Fake Marriages By Students
To Get Immigration To Canada
BRAMPTON
HAS A MEMES
PAGE
By Ravinder Pal Singh Walia
BRAMPTON: 'Paper marriages'
is the latest trend
that is plaguing middle
and lower middle society,
especially in Punjab. A
prospective groom’s family
undertakes to bear all
the expenses of the girl’s
education and settlement
abroad. The girl is generally
from the economically
weaker section. But she
meets the eligibility criteria
(such as more than
6.5 Bands score in the International
English Language
Testing System or
IELTS) to study abroad.
The bride is accepted
only as a paper wife, and
she does not move to her
husband’s home after the
wedding.
On the other hand,
the groom i s
someone who is not able to
study abroad because he
has not cleared the IELTS
exam to meet eligibility
criteria. But he is desperate
to settle abroad.
This 'marriage of convenience’
is a fraud on the
sacred institution of marriage
and immigration
policies of foreign countries
where these people
want to emigrate. Once
these so-called couples are
settled abroad, they can
What are paper
marriages?
Paper marriage are, in fact,
"marriages of convenience"
under which families marry
off their daughters to fake
grooms so that the boy can
settle abroad. It is a contract
entered between the families
of a boy and a girl with utmost
privacy.
divorce after the fulfillment
of the contract.
In Punjab alone, thousands
of such marriages of
convenience have already
been contracted in recent
years. These marriages
are being contracted with
the active connivance of
dubious travel agents and
immigration consultants
who insert fraudulent advertisements
for brides
in vernacular newspapers.
These immigration
consultants charge hefty
amounts of money for
their illegal services to
ineligible boys who otherwise
can’t go abroad.
That’s how these crook
immigration consultants
trap people desperate to
go abroad.
It has become a thriving
business in Punjab.
When any case is brought
to the notice of NRI Police,
they say they cannot
investigate without getting
a formal complaint.
Interestingly, contracts
for marriages of convenience
are kept a closely
guarded secret between
the families of the boy and
the girl.
With a summer that is
bringing us recor- breaking
temperature, Brampton
has something bringing
the heat. The city has
always been the butt of
jokes across the GTA.
Now there is a Facebook
page that seems to be stepping
on some toes, including
the city itself, to the
point where the city has
requested that it refrain
from using the city’s logos
and copyrighted imagery
from its memes.
So what is a meme?
Lifewire describes it as
captioned photos that are
intended to be funny, often
as a way to publicly
ridicule human behavior.
Durga, Hanuman
yoga mats anger
American Hindus
The Canadian Parvasi
After the controversy over the use of Ganesha images
over leggings by a Texas company, now yoga mats have
appeared with images of Hindu
deities Ganesha, Durga and Hanuman.
These yoga mats have been
produced by Spiritual Revolution,
a company based at Gladwyne
in Pennsylvania.
Angry Hindu groups have
asked the company to withdraw
the mats as they offend Hindu
sentiments. The company is
selling the `Durga: The Great
Protectress’ yoga mat for $85. The
`Hanuman: Devotion in Action’ yoga mat also sells for
$85. The other yoga mats by the company are being sold
under various Hindu symbols - such as the third eye or
the heart chakra, etc. The company claims its “yoga mats
are the greatest tool to aid you in your journey to optimal
health, happiness, success, and peace.” It says its yoga
mats are toxic-free and ``each mat is designed to raise
your vibrational frequency”. As if this was not enough,
the company boasts, ``You can't buy happiness, but you
can buy a Spiritual Revolution yoga mat and that's basically
the same thing”.
Calling its a company of artists desiring to bring inspiration
to yoga practitioners, it says, ``Our vision is simple:
put amazing, gallery-quality artwork on eco-friendly
yoga mats. Our images are one-of-a-kind. They look just as
good hanging on your living room wall as they do under
your feet in Warrior III. Awaken to the Revolution and
live your yoga days filled with artistic inspiration!’’
Indo-Canadian man
arrested for making fake
school report cards
The Canadian Parvasi
BRAMPTON: Police have arrested and charged an
Indo-Canadian man for running a fake school report
cards racket.
A police statement said
Pavanjit Sohal, 28, allegedly
issued fake report cards
that several high school
students used to apply for
university enrollments.
Disclosing his modus
operandi, police said Sohal created a website posing in
the name of a legitimate private school called The Canadian
Higher Learning Academy and accepted payment
from unsuspecting students. Many unsuspecting
students fell into his trap because The Canadian Higher
Learning Academy is a private school approved by
the Ontario Ministry of Education. "The accused would
then produce bogus report cards and send (them) to the
secondary schools and the Ontario University Application
Centre on behalf of the students,” police said.
"These fraudulent report cards have now put the
students’ post-secondary education enrollment in the
fall of 2017 in jeopardy as the credit(s) will no longer
be accepted.’’
Sohal will appear in court on July 31. (from press
release)
Laverdière said, ``I am very pleased
today to announce that I am supporting
open, and attentive leadership style
convinced me that he is the future of
our party. I find his tremendous respect
for others, for their opinions,
and his willingness to listen inspiring.
It’s reminiscent of Jack and is exactly
the type of leadership we need for our
party,'' she said.
About Jagmeet's prospects in Quebec,
she said, ``While it is true that the
that I met the Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau. He held (the baby) and he
said, 'This is Justin-Trudeau,' and
then he says, 'I appreciate that you
named him after my name.’ " Muhammad
Bilal and Afraa Bilal came
to Canada as refugees with their two
young children in Feb 2016. The baby
with religion is complex and unique
in Canada, I know that Jagmeet will
be able to overcome any challenge that
it presents as people get to know him
and realize how much
his values and vision
resemble ours,” she
says. “Jagmeet’s commitment
to Québec’s
values of social justice
and equality will win
over hearts and minds.
