Communities Making a Difference<br />

Collaborating for Equitable, Sustainable Food System Reform<br />

In Cleveland, OH, there are 4.5 times as many fast-food establishments as full-service grocery<br />

stores, and only 21% of Cleveland adults report adequate fruit and vegetable consumption.<br />

About 26% of Cleveland’s approximately 400,000 citizens live below the poverty line, 10.8%<br />

have been diagnosed with diabetes and 33.8% are obese.<br />

Faced with these grim statistics, the Cleveland–Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition, a<br />

coalition of local government, nonprofits, farmers, researchers, food activists and citizens, has<br />

been directly involved in many initiatives that have dramatically increased healthy-food access<br />

in recent years, including:<br />

• The development and successful implementation of policy recommendations to encourage<br />

local food production, such as an affordable water policy for urban gardens and farms,<br />

long-term leases for urban agriculture and the creation of community gardens within<br />

walking distance of every resident.<br />

• The acceptance of SNAP benefits (often referred to as food stamps) at six of the nine<br />

farmers markets within Cleveland—compared with no markets in 2007.<br />

• The creation of 50 new community gardens in Cuyahoga County. In 2009, community<br />

gardens in the county produced $2.6 million to $3 million worth of fresh fruits and<br />

vegetables on more than 56 acres.<br />

• The creation of the Cleveland Corner Store Project, which helped increase the availability<br />

of fresh fruits and vegetables in convenience stores in underserved Cleveland<br />

neighborhoods.<br />

Join or Start a Food Policy Council<br />

Food policy councils (FPCs), like the Cleveland–Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition,<br />

bring together stakeholders from diverse food-related sectors to examine how the<br />

local food system is operating and to develop recommendations on how to improve<br />

it. FPCs can take many forms, but are typically either commissioned by state or local<br />

government or are a grassroots effort. They have been successful at educating officials<br />

and the public, shaping public policy, improving coordination between existing<br />

programs, and starting new programs.<br />

Joining or establishing an FPC in your area is a great way to improve access to<br />

nutritious food on a local and/or state level. Food First can help you find or found one:<br />
