Deutz, Amour de Deutz – île Maurice,
République de Maurice
Avec cette cuvée particulière au nom si
romantique, Amour de Deutz, la
discrète maison d’Aÿ réussit souvent
un miracle. Le millésime 2006 porte
l’élégance en lui. Les chardonnays
expriment la mirabelle et des notes de
fleurs blanches.
susurre à l'oreille qu'ici rien n'a jamais changé depuis Napoléon III.
“Classic chic As soon as you enter the house of Deutz, a sculpted
cupid whispers in your ear that nothing has changed here since
Napoleon III. Everything is perfect, from the blue mosaic floor in the
entrance hall to the blood-red wall coverings in the Empire lounge.
They say people are inspired by the places they work in. Fabrice
Rosset, head of the house in Aÿ since 1996, is convinced: "At Deutz the
place has a spirit that guides our approach to winemakmg, one based
on discrétion and élégance.“ An iconic brand among connoisseurs,
Deutz produces wines dominated by Pinot Noir that are classical
without being heavy and invariably well made. Its Brut Classic is
among the best nonvintage champagnes. As for the very chalky Amour
de Deutz — also available as a rosé—it is a fine expression of
Chardonnay.”
Amour de Deutz Rosé 2007
Amour de Deutz 2008
95 95
Crisp red fruit dominates this beautifully crafted wine.
Poised and stylish, it exudes sophistication with its
bright red currant fruit and delicious acidity. A lively
mousse enhances its crisp texture and fine aftertaste.
Drink from 2018.
This wine is rich and surprisingly full-bodied. It comes
from a great Champagne vintage, giving it both
intensity and an acidity built for longterm aging. This
half-bottle version is filling out, showing almond
flavors yet retaining its citrus edge. Drink from 2019.
Amour de Deutz Rosé 2006
95 With its beautiful rose color and delicate flavors, this
continues the elegant tradition of Amour de Deutz. It's
one of the Champagne house's three prestige cuvées
and the most refined. This crisp wine, with its soft
acidity, ripe strawberry fruits and tang of citrus is ready
to drink, although it will age in bottle for many years.
94
94
Amour de Deutz Rosé 2008
The half-bottle format has sped up the maturing of this
wine. It rides a fine line between crisp red fruit and
fuller, toastier character. With great acidity, layers of
zingy citrus and a soft texture, it's delicate and ready to
drink.
William Deutz 2008
A high proportion of Pinot Noir gives this Deutz prestige
cuvée richness as well as a strong green fruit character.
Citrus, green apples and intense acidity underpin this
finely understated wine. Drink from 2018.
William Deutz 2006
The second of two prestige cuvées from Deutz, this
shows its high proportion of Pinot Noir with its fullbodied
nature. Already mature, it has broadened into a
richly complex, toasty, spicy wine. With full-throttle
acidity that gives it a taut edge, it's impressive and
ready to drink.
Amour de Deutz 2006
Still very crisp and fruity with only a hint of maturity,
this is a bright, apple- and citrus- driven wine. Light and
stylish, it gets its generous minerality from the
Chardonnay in the blend. While it's great now, it will be
even better from 2018.
Deutz Brut Millésimé 2010
This wine, though still young, reveals much about the
Deutz style as well as the vintage. It strikes a balance
between softness and crispness that fits the ethos of
the house. At the same time, it's an attractive mediumterm
bottling, in line with what many producers
achieved in 2010. It should be kept until 2019.
95
94
94
93
Amour de Deutz 2007
This wine, now mature, shows a fine toast and yeast
character. That still leaves room for crisp apple fruit and
bright acidity, exuding a stylish elegance. It's poised
with delicious balance. Drink now.
Deutz Brut Rosé 2012
Deutz Brut Rosé 2010
92 This most recent release of vintage rosé from Deutz This pale rosé is showing its maturity at seven years of 92
boasts fine acidity and crisp young fruit, marking it as a
wine to age. Bright and lively with a sophisticated edge
of acidity and red currant fruit, it should be cellared until
2019.
Deutz Blanc de Blancs 2010
This wine is still young, reveling in its bright fruit and
mineral texture. Drawn from Côte des Blancs vineyards,
it's tight, tense and loaded with citrus fruit. With its
finely crisp aftertaste, it's delicious now for its fruit but
will also be great from 2020, once its toasty character
develops more fully.
age, its fruitiness transforming into extra richness,
with touches of toast. It's a very fine wine, ripe and
ready to drink.
