●●● NEWS ROUND UP
CHIEF EXECUTIVE REPORT
AS THE year rapidly draws to a
close there are many challenges
that lie ahead for our industry in
the coming year. We need to be
ready to rise to the challenges that
separating from Europe will bring,
whatever they turn out to be.
We can already see pressures
caused by the drop in the value of
the pound against other currencies
and no-one seems to know where
it will end and, as most of our
members do not export their
expertise abroad, we are unable
to take advantage of this lower
exchange rate. Many members are
already bracing themselves against
increased production costs, which
at this time are most unwelcome.
Further challenges will appear
with the New Apprentice Levy
which every company with a
wage bill of over £3m will pay.
Whilst it is almost clear how new
companies in England will access
grant on this levy it is as yet
unclear in Scotland.
On the educational front
there are continued discussions
with the Scottish Qualifications
Authority regarding the Level 3
SVQ (now to be called the SCQF
Level 6/7). These are delicate
discussions which, if we lose
the debate, could impact on
apprenticeships going forward.
On a more positive note, we
have completed this year’s round
of wage negotiations which
have been promulgated to our
members.
Neil, our new National
Secretary, is settling in nicely
and has been a little surprised
at the number of different things
and issues that the Federation
is involved with. Any member
wishing to contact Neil can do so
through SDF HQ.
Next year’s convention will
be in October 27, 28, rather that
our usual March spot and again
will be held in Dalmahoy Hotel in
Edinburgh.
Finally, we’re here to help
whether it’s employment issues or
training operatives, just contact
SDF HQ.
To all our members, although
times may be difficult with many
uncertainties, please try and enjoy
the autumn season.
SPEED EQUALS PERFECTION WITH
MIRKA’S ABRANET
CONTINUING ITS ‘Abranet ®
Perfection’ marketing campaign
to raise awareness of the issue of
airborne dust emission associated
with sanding, Mirka is expanding
its message to cover speed and
efficiency. The extended campaign
is being communicated across print,
social media and digital platforms
using imagery that emphasises the
importance of Abranet as a fast
and effective abrasive solution that
assists businesses in saving time
and money, while still providing a
dust-free environment to work in.
The Abranet range has been
designed and developed to
work together with Mirka tools
such as the lightweight DEROS
sander for optimal dust removal,
which translates into improved
efficiency for businesses and better
environmental conditions for
customers and workers. Research
carried out at Mirka’s R&D centre
at its headquarters in Jeppo,
Finland, found that Abranet’s
hard wearing surface offers a
faster process and prevents the
abrasive from rapid or premature
wear, offering a product lifespan
many times longer than traditional
abrasives. This means fewer
consumables are needed, the work
environment stays much cleaner,
and a smooth, consistent, high
quality finish is achieved on a
cleaner surface.
Mirka’s total solution makes
sanding easier and more effective
for the user across multiple
applications, laboratory tests show
that Abranet addresses the dust
issue more comprehensively than
any other product. The amount
of dust in the air when machine
sanding with Abranet is 6,900
times less than when sanding
using traditional abrasives with
dust extraction. When Abranet
was compared to a traditional
6-hole sanding disc with a dust
extraction system, it proved itself to
be superior. The dust concentration
from Abranet was maximum
0.15mg/m 3 , while the corresponding
figure for the traditional sanding
disc was 1.6mg/m 3 .
Craig Daycock, managing
director of Mirka UK, says, “We are
committed to long-term investment
in both our solutions and the
training we provide to our users
when it comes to best practice.
The extension of the ‘Abranet
Perfection’ campaign has allowed
the business to reach out across
multiple social media platforms to
highlight the key benefits of the
Abranet range. The world’s original,
innovative net abrasive stands out
from the crowd for its performance,
speed and efficiency, delivering
a smooth consistent finish while
helping customers make time and
cost savings.”
CROWN TRADE STERACRYL MOULD INHIBITING PAINT – HELPING
TO TACKLE THE ISSUES OF ‘CONDENSATION SEASON’
WE ARE coming up to the time of
year where the ‘condensation season’
sets in, characterised by steamy
windows and dampness on walls.
If a client reports problems with
condensation in their property, you
can offer a solution to help manage
the issue with Crown Trade Steracryl
Mould Inhibiting Paint.
Available in Matt and Eggshell
finishes, this durable product
contains an effective fungicide,
specially developed to maintain
decorated surfaces by inhibiting the
development of mould growth on
the paint film.
Debbie Orr, Crown Paints’ Trade
Marketing Manager, said: “As the
condensation season starts to set in,
usually in October and November,
properties can be affected by
additional water around windows and
walls as temperatures start to drop.
“This combination of lower
temperatures - particularly in areas
where the efficiency of glazing,
insulation and ventilation needs to be
taken into consideration - can lead to
water droplets forming on surfaces.
“Over time, these wet areas can
provide a perfect breeding ground
which allow mould spores to form.
“Crown Trade Steracryl Mould
Inhibiting Paint has undergone
stringent fungal tests carried out to
the British Standard BS3900:G6.
“The acrylic eggshell system is
also washable, making it ideal for
use in kitchens and bathrooms
where condensation can be more
commonplace, so its ideal to help
tackle the issue.”
As well as the mould inhibiting
formulation, Crown Trade’s range of
Steracryl coatings include an antibacterial
product, ideal for areas
where hygiene is paramount. The
handy 2.5 litre pack size is ideal for
kitchens and bathrooms.
Crown Trade’s video, ‘The
Right Paint For The Job,’ available
to view at www.youtube.com/
watch?v=akysgI588P8
includes an insight into the
trusted technology behind both the
Crown Trade Steracryl Antibacterial
and Mould Inhibiting paints, along
with other performance systems in
the range, such as the premium high
technology coating Crown Trade
Clean Extreme.
GETTING THE best finish for
exterior trims is featured in the
third episode of the ‘This Is Sandtex
Kevin O’Donnell, Product
Trainer for Crown Paints, sets out
the solutions for wood, metal
and PVC-u using Sandtex Trade’s
extensive range in this latest
short film.
The video starts with on
overview of priming and
preparation and then gives
an insight into the different
requirements of various substrates.
The attributes of products in
the trims range, including Sandtex
Trade Flexigloss X-tra, Sandtex
Trade Eggshell X-tra and Sandtex
Trade Metalgloss X-tra, are also
explored.