His openness, his humility,
and his desire
to learn more about
Québec are among the
reasons I support him.” She added, “In
2015, our Party suffered from a certain
shyness. Jagmeet offers an ambitious
and positive vision for our future that
will attract a lot of people to the NDP to
help us form government in 2019.
“Jagmeet’s vision for Canada is a
New Democratic vision for our country
and I appreciate how his climate
change plan has real teeth. He is an
exceptional candidate and I am proud
to support him.”
“With him as our leader, the NDP
will be able to renew itself and reach
out to a new base of Canadians and
create space for the next generation of
organizers. From press release
John Horgan was sworn in
on July 18, replacing the
Liberal Party government
led by Christy Clark.
In the May assembly
elections, the BC Liberal
Party had won 43 seats and
the BC NDP 41, with three
seats going to the Green
Party.
After two months of
stalemate, the NDP and the
Green Party joined hands
to out the Liberal government.
Interestingly, Ujjal
Dosanjh was the last NDP
premier in British Columbia.
He was the premier for
about an year. He and the
NDP lost badly in the 2001
elections.
Canada won't
accept bad deal
on NAFTA
The Canadian Parvasi
TORONTO: Canada's ambassador
to the United States says his country
won’t accept a bad deal on NAFTA.
"We're ready to sit down and work
on this negotiation for as long as it
takes to get something that is going to
be good for Canadians,’’ Ambassador
David MacNaughton said while briefing
leaders at the premiers’ annual
summer meeting in Edmonton.
President Donald Trump has
called NAFTA unfair and wants the
23-year-old agreement to be renegotiated.
Ambassador David MacNaughton
said the prevailing uncertainty is
leading to delay in investment decision.
But he said "we're not going to
rush into a bad deal.’’ What are the
sticking points between Canada and
the US? Americans want more access
to their dairy and agricultural products.
They also feel their lumber industry
has got a raw deal because of
Canadian subsidies for their industry
and want independent dispute resolution
mechanism eliminated.
But MacNaughton pointed out
that the dairy and sugar industries in
the US too are heavily subsidized.

As NTN Bearing Corporation turns 100, Mayor
Bonnie Crombie thanks it for investing in Mississauga
The Canadian Parvasi
MISSISSAUGA: As the
NTN Bearing Corporation
of Canada celebrates 100
years of its founding, Mississauga
Mayor Bonnie
Crombie has praised it as
a leader in innovation and
manufacturing.
"NTN is a leading example
of a long-standing
Japanese manufacturer in
Mississauga that continues
to introduce new innovative
products to Canada,’’
said the mayor during a
town hall discussion with
employees and corporate
leaders of the company.
Crombie, who met
NTN President & CEO
Paul Meo and Vice-President
Seiji Shimamoto and
congratulated them on the
company’s 100th anniversary,
said, ``Mississauga
is home to nearly 100 Japanese-based
companies –
more than any other community
in Canada’’ and
praised NTN for investing
in Mississauga and delivering
quality services and
products.
Calling the 100th anniversary
of NTN a ``tremendous
milestone achieved
in the competitive world
of global business,’’ the
mayor congratulated all
employees on the company’s
for their outstanding
achievement in advanced
manufacturing.
"In Mississauga, we
mean business when it
comes to supporting our
vast and globally competitive
advanced manufacturing
sector – home to over
1,760 firms employing over
81,000 people locally. Our
industries range from:
aerospace to automotive;
from food and beverage to
clean tech,’’ Crombie said.
She thanked NTN and
its CEO for participating
in Mississauga’s Economic
Development Office’s
(EDO) Building Skilled
Talent Together Forum in
May when public and private-sector
leaders came
together to address the
city’s skilled labour shortage
and employee needs of
advanced manufacturing
companies.
The mayor said, "The
advancement of cuttingedge
technology through
Industry 4.0 has fundamentally
shifted the manufacturing
landscape globally.
These evolving global
trends are directly impacting
local employment patterns
and opportunities.
"The need for highlyskilled
and specialized
technical labour to develop,
operate and maintain
these advanced machines
and processes is now more
pronounced. While local
manufacturing firms have
voiced their ambitions to
expand locally, the technical
skilled labour gap is a
pressing challenge impacting
our firms.”
As NTN is sponsoring
the Japan Festival 2017 –
the biggest-ever Japanese
festival in Canada – being
held at Celebration Square
on August 26-27, Crombie
praised the company for
``being an active, engaged
and committed corporate
citizen.’’
The mayor, whose office
recently partnered
with Japanese-based MHI
Canada Aerospace to promote
the company’s Structural
Airplane Apprentice
Program for young people
to gain skills, advanced
training and a full-time job,
said, "Mississauga’s Economic
Development Office
will continue to work with
advanced manufacturing
businesses to find opportunities
to grow business,
better understand Canadian
rules and regulations,
and inform companies
about opportunities for
government investment.’’
Hello Bramptonians, join hands to
stop frauds in businesses!
By Brig (Retd) Nawab Singh Heer
and Ms Preet Pannu
It is really heartening
to see more and more non-
Caucasians in Brampton
and the GTA venturing into
businesses. They are not
just limiting to real estate,
transportation, immigration,
grocery stores, gas
pumps, restaurants, whole
sales, manufacturing, construction,
healthcare, etc.
These people have all
worked very hard and controlled
their expenses to
establish successful businesses.
They give employment
to many new immigrants
and contribute to the
economy.
