AWARDS & RECOGNITION
AWARDS & RECOGNITION
FAIRMONT - THE TOP 20 COMMUNITY IN THE NATION
The Fairmont area promotes, instills
and supports the Top 20 concepts
originally designed and implemented
in St. Paul, Minnesota. Teachings are
based on the Pareto principle which
proposes that roughly 80% of the effects
come from 20% of the causes.
In most situations where there is a
group doing an activity, some will just
naturally succeed more than others.
Top 20 awakens in people their inside
power (how they think and see) and
develops their outside power (how
and what they communicate in order
to create more satisfying results and
a more enjoyable journey through
life. It helps people of all ages be
more aware of choices they have
everyday to make a positive difference
in their relationships and experiences.
In the 20 years since initial application,
the Top 20 TLC (Thinking,
Learning, Communicating) curriculum
has evolved nationwide. In 2013,
Fairmont made a commitment to promote
Top 20 throughout the entire region,
engaging the educational
institutions, businesses, government
and the general populous. Top 20
Thinking to Create a Healthy Workplace
and Community points to remember
are: 1) Live Above the Line;
2) Help Other Succeed; 3) Communicate
“You Matter”; 4) Honor the Absent;
5) See the Problem; Own the
Problem. If you would like to know
MARTIN COUNTY NAMED BLANDIN BROADBAND COMMUNITY
The program is an intensive, twoyear
partnership between Blandin
Foundation and selected rural Minnesota
communities that provide
planning, technical and financial support
to communities that demonstrate
the determination to bring the benefits
of a broadband-enabled economy
to their communities. Several successful
projects have been launched.
Fairmont Area Calendar (fairmontareacalendar.com)
hosted at various locations throughout
the county, provides computer,
tablet and cell phone basics to the
QUALITY OF LIFE AVAILABLE IN
MARTIN COUNTY
An effort is underway to entice
and assist professionals
to relocate to Martin
County, thanks to a grant
through Southern Minnesota
Initiative Foundation.
The “One Big Thing
Grant” opportunity was introduced
in the Spring of
2015. Stressing the importance
of a collaborative and
regional project, SMIF
awarded $32,950 to public
and private sector leaders
who make up the “Brain
Gain” Committee. The
group’s title is indicative of
the wealth of knowledge
and community enrichment
that those who have left
rural areas to obtain higher
education bring when they
choose to move into smaller
communities in search of a
simpler life, safety, affordable
housing, outdoor
recreation and quality
one of our many popular festivals, where you can get
a true taste of life in Martin County.
History buffs can delve a little deeper into the local
culture by visiting various sites listed on the Minnesota
uprisings, military conquests and marveling at magnificent
architecture – don’t forget to make time for
some antique browsing along the way. Those looking
to kick back and let time pass them by, should head
to one of the 49 lakes scattered across the county
for a relaxing day of
fishing, swimming, canoeing
or boating. Camping facilities
at several of these lakes help to
complete the perfect day of
tranquility. Known as the
‘City of Lakes’, Fairmont is home to
five stunning bodies of water – George Lake, Lake
Sisseton, Budd Lake, Hall Lake, and Amber Lake –
four of which are interconnected and all offering fishing
and boating opportunities. If a round of golf is
more your style, we’ve got two 18-hole courses in
Fairmont, and a third nine-hole facility in Sherburn.
Or how about a round of disc golf? Fairmont’s Cedar
Creek Park has not one, but two 18-hole courses for
devotees of this increasingly popular pastime. As the
colder weather settles in, prepare to switch gears
groomed snowmobile trails. The lush terrain of the
sunshine-soaked summer months give way to a winter
The Martin County
Courthouse
It was thanks to the rolling hills surrounding our
picturesque lake setting that Fairmont was named
– it was originally called Fair Mount. Since the establishment
of a fort here in 1826, Fairmont has been
steeped in an intriguing history. For nearly 200 years,
our community has weathered Indian uprisings, Civil
War unrest, 19th century agricultural challenges, and
the industrial development of the early 1900s. But
that rich tapestry of pioneering settlers, battlefield
conflicts, and innovative farming methods, has seen
Fairmont grow to become one of the state’s leading
rural communities.Enjoy historical sites listed on the
Minnesota National Register, visit the ‘Lost Towns’ of
era residents in our historic downtown centers.
