More commonly these can get blocked with debris or stick open/closed due to lack of oil. Orifice tubes This supplies a fixed flow of refrigerant into the evaporator and also provides filtration of debris. Commonly these get blocked reducing the system efficiency and should be changed or checked on every air con service. Accumulator This component accumulates liquid refrigerant to prevent compressor damage. It also removes impurities and moisture from the refrigerant. Over time it can become over saturated with moisture and should be replaced every 2 years or every time a component or pipeline is replaced. Receiver driers The receiver drier removes impurities and moisture from the refrigerant. Over time it can become over saturated with moisture and should be replaced every 2 years or every time a component or pipeline is replaced. Evaporator Compressors Condensers The condenser efficiently dissipates the latent heat from the refrigerant as it condenses it into a high pressure liquid. Positioned in front of all other heat exchangers in the front of the vehicle, the condenser is more susceptible to damage and corrosion, and accounts for 70% of system failures. YEAR GUARANTEE This allows the refrigerant to absorb heat and expand back into a gas, whilst at the same time provides interior cooling, de–humidification and in addition to the cabin filter, acts as a wet filtration system. Evaporators are susceptible to corrosion and bacterial smells and should be cleaned at least once a year with anti–bacterial treatments. The compressor turns the refrigerant and oil into a high pressure, high temperature vapour, ready to be condensed into a high pressure liquid in the condenser. Common failures are due to lack of oil return, pulley bearing wear, clutch coil failure, electronic control valve failure and mixtures of oils in hybrid/electric compressors. 4
Cabin filter types As the demands made on cabin filters vary, there are two main types of cabin filters available. Particle filters The particle filter keeps dust and particles such as pollen, diesel soot or tyre dust away from the interior of the vehicle. It is important to obtain the maximum possible filtration performance in the space available. For example, through the special pleating technique on Mann filters, the actual filtration area is increased without having to change the size of the filter. Laboratory tests confirm that up to 95% of dust particles and pollen are almost completely retained. Carbon filters The carbon filter has an additional function, compared with the particle filter. The activated charcoal layer embedded in the non woven absorbs, like a sponge, harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxide, fuels and ozone into pores which are 10,000 times finer than a human hair. That is how the combi–filter ensures a healthy cabin environment. This modern filter consists of a non woven–based particle filter media, an activated charcoal layer and a carrier media to improve stability. Clean air inside vehicles The air in urban areas contains large quantities of dust, pollen, soot and other particles, as well as gases which are harmful to health. More and more people are suffering from allergies and are increasingly aware of the subject of air conditioning and cabin filters. As a result, more vehicles leave the factory already fitted with cabin filters – a trend which is increasing. Cabin filters remove virtually all pollen and other unwanted particles, as well as harmful gases (combi–filters) from the air, thus ensuring a better atmosphere inside the vehicle. This is particularly important for people suffering from allergies, asthma, and for children. Cabin filter replacement is a great extra profit opportunity, yet in the UK, replacement rates are much lower than in the rest of Europe. According to MANN, replacing a cabin filter typically takes less than 17 minutes.