A healthy competition
among them has benefited
the residents of the GTA in
getting more value for their
money. They speak the same
language of the immigrant
population and are aware of
the challenges faced by the
community, helping the immigrant
obtaining services
through them and adjusting
quickly to a new environment
fast.
Most of these business
owners are good innovators,
very enthusiastic and full
of dreams to expand. They
are creating a very healthy
competition which is resulting
in a win-win situation
for businesses and clients.
But we also need to look
the negative impact of many
unwanted practices of these
businesses.
Take immigration: they
violate values and ethics by
not telling the truth, overcharging
and promising
much more than they can
deliver.
In the trucking industry,
they pay less, they pay
in cash allowing cheating
on taxes, and they indulge
in exploitation by using
drivers as drug couriers.
The same holds true for
the restaurant industry:
less pay, exploitation of students,
sale of stale food, and
lack of cleanliness.
Many doctors are indulging
in unethical practices,
prescribing sedatives and
cheating insurance companies.
In grocery stores, they
indulge in cash business
to save taxes, sell spurious
items, exploit labour laws
and under-pay employees.
The list of unethical practices
is growing.
If we consider the principal
of 80:20, it means 80
percent of businesses are
very honest, value-based
and transparent, but the
other 20 percent want to
be rich overnight and they
have actually become. I
know a trucking company
owner who is constructing a
double-digit bedroom house
after 10 years of being in
business. It happens quite
often in our community.
The truth behind the success
of such dubious business
owners is usually kept
secret. No one talks openly
about how many trips were
made across the border
transporting drugs. But you
hear our people talk about
these stories in whispers.
It is a fact that many crossborder
drug pedlars are incarcerated
in Buffalo and
other surrounding towns.
Now the question is:
Why Canadian police forces
are so soft on these crooks?
This is the irony of the situation.
The cheating is not
restricted to the trucking
industry. In the insurance
industry, people cheat on
body injuries by overstating
their injuries and lying
to earn a few extra dollars.
Old Canadian values
are being dumped and new
methodologies for cheating
are being adopted. Canadians
evolved initial values
systems to trust a fellow
citizen to be honest, not
realising that when new
immigrants came they will
need a modification to the
value system.
Crooks have exploited
all the legal loopholes legally
and illegally to get rich.
Today, one who remains
on the right side of the law
tends to get demoralised.
But at the end of the
day, who suffers? It is poor
bloody Bramptonians, our
children and our future.
We all are a party to it, be
it people who indulge in
these malpractices, be it
people who help them and
be it the silent public who
sees it happening, but never
speaks up.
In front of our eyes, we
see the old Canadian values
are being trampled upon
and rules being flouted.
Everybody knows what is
happening; but no one is
belling the cat. In my view,
it is time to decide whether
we want to stand up and
speak up or be doomed. It
is time to act. Today, you
have social media at your
disposal. You have a camera,
so become a self-styled
reporter. Whenever you
find anything going wrong,
either report it or put it in
social media. Join hands to
expose crooks, otherwise
you will keep paying the
highest insurance and the
highest taxes. Join hands
against crooks, otherwise
you will always be scared
that someone will sell drug
to your children and always
scared that someone can
hit you from behind and
run away. The government
must commission help lines
where citizens can report
all types of frauds happening
in Brampton.
Wake up, Bramptonians!
Let us join hands and
make a difference.
Mississauga Mayor welcomes proposed
appointment of Chief Scientist for Ontario
The Canadian Parvasi
MISSISSAUGA: With
the Ontario government
holding consultations
with stakeholders for the
proposed position of Chief
Scientist, Mississauga
Mayor Bonnie Crombie
has praised as the Wynne
government for its initiative
to establish the new
position.
The first Chief Scientist
is expected to be appointed
later this year.
The Ontario government
wants the Chief
Scientist to "lay the
groundwork for the next
generation of research
and innovation jobs by
defining the best science
strategy for the province.’’
Towards this end,
Ontario’s Ministry of Research,
Innovation and
Science had sought public
input on the role, responsibilities
and mandate of
the Chief Scientist.
As per the feedback,
the overwhelming view
is that the Chief Scientist
should have ``exceptional
networking skills’’ and be
an "excellent educator.’’
The Mississauga mayor
says, "The overall feedback
is consistent with
our very own submission.’’
In her own input
in March, Mayor Crombie
had made three key recommendations:
strengthening
existing connections,
aligning existing strategic
planning priorities and
support for post-secondary
institutions.
Crombie had also suggested
aligning scientific
research with economic
development, especially in
the field of life sciences.
"Mississauga is home
to Canada’s second
largest life sciences
cluster in Canada with
more than 430 life
sciences companies
employing 22,000 people,’’
according to the mayor.
Crombie has thanked
Research, Innovation and
Science Minister Reza
Moridi "for the opportunity
to once again provide
public input to shape
the important work that
will be undertaken by the
Chief Scientist.
"Working together,
both the public and private
sector can bring
about new and important
research that safeguards
and elevates the quality
of life for Ontarians, and
unleashes new opportunities
that can lead to economic
development.’’
Ram Nath Kovind becomes India's second Dalit President
Known for his proximity to RSS, he once said: 'Islam and Christianity are alien to the nation'
The Canadian Pravasi
Bihar Governor Ram
Nath Kovind, 71, will be the
next President of India. He
beat opposition candidate
Meira Kumar, securing
65.5 percent of the vote.
Declaring him the winner,
presidential election
returning officer Anoop
Mishra, said, ``Kovind
secured 2930 votes with
a value of 7,02,044. Meira
Kumar got 1,844 votes with
the value of 3,67,314, and 77
votes were invalid.’’