Sharon Smith, Sandtex Trade
as window frames and guttering
are an integral part of any exterior
redecoration.
“As part of the Sandtex trade
system approach, specific products
for trims are formulated to provide
superior protection, as well as a
fantastic finish.
“This latest video offers a great
way to show how this approach
works and provides painters and
decorators with time-proven and
trusted coatings that offer optimum
performance.”
Five videos are being launched
throughout 2016 in the ‘This Is
Sandtex Trade’ series, to help
painters and decorators build up
a complete picture on exterior
painting.
They build on the content
already provided on Sandtex
Trade’s website www.sandtextrade.
co.uk and can be accessed easily
with a fully responsive format for
all media devices including mobiles,
tablets and computers.
All the videos include a widerange
of information presented in
the form of studio demonstrations
and on site situations.
The first video was launched
earlier this year and addressed
the topic of preparation and
pre-treatment, while the second
featured the different types of
masonry paints.
The first, second and third
episodes in the ‘This Is Sandtex
the Sandtex Trade website as well
as the brand’s YouTube channel
https://www.youtube.com/user/
SandtexTrade
The videos, as well as the
website, build on a wealth of
digital content already available
from the brand, including PaintSpec
Finder ® .
Available at
www.crownpaintspec.co.uk
PaintSpec Finder ® delivers instant
and technically-detailed plans
for exterior and interior projects,
with a user-friendly format which
filters through a great deal of
technical information to pinpoint
exactly what products - from the
professional brands of Crown Trade
and Sadolin, as well as Sandtex
Trade - are needed for chosen
projects.
PaintSpec Finder ® then pulls
together the specifications into a
report, with a personalised cover
sheet showing the customer’s
name, the project and the user’s
own details, which is then all ready
for decorators to hand to their
client or add to their tender or
reference documents.
Also of special interest to
decorators and their clients is the
Crown MyRoomPainter app to
investigate colour options.
This facility is designed to
enable tradespeople to offer
instant schemes while out on site
using a smartphone or mobile
tablet to show how any palette
will look in situ.
Available for free download,
the Crown MyRoomPainter app
is designed to visualise how any
room will look in any spectrum of
shades.
It also contains a colourmatching
function, a handy paint
calculator and an inspirational
library. Projects can be saved and
shared online too, enabling you
to give your clients the chance
to consider their options before
selecting a scheme.
By using the app, decorators can
take pictures of a room and show
their clients exactly how a finished
project will look in whatever shade
is chosen.
The Crown MyRoomPainter
app is available to download free
MIRKA’S CORDLESS SANDERS HIT THE SPOT
MIRKA IS expanding its power
tools range with the addition of
the first small, brushless, batterydriven,
spot repair, cordless sanders
that have both orbital and random
orbital movements. The new
AOS-B 130NV and AROS-B 150 NV
sanders are suitable for multiple
sanding operations including
finessing, and Corian ® sanding
applications, producing a highly
quality, consistently smooth finish,
maximising productivity.
The AOS and AROS are both
powered by a Mirka BPA 10820
battery pack, which has a full
charge time of 40 minutes or
less, reducing tool downtime
and increasing efficiency. When
fully charged, it provides the user
with economical and consistent
performance for the duration of the
sander’s battery life, which can last
up to 16 hours when used in spot
repair applications.
The rpm on the sanders can be
adjusted in steps from 4,000 rpm
up to 8,000 rpm and, if required,
can be locked to prevent accidental
rpm changes. The easy-to-use trigger
system stops the sander when the
fingers are removed from the trigger,
but it will continue to stay in an
active mode for a short time before
it automatically shuts off.
The tools’ lightweight design
allows them to be moved easily
from job to job for more efficient
use of the workspace available,
while their compact ergonomic
design provides users with a
comfortable grip that will enable
them to operate the products
for a long period of time, while
delivering good control over the
sanding process. The low noise and
vibration levels reduce arm fatigue,
minimising the risk of Hand Arm
Vibration Syndrome.
Their innovative features also
include an easy attachment for
the backing pad with the help of a
‘quicklock’ system, resulting in less
downtime when changing abrasives.
The new Mirka cordless tools
come complete with spare battery,
charger and two quicklock backing
pads: PSA Hard (mounted on the
machine) and Grip Soft. The tools
are covered by the Mirka 2+1 year
warranty.
Pete Sartain, industrial sales
manager for Mirka UK, says, “The
additions of the AOS and AROS
to our product portfolio is part
of our continued investment in
a tool range that is innovative,
meets the challenges that our
customers deal with on a regular
basis and provides them with
most convenient solutions for spot
repairs and a multitude of other
sanding operations. While they are
small, they will have big impact in
making the users’ jobs easier, no
matter the size of the task.”
●●● NEWS ROUND UP
JOHNSTONE’S SCHEME LIGHTS UP RESIDENTS’ HOMES
JOHNSTONE’S TRADE’S
decorating allowance scheme
has helped more than 650 North
West Leicestershire District Council
residents create brighter interiors
for their homes in the past three
years.
The council started using the
scheme in December 2013, and
in doing so gave its residents
unprecedented opportunity
to access quality products to
help them settle into their new
accommodation.
The scheme allows housing
associations and local authorities to
provide residents with decorating
materials from Johnstone’s
Trade’s network of more than 190
Decorating Centres nationwide, via
three distinct methods.
Of the three methods -
decorating packs, monetary
vouchers and points - North West
Leicestershire District Council have
utilised the pack schemes.
The council has also taken
advantage of an innovation from
Johnstone’s Trade in the form of its
comprehensive online management
system. The system enables the
council to instantly activate and
cancel packs, have constant
visibility of spend levels and see
which internal member of staff has
administered a pack and which
resident has redeemed it.
It also has robust reporting
functionality, which includes data
on pack redemptions, expired
packs, and order collections and
deliveries. In addition, there’s
a dedicated help area where
Johnstone’s can provide support
and assistance on managing the
scheme.
Andrew Wallace, principal
housing management team leader
at North West Leicestershire
District Council, said: “We feel
that Johnstone’s Trade decorating
packs have been great value for
money, simple to process and that
they have offered excellent options
which allow us to be flexible on
behalf of our residents.