93
Deutz Brut Classic
Deutz Brut Rosé
90 89
This nonvintage classic is on point with its soft, ripe This fine, perfumed wine is soft and stylish—a
style. It has just enough maturity to fill out the fruit,
with hints of almond and toast. On the palate, attractive
bright citrus and green apple flavors dominate.
hallmark of the nonvintage Champagnes from this
producer. It has plenty of red berry flavors and
balanced acidity. Drink now.
annate. Spesso e volentieri bottiglie di dégorgement
recente, sono state proposte ovviamente in quantità
maison in qualità e quantità.

certamente efficace.
In
quantità limitata, ovviamente, ma prezzo molto interessante.
60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Meunier
persistenza. Una vera sorpresa. O forse no?
Voto: 96/100
Deutz is still setting a cracking pace. The main press
house in Aÿ was razed in 2010 and two new layers of
cellars dug underneath. A completely new press house
was erected just in time for vintage 2011, with new
four-and-eight-tonne presses, a new bottling line and
increased cellar capacity from 8 million to 11,5 million
bottles, and Deutz is now bottling its annual
production target of 2,5 million bottles and it has
secured the grape supply to sustain it.
Owned by Louis Roederer, the house lays claims to just
42 of the total 200 hectares from which it sources fruit,
all in grand and premier cru villages in the Marne,
Chardonnay and pinot noir are the focus for Deutz,
with meunier comprising just 5% of its fruit. Most of
the supply increase in recent years has come from
purchased fruit. « We are looking for vineyards to buy,
but the availability of good vineyards is not high »
explains president Fabrice Rosset, the powerhouse
behing Deutz for almost 20 years. To reward quality
growers are paid based not only on the standard of
their terroir, but the quality of grapes delivered.
Growers are hearing of Deutz’s reputation and calling
the company to offer their grapes. « This is the highest
compliment we could be paid ! » exclaims Rosset.
Can the house continue to maintain quality while
following such a steep trajectory of growth ? « It is
crucial that we maintain the same quality of supplies »
chef de cave Michel Davesne emphasizes. The
intention is to maintain the same suppliers, continuing
to source from within 35 kilometres of Aÿ and using
only the first pressings. He is confident the investments
in the new winery and cellars will only aid the pursuit
of quality.
Assuming the house can maintain reliable supply
channels, Deutz will be well equipped to continue to
achieve its target. Recently modernised
disgorgement and warehousing facilities are already
in operation, and 8 million bottles wait in
anticipation in three kilometres of cellars extending
into the hill, up to 65 metres deep beneath the
vineyard behind Aÿ.
With sustainable agriculture a priority, Deutz is
trialling organics and even biodynamics in the plot
immediately above the winery. Chemical pesticides
have been abandoned, and grasses cultivated in the
mid-rows of some plots to avoid the use of herbicids
and reduce yields to slightly below the average.
Even in its young vins clairs, the clean, crisp, fresh,
pristine focus of the house is abundantly clear.
Deutz preserves the purity of its fruit through
fermentation plot by plot in 350 stainless steel tanks
(no barrels), temperature controlled to 16-17°C.
Malolactic fermentation is encouraged
systematically. Non-vintage rested in the cellar for a
further six months post-disgorgement. Dosages of
around 9g/L are well balanced to the graceful style
of the house.
« The key to Deutz is elegance . » expounds Rosset,
« The Deutz style is made on refinement and
harmony – this is the quintessence of champagne. »
Then he checks himself and grins warmly « I am
exagerating ! »
But he’s right. In its classic, eloquently labelled
bottles, Deutz has upheld its air of consistently
refreshing pure lemon sunshine.
Amour de Deutz rosé 2006
A new king has ascended in the great kingdom of Deutz rosé, a brand new release, replacing William Deutz Rosé with an
intentionally more elegant style and inadvertently offering a profound insight into the motivation of this house and its
president. A few weeks before I visited in late 2014, Fabrice Rosset made the tough and costly decision never to release the
entire 14,768 bottle production of amour de Deutz rosé 2005. He poured me an exclusive tasting of that never-to-be-released
cuvée (94 points). Goodness, many reputable houses would release (and have) lesser prestige cuvées. I have long
respected Deutz, and at that moment it won an all-new respect.
