Joe taught me a lot
throughout last year,” Bushnell
said. “He’s a great leader.
That’s going to be hard to replace
that. I know I have to be
a leader, and my team needs
me out there. He’s taught me
a lot with my swing. We went
out and hit a lot. He’s been a
great teacher.”
Bushnell said he tries to
take 100 swings every day.
He also has been working on
his defense by taking ground
balls and fly balls. Andrew
coach Dave DeHaan said
likes the development he has
seen from Bushnell during
the summer.
“He’s been a solid hitter,”
DeHaan said. “He’s
Mokena native and Providence Catholic baseball player Jack Flynders follows through
after making contact during a game against Andrew Thursday, July 6, in Tinley Park.
Julie McMann/22nd Century Media
worked on his defense. He
had some big hits in the
spring, and we’re excited to
have him back. We need him
to be consistent at the plate
and drive the ball. We want
power. That’s what we got
from Joe [Oswald] last year.
We’re looking for someone
to drive guys in.”
While the offense stole
the show, pitching owned
the early innings. Andrew
scored three runs, building
a 3-0 lead through three innings,
although only one run
was earned. Thunderbolts
pitchers Max Smyth and
Ryan McGuire allowed only
two of Providence’s first 10
batters to reach base, one on
a hit batsman and one on a
walk that was immediately
erased with a pickoff.
Providence sent 12 batters
to the plate in the fourth, starting
with Anderson’s leadoff
single. Walsh drove in two
runs on a double, Ben Vitas
doubled home a run, Mucha
had a two-run single, and Tyler
Struck had an RBI single.
Anderson drove in two runs
with an opposite-field double
in his second at-bat of
the inning, and he scored on
Landy’s RBI single.
Andrew drew a basesloaded
walk in the fourth
and another in the fifth to
pull within 9-5.
Providence went up 12-5
in the sixth inning when Jake
Hesselmann had a pinch-hit
RBI single, Landy had an
RBI sacrifice fly, and Brennan
Geers scored on an error.
In the seventh inning, Andrew
loaded the bases for
the third time in four innings
but managed only three runs.
Weert had an RBI double
and scored on a fielder’s
choice, and Nolan Fazel
drove in one run on a single
to end the scoring at 12-8.
“You take away those two
bad innings, and we’re right
there,” DeHaan said. “Our
kids battled again and again.
I’m proud of the kids who
came out to play and competed.”
Listen Up
“Before two strikes, I try to hit a ball as far as
I can. Then, really, [I] just take the ball where
it’s pitched, try not to pull a ball that I should be
hitting to the right side.”
