AUGUST 11-13, 2017 

This year’s Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 11th-13th. As 

in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, 

footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less 

than $100 from sales and use taxes, which could 

save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. 

Be wise! Here are some tips on maximizing this 

savings event: 

• Compare prices at different stores, which you can 

do online 

• Use coupons - in addition to the tax-free savings - 

whenever possible 

• If you’re using a business account to purchase 

your tax-free items, have an exemption certificate to 

prove you’re shopping for a student 

• Shop for more than just back-to-school items, like 

office supplies and work clothes or work uniforms

SPONSORED PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS 

Physical examinations will only be given to KISD student athletes 

participating in UIL activities grades 7-12. The UIL physical form will be 

the only physical form accepted. Although KISD recommends the use 

of your family doctor for the physical examination, the following mass 

screenings are available as an economical convenience for its patrons. 

KISD sponsored physical examinations will be performed by the Medical 

Colleges of Texas at a nominal fee of $25. 

KATY ISD TEAMS RANK HIGH IN THE 

GLOBAL DESTINATION IMAGINATION TOURNAMENT 

Three Katy ISD teams classified in the “Top 10 Teams” during the Global 

Destination Imagination Tournament, which took place in Knoxville, 

Tennessee on May 24 th -28 th . More than 1,400 teams representing 45 

states and 14 countries competed in the event to showcase their 

innovative challenge solutions. In total, five Katy ISD teams attended 

the tournament, including students from Griffin Elementary, Hayes 

Elementary, Beckendorff Junior High and Katy High School. 

In the Improv Challenge, 3-Peat, the Katy High School “Tie Di ers” finished 

in 10 th place. This placed them as the highest ranking team in the state of 

Texas, who was in attendance. Participating in the Scientific Challenge, 

Top Secret, the Hayes Elementary team “It’s Classified” finished in third 

place. The “Altos Kryptos,” from Griffin Elementary won second place in 

the same category.

SPORTS 

PICTURED AS OUR SPORTS HEADER FOR AUGUST: FO1 Revolution 16 Black Volleyball 

came away with a 3 rd place finish at the New Orleans Allstate Sugar Bowl Tournament. They 

are headed to Orlando, Florida to compete in the AAU Junior National Championships. 

These girls have had a fun season placing 1 st at Woodlands Revolution, 2 nd at Katy Elite, 

2 nd at FAST Warmup, 5 th at the Texas Fest in Dallas, 5 th at the Pacific Northwest Qualifier in 

Spokane, WA and 9 th at the Under Amour North East National Qualifier in Philadelphia. Let’s 

wish these girls continued success next month in Orlando.

PHOTO ON THE LEFT: Local Katy Girls from FO1 Volleyball Club won the Sapphire Division 

of the 44 th Annual AAU Girls 14U Junior National Volleyball Championships in Orlando, 

Florida. The girls finished the tournament with 8 straight victories, 4 in the last day alone. 

Representing Katy, are Myah Balnoschan, Karin Ilagan, Alyssa Reyher, Paige Henrick, Haley 

Weinstein, Madison Powell, Anika Lahoti, Mia Blum along with coaches Mike Kent and 

Jerrick Cabrales.

SWIM LESSONS: The Y has been teaching swim lessons for over 100 

years! All ages and ability levels welcome. Morning, evening, group and 

private sessions available. 

SPORTS & SPECIALTY CAMPS: Basketball, NFL Flag Football, Soccer, 

Volleyball, Tennis, Cheer, Dance, STEM and Lego Engineering camps 

are offered for ages 6-14. These camps are available various weeks 

throughout the summer and focus on a child’s specific interest. 

YMCA CHILD CARE 2017-18 REGISTRATION: Child Care provided at 

most Katy ISD elementary schools until 6:30 PM. Some schools offer 

both before and after school care. Please call or check online for specific 

school offerings and prices.