It takes all the wizardry and resources of Deutz to create a new rosé of such thrilling, towering magnificence. It is at once
ethereal in its elegance, precise in its definition and fairy light on its feet, yet there is grand presence and depth of fruit power
driving it long and full breathtakingly graceful elegance elevates it to another spiritual plane. Exquisite purity of red cherries,
wild strawberries, rose hip, pink pepper and pomegranate define an impeccably crafted shape of exuberant yet immaculate
refinement, and mesmerizing persistence. A triumph, and an instant addition to Champagne's top rosé tier - and who else
can claim that with a new cuvée ?
William Deutz 2002
97
96
There is both a depth and a breadth to 2002, encapsulated in an incredible display of the freshness of Deutz, amplified by the intensity if
pinot noir, elevated and energized by ultra-fine, chalk-rich minerality and set resolutely in a mature mould. This is a wine of contrasts and
contradictions, but, profoundly, it maintains seamless persistence and breathtaking lightness. Youthful endurance is declared in vibrant
lemon zest and young summer-fruit freshness, while the grand maturity of a dozen years in the cellar is articulated quietly in a depth of
brioche, gingernut biscuits, vanilla nougat, toast and honey. Prominent, silky chalk structure is the highlight of a mesmerizing finish. It's
ready to drink now, and anytime in the next decade.
Deutz Brut Millésimé 2008
Only in the great 2008 vintage can supermodel curves, ballerina daintiness, gymnastic muscle and Olympian energy all
coexist in one desperately precise body. Fairy-footed grace of rose petal and lemon blossom fragrance find a breathtaking
tension with exceptional fruit depth, epic persistence and breathtakingly chalk-fine, frothing salt minerality. Another thrilling
performance from the most enduring vintage since 1996.
Deutz Blanc de Blancs 2008
96
The sublime 2008 season plays precisely to Deutz's brief of precision and minrality. Embedded deeply in the two most confident
chardonnay grand crus, this is a cuvée that encapsulates the ultra-elegance and coiled-up power and intensity that define this vintage. Its
chalk minerality is breathtaking, surging and frothing with the seaspray of its terroirs. Freshness shines as pure and stark as high-noon
daylight in lemon, crunchy pear and yellow mirabelle plum, with all the accumulated knowledge of seven years of age proclaimed in fresh
almonds, brioche and nougat. It's at once energetic and tense, yet intricately balanced and gentle, concluding in a crescendo of
astonishing persistence. Ready to go now, it will deepen with unrelenting resolve for decades.
96
Deutz Brut Rosé Millésimé 2009
I was completely besotted when Deutz's ultra-sensual 2008 Rosé walked onto the scene, and I never expected to fall for the
2009 in quite the same way but, gosh it's silky, long-legged and downright gorgeous. This is grace in a salmon-crimson silk
ballgown; a ravishing celebration of pinot noir in all its red cherry and strawberry succulence, trailing a smooth acid train and
friendly chalk mineral texture. There's a seamlessness to this vintage that beckons you to dance all night, albeit without the
fast moves and stiletto tension of 2008;
95
Deutz Brut Millésimé 2007
A very impressive vintage, with a pinot noir lead reflected in a full straw hue and magnificent depth of enticing yellow mirabelle plums
and rich figs. Its maturity is declared in a panoply of burnt butter, toast, honey, brioche, butterscotch and mixed spice, drawn out
effortlessly by lively acidity, a creamy bead and fine chalk mineral structure.
95
Deutz Blanc de Blancs 2007
One of the first and most memorable 2007s that I ever tasted, from the day of its release this has been a wine of delicacy juxtaposed with
power. Two years on, its focus and tension are unwavering, sustained by excellent, fine chalk mineral definition. Notes of struck-flint
reduction waft over a precise palate of white pepper, crisp pear, crunchy golden delicious apple and subtle; simmering mixed spice.
94
Deutz Brut Classic
Brut Classic is the barometer of Deutz, representing 80% of the volume of the house, and the house gives it first priority. But
if any cracks develop in the wake of increasing production, they will surely appear here, and certainly in a season as shaky
as 2010. To the contrary, quite remarkably, this is as good as I have seen this refreshing apéritif. It presents an angaging
contrast between the racy tension of lemon and grapefruit, the presence and volume of red apple, pear and white peach, and
the elegant complexity of bottle age nuances of nougat, anise, brioche and mixed spice. the vivacity and subtlety that define
the signature of Deutz are upheld within a style of cream bread, well-integrated dosage and expressive, long-lingering chalk
mineral texture.