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, who had handpicked
Kovind for the top
post in India, said on his
victory, ``Gladdened by
the extensive support for
Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji
among MPs & across various
states.’’
Finally, Uttar Pradesh,
which has given many
prime ministers to the
country, will also have a
President.
After KR Narayana,
Kovind is the second Dalit
to become the President of
India.
Kovind belongs to the
Koli community which is
India's new President Ram Nath Kovind seen with PM Narendra Modi and other leaders at the time of filing his papers.
notified as Scheduled Caste
in Uttar Pradesh.
As the voting to elect
the new President began
in the morning, people at
Kovind’s native village in
UP started offering prayers
for his victory.
Born in Kanpur Dehat
district of Uttar Pradesh,
Kovind practised law in
the Delhi High Court and
the Supreme Court. He
joined the BJP in 1991 and
has served its national
spokesperson. He was the
party’s MP for the Rajya
Sabha from UP from 1994
to 2006. He was appointed
Bihar Governor in Aug
2015.
His father was very
close to former Prime Minister
Morarji Desai, and
Kovind served as Morarji’s
personal assistant in 1977-
78.
He is married and has a
son and a daughter.
Though he has never
been a member of the RSS,
India’s new President has
a long association with the
Sangh Pariwar.
Addressing a press conference
as the BJP’s national
spokesperson in March
2010 at the party headquarters
in Delhi, Kovind had
reportedly said that Islam
and Christianity are alien
to India. He said this as he
opposed the inclusion of
Muslim and Christian converts
among the Scheduled
Castes, as recommended
by the Justice Ranganath
Misra Commission.
When a reporter questioned
him why Sikh
converts were included
among Scheduled Castes,
Kovindreplied, ``Islam and
Christianity are alien to
the nation."
Because of his proximity
to the Sangh Pariwar,
the CPI had opposed
Kovind’s candidature,
with CPI party general
secretary Suravaram Sudhakar
Reddy saying, ``He
(Kovind) is also from RSS
ranks. He was president of
Dalit BJP Morcha... Sangh
Pariwar organisation.
Definitely, we will put up
a candidate. Anybody from
RSS... We will fight.’’
The newly elected
President has donated his
ancestral home in UP as
`Barat Ghar’ to the village
community.
Reacting her defeat,
Meira Kumar, who is the
daughter of independent
India’s best-known dalit
leader and former deputy
prime minister Jagjivan
Ram, said, ``I am not upset,
why should I be upset?
I am a fighter, I fought for
the belief and faith of majority
of my countrymen
and women.’’
The unflappable Kumar
said ``today is like any
other day for me.’’
Meira Kumar, who entered
the Indian Foreign
Service in 1975 but quit to
enter politics in 1985, has
been a five-time Member of
Parliament. She was also
India’s first woman Speaker
from 2009 to 2014.
expectations and opportunities.
I feel blessed to be doing
what I'm doing.’’
Born in New Delhi, Jonita
was raised in Toronto and
started singing as a little
kid. Encouraged by her dad,
Deepak Gandhi - who is an
engineer and musician- she
believes her journey to success
started in childhood.
"Every music lesson,
every short cameo performance
I was part of as a child
and every scratch recording
I do even now, is part of my
path towards success," she
says. "The important thing
is maintaining the right attitude
to keep learning and
to persevere. There will be
good times and bad times
and you have to be willing to
keep improving and to continuously
put yourself outside
of your comfort zone."
She always aspired to be
a playback singer and realized
in her teens that singing
was her ultimate passion.
She narrates how she wrote
about wanting to be famous
in her school diary.
How did she get a break
in Bollywood?
Says Jonita, "My debut in
Bollywood happened when I
met with Vishal Dadlani at
his studio for the first time.
He was working on the title
track for Chennai Express
at the time and asked me if
I wanted to try the song. I
didn’t expect anything from
it but was thrilled to find out
that my voice was kept."
Jonita’s next milestone
was the song Kahaan Hoon
Main in Highway which was
also her first solo song.
But it wasn’t until Sau
Tarah Ke from Dishoom that
her name and voice started
getting recognized among
the masses and it was also
her first song to appear on
Top 10 charts.
About fitting in Bollywood,
she says, "At first, it
was a bit challenging to not
get typecast as only able to
sing a certain genre. But
now I’m thankful to have
had opportunities to showcase
different styles of singing
over time."
It's amazing that even
though she was raised in
Canada, Jonita has a clear
Hindi diction and has
worked on getting it right.
"I’ve always found pronunciation
in any language
is really important. My family
speaks Hindi and Punjabi
so those two languages come
easier than others. However,
I've realized that even within
those, there are different dialects
and colloquial terms
that are sometimes required
for films. I understand how
the meaning of a word can
change drastically with incorrect
pronunciation.’’
As she performed at
various South Asian events,
she sang in many different
Indian languages as well. As
a playback singer she has already
sung in English, Hindi,
Tamil, Punjabi, Marathi,
Bengali, Gujarati, Telugu
and Kannada.
Jonita believes that a
singer must focus on, "developing
own unique sound’’
warning that ``it’s so easy
to fall into the trap of sounding
like someone else when
you’re learning, especially
when you’re trying to mimic
sounds you hear, but once
that comfort level is crossed,
sounding unique is what
you'll need to set you apart
from others."
Jonita describes the opportunity
to work with A.R.
Rahman as a "positively
overwhelming experience’’
for her. "I have learned so
much about music, about
my own capacity as a
singer, and about
being a good
human being." She
agrees that online is a good
route for aspiring newcomers.