KATY AREA WRESTLING CLUB REGISTRATION 

Registration for the Katy Area Wrestling Club will open at the parents’ 

meeting, which is tentatively scheduled for September 12, 2017 at 6 PM 

at the wrestling room of Cinco Ranch High School. All male and female 

students, kindergarten through 8 th grade, are welcome and encouraged

AHFC SOCCER SUMMER CAMP SERIES 2017 

AHFC is pleased to offer the Summer Camp Series at multiple campuses 

in and around Houston. The club invites all interested players to the 

Canes Fundamental Camp (Ages 5-9) or the Canes Skills & Drills Camp 

(Ages 10-16). Please visit albionhurricanes.org to register and for more 

details about each particular campus. The camps will be offered in New 

Territory, Cy-Fair and Katy locations. All information can be found under

SOCCER SIGN UPS: KATY/FULSHEAR/WEST 

HOUSTON REGISTRATION - NOW OPEN! 

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the FALL Season. Games start on October 7, 2017. FFPS 

is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, 

FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater 

Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including 

one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive 

coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

games, played locally on Saturdays, October 7 th to December 2 nd . Our 

Katy league plays at George Bush Park - FFPS Soccer Complex (20150 

Westheimer Parkway). Our Fulshear League plays at Huggins Elementary 

(No. 1 Huggins Dr). Our West Houston League plays at Westside High

RUNNING CLUB 

The Katy Area Running Club is a 

501(c)3 non-profit corporation 

which exists to serve people 

living in and around Katy, Texas 

who have an interest in running. 

We are a community of people of all ages, backgrounds, heritages and 

abilities who share a common interest - running! Our focus is on group 

runs, having fun, socializing and sharing our knowledge and experience 

with our members and the public. We welcome all who are interested 

in joining us. We have a full calendar of runs, events and socials. We 

hold group runs every Saturday morning at the Sergeant Hatch Sports 

Park off the south I-10 feeder road just east of Barker Cypress Rd. On 

Tuesdays (5 AM and 6:30 PM) we meet at the Cinco Ranch Junior High 

Track for speedwork and on Thursday (6:30 PM) we meet at Crosspoint

TENNIS ORGANIZATION FOR THE KATY AREA 

Katy Area Tennis (KAT) is the newest, non-profit tennis organization 

meeting the needs of all tennis players in the Katy area. Our goal is to 

provide a wide range of programming for tennis players as well as to 

promote the game in the Katy area. Registration is currently open for a 

variety of leagues, ladders and tournaments that include singles, doubles

TRACK HOUSTON | YOUTH TRACK CLUB 

Track Houston is the nation’s largest and most successful youth track and 

field organization. Our goal is to assist interested boys and girls ages 6 

to18 years old in improving their physical fitness and mental stamina.

SUMMER READING CLUBS “Build a Better World” - 

Through August 31, 2017 

Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the 

summer to encourage reading among people of all ages. There is no 

charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs (SRC) and they are open to 

everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register 

at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the 

FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” 

image. When the online registration form has been completed, readers 

will then have their own online page on which to record their books or 

reading time. Prizes must be collected from the “primary library of use” 

that the reader indicated on the registration form. The last day to pick 

up awards is August 31 st . The Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by 

Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that support the 

county library system and the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a 

consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s 

summer-reading program materials for public libraries. 

SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN 

Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to 

come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting 

programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! 

Children are encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can 

and they will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read 

or have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive a 

bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil 

for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 

20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture 

of a builder’s block to be displayed in that branch library. The names of 

participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores 

that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a 

drawing scheduled in August at each library location. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE 

Area youth in grades 6 th -8 th can participate in the SRC by logging online 

the time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books 

as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of

Do you know someone doing a job search now or who may need to do 

so in the future? Kingsland Baptist Church is offering a Career Transition 

Workshop based on material written by John McDorman, Managing 

Partner of Transition Consulting. Over the years and across the nation, 

1,000s of people in transition have found it valuable to teach job seekers 

how to best use their time to shorten their job search. The material 

consists of 12 classes of approximately 1.5 - 2 hours each. 

Park in the parking lot behind Kingsland Baptist Church, located at 

20555 Kingsland Blvd. and use the door that is at the midpoint of all the 

buildings. There will also be signs or people to direct you. Classes meet in 

the Fellowship Hall at 6:30 PM every Thursday. The cost of the material

GIVE BACK - MENTOR A LOCAL JUVENILE 

Please become a positive adult role model for a child that has become 

involved with the Fort Bend juvenile justice system in our own community. 

We have many juveniles in need of a listening ear and encouragement

one! Mentors must be 21 years of age and willing to give a minimum