Deutz Brut Rosé
94
The pure, fresh style of Deutz is perfectly suited to elegant and restrained rosé, and the house is unusual in producing the style at three
different levels. Fabrice Rosset admits the challenge is to maintain a consistent style every year. "In vintages like 2001 and 2011, the
climatic conditions made it a real challenge to uphold the consistency of our non-vintage wines." It leaves its stamp here in a dry, dusty
mouthfeel and notes of temarillo. nonetheless, some subtle red cherry, pomegranate and pink pepper do manage to poke through amidst
a creamy bead, good acid line, well-integrated dosage and lingering persistence. The 2010 base vintage is much more representative of a
house accomplished in crafting pristine rosé right from its entry cuvée. It's fine and elegant, with pristine red cherryand rose petal lift,
excellent integration of finely structured acidity, subtle dosage and refined, soft chalk mineral structure.
94
94
93
Deutz Brut Millésimé 2006
Current for at least four years now, this vintage is every bit as engaging as it was on day one. Refined and effortless, it
sustains an excellent core of primary citrus zest, slowly evolving into soft peach, toast and honey, drawn out through a long,
even finish.
William Deutz 1999
One of the rare cuvées to appear in all three editions of The Champagne Guide to date, and here it is for one final showing. It peaked two
years ago, and is now coming towards the end of its prime, complex, full and long with an impressive core of peach fruit and citrus zest
becoming toasty, honeyed, spicy and buttery. Still great, but eclipsed in every way by the 2002.
Amour de Deutz 2005
I admire Fabrice Rosset for many reasons, not least his brutal honesty : "2005 is not my cup of tea, a vintage characterised
by a vegetal character." This cuvée is a triumph of this difficult season and it's been evolving into itself confidently since its
release. True to the style of the house, there is a zesty vibrancy; an energetic freshness and an effortless grace here that's
rarely expressed by this vintage. Crunchy pear, apple and grapefruit are evolving into nougat, vanilla custard, toast and
spice. It concludes in a dry, brittle, almond skin-like phenolic texture, characteristic of 2005, yet diminishing with time postdisgorgement,
thanks to a creamy body, expressive chalk mineral texture, substance, complexity and succulence that go
some way towards softening and elongating the finish.
Historiquement installée a Aÿ, Deutz a construit
Transparenz an diesem Wein.
transparent in diesem Wein.
Delikatesse gebraten.
Champagne Deutz, William Deutz 2006
Offering more delicate, elegant and understated aromas, this 2007 melds red-berry fruits seamlessly with
nectarines, peaches and roses. The palate's fine, elegant and beautifully balanced. There's really superb length
and purity. Drink now.
Amour de Deutz Rosé 2008
A floral, pretty-smelling Champagne that has aromas of honey-drizzled rose petals, strawberries and
raspberries. The palate's super fine, building smooth and creamy with bright, young-strawberry-fruit flavors
and cherries to close. Elegant and precise. Drink now.
93
93
William Deutz 2008
A smoothly honed, precise and seductively textural Champagne that has impressive lemon, grapefruit and
peach character, all combined with lightly toasty hazelnuts and a smooth, creamy sorbet-like texture. There's
neat balance, freshness and vivacity here. Drink now through to 2022.
Deutz Brut Rosé 2010
More savory berry-nougat and strawberry-cream aromas, some attractive spicy complexity and toasted
almonds to boot. The palate's smooth, creamy and shows berry-sorbet flavors that deliver a lithe and crunchy
core. There's smoothness to close but also bright acidity. Drink now.
93
92
Amour de Deutz 2008
Really fresh and lively showing more peach and lemon curd but with a touch of lime sorbet, too. There's fresh
toasty hazelnut complexity wrapped in a subtle layer on the palate, which all concludes in a bright pastry
finish. Pretty Champagne. Drink now and through to 2020.
Amour de Deutz 2006
Showing much better than in my 2015 tasting, this has a bright and clean nose with plenty of lemons and
peaches. The autolysis makes a fine showing, too. The palate's deeply flavored and has a mix of nectarine and
lemon flavors; it's super clean, elegant and decently powerful to boot. Drink now.