“Johnstone’s Trade talked us
through the requirements and
options for our packs. Our residents
have benefited hugely from the
packs – they can decorate their
homes with quality products and
they feel as if we are providing
them with the right resources and
valuing them as tenants.”
NEW HQ FOR PROUD STOKE BUSINESS
NOVUS PROPERTY Solutions has
marked six decades of business in
Stoke-on-Trent with the opening of
its brand new headquarters at Five
Towns House.
The national maintenance,
refurbishment and new build
contractor first moved to Stoke
in the forties and has occupied
purpose-built facilities in Fenton
since 1957, but the company’s
growth in the last few years has
seen its staff outgrow the original
facility and for a number of years
teams of staff have occupied a
multitude of buildings in the vicinity.
The family-owned business
engaged in an extensive
consultation process with Novus
staff during the design and
planning stages of the new facility,
which will house 100 operational
and core service staff.
The company has created a
modern, versatile workspace
that manages to incorporate the
heritage of the firm and its ties to
the local area.
The building is fully climate
controlled, features energy-saving
LED lighting throughout, and
has inspirational images of local
enterprise, innovation and sporting
heroes displayed throughout its
meeting rooms.
Stuart Seddon, chairman of
Novus Property Solutions, said: “We
wanted to modernise our ways of
working and create an attractive
environment in a better-equipped
facility that would enable all our
local teams to collaborate together
under one roof.
“The new building is the head
office of our business and we are
proud of our long association
with the Stoke-on-Trent area. Our
new home will help to further
strengthen our reputation when
clients come to visit and see the
breadth of our expertise.
“There’s no guarantee we won’t
outgrow our new offices, but our
shareholders have a long history
in this part of the country, and we
have never considered moving
away from the area.”
AUTUMN AND WINTER SHADES ON SHOW WITH CROWN PAINTS
COLOUR INFLUENCES
CROWN PAINTS has revealed
the latest colour trends, offering
inspiration for the autumn and
winter months ahead.
Under the paint manufacturer’s
Colour Influences programme,
designers and colour experts have
curated three colour palettes for
autumn and winter.
‘Out of the Dark’, ‘Skyscapes’
and ‘Faded Berries,’ provide a
wealth of ideas for decorators
looking to give their clients some
ideas and inspiration regarding the
latest on-trend shades.
The first of the three palettes,
‘Out of the Dark’ features a
dramatic and daring edge - relying
on the use of dark colours to make
a strong colour statement, and then
applying an expanse of contrasting
tone to turn it on its head.
Black and charcoal grey are
dominant in this look, forming solid
blocks of tone that are interrupted
by strong blasts of bright yellow,
pink and orange.
The second palette ‘Skyscapes’,
is inspired by a natural landscape,
and uses layers of tonal colour to
create an ethereal, magical look –
and it illustrates just how versatile
blue can be.
Accents within the trend include
sophisticated grey and chalky
neutrals, which perfectly enhance
the blue gradations and offer a
subtle nod to clouds, mist and
rocks.
The final palette from Crown
Paints’ Colour Influences autumn/
winter 2016 is entitled ‘Faded
Berries,’ which sees nature take on
a robust and moody persona.
This atmospheric influence
captures the intensity of nature as
it matures and evolves, evoking a
landscape characterised by wild
heather and untamed foliage.
By setting the richness of deep
heather tones against mossy and
grassy greens, the palette takes
on a decidedly untamed aesthetic,
celebrating a nature that is faded
and wild rather than restrained and
pristine.
The berry and green tones are
complemented by neutral accents
which bring a softness to the
overall look.
Every year, Crown Paints invites
its panel of designers, colourists
and trend forecasters to identify
the influences that will define
the colour landscape for the year
ahead.
The group discusses global
events, social and economic
changes as well as fashion and
interior design trends to identify
patterns for future influences and
ultimately learn what will drive
customers’ tastes and behaviour in
the year ahead.
The colours are available in many
of the high quality, professional
products within the company’s
Crown Trade, Sadolin and Sandtex
Trade brands, which are all crafted
with over 200 years of knowledge,
experience and passion.
HR EXPERT HAS HIGH HOPES FOR NOVUS
STUART CAVANAGH has said he
wants to make Novus Property
Solutions “an employer of choice
in the industry” in his new role
as the company’s head of human
resources.
Having previously worked as HR
director at The Freeman Company
– the world’s largest event and
exposition firm – Stuart has
brought 16 years of multi-sector
HR experience to Novus.
The 36-year-old, who was born
in Manchester, has HR experience
in security, retail and the public
sector, but he has insisted that
Novus requires its own distinct
culture that fits with the ethos of
the business and its staff.
He said: “I don’t believe in
12 DECORATING MATTERS
super imposing another company’s
culture and model. I need to find
the blueprint that works for Novus.
“Our story is compelling and I
want to make us an employer of
choice in the industry.
“I have always built HR
teams that are welcomed in
the business and seen as a
central support, and that is my
aim with this team. We have
some interesting projects in the
pipeline that I can’t wait to get
started on that will help Novus
and our people.”
Stuart began his new role on
August 22nd and has already
helped to support the company’s
move to a new head office at Five
Towns House in Stoke.
He said that Novus’ long
history as a family-owned
business was part of what drew
him to the firm.
“Novus offers the opportunity
to help realign people’s goals
with the wider business plan. I
have always liked family-owned
businesses as the values they
hold mirror my personal ones.
“The role is not with out
challenges, as I work with the
business to build the culture and
ensure that people are central to
everything that we do.”
SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED
FOR APPRENTICE AWARD
THREE OF the country’s most
promising young tradespeople have
been shortlisted to win the Novus
Property Solutions Apprentice of the
Year award.
The award-winning maintenance,
refurbishment and new build
contractor has a long history of
developing successful painters,
decorators, builders and managers,
and three of its current crop of
apprentices have been singled out as
being bound for great things.
Two of the shortlisted candidates,
James Riley and Luke Mulliner, are
third year painting and decorating
apprentices based at Novus’
Wrexham office, and they will be
hoping to follow in the footsteps
of the 2016 Apprentice of the Year,
Daniel Holdcroft, who is also a
painter and decorator.
