Pr<strong>of</strong>. Christian Twigg-<br />
Flesner will start his<br />
new role as Head <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> on 1<br />
August. On being<br />
asked about his new<br />
position Christian said<br />
“It’s going to be a<br />
challenging period in light <strong>of</strong> the new funding<br />
arrangements for Higher Education, but also an<br />
exciting time as we are preparing to adopt a<br />
revised curriculum for our undergraduate<br />
programmes. It will be a period <strong>of</strong> continuous<br />
development for the <strong>School</strong>, with a need to branch<br />
out into a more diverse range <strong>of</strong> research and<br />
teaching activities. I would hope that working<br />
together as a <strong>School</strong>, we will be able to realise the<br />
potential <strong>of</strong> both staff and students and I am<br />
optimistic about the direction <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong>.”<br />
Staff updates<br />
Dr Peter Cserne will join the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> as Senior<br />
Lecturer from 2 July. Plus, Mr Carmino Massarella<br />
will soon join us as a Research Assistant and Miss<br />
Nikki Christie will start work with us as a Graduate<br />
Research Associate.<br />
Academic developments<br />
Amongst new modules to be introduced in<br />
2012/13 are ‘Science, <strong>Law</strong> and New Technologies‘,<br />
led by Dr Ludivine Petetin and also ‘Introduction to<br />
<strong>Law</strong> and Economics’ by Dr Peter Cserne.<br />
Research news<br />
Dr Albert Sanchez Graells’ book 'Public<br />
Procurement and the EU Competition Rules’<br />
(Oxford, Hart Publishing, 2011) was recently<br />
shortlisted by the jury <strong>of</strong> the 2012 Vogel Prix in<br />
Economic <strong>Law</strong>.<br />
Dr Martina Kunnecke delivered a paper at Trinity<br />
College, Dublin on 9 June. The conference was<br />
entitled ‘<strong>Law</strong>, Literature and Translation’.<br />
Martina’s paper was entitled “Bridging the Gap –<br />
Comparative <strong>Law</strong> and Legal Translation in the<br />
Court <strong>of</strong> Justice”.<br />
Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Gary Edles was one <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong><br />
experts invited to speak at the Workshop on<br />
Accountability <strong>of</strong> Independent Agencies Before<br />
Parliaments at the Montesquieu Institute,<br />
Maastricht, the Netherlands, to address "Bringing<br />
the US and European Experience Together."<br />
Dr Niaz Shah has attended a number <strong>of</strong> events:-<br />
On 17 April Dr Shah participated in a week long<br />
training for military lawyers (mainly from NATO<br />
countries) to be deployed to Afghanistan and<br />
other conflict zones at the Land Warfare Centre,<br />
Ministry <strong>of</strong> Defence, Warminster. His topic was<br />
‘The Taliban Rules and Regulations for Mujahidin<br />
and Islamic <strong>Law</strong>’.<br />
Dr Shah participated at a high level two day<br />
conference on 24 - 25 May at the South Asia<br />
Institute, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Heidelberg, Germany. The<br />
topic he presented was ‘The Legality <strong>of</strong> US Drone<br />
Attacks in Pakistan’. The event was reported in<br />
German and Pakistani media.<br />
Dr Shah spoke on ‘The Use <strong>of</strong> force against armed<br />
groups: the ‘unwilling or unable’ test and the<br />
armed groups in Pakistan’ on 2 May at Newcastle<br />
<strong>University</strong>.<br />
On 9 May BBC Pashto Service, London interviewed<br />
Dr Shah on the implications <strong>of</strong> Abu Qatada’s<br />
deportation (Othman (Abu Qatada) v. The United<br />
Kingdom ECHR 200 (2012)) when Qatada’s appeal<br />
was rejected on 9 May and the British government<br />
started preparations for his deportation.<br />
Dr Rhuks Ako is attending the IUCN Conference<br />
from 1 - 5 July at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Maryland. He<br />
will present a paper titled ‘Environmental Justice<br />
in Nigeria’s Oil Industry: Recognizing and<br />
Embracing Contemporary Legal Developments’.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Gerry Johnstone has been appointed Book<br />
Review Editor <strong>of</strong> a new journal: ‘Restorative<br />
Justice: An International Journal’ (to be published<br />
by Hart Publishing from 2013). He will be a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the editorial team <strong>of</strong> the journal which<br />
will publish original, ground-breaking and<br />
innovative articles about restorative justice.