92
92
Amour de Deutz Rosé 2006
This has some impressive complexity and layering to it, smelling of bright cherry fruits and pink-grapefruit
citrus. There's also fresh pastry combined with hints of grilled cashew nuts. The palate has a nicely cut, crisp
and even shape – in part thanks to the acidity, which is fine and runs deep. The flavors follow the same berrycitrus
mix seen on the nose. Drink now.
Attractive complexity and deeply rich concentrated fruits here. This has ripe-peach, lemon and grapefruit
complexity. It's all pure and even with grapefruit to close. Drink now.
Deutz Blanc de Blancs 2010
A complex vintage Champagne that has really fresh lime and lemon-citrus-fruit aromas and flavors fused with
honey and toasted almond notes. Great balance and depth. The creamy texture is reminiscent of sorbet and
closes with a lovely grapefruit finish. Drink now.
92
Super attractive rose florals and freshly cut strawberry fruits on the nose. This comes across as super vibrant,
youthful and fresh on the palate too with yet more strawberries, a little twist of spice and a smooth, fleshy,
supple finish. Drink now.
Deutz Brut Rosé
Showcasing a wealth of sweet-smelling strawberry fruit aromas and rose perfumes, this has an attractive,
direct style to it. The palate's fleshy and directly flavored with red berry fruits, handy depth and drive and a
fresh cherry finish. Drink this really expressive Champagne now!
Deutz Brut Millésimé 2010
A bright and floral citrus nose with lemon-curd and peach-custard aromas. There are also subtle pastry and
grilled almonds in the background, and this is really upbeat. The palate has a mix of grapefruit and nectarine
flavors, meanwhile, as well as vibrant acid drive. Drink now whilst it's crunchy and fresh.
Deutz Brut Classic
An assertive citrus and peach-stone fruit style that has plenty of bread-dough and yeasty influence on the
nose and palate. The acidity is piercing, and some red fruit flavors and smooth tannins show themselves to
close things out. Drink now.
FOIRE AUX VINS : LE JEU DES 7 FAMILLES
Notre parcours fléché avec Bettane&Desseauve
Champagne, William Deutz, blanc 2006
assoupie. « C’était une Belle
au bois dormant », qu’il a
fallu réveiller en douceur –
« avec beaucoup de respect
pour tout ce qui a précédé et
en prenant en compte son
ADN » insiste Fabrice Rosset.
Malgré vingt ans d’une
présence très féconde, il a la
modestie de celui qui n’est
que de passage « sur scène ».
« La maison existe depuis
1838. Je suis un intermittent
du spectacle qui aura posé sa
pierre à l’édifice. ». Ou plutôt
de solides fondations, car
Deutz jouit aujourd’hui d’une
belle image, entre classicisme
et élégance, avec une gamme
très cohérente qui puise
principalement dans les
grands terroirs situés dans un
rayon de 30km autour d’Aÿ.
Séduction et élégance
Le style Deutz, c’est avant
tout la quête « de séduction
et d’élégance », mais en
aucun cas de « frivolité », car
« le champagne est un vin à
part entière et exigeant. ».
Le credo de la maison, c’est
le soin à porter aux
approvisionnements, « 75%
dans les grands et premiers
crus et le recours exclusif
aux vins de cuvée », et aussi
l’absence de bois dans la
vinification ou l’élevage, le
choix des fermentations
malolactiques systématiques
et un long vieillissement sur
lattes. Tous les vins de la
gamme, soit neuf cuvées,
sont construit autour de
cette élégance qui s’incarne
dans la finesse des textures,
la pureté de fruit et la
vinosité toujours aérienne
des vins. Le brut de la
maison (Classic) en est une
belle illustration, mais « on
insiste pour conserver cette
harmonie, y compris dans les
cuvées plus puissantes ». La
cuvée William Deutz, avec sa
puissance contenue, sa
complexité, sa profondeur et
son dynamisme lui donne
raison.
117

menthol. Le plaisir s’amplifie en
bouche, où l’on trouve de
l’opulence et un côté gourmand,
souligné par des notes de miel, de
compote de pêches de vigne, de
quetsche. Un millésime de grande
tenue, qui brille par sa complexité
et sa finesse.
and crystalline in its purity,
the 2008 offers exceptional
precision and fabulous
overall balance. The pure
The 2008 Brut William Deutz
intense, with plenty of warm,
toasty notes that lend richness
to the Chardonnay. Orange
peel, candied apricot, pastry
expressive, layered Champagne
rich, tropically-leaning style
with considerable Pinot Noir
William Deutz 2006
Powerful, bright and tightly-wound, the 2006 Brut William Deutz is
built on a core of serious energy. White flowers, lemon oil, pears,
smoke, slate, lime and mint all give the 2006 notable tension and
brightness. This is another wine that will require patience. Today, the
2006 is salivating and decidedly taut. The future looks bright.