James and Luke are joined on
the 2017 shortlist by Reece Jones,
a third year multi-trade apprentice
from Birmingham. Reece was chosen,
along with James, to represent Novus
Property Solutions on humanitarian
trips to Slovenia in 2014 and 2015,
and all three Apprentice of the Year
candidates have taken advantage of
the many unique opportunities that
being a Novus apprentice opens up.
Novus has taken on a record
number of new apprentices this year,
but James, Luke and Reece have
impressed the company’s judging
panel with the level of commitment
and dedication shown to their chosen
professions since being taken on as
apprentices.
James Riley said: “It is an honour
to have been shortlisted for this
award at a company where there are
so many talented apprentices.
“As apprentices, we can see the
clear career progression available to
us at Novus, because so many of the
company’s managers and directors
started out in the same position
we’re in now.
“We know that hard work and
dedication to every single part of our
jobs can lead to something great
in the future. That’s what being an
apprentice is all about.”
The winner of the 2017 Apprentice
of the Year award, who will be
announced at the Novus Excellence
Awards in February, will become an
ambassador for Novus during 2017.
SADOLIN SUPERDEC AMBASSADOR PUTS COLOUR
OUTDOORS IN PERSPECTIVE
DECORATORS CAN get a unique
insight into the use of colour
outdoors in a new video produced
by Sadolin.
Dedicated Sadolin Superdec user
Gary Davies has gone on camera
to talk about his passion for colour
using the premium wood protection
product.
Gary, the owner of Lyme Bay
Cabins - which manufactures
and installs quality log cabin
garden buildings across the South
West - shares his experiences
of bringing colour to life in a
short film available to view at
https://youtu.be/oXxPjdcqwDU
Gary is a strong advocate
of Sadolin Superdec and, since
launching Lyme Bay Cabins five
years ago, has specified its use to
all his clients.
He believes the superiority of
the self-priming product in term of
its application and finish, coupled
with outstanding colour choice and
longevity, make it the only product
of choice.
Gary said: “There’s a growing
focus on really defining spaces
outdoors and putting great
personality into projects, and for
this the choice of shades is really
important.
The video showcases a number
of projects carried out in Devon,
and includes an insight into how
the colour choices were made at
each site.
“It enables people to create their
own unique buildings with great
charm and great character.
“Whether making an outdoor
building really bold and beautiful,
or just using a tone that blends
into the surroundings, Sadolin
Superdec has got fantastic colours
within the range.
“The options are absolutely
endless and the quality of the
product means the colour is going
to last for the long-term.”
Available in over 300 shades,
Sadolin Superdec is renowned
for its comprehensive colour
palette, as well as its outstanding
protective qualities, which
together make it one of the most
popular ranges within the Sadolin
brand for decorators.
Sadolin Superdec offers a highly
durable opaque finish which
erodes naturally by weathering,
ensuring the coating remains
flexible and resists cracking,
peeling and flaking.
This flexibility enables Sadolin
Superdec to offer up to 8 years’
protection against the elements.
The product is also self-priming
and undercoating, thus reducing
the need for an extra product on
new wood. It also requires little
preparation, and can be applied
over previously decorated surfaces.
TOOLED UP WITH KNOWLEDGE FOR BETTER
MAINTENANCE
MIRKA UK is raising awareness of the
importance of regular and consistent
maintenance of its tools to help improve their
lifespan and maximise overall performance,
through a series of competitions and advice slots
from its team of experts across its social media
platforms.
The top tips will be tailored to multiple
sectors including painting and decorating,
woodworking, and industrial. They will highlight
the common issues associated with tool damage
and wear, and will provide users with simple but
effective solutions to address tool maintenance
efficiently.
Pete Sartain, national sales manager of
Mirka UK, says, “Tools are the lifeblood of any
business, so when they are poorly maintained
users risk them succumbing to mechanical
issues or producing a less efficient performance.
In turn, this can lead to a drop in income and
profits, and, in the worst case scenario, a loss of
livelihood if users don’t look after them correctly.
Bringing together our years of experience at the
cutting-edge of tool and abrasive technology,
these competitions and top tips will provide our
customers with simple solutions that will enable
their tools to perform to an optimum level for
longer.”
Pete Sartain, national sales manager –
Industrial of Mirka UK, provides his advice for
keeping tools in tip top condition for longer
• Register your tools at www.mirka.com/uk to
protect them with Mirka’s warranty in the event
of damage or mechanical issues.
• Regular checks should be carried out before
using any tool to ensure that it is safe to use.
Remember excessive vibration can cause HAV
(Hand arm Vibration) always check to ensure the
correct backing pad is fitted. If any issues are
found, make sure they are fixed by a certified
repairer.
Sanders
• Constantly check for worn or damaged
backing pads as even the slightest amount
of wear can cause a significant increase in
vibration levels of the tool.
• On the PROS or DEROS machines, if you
intend to use an interface pad (5mm / 10mm),
you should remove the backing pad and insert
the grub screw that comes in the box with the
tool into the remaining threaded hole beneath
the pad. This will counter balance the weight of
the interface pad and reduce the vibration of the
tool when in use.
• Minimise the dragging of cables and hoses
along the ground as this can cause damage to
both and result in having to replace them.
• Ensure that the compressor is working at
optimum level and regularly check for water in
the air lines to reduce the risk of corrosion of the
metal parts within the air tool’s motor.
Dust Extractors
• Ensure that the dust extractor is being used
with a Mirka Fleece dust bag, Extractors used
without a dust bag can cause damage to the
machine and release fine particles in the air.
• Check the level of the dust bag on a regular
basis and replace when two thirds full.
• Periodically check and clean the extraction
filter, this can be done easily using the push and
clean filter cleaning mechanism on all Mirka
extractors.
● ● ● COVER STORY
XVLP – VERSATILE SPRAYING
PROCESS FOR SMALL PROJECTS
HVLP stands for High Volume Low Pressure, and,
as the term suggests, involves a spraying process
which is characterised by spraying at high
volume and under low pressure. Over recent
years, WAGNER has further developed this
process into XVLP - “EXtra Volume Low Pressure”,
extending the advantages of the HVLP system
even further through the extra high volume of
air. XVLP is the ideal spraying process for smaller
projects and repair jobs. The XVLP system
combines the positive characteristics of low
pressure with those of a high pressure process,
i.e. less overspray and fine atomisation mean
less loss of material, an environmentally-friendly
spraying process and a fine spray pattern. A turbo
blower generates the atomising air which flows
through an air hose into the paint container
on the spray gun where it builds up pressure.