Symposium on<br />
Restorative Justice & Human Rights in Greece.<br />
Dr Ludivine Petetin recently attended the XII<br />
Congress <strong>of</strong> the World Union <strong>of</strong> Academic<br />
Agrarians (UMAU) in Nitra (Slovakia). She<br />
presented a paper on ‘Consumer Preferences and<br />
Biotech Foods in EU and US law’ that was well<br />
received by the audience.<br />
PhD student Eghosa Ekhator has been given<br />
approval for £330 <strong>of</strong> funding from the <strong>Law</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong>’s Research Budget to attend the conference<br />
on ‘Civil Society Organizations Fighting Corruption:<br />
Theory and Practice Workshop’ at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Surrey on 9 - 10 July.<br />
Events<br />
Sarah Thind, the newly elected Chair <strong>of</strong> the Staff-<br />
Student Committee for 2012/13 attended the<br />
National <strong>Law</strong> Students’ Forum on 20 - 21 June at<br />
Nottingham Trent <strong>University</strong>. Sarah will prepare a<br />
report with feedback from the conference, which<br />
will be published in the next issue.<br />
Congratulations to Ben Chapman who is the newly<br />
elected President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Hull</strong> <strong>University</strong> Student<br />
<strong>Law</strong> Society for 2012/13.<br />
The <strong>Law</strong> Careers Fair, which takes place on 1<br />
November, has so far received confirmation <strong>of</strong><br />
exhibits from Stamp Jackson & Proctor, The<br />
College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, BPP, Dickinson Dees, Devine <strong>Law</strong>,<br />
Walker Morris, The City <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Sheffield and Northumbria <strong>University</strong>.<br />
That the OUP-BPP National Mooting Competition<br />
finals took place on 28 June and <strong>Hull</strong> (Katie Blake<br />
and Ben Chapman) put on a mighty performance<br />
attempting to persuade the judge about<br />

distinctions between subsidiaries and independent<br />
contractors, employment relationships and pupilteacher<br />
relationships, and illegality defence<br />
concerning an international element, all in a<br />
complex tort context. The finals, organised on a<br />
knock out basis, were won by Glasgow <strong>University</strong><br />
leaving <strong>Hull</strong>, Buckingham and Plymouth as runners<br />
up. Congratulations to both Katie and Ben on their<br />
efforts in the competition.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Jeremy Horder, the Edmund-Davies Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Criminal <strong>Law</strong> at King’s College London, <strong>Hull</strong><br />
graduate and former <strong>Law</strong> Commissioner, will<br />
receive an Honorary Degree at the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
graduation ceremony on 12 July.<br />
Internships with <strong>Hull</strong> City Council<br />
The <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> has entered into an agreement<br />
with <strong>Hull</strong> City Council for law students to<br />
undertake summer internships within the Council’s<br />
Legal and Democratic Services Department. The<br />
scheme is funded through the <strong>University</strong> run<br />
Internship Project, under the auspices <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hull</strong> Careers Service. The interns will<br />
receive a salary subsidy from the Internship<br />
Programme, with the host employer making a<br />
further contribution.<br />
Tom Neely (3 rd Year) and Loren Little (1 st Year) are<br />
the first two participants from the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />
They will be supervised by Legal Services’ lawyers<br />
and will be required in addition to other duties, to<br />
complete an employability journal – a short<br />
reflective journal that helps the intern to capture<br />
skills and experiences that will give them a<br />
competitive edge when applying for graduate level<br />
jobs, in the future.<br />
Frank Dignan, who has led for the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> on<br />
this initiative, said that this “will be a great<br />
opportunity for the students concerned, and will<br />
hopefully be the first <strong>of</strong> many such partnerships<br />
with other public sector employers in the <strong>Hull</strong><br />
area.”<br />
Careers Service<br />
Helen Creasy left the Careers Service on 22 June.<br />
The <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> is grateful for all the hard work<br />
Helen has provided during her time at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> and we wish her all the best in her<br />
future career. Helen’s replacement, Dr Suzanne<br />
Milan, will begin work in September.<br />
More accolades!<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hull</strong> has regained its top 50<br />
position by climbing four places from 53 to 49 in<br />
the 2013 Times Good <strong>University</strong> Guide published<br />
this week.
The <strong>Hull</strong> <strong>University</strong> Union has recently won the<br />
award for Innovative Student Engagement at the<br />
National Union <strong>of</strong> Students (NUS) Higher Education<br />
Awards. The awards aim to showcase some <strong>of</strong> the<br />
most innovative and successful activities<br />
happening within students’ unions across the UK<br />
on topics such as student engagement,<br />
representation and campaigning.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hull</strong> is opening its doors on<br />
Saturday 7 July to show prospective students, their<br />
families and friends why it is such a popular place<br />
to study.<br />
Alumni<br />
The <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> is producing an Alumni Directory<br />
to feature on our website and we would like to<br />
invite Alumni, both recent and past, to provide us<br />
with details <strong>of</strong> their current employment and/or a<br />
brief quote about their experiences <strong>of</strong> studying in<br />