"It gives you a great
platform to showcase your
ability, to see yourself grow
and also to get feedback
from your audience. People
from all over the world and
all walks of life can stumble
upon your work and their
feedback can be extremely
helpful. Not to mention - you
never know, you could get
discovered by someone really
great and it could open
up a whole avenue of opportunities
for you!’’

Governor General says he touched the
Queen's elbow so that she didn't stumble
TORONTO: Canadian
Governor General David
Johnston, who has been
slammed on social media
for breaking royal
protocol by touching the
Queen’s elbow during a
meeting with the monarch
outside Canada House in
London on Wednesday,
says he was just trying
to prevent the Queen
from stumbling when he
breached royal protocol.
The Governor General,
who is the Queen's representative
in Canada, is
in London on his farewell
visit to meet the monarch
before he lays down the
office.
Clarifying his position
on the breach of protocol,
the Governor General told
CBC News, "I'm certainly
conscious of the protocol.
"I was just anxious
to be sure there was no
stumbling on the steps.
It's a little bit awkward,
that descent from Canada
House to Trafalgar
Square, and there was
carpet that was a little
slippy, and so I thought
perhaps it was appropriate
to breach protocol just
to be sure that there was
no stumble.’’
Though there is no
traditional royal protocol,
British monarchs usually
don't shake hands and you
don't touch them.
As the current Canadian
monarch, the Queen
was visiting Canada
House in London to mark
the country's 150th birthday.
As it is the 65th year
of her reign, the Queen
was presented a sapphire
brooch on behalf of the
Canadian people to mark
her Sapphire Jubilee (65
years of her reign).
TORONTO: Enhanced security measures came into
force on Wednesday for US-bound flights out of Canada.
New measures for US-bound flights also come
into force at about 280 airports in more than 100 other
countries.
About 325,000 passengers flying out of Canada will
be impacted on a daily basis by the new measures.
WestJet and Air Canada are advising passengers
to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their
US departure to make sure they are screened with
plenty of time, says a press release.
Passengers are advised to remove personal electronic
devices from the case before entering security
lines.
US Department of Homeland Security says extra
screening for electronic devices and tighter security
protocols in passenger areas and around aircraft are
part of the new security measures.
Security screenings have been tightened in the
light of “spider web of threats to commercial aviation
as terrorist pursue new attack methods.”
According to the press release, officials plan expanding
the use of canine screening and adding more
pre-clearance locations at around 280 airports affected
by the new measures.
Brampton residents warned
about fake firefighters
Hydro bills are coming down in Ontario,
and here’s why it’s the right thing to do
Brampton Fire Platoon Chief John Clare says, "If anyone does
show up at your home claiming to be from Brampton Fire and
Emergency Services and they're not in uniform then you need
to be concerned and you should call and report it right away.''
The Canadian Parvasi
BRAMPTON: After an incident
on Tuesday in which
two men posing as firefighters
tried to enter a home
in Brampton for checking
smoke and carbon monoxide
detectors, Brampton
fire department officials
are cautioning people to be
careful about fakes.
Residents have been
cautioned that Brampton
fire officials always wear
uniforms, and carry ID
when knocking at people’s
doors. According to Brampton
fire Deputy Chief Peter
Gatto, when firefighters go
door-to-door as part of various
community outreach
programs, including the
Alarmed for Life Program,
these programs are advertised
in advance. "We put
hangers on the doors days
before,” Gatto said.
The incident which has
triggered this warning to
residents happened in the
area of McLaughlin Road
and Bovaird Drive on Tuesday
when the two men, carrying
what appeared to be
a bag of alarms, said they
were from Brampton Fire
and Emergency Services
and wanted to come inside
her home.
The woman didn’t allow
them to enter her home. Instead,
she called Brampton
fire’s non-emergency line
to report the incident. Peel
Regional Police have not
been able to find the two
men and the fire department
thinks it was an isolated
incident.
Glenn Thibeault
When we introduced
Ontario’s Fair Hydro
Plan in March, our government
committed to
fundamentally restructuring
the system to deliver
the biggest cut to
electricity rates in Ontario’s
history.
I’m happy to say that
the Fair Hydro Plan is
now a reality. And I believe
this is the fairer
way forward.
Recently, the Ontario
Energy Board (OEB) announced
it had taken the
final steps to lower electricity
prices by an average
of 25 per cent for all
residential consumers in
the province. As many as
half a million small businesses
and farms will
also benefit.
The OEB, the province’s
independent body
that sets rates, lowered
bills in response to the
Fair Hydro Act, 2017,
which passed in the
Ontario legislature on
May 31. All Progressive
Conservative and NDP
MPPs in attendance that
day opposed our plan to
bring down electricity
rates and voted against
the Fair Hydro Plan.
Relief through the
Fair Hydro Plan is immediate.
We also designed
these reductions to last,
by holding electricity
rates to inflation for four
years. In addition, we’re
updating our long-term
energy plan, which will
continue our trend of taking
costs out of the electricity
system and making
it more affordable for
ratepayers.
Fifteen years ago, our
electricity system had
become unreliable, the
victim of years of neglect
by governments of all
stripes, which culminated
in the unforgettable
blackout of 2003.
We had to reinvest in
our system, and that came
at a cost to ratepayers.
But the fact is electricity
bills were becoming unaffordable
for too many people.
Premier Wynne and
I spoke to people across
the province about their
electricity bills, hearing
how they were struggling
with rising payments.
In September 2016,
we announced an eight
per cent rate reduction,
equivalent to the provincial
portion of the HST.
But that wasn’t enough.