This delivers the coating material through the
standpipe to the nozzle and atomises it with the
remaining air in such a way that when leaving the
air nozzle, the pressure is considerably reduced.
This results, on the one hand, in fine atomisation
to satisfy the toughest painting demands, and
on the other hand, in significantly reduced
overspray thanks to the low pressure. This
process reduces loss of material particles which
means that up to 30% of material can be saved.
The XVLP system’s wide range of applications
and user-friendly operation will appeal even
to painters who are not yet using spraying
systems, as well as to professionals looking for a
reliable spraying system for daily on-site use in
renovation projects of up to 50 square meters.
Part 2: XVLP – easy to use
In addition to paints and varnish, the XVLP
system also enables interior wall paints to be
applied effortlessly. This is possible thanks to
the Click & Paint system and to three spray
attachments which are tailored to the different
materials and differ mainly in terms of the nozzle
shape. For example, high-viscosity materials
are applied using the Visco slot nozzle while
low-viscosity paints are applied using the round
nozzle. So the device can be quickly adapted to
suit the paint material.
Fig. 2: For optimum adjustment to the respective materials,
various spraying attachments are available and can be
quickly click-fitted onto the unit.
Coating internal walls
The WallSpray attachment is ideal when
coating internal walls. The surfaces are prepared
in a similar way to classic paint applications using
brushes and rollers as long as the device settings
are optimally adjusted to the requirements of
the paint material. For this reason, the surface
specialist, WAGNER, recommends carrying out
a test on a piece of cardboard before spraying
the walls. In this way, the width of the spray
jet and the volume of air and material can be
adjusted to your personal working speed, and
you can find the ideal setting, producing as little
overspray as possible
Fig. 3: By carrying out a test spray on a piece of cardboard,
you can find the device’s optimum settings.
It may be necessary to dilute the paint
material. It is even simpler to use a material
that has already been tested by the device
manufacturer. Users can find material test
reports for each device at www.wagner-group.
com/sprayguide . In addition to optimum
device settings, information about whether or
not, and how, to dilute the material can also be
found there.
To ensure even application of the paint,
always move the spray gun at an equal distance
and vertically in relation to the wall. A distance
of 15 to 20 cm is ideal for wall paints.
Fig. 1: How the XVLP spraying process works
22 DECORATING MATTERS
Fig. 4: During application, the user should always spray
vertically in relation to the wall.
Move the gun evenly, either horizontally or
vertically, over the wall surface. While doing so,
make sure that the sprayed stripes overlap slightly.
Cross-coating is ideal; to change spray levels, simply
turn the nozzle 90 degrees.
Corners and edges can easily be sprayed during
the work flow which is a significant advantage
compared to using brushes and rollers when they
need to be pre-coated. If only coating one wall or
spraying around a door or window, experienced
users can achieve accurate edges using a piece of
cardboard as a protective cover, without any need
for masking.
When taking a break, the material container can
be opened slightly to prevent overpressure from
building up. Before use, simply tighten back up again
and continue spraying.
Fig. 5: Corners and edges don’t have to be pro-coated.
Spraying paints and varnishes
The StandardSpray attachment, included in the
scope of delivery, is used for applying paint, while
the FineSpray attachment is used to apply varnishes
and extremely low-viscosity materials. To ensure
that the paint adheres well, lightly sand the object
to be coated. Depending on the material, the ideal
spraying distance is between 3 and 20 cm. Start by
coating corners, edges and recesses before applying
the material to the surfaces.
Start spraying away from the object to be
sprayed and do the same when changing direction
to avoid creating thicker layers of material. Since
paint applied too thickly can cause drips, it is
better to spray thinly twice than too thickly once;
this improves surface quality. After spraying, allow
the paint or varnish to dry in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions.
Fig. 7: Always start changing direction away from the object
to be coated.
Particularly with paint surfaces, the XVLP
technology generates an extremely fine spray
pattern which it is not possible to achieve with
brushes and rollers. In addition, coating using the
fine spray system makes the surface clearly more
resistant to environmental influences. Repair jobs
can be achieved quickly and easily on pre-sprayed
surfaces as the texture remains consistent.
After each use, thoroughly rinse the spray
attachment with water
or a solvent. The device
manufacturer also
recommends regularly
lubricating the nozzle seal
and using a brush to remove
any remaining paint after
each use.
The practical Can
Adapter is a very userfriendly
addition which
enables paints to be applied
directly from the original
container. The adapter can
be screwed easily onto
each of the different XVLP
spraying attachments.
It is compatible with all
Fig. 8: To clean, dismantle the spray attachment into its
individual parts and clean thoroughly with a cleaning brush
and solvent. Lubricate the nozzle seal to keep it supple.
standard 750 ml paint cans (maximum dimensions
Ø = 102 mm, h = 119 mm) and 1000 ml paint cans
(maximum dimensions Ø = 112 mm, h = 132 mm).
When working with the Can Adapter, there is
no need to transfer the material into the spray
attachment container, and opened paint can be
stored in the original container.
The main advantage for professional users is
that this system saves an enormous amount of time
compared to applying materials by hand with a
brush or roller.
● ● ● CROWN TRADE APPRENTICE DECORATOR OF THE YEAR
TOP APPRENTICES READY TO
CONTEST NATIONAL TITLE
THE NAMES have been revealed of the talented
apprentices who’ll battle it out to be crowned
best painter and decorator in the country.
The annual Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator
of the Year competition promotes emerging talent
by acting as a showcase for skills.
Heats are held throughout the UK and eight
students have now emerged to compete for the
national title and a £1,000 first prize.
The three-day event will take place at The Skills
Show, one of the biggest events in the painting
and decorating calendar, to be held at the NEC in
Birmingham on November 17-19.
And three of the finalists will know precisely
what to expect as they’ll be making their second
successive appearance on the big stage.
Stefan Hubble, Ryan Chamberlain and Amanda
Conner narrowly missed out in last year’s final
which was won by Ben Deer, from Dorset.
Stefan, the former Vision West Nottinghamshire
College student, now working full-time for
Sharpline Decorators in Mansfield, is hoping to go
one better this time.