SEASONAL RECREATION
Wondering what’s the best time of year to visit
Martin County? The answer is simple. It’s allyear
round. No matter what season you choose to
visit, there is always something to see and do.
>> Winter (December – March)
For around three months of the year Martin County
becomes a winter wonderland. The surrounding
landscape takes on an ethereal beauty that’s just
begging to be enjoyed. Swap your four-wheeled vehicle
for a snowmobile and head out onto 140 miles
of groomed trails that connect with Faribault County
to the east, and Watonwan County to the north. Don
some skis and enjoy the scenery via some crosscountry
skiing, or how about a snowshoeing adventure?
There are groomed trails at Cedar Creek Park,
as well as trails at Bright Lake, Timberlane and
Cedar Hanson Parks. Fairmont has an indoor arena
for ice-skating, or try your hand at some ice fishing
at one of our local lakes.
>> Spring (April – May)
As the winter snows begin to melt, it’s time to
breathe in the fresh smells of spring. Blow away the
cobwebs during a leisurely ride or stroll along one
of our many bicycling and walking trails throughout
Fairmont, or pedal over to Bright Lake, Timberlane
or Cedar Hanson Parks. You will also find horseback
trails at these locations. Golfers can tee off at two
challenging 18-hole courses at Interlaken or Rose
Lake Golf Clubs. And if time is not on your side, then
take to the fairways of Fox Lake Golf Club for a ninehole
round.
Summer (June – August)
Where better to enjoy the lazy
days of summer than on the
shores and waters of Martin
County’s 49 lakes? Enjoy scenic views
from a boat, canoe or kayak, catch a fish
or two, or up the energy factor with a spot
of waterskiing. Water activities also beckon
at the Aquatic Park in Fairmont, along with
area swimming pools. Hiking, biking and
golfing continue on from the spring months,
as well as the opportunity for a round of
disc golf.Fairmont has two, 18-hole disc golf
courses – players throw plastic discs into a
series of metal baskets – at Cedar Creek Park.
SEASONAL RECREATION
>> Fall (September – November)
This is the perfect time to take in the magnificence
and beauty of Mother Nature’s changing colors.
Bright shades of green make way for red, yellow,
and gold, creating a spectacular backdrop from
which to enjoy fall activities. Pick up some sweet
and juicy apples from one of two local orchards,
or grab some cider or delicious homemade pies.
(www.CenterCreekOrchard.com and
www.TimberLakeOrchard.com) Go for a scenic
drive around the lakes and into our surrounding
countryside and parks, or head out onto the water
to enjoy the pre-winter rays of sunshine. This is
also a popular season for hunters, who travel to
Martin County to take advantage of the waterfowl,
white-tail deer and pheasants that gather in the
region. You can also get some target practice in
at the Fairmont Trap Club’s shooting range.
MARTIN COUNTY FAIR
Wednesday evening you will want to crimp your hair
and put on your 80’s best and come rock with Hairball.
Hairball is a Rock and Roll experience you
won’t soon forget. Most bands put on a concert -
Hairball puts on an event! The lights, sound, smoke,
fire, bombs, and screaming hordes of avid fans...to
merely call it a concert would be like calling Mount
Rushmore a roadside attraction! Hairball is more
than just a band - and certainly more than a tribute
band!
BUSINESS
The economic drivers of Fairmont and Martin
County are agriculture and industrial
businesses.
Fairmont is one of the state’s leading agricultural
communities, but also has a significant manufacturing
base, as well as a healthy combination of national
and homegrown companies.
Our city is the largest producer in Minnesota for both
hogs and corn, and it is among the state’s top 10 for
soybeans and cattle.
Thanks to our business-friendly climate and experienced
workforce, a number of agricultural-based
businesses have chosen to locate here. They include
Avery Weigh-Tronix, CHS, Green Plains Renewable
Energy, Advanced Drainage Systems,
Kahler Automation, Fairmont Vet Clinic, and Devenish
Nutrition.
There are more than 500 businesses operating in
the city, including two Fortune 500 companies, 3M
and CHS. The population of Fairmont is approximately
10,521, but our businesses serve a wider
base of 20,422 across Martin County.