People’s bills were still
increasing too much, too
fast. As we continued to
listen to peoples’ concerns,
it became clear
that we needed to bring
even more relief and it
had to apply to everyone
in the province, which
led to our Fair Hydro
Plan. We heard that the
most vulnerable among
us needed even more support.
That’s why we expanded
the Ontario Electricity
Support Program,
providing 50 per cent
more support in the form
of monthly credits for
people with low incomes.
Today, more households
are eligible for the program
than ever before.
People in rural and
northern communities
also pay more for electricity,
because it takes
more infrastructure to
deliver electricity to
where they live. Today,
the Rural or Remote Rate
Protection Program has
been expanded to help
about 800,000 households
— cutting electricity bills
by 40 to 50 per cent for eligible
customers, effective
July 1.
These changes to the
way we pay for electricity
are fairer, and they
are lasting.
We can afford them
because of Ontario’s
strengthening economy,
which is the fastest growing
in Canada, and we
need them to ensure the
growth in our economy
translates to more opportunity
and security
for people right across
Ontario.
There is no better
way to use the province’s
recently balanced budget
than by giving everyone
the break they need on
their hydro bills. It’s the
right thing to do for Ontario
and the fair thing to
do for your family.
Ontario’s Minister of Energy)
Fake Marriages By Students To Get Immigration
These illegal contracts come to light only when a serious conflict takes
place between the two parties. It is a dubious way devised by the clever people
who have scant regard for the law. Curiously, some girls are reported to
have entered into such sham marriages more than once by taking divorce on
some fictitious grounds of illegality.
We need to be proactive on this issue as Punjab is already facing the infamous
phenomenon of abundant brides because thousands of Punjabi women
have been deserted by NRI grooms in recent past. Social pressure groups
and non-government organizations (NGOs) must create public awareness to
stop this evil by exposing the nefarious designs of illegal consultants.
Moreover, these marriages of convenience will jeopardize the chances of
genuine couples in getting visa and immigration because immigration authorities
in the sought-after countries such as Canada are bound to tighten
the screening process for new immigrants.
BRAMPTON HAS A MEMES PAGE
Other memes can be videos and verbal expressions. There are no safe spaces
on this page. Brampton memes makes fun of everything Brampton, including
crime, traffic, insurance, driving, race, religion and single moms. But it
seems like the onslaught can’t be contained within the city limits; as Mississauga
and Georgetown are getting roasted as well. What are especially funny
are the heated battles in the comment section between followers of the page
that are sometimes funnier than the memes themselves. They have been reported
and suspended from Facebook numerous times.
According to the administrators; the page was started as just a joke and
80% of the memes have been submitted by its followers. They also commented
that although the page does have some material that can be deemed offensive.
We do our best to make fun of everyone, as we believe in equality.
Sometimes the funniest part is sit back watch how triggered someone can get
over an image. But it isn’t always just about the memes, they also post general
links related to Brampton. Either way they have over 20,000 followers
and have a reach over 2 million people. Clearly people are finding it funny.
Is it offensive?
BRAMPTON: Investigators
from the Peel Regional Police
Central Robbery Bureau
have arrested and charged a
male in relation to a gunpoint
carjacking that occurred in
the City of Brampton.
On Saturday, July 15,
gun at him and demanded his
car keys. A physical altercation
Councillor Carolyn Parrish spars with comedian
Russell Peters, tells him to stay in the US
The Canadian Parvasi
MISSISSAUGA: Maverick
Mississauga Councillor
Carolyn Parrish, who is
known for her controversial
remarks, has this time targeted
comedian Russell Peters
after he said in an CNN
interview that he "felt more
like an immigrant in Canada’’
than in the US. Tweeting
her angry response, Parrish
advised Peters, "Good
to know, Sunshine! You can
stay there.’’
Peters, who is of Indian
origin, ranked ninth on
Forbes’ 2016 list of highestpaid
comedians, with an annual
income of $9 million.
Since it is Peters’ racebased
humour that has made
him a hit with audiences,
fetching him a role in many
Hollywood movies, the Mississauga
councillor said,
"We helped him become successful
by being open with
his brand of humour. I was
angry that he was so dismissive
of the country who got
him where he is.”
On the CNN interview
when Peters was asked how
he uses race and ethnicity
as a hook for his brand of
humour, he replied, "I think
it’s just the way my brain
is programmed, you know,
from being born in Canada
and even though I was born
and raised in Canada, I felt
like I was treated like an immigrant
the whole time, and
then 11 years ago, I moved to
America and now I’m actually
an immigrant and feel
more assimilated then I did
in Canada, oddly enough.”
This made Carolyn Parrish
angry. But for Carolyn
Parrish, anything about the
US raises her hackles. She
has called the Americans
bastard. In 2004, she was
kicked out of the Liberal party
after she stomped on a doll
of President George W. Bush
for the CBC’s This Hour Has
22 Minutes. She was angry
about the Iraqi invasion by
the US-led coalition, calling
it a ``coalition of idiots.’’
Because of her acerbic
tongue, a supporter presented
her a embroidered pillow
in 2005 for her tendency to
get into trouble.
Ontario families being gouged on
hydro bills, says NDP
TORONTO - Ontario NDP Energy Critic Peter Tabuns issued the following statement
regarding today's Fraser Institute report on Ontario's skyrocketing hydro costs:
“The report released this morning by the Fraser Institute shows that Ontario families
are being gouged, paying the highest prices for hydro in the nation.
That report underscores the need to bring hydro back into public hands so we can
regain control over skyrocketing bills.