The 27-year-old said: “I was runner-up last
year and was pleased I did so well, but I was
very nervous which didn’t help. Hopefully, that
experience will help me in this year’s final.
“I did really well at college and won through
the regional heat, so I know I have the skills – it’s
just a matter of applying them in the right way.
“If I can do that, I’ve got a big chance, but
I’ve no doubt there’ll be seven other contestants
thinking the same thing.
“The competition is fantastic as it encourages
apprentices to show their skills on a national
stage. I’m delighted to be in the final again and
really looking forward to it.”
Third year Shrewsbury College of Art &
Technology student Amanda, aged 25, from
Telford, has set her sights on victory too.
She said: “I feel a lot more confident this year,
mainly because I know roughly what to expect,
and I think I have a real shot at the title.
“My speed let me down a little last year, so I’ll
be more aware of my timings and it should be ok.
“I want to do a heritage course, which will
give me the chance to maintain stately homes
and vintage cottages, or set up a painting and
decorating business with my dad and this
competition will help me along the way.”
Ryan, aged 20, from Ushaw Moor in Durham,
has just finished a Level Three NVQ at New
College in the county.
He said: “Last year’s final was an amazing
experience. I met a lot of new people, learned
new tricks of the trade and it’s great to be
26 DECORATING MATTERS
involved again.
“I know what to expect this time and I think
that might help me, but I’ll just do my best.”
But the final will be a first for the likes of
Jessica Heath, who’s about to start her third
year at Barnsley College where she’s also an
apprentice.
The 19-year-old, from Huddersfield, said: “I
found the heat quite challenging and I’m sure the
final will be even tougher, but it’s good fun.
“I didn’t have anyone to train me for the
competition, so I did well to come through it. I’m
not too sure how I’ll get on, but it should be a
great experience.”
Another of the finalists is Philip Orme, from
Devonport in Plymouth.
The 24-year-old attends City College in
Plymouth and works for a company called
Decorative Finishes in the city.
He said: “I’m really excited to be taking part in
a fantastic competition at a national level.
“The heat was tough enough and I know I’ll be
up against stiff competition, but I’ll definitely give
it my best shot.
“I’m hoping it could be a springboard for me
and my ambition to run my own business one day.”
Patrick Dinham, from Penrith in Cumbria, also
believes the competition will provide a boost to
his career.
The 20-year-old completed a Level Two NVQ at
Carlisle College in June and has been with Sissons
Decorators in Penrith for two and a half years.
He said: “The competition has already been a
great experience and the final will help develop
my skills and knowledge in the trade even further.
“I hope to one-day start a business with my
brother and I’m sure this will help me along
the way.”
Ayla Foulis, aged 24, is feeling confident of her
chances in the final.
The third year Fife College apprentice, from
Dunfermline, said: “I found the heat pretty
straight forward to be honest.
“I was in another competition previously so I
kind of know what to expect. I think I can do well
in the final, but we’ll see.
“Winning it would be a fantastic stepping
stone for me. I’m thinking of taking an interior
design course in future and want to set up on my
own one day.”
Lewys Rawlings, from Wrexham, a student at
Coleg Cambria in North East Wales, makes up the
final eight.
Competitors in each regional heat were
challenged to complete three complex tasks
designed to test the quality of their technique and
time management.
Kevin O’Donnell, Product Trainer at Crown
Paints and Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator
of the Year Competition Manager, said: “This
year’s project created a true test of skills, time
management and ability to work under pressure.
“It required a great deal of skill and the
expertise of those who have made the final really
shone through.
“They’ll need to reproduce that great work and
more to win the title because the quality of the
competition has been very high and there’ll be
some excellent talent on show.”
The Skills Show is an influential training and
careers event featuring more than 50 trade-based
competitions in which the ‘best of the best’ in
each sector battle for the national title.
The annual event, which attracted almost
80,000 visitors last year, is also the route to the
acclaimed ‘Skills Olympics’ – Worldskills - which
takes place every two years.
Mr O’Donnell added: “The finalists will need all
of their powers of concentration for the final.
“For apprentices at the start of their career, the
pressure is immense as they’ll be in the spotlight for
three days and undertaking an even more complex
project which must be completed in 19 hours.
“But they’ve already shown the potential to
perform at the highest level of their trade and it’s
a huge chance for them to show their skills to a
huge audience.”
Debbie Orr, Marketing Manager for Crown Paints’
trade brands, said: “As a business, we understand
the importance of investing in and developing the
next generation of industry professionals.
“That’s why Crown Trade has been proud to
organise and sponsor the Crown Trade Apprentice
Decorator of the Year competition for more than
37 years.
“The competition touches the lives of hundreds
of apprentices at the start of their careers,
encourages them to strive for excellence in
their craft and reach the highest professional
standards. It’s a crucial contest to win in the
industry as it is the only competition associated
with a national body, the Construction Industry
Training Board (CITB).
“For that reason it is seen as a real badge of
honour to win in the trade and the contestants
File: 213030-4-15DM JV Barrett (Peelaway)
Ad size: A4 1/2L (185mm wide x 130mm high)
really push to be the best.
“It’s hugely rewarding to see competitors start
out on a journey which will end up with one of
them being officially named the best painter and
decorator in the UK at The Skills Show.”
“The contest is also a key part of Crown Paints
ongoing programme to help address the skills
gap, which will be a major focus for the sector
over the coming years.
“We hope it raises the profile of the industry
overall - not just to apprentice decorators, but to
● ● ● AIRLESS SPRAYING
THE STEP TO GREATER EFFICIENCY
HAS NEVER BEEN SO SMALL
PAINTING jobs become easier thanks to
airless sprayers in three ways: work goes much
faster, finish work is noticeably better and it is
far less fatiguing.
An airless sprayer utilises a pump rather than
compressed air – hence the name ‘airless’. The
paint is pumped directly from a can or bucket,
and then is pushed by the pump through the
small opening in the spray nozzle. This creates a
fan-shaped spray pattern of small droplets that
allows you to apply the paint much faster than
with a paint brush or roller. An airless device
enables flawless application of paint, ensuring a
very smooth and attractive finish.
Painting with an airless device is less tiring.
New paint doesn’t have to be added constantly,
as with traditional tools. Also, there is no strain
on the painter’s wrists and shoulders so they
don’t hurt at the end of the day.
