Expansion 

valve 

This valve regulates 

the flow of refrigerant 

into the evaporator and 

maximises the cooling efficiency 

of the evaporator. More 

commonly these can get blocked 

with debris or stick open/closed 

due to lack of oil. 

Orifice tubes 

This supplies a fixed flow 

of refrigerant into the 

evaporator and also provides 

filtration of debris. Commonly 

these get blocked reducing the 

system efficiency and should be 

changed or checked on every 

air con service. 

Accumulator 

This component 

accumulates liquid 

refrigerant to prevent 

compressor damage. It also 

removes impurities and moisture 

from the refrigerant. Over time 

it can become over saturated 

with moisture and should be 

replaced every 2 years or every 

time a component or pipeline is 

replaced. 

Receiver driers 

The receiver drier 

removes impurities 

and moisture from the 

refrigerant. Over time it can 

become over saturated with 

moisture and should be replaced 

every 2 years or every time 

a component or pipeline is

Evaporator 

Compressors 

Condensers 

The condenser efficiently dissipates the latent 

heat from the refrigerant as it condenses it 

into a high pressure liquid. Positioned in front 

of all other heat exchangers in the front of 

the vehicle, the condenser is more susceptible 

to damage and corrosion, and accounts for 

70% of system failures.

This allows the refrigerant to absorb 

heat and expand back into a gas, 

whilst at the same time provides 

interior cooling, de–humidification and 

in addition to the cabin filter, acts as a 

wet filtration system. Evaporators are 

susceptible to corrosion and bacterial 

smells and should be cleaned at 

least once a year with anti–bacterial 

treatments. 

The compressor turns the refrigerant 

and oil into a high pressure, high 

temperature vapour, ready to be 

condensed into a high pressure liquid 

in the condenser. Common failures are 

due to lack of oil return, pulley bearing 

wear, clutch coil failure, electronic 

control valve failure and mixtures of 

oils in hybrid/electric compressors.

Cabin filter types 

As the demands made on cabin filters vary, there 

are two main types of cabin filters available. 

Particle filters 

The particle filter keeps dust and particles such 

as pollen, diesel soot or tyre dust away from the 

interior of the vehicle. It is important to obtain 

the maximum possible filtration performance in 

the space available. For example, through the 

special pleating technique on Mann filters, the 

actual filtration area is increased without having 

to change the size of the filter. Laboratory tests 

confirm that up to 95% of dust particles and 

pollen are almost completely retained. 

Carbon filters 

The carbon filter has an additional function, 

compared with the particle filter. The activated 

charcoal layer embedded in the non woven 

absorbs, like a sponge, harmful gases such as 

nitrogen dioxide, fuels and ozone into pores 

which are 10,000 times finer than a human hair. 

That is how the combi–filter ensures a healthy 

cabin environment. This modern filter consists 

of a non woven–based particle filter media, an 

activated charcoal layer and a carrier media to 

improve stability. 

Clean air inside vehicles 

The air in urban areas contains large quantities 

of dust, pollen, soot and other particles, as well 

as gases which are harmful to health. More 

and more people are suffering from allergies 

and are increasingly aware of the subject of air 

conditioning and cabin filters. As a result, more 

vehicles leave the factory already fitted with cabin 

filters – a trend which is increasing. 

Cabin filters remove virtually all pollen and other 

unwanted particles, as well as harmful gases 

(combi–filters) from the air, thus ensuring a better 

atmosphere inside the vehicle. This is particularly 

important for people suffering from allergies, 

asthma, and for children.

Don’t forget the cabin filter! 

Cabin filter replacement is a great extra profit 

opportunity, yet in the UK, replacement rates 

are much lower than in the rest of Europe. 

According to MANN, replacing a cabin filter 

typically takes less than 17 minutes.

Loktrace Leak Detection Equipment 

The Loktrace leak detection system is an advanced method of leak detection suitable for 

both R134a and R1234yf systems. It uses Oxygen Free Nitrogen (OFN) 

to create pressure in the system to simulate the operating

Current methods of leak detection for both 

R134a and HFO1234yf refrigerants 

Vacuum test Proves a system is leaking but is virtually 

impossible to find under negative pressure. Where there is a 

build–up of dirt in and around the leak, this gets sucked in under 

negative pressure and will allow a vacuum to be held for a 

considerable time. This is also the case for split ‘o’ rings. 

Nitrogen pressure test (OFN) – suitable for any 

refrigerant type At 10 bar you may hear the leak, if not, 

you can use bubble solutions on accessible areas. This method is 

normally used on a system that is completely empty to ensure there 

are no major leaks before continuing with recharging the system. 

Nitrogen pressure test using ultrasonics – 

suitable for any refrigerant type At 10 bar pressure, 

the ultrasonic equipment can be used to find the leaks very easily. 

Small leaks emit high pitched ultrasonic waves which can be 

detected easily with an ultrasonic leak detection kit.

Nitrogen and refrigerant By adding some refrigerant 

and pressurising with OFN, an electronic sniffer can be used to 

trace leaking refrigerant. This method is not recommended as the 

refrigerant cannot be used for leak detection purposes, nor can it 

be recovered without large amounts of air being recovered into 

your air con machine. Also the cost of new refrigerants will make 

this method of diagnostics expensive. 

Nitrogen and hydrogen – suitable for any 

refrigerant type This is a technically advanced method of 

leak detection that is highly accurate, and future proof. By using 

nitrogen to create the pressure and a small amount of hydrogen, a 

specific hydrogen leak detector can be used to detect the leaks. 

Electronic refrigerant sniffers – suitable for 

any refrigerant type This is one of the best short term 

leak detection methods for minor leaks before the vehicle leaves 

the workshop. The refrigerant in the system should always be 

recovered once a leak has been found. 

UV dyes – suitable for any refrigerant type A 

long term leak detection method which is very accurate, but the 

refrigerant has to leak to atmosphere in order to show dye traces 

at the point of leakage.

PAG OIL (Polyalkylene Glycol Oil) 

OE in R134a & 1234yf systems. 

Always wear protective gloves and 

goggles while handling or servicing a 

system with PAG oils as they may cause 

skin irritations. 

Remember, PAG oil absorbs moisture 

from the air so must be kept in closed 

metal containers. 

There are three common viscosities 

when choosing PAG oil: 

* PAG (ISO) 46 - Thin 

* PAG (ISO) 100 - Medium 

* PAG (ISO) 150 - Thick 

GM sometimes recommends oil which 

is close to ISO 135. In this case, PAG 

150 is generally accepted by most 

technicians. Most Ester oils have a 

viscosity closer to ISO 100.