With hydro bills going up at four times the rate of inflation, still we see another 20 per
cent hike to delivery rates being considered. And top of that, we learned yesterday that
Hydro One will buy and merge with American utility giant Avista -- a move to create a
huge multinational utility that means even less control and even more financial risk for
Ontarians.
The NDP has a plan to lower hydro bills for everyone by at least 30 per cent and bring
hydro back into public hands, so families can afford to keep their lights on and make
dinner at dinner time once again, and hydro revenues can be invested into the services
people need, from health care to transit.
earlier in March 2017, by
overbidding a host of potential
buyers and closing
the deal in June 2017.
He put his primary house
on sale in the last week of
May. But he was unable to
get the high price he was
hoping for. Now he is out
of pocket because of his
quest for a bigger home,
but a lot wiser.
In this context, let us
discuss the macroeconomic
scenario in Canada
and the factors causing
the recent downtrend in
house prices in GTA.
We all know that investment
money moved
into real estate markets
in a low interest scenario
during the last five
years.
Consistent low mortgage
interest rates over
the last few years fuelled
the hot housing sector.
The other two major factors
that fuelled the housing
sector are new immigrants
who purchase
new homes and foreign
real estate investment in
the condos and commercial
space sectors in a big
way.
Then the Ontario
government intervened
in April by unveiling a
slew of measures aimed
at making housing more
affordable. The 16-odd
new measures announced
include 15% foreign buyer
tax and expanded rent
control rules.
Coinciding with the
Ontario government measures,
the Bank of Canada
also hiked its benchmark
interest rate to 0.75% from
0.5%, its first increase in
nearly seven years.
As we all know, Increase
in bank interest
rates will have an effect
on interest rates of some
personal loans, lines of
credits, etc. If the Bank of
Canada’s benchmark interest
rate progressively
rises to 1.5%, home prices
will come down.
We spoke with an eminent
and upcoming real
estate agent Harpreet
Singh - who is affiliated
with Royal LePAGE Flower
City Realty - for his
views on current housing
market.
Harpreet, who has
received Gold award for
sales in 2016 from his
brokerage and Master
Sales award from Royal
LePAGE in 2016, is of the
opinion that the current
market as of July 2017 is
a level playing field for
both buyers and sellers.
People have booked
new homes or are closing
their next purchase and
moving in this summer.
Slowly the home inventory
is rising. New
immigrants coming into
Canada prefer to buy a
home rather than to rent.
Brampton has low inventory
of parcels of available
land for new real
estate projects. Caledon,
Milton and cities to the
east of Toronto have the
land required for new
homes.
According to Harpreet,
foreign investors
are mostly buying into
condo market and commercial
space.
He is very positive
that house prices will stabilize
by October/November
of this year and then
start moving up slowly.
The International News Weekly July 21, 2017 | Toronto 20
Reema Sehgal
A brilliant student and
an obedient son with steady
A grades in math and science
at high school, Ajay
shocks his teachers and parents
when one night before
an important exam he writes
on the wall of his room, “Tomorrow
I will kill myself if
the exam goes wrong”!
It was sheer chance that
someone could see the writing
in time and inform the
authorities in the college
residence. Till then nobody
realized how much he is into
himself, parents considered
this a good sign for his academic
results and the college
could not observe anything
strange. But the assessments
confirmed major depression
and drug addiction.
Another place, another
name. Suman was being
congratulated for being
blessed with a much-awaited
baby after nine years of
marriage; but no celebration
could make her feel good.
Nothing could brighten her
life and even the baby could
not make her respond as any
other mother. Gradually,
the family including her
husband and in-laws started
to blame her for being irresponsible,
and escaping from
her duties of a mother, homemaker
and wife. Eventually,
after around six months of
seeing her getting from bad
to worse, her behavior was
discussed with the physician,
who referred her for
detailed psychological assessment
and diagnosis of
post-partum depression was
confirmed. Still, it took the
family quite some time to
recognize that it is real illness
that involves immense
psychological distress.
The stories are endless,
the illness real and prevalent.
But the approach of
majority of people is denial
and silence!
Researchers have studied
the effect of stigma on
mental illness. According to
Dr. Patrick W Corrigan, serious
mental illness is a twoedged
sword: It challenges
those affected not only with
disability but also with unjust
social stigma, which
denies them opportunities
to work, live independently,
and pursue other goals.
However, within the
south Asian community, it
has worse effects due to denial
and the resulted delayed
or no treatment.
Had Ajay suffered a fracture,
the whole world would
have noticed it, been there
for him even the though
the comparative pain of a
fracture would be much less
than that of loneliness, sadness,
inability to function
and the feel good factor compared
to depression!
If Suman had pneumonia
instead of mental illness,
the same in- laws and
husband would have taken
extra care of her and would
have been sorry for her! Society
has a tendency to view
mental health issues differently
from medical ones. The
attitude needs to change and
accept mental illness to be as
much of an illness as physical;
before another Ajay actually
spoils his exam and
ends it all!
The World Health Organization
(WHO) states that
“there is no health without
mental health.’’ In reality,
the hurt and anguish of the
mental distress are as painful
or sometimes worse than
the wounds on the body.
When we look around at the
people we know in the family,
friends and other social
connections, there is rarely
one who is free from psychological
conflict or stress. But
when we talk about mental
health, none would ever admit
that they have a problem.
This continuous denial
of a very significant aspect of
health leads to other complications.
Some of the signs and
symptoms of mental illness
include unusual drop in
functioning at school, work
or social activities; social
withdrawal and loss of interest
in others; loss of initiative
or desire to actively
engage; feeling of being disconnected
from oneself or
one’s surroundings; a sense
of unreality; illogical thinking,
irrational worry, fear or
nervousness; unexplained
changes in sleep, moods or
appetite and other such unexpected
trend in behavior.