Graco’s GX line makes it possible for all
professionals to experience the benefits of
Airless spraying. Airless painters already know
they can finish more jobs quicker with a better
finish, but the GX line allows transferring
these benefits into even more jobs – not only
big exterior jobs, but small interior renovation
jobs as well.
“The GX 21 is excellent for use in the
residential apartments where I mainly work.
Not only does it work fast, but the painting
quality is also first-class. I would recommend
the GX 21 to all painting specialists who do
a lot of interior projects,” says Rosario Rani,
owner of Décorani in Italy.
The GX exists in two models: GX FF and
GX 21. The GX FF (19 tip support, 1,5 liter, 7,5
meter hose) is equipped with a hopper to spray
fine finish jobs and small colour changes. The
reduced ‘wet section’ allows spraying one liter of
paint. The GX 21 (21 tip support, 1,8 liter, 15 meter
hose) absorbs paint directly out of the buckets,
optimized to paint walls and ceilings.
28 DECORATING MATTERS
First winner is announced
With the launch of this airless sprayer, Graco
also launched an innovative tool that lets painters
customise the GX FF and win it.
Ralf Metze is the first to win a customised GX.
He is a painter for 29 years already and loyal to
Graco. He has been working with Graco machines
from the moment he started as a painter. The
company he works for owns six of them: four
MarkV and one GX 21. They focus primarily on
new-build and large projects.
Ralf used the GX for the first time when
renovating a shopping centre in Mönchengladbach,
Germany. Its hallway needed to be repainted.
This meant a lot of angles and corners, but also
keeping in mind the lighting on the ceiling. Ralf was
impressed by the machine. Especially the speed
and ease of use are the greatest advantage for him.
“I participated just for fun and never thought I
could win,” Ralf explains. He shared his design on
social media, mainly on his Facebook timeline and
in the group “Maler und Lackierer mit Herz und
Seele” that he is part of.
How it works
The GX Customiser contest is still on going.
On www.graco-gx.com it is simple to win a
customised GX in a few steps. First, participants
can choose a favourite colour and pattern or
upload their own photo. Then, they have to
share their creation with everyone they know
and encourage them to vote on it.
Top combo
There’s no need to argue that airless spraying
has a lot of benefits compared to using a brush
or a roller: contractors save a lot of time on their
paint jobs and get a nicer, more even finish. But
they might actually be looking for exactly the
finish that a roller provides. Or their projects
don’t justify masking preparation time required for
overspray, but they still value the same speed and
flexibility that airless technology provides.
Graco’s JetRoller is the perfect solution for
contractors looking for a flexible lightweight
tool designed to dramatically speed up their
paint roller projects. This accessory is available
in combination with the GX, which results in
higher efficiency, a better finish and more working
comfort. It enables contractors to combine the
quality of rolling with the speed of spraying,
whenever they want.

● ● ● EXTERIOR WOOD FINISHES
NEW POLYVINE EXTERIOR WOOD FINISHES
DELIVER PERFORMANCE SUPERIOR TO
ANYTHING ELSE IN THE MARKET
BRITISH paint, varnish and wood
care manufacturer, Polyvine has
launched a new professional
exterior wood finishes range
which is VOC-free, quick-drying
and which has the highest oils
solids content of any product in
the market. This makes it the best
formula for long term durability
and appearance retention
available in the UK.
The seven product range is
made from 100% oil solids. This
refers to the minute oil particle
content undiluted by other
materials, which ensures thorough
coverage, long lasting protection,
durability of finish, appearance
retention and low maintenance.
Oil solid content in all
competitive wood care products
is circa 50% at the maximum with
many being less than that. This
gives the new Polyvine range an
enormous performance advantage
against anything else in the
exterior wood care market.
Ensuring appearance retention
of up to five years as opposed
to the six months to one year
offered by competitors, the
Polyvine range also guarantees
excellent water repellence, low
odour, the flexibility to mitigate
against blistering and peeling,
UV filters which prevent fading
and weathering and microporous
breathability to prevent mould,
mildew, algae and fungal attack.
The range comprises:
• Exterior wood oil in a
translucent finish
• Exterior woodstain oil in a
silky sheen finish and eleven
colours
• Antislip oil
• Exterior wood varnish in satin
and dead flat finishes
• Exterior woodstain in silky
satin finish and eight colours
• Hickson Décor wood stain in
translucent satin finish and
thirteen colours
• Hickson Décor waxcoat water
repellent
The range benefits from
attractive all new tin designs in
sizes from 500ml to 2.5 litres.
RRPs start from £9.74.
HYDROLOC TECHNOLOGY MAKES
DECORATING EASIER WITH DUNLOP
PRO DÉCOR
EVER wondered what makes Dunlop Pro
Décor fillers and smoothers stand out from
the crowd?
Dunlop Pro Décor, unlike other brands,
utilises ground-breaking Hydroloc
technology to help decorators achieve a
superior finish in a faster time than ever
before.
Unique because the mix water is used as
part of a chemical reaction that dries the
filler, Hydroloc is unlike other products that
dry via water evaporation.
This means the filler dries evenly
throughout, regardless of thickness, within at
least 24 hours. In fact some products, such as
Dunlop Rapid Repair Mortar with Hydroloc
and Rapid Rescue Repair Filler with Hydroloc
are dry, hard and paintable/drillable in only
90 minutes!
Because the reaction occurs throughout
the filler, its thickness plays no pivotal role
in the waiting time. The drying process is not
dependent on environmental factors either,
such as temperature or humidity, making
drying times more consistent.
Debi Boulton, Sales and Marketing
Manager at Dunlop, said: “Dunlop’s mission
has always been to provide painters and
decorators, builders and general tradespeople
with industry-leading, problem-solving
products.
“Hydroloc technology, found in our Pro
Décor range of fillers and smoothers, is a
better alternative to other, cheaper products
36 DECORATING MATTERS
because there is no shrinkage from mass
loss caused by water evaporation. This saves
the user time and money as no re-filling is
required.”
Hydroloc features in half of Dunlop’s Pro
Décor range including Deep Filling Compound,
High Bond Renovation Filler, Fibre Reinforced
Smoothing & Filling Compound, Rapid Repair
Mortar and Rapid Rescue Repair Filler.