Amour de Deutz 2006
94
The 2006 Amour de Deutz is fabulous, and also shows what the house
can do in a strong vintage. A rich, powerful Blanc de Blancs, the 2006
boasts notable texture and breadth. Even with all of its intensity, the
2006 preserves considerable freshness. Brioche, spice and yellow
stone fruit nuances meld into the resonant, creamy finish. Readers will
have to give the 2006 at least a year or two in bottle, possibly more, as
it is tightly wound and energetic to the core. Still, there is a lot to like
in the wine's crisp, citrus-inflected notes and vibrant personality. The
blend is 53% Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, 39% Avize and 8% Villers Marmery.
Amour de deutz Rosé 2006
94
93
The 2006 Amour de Deutz Rosé replaces the William Deutz Rosé in the
house's range. Powerful and broad from the outset, the pale-colored
2006 boasts serious intensity, with a compelling interplay of fruit and
structure. Cranberry, rose petal and mint are some of the notes that
gradually emerge from this sinewy structured Champagne. Expressive
chalky notes support the brisk, intensely saline finish. The 2006 is going
to be a gorgeous Champagne to follow for the better part of the next
decade or longer. The blend is 55% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Verzenay and
Bouzy) and 45% Chardonnay (from Avize, Chouilly and Villers-
Marmery.)
Cuvée William Deutz 2002
Another open-knit, radiant wine, the 2002 Cuvée William Deutz is
quite expressive today. Honey, almonds, dried pears, chamomile,
mint and crushed flowers blossom effortlessly. There is plenty of
vintage 2002 generosity, especially on the finish, where the wine
offers notable richness, creaminess and unctuosity. Already a bit
forward, with plenty of vintage's exoticism, the 2002 is probably best
enjoyed over the next handful of years. The 2002 is 62% Pinot Noir
(from Aÿ, Mareuil-sur Aÿ, Bouzy, Louvois and Ambonnay), 27%
Chardonnay (mostly from Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) and 11%
Pinot Meunier (from Peirry and Chatillon-sur-Marne).
Rosé 2009
93
Deutz's 2009 Rosé is one of the highlights in this tasting. Silky and
textured on the palate, the 2009 shows lovely focus, with plenty of bright
red berry and stone fruit character. Mint and spice nuances are woven
throughout, adding to the wine's overall complexity. The radiance of the
vintage comes through nicely in this racy, super-expressive Rosé. Here,
too, the wine's balance is impeccable. A Rosé of assemblage, the 2009 is
80% Pinot Noir (including 8% still Pinot) and 20% Chardonnay, from Aÿ,
Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Bouzy and Verzenay.
Brut Millesime 2008
92
The 2008 Brut Millesime offers considerable richness from the
predominance of Pinot in the blend along with the freshness of the
vintage. Dried flowers, red stone fruit, cinnamon, chamomile, pear and
slate are all highly expressive in the glass. The 2008 is generous and
expansive on the palate, with considerable power and plenty of energy in
reserve. The blend is 63% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot
Meunier.
92
Brut Blanc de blancs 2008
The 2008 Blanc de Blancs is attractive, but also a bit unusual in that it is
quite open-knit considering the vintage and fruit sources predominantly in
Avize and Mesnil. Scents of brioche, spice, vanilla and white orchard fruit
all blossom in the glass. The 2008 is rich on the palate, yet also conveys an
impression of translucent weightlessness. The blend is 51% Avize and 41%
Mesnil, with touches of fruit from Villers Marmery, Cramant and Vertus.
Amour de Deutz 2005
91
White truffle, herbs, orange blossom and spices are some of the notes that
take shape in the 2005 Amour de Deutz. There is good nuance in the glass,
but the 2005 is also a bit forward, with slight hints of greenness and
oxidation, which along with its mid-weight structure, suggest it is best
enjoyed sooner rather than later. I also miss some of the energy that is
present in the very best years. The 2005 is 100% Chardonnay, 60% Avize,
35% Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and 5% Villers-Marmery.