One or more of these symptoms
may be found in many
of us, however if it is making
the person dysfunctional or
if a person is experiencing
several of the symptoms at
one time, he/she should be
seen by a mental health professional.
People with suicidal
thoughts or intent, or
thoughts of harming others,
need immediate attention.
As a community, the
south Asians are close knit.
However, the acceptance of
mental illness as a disease is
yet to happen. Priya-Alika
Elias wrote in her article
`The Silence About Mental
Health in South Asian
Culture Is Dangerous’ that
‘There is a tendency to underestimate,
smooth over
(“what do you have to get
depressed about”), and denying
pain (“look at those
who are dying to come to
Canada, you are so lucky
to be here”) are some of the
ways the community traditionally
looks at individual
pain. The only metric is
other people. Other people,
one is told, have it so much
worse than you do—so shut
up. And so, what other
people might perceive as a
crisis point is not treated as
one. Need of the hour therefore,
is to wake up to the fact
that mental health is as important
as physical health
and similarly mental illness
is just an illness, that needs
treatment.
Through this weekly
column, let us begin a dialogue
about breaking the old
walls of stigma and decide to
learn both about mental illness
and mental health and
accept the two equally - as a
treatable illness. Let us wake
up to the fact that according
to Canadian Mental Health
Association mental illness
indirectly affects all Canadians
at some time through
a family member, friend or
colleague and 20% of Canadians
will personally experience
a mental illness in their
lifetime.
Good initiative by Parvasi Media Group
This is a very good initiative by the Parvasi Media Group to launch a mainstream
newspaper for the desi community.
I went through the entire paper and have a few suggestions:
1. Please try to make it more mainstream in line with papers such as the Toronto
Star. Possibly, it should have half of its space devoted to desi community
news and maybe half of it to Canadian news. Presently, there are many newspapers
which are fully devoted to desi news but there is not even one which is a mix
of both Canadian and desi news.
This will help you get viewership of all people who now read separate newspapers
for Canadian and desi news. This will also help you get viewership of Canadian-born
kids of the Indian community who are more interested in Canadian
news.
2. You can make it more interactive for women in the community by having
sections on fashion trends, cooking recipes, etc.
3. There can also be a section on kids.
4. These days technology trends, automation, smart homes, etc., are big topics
of interest for people. There should be regular sections on technology trends, etc.
I can write articles on these topics as this is what I deal with as a consultant with
MNCs on latest technology trends, automation, transformations, etc.
My son also regularly writes blogs on similar things. His blogpost can be
viewed at: http://suyashhanda.blogspot.in/2017
Letters to the Editor
Stop mentioning religion or sub-ethnicity in headlines
I would like to kindly convey the following message to the editor of The Canadian Parvasi:
On page 2 of the July 14 issue of the paper, there is a news item with the heading `2 Brampton Sikh
students achieve rare distinction’. On reading the details, one learns that there were four students
to achieve the distinction (of scoring 100% marks). The other two students, in addition to the two
mentioned in the headline, are also Indo-Canadian. So, in my view, a better headline would have been
'"4 Indo-Canadian students achieve rare distinction". This would have reflected a sentiment of unity
among Indo-Canadians. By singling out the achievement of only the Sikh students in the headline,
this sentiment has been ignored. Let us be happy for the achievements of all our children, regardless
of which sub-ethnic group they belong to.
Ironically, on the very same page, there is another news item with the heading "Two Indo-Canadian
youths arrested for robbing taxi driver in Brampton." On reading the details, we learn that both
the youths are Sikh. So the sense conveyed is something that I am sure the editor did not intend: that
when achievements are involved, the identity of Sikh is emphasized, but when the news is of a negative
kind, the identity suddenly changes to Indo-Canadian.
Again, on the same page, there is another news item relating to a traffic-accident death, and the
deceased person is identified in the headline as 'Gujarati man'. It would have been advisable to avoid
referring to sub-ethnicity of the victim in the headline. I am sure the readers, once they learn his name
in the report (Harshadrai Patel) would be able to correctly guess his sub-ethnicity.
The point I am trying to convey is that as opinion makers, it behooves our media to foster a sense
of unity in our community. Avoiding mention of religious or sub-ethnicity-based identity of the people
in the news would be a first step in that direction.
I hope and trust my message will be taken in a positive spirit.
Best regards,
Darshan

India looks at the
possibility of staging
2032 Olympics
The Canadian Parvasi
India is launching a bid to explore the possibility
of staging the 2032 Olympics.
India’s bid for 2032 comes as the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) has already allotted
the 2024 and 2028 games to Los Angeles and
Paris.
The Indian Olympics Association has approached
the Indian government to start a bid for
the 2032 Olympics.
Towards this end, the Indian sports ministry
has launched a feasibility study to explore the
possibility of staging the Olympics.
IOA President N. Ramachandran has said
that India should move forward quickly.
"You cannot take a decision today and say, ‘I
want to host an Olympic Games tomorrow.’ It is
an eight-year process. So you have to start now,”
he was quoted as saying.
“If you are looking at anything it’s 2032. That
will give you 10 years to improve the infrastructure
and you will have a decision (to make) in the
next four to six years.”
“We are keen on understanding where the
country stands before we decide upon the future
course of action.
All things that go into hosting the Games will
be discussed as we pose ourselves the question
whether it is desirable and practical and whether
we ought to consider bidding for Olympics at any
point,’’ a sports ministry official was quoted as
saying by the Times of India.
