Dementia
Support Service
As the numbers of those living
with dementia increases,
there is a growing need for
dementia support to help
both those living with the
disease and their informal
carers in a way which actively
promotes their wellbeing.
Our Dementia Support Service
offers a single point of contact
in the county with individual
and group support for those
experiencing the challenges
of coping with dementia.
Men in Sheds
With successful Sheds
already operating in Leicester
and Loughborough, we have
launched our latest Shed
in Oakham. Men in Sheds
offers a resource for men who
are at risk of social isolation
or loneliness, perhaps
after the loss of a partner
or just because they have
retired and miss the male
camaraderie of the workplace.
The Shed is a community
workshop at which men over
50 can meet and get involved
in member-led projects.
Participants (or “shedders”
as we call them) can form
new friendships, share skills
that they have and acquire
new ones too, as well as
gaining a sense of purpose
that may have been lost
following changes in their later
life. Our existing Shedders
A personalised six week
programme of intensive
support is available,
including information
report improved physical
and mental health as well as
better emotional wellbeing.
Already our Oakham shedders
have built work benches to use
in the Shed and wheelbarrow
planters for Oakham in
Bloom. Avid gardeners may
be interested to hear that
we’re also exploring how
best to develop a garden
on site. Whatever happens,
exciting times are ahead
for the shedders as they
take on new projects and
spread the news about the
project across the county.
If you want to pop along
and see what goes on,
the Shed is located at Rutland
County Museum, Catmose
Street, Oakham, LE15 6HW
and is open Wednesdays
(11am - 4pm) and Fridays
(10am – noon).
about local services and
how to access them.
We have a peer support
group for carers to provide
them with access to advice
and support about caring for
someone living with dementia
and the opportunity to share
experiences with other
carers; alongside this group
there is an activity group
for people with dementia.
The group meets at the
Rutland Community Hub,
Land’s End Way, Oakham,
LE15 6RB on the fourth
Could you
volunteer with us?
We have recently become part of the Rutland Community
Wellness Service – a partnership that is designed to enable
local voluntary organisations to work together more effectively
to meet the needs of the local population. Many services
and projects rely on the kind support of volunteers.
If you could spare some time to help older people in Rutland
please contact either the project staff listed below or our
Volunteer Administrator, Julia Day, on 0116 299 2256.
More information about our projects and services.
You can pick up a copy of our ‘Services and
Activities in Rutland’ leaflet in any of our locations
or make direct contact with one of local staff leading
the project/s most relevant to your needs.