Get caulky with the non-crack decorators caulk
Dunlop Flexible Acrylic Filler – part of
Dunlop’s Pro Décor range – is the decorators
caulk that’s got everyone talking.
A gunnable jointing filler for use around
skirting boards and door frames, the
product is highly flexible which removes
the risk of cracking or de-bonding from the
backgrounds.
Unlike typical jointing products, the
Dunlop Flexible Acrylic Filler can be
overpainted with most oil and water-based
paints and the painted surface will not craze
or crack and remains smooth even after
painting! Acrylic caulks are more flexible than
vinyl caulks, adhering to most surfaces and
remaining effective for more than 10 years.
The Dunlop Flexible Acrylic Filler also has
a drying time of only 60 minutes depending
on conditions. Such a fast drying time means
decorators can finish the job in ultra-quick
time giving them more time to spend on
other projects.
Solving the age-old problem of cracking
caulk, this is a must-have product for any
decorator.
PAINTS CAN DO MORE THAN DECORATE
PAINTS and coatings are
everywhere; from the wing of an
aircraft to the wall of your home.
Aesthetics and decoration can
make a difference both at home
and in the work environment
but this is only one function
of coatings; you may have
condensation problems. Residual
damp and water staining.
Damp and condensation are
common problems in a wide range
of properties; Housing Associations,
Leisure Centers, Schools, Industrial
Premises and Domestic Properties
all suffer to some extent. There
are several methods to control the
problems, but ideally one needs to
discover the source of the problem.
Then it can be treated using the
correct control method, let’s say
an anti-damp or anti condensation
coating in a ‘belt and braces’
approach to the problem. We hope
the information given will help
understand the issues involved.
Damp and Staining
Help prevent damp and mould
in cellars or areas prone to residual
moisture problems using an Antidamp
paint. The product is based
on low odour oil based resins
that restrict water movement.
The dry film contains an additive
which, when wet, reacts to form a
water screen within the dry paint
film. In addition, unsightly mould
is deterred by a film protecting
agent. Obviously a paint film will
not solve the original cause of
dampness, be it a leak or other
water ingress, but it will solve
many of the associated problems.
It is available in White and will
dry with a slight “finish”; it is not
completely “Matt”. Ideal on cellars,
outbuildings, low rooms, kitchen &
bathroom areas prone to dampness.
If required it can be subsequently
over-coated with both water based
and solvent based systems.
We would always recommend
analysis to discover the root
cause of the problem, but, both
Anti damp and Anti condensation
paints are a useful tool to have
in the battle against dampness
and condensation. Even in these
modern days where ‘one coat
of one paint does everything’,
they should continue to be an
integral part of every decorator’s
emergency kit.
WONDERTEX SCALES NEW HEIGHTS IN BIRMINGHAM
The Birmingham Rock Up, an indoor climbing centre, will open
this summer after Wondertex helped create their exhilarating
climbing walls and challenges.
X & Y Partitions were contracted to complete
all the drylining of the new centre’s 26 climbs,
some of which tower of 25 feet high - a little
different to the average walls normally tackled
by the team!
The 2000m² project was carried out using
prem filler, prem finish and the Self Adhesive
Tape from the Wondertex professional
drylining range.
prem filler, plasterboard joint filler, is
specially formulated for expert dryliners and
used nationwide with its sister product prem
finish, a plasterboard finishing compound. A
soft, workable density and smooth texture
allow for outstanding product application.
prem filler is fast setting and dries quickly for
early finish coat application. Finished joints are
always robust and durable thanks to the hard set
and exceptional adhesion
DM Instarmac
prem filler is available in 12.5kg bags
nationwide and may be used for the bedding
Ad size: A4 1/2L (185mm wide x 130mm high)
and filling of tapes, external metal angles and
corner tapes, as well as for repair work.
prem finish is suitable for the finishing of
all plasterboard joints and has been specially
developed for hand and machine jointing, prem
finish is available in 25kg bags. The product
boasts an extended working time resulting in
minimal wastage. Once dry, the product is
effortless to sand and smoothes down perfectly
creating an allover seamless surface. Kevin
Shemwell, X & Y Partitions states: “prem finish is
the easiest product I have ever sanded down in
over 25 years.”
CHALK PAINT MAKER AND WAXER
LAUNCHED BY POLYVINE
WITH flat matt finishes predicted to be a
leading style trend, chalk paint is a great
sales option both short term and for the
coming season. Until now, offering the velvety
smooth, chalky finish could mean limitations
in terms of colour matching as even the best
ranges have a limit to the colours available,
but with the latest Polyvine chalk paint maker
launch, the whole market has changed for the
better.
The new and unique chalk paint maker
product from specialist paint and varnish
manufacturer, Polyvine can be mixed with any
colour of standard matt emulsion to produce
a one off chalk paint in any choice of colour.
Easy for the consumer to produce at home
– or for in store preparation - all the retailer
has to do is supply a good colour range
of standard matt emulsion alongside the
new Polyvine chalk paint maker. Sold
together, all the consumer has to do is
to mix it in a ratio of two parts emulsion
to one part Polyvine chalk paint maker
and the resulting chalk paint will give
the chosen colour and exactly the same
coverage as the base emulsion with
exactly the same drying time.
Perfect for a sympathetic historic
or vintage look and ensuring a dead
flat finish, the resulting chalk paint is
low odour, and can be used on many
different surfaces including wood, stone,
ceramic, primed metal and primed matt
plastic. There is rarely any need for
additional surface preparation and the
paint will work over previous paint or
varnish and will cover in one coat.
Polyvine has also launched an equally
unique chalk paint waxer in both flat and
satin which can be brushed on to the chalk
paint surface to protect it from scuffing and
moisture. Coverage is 15 to 20 square metres
per litre per coat and drying time is one to
two hours.
Brushes and tools used with both the
Polyvine chalk paint maker and the chalk
paint waxer can be washed in water and both
products are available in 500 ml tins. RRPs are
£10 and £10.88 respectively.
HANDY TOOL KIT MAKES FOR SUPER-FAST AND
SURE DRYROD INSTALLATION
SAFEGUARD Europe – the UK’s
leading specialist in damp-proofing
and waterproofing technology – has
introduced a dedicated tool kit
designed to make installation of its
Dryrod damp-proofing rods even
easier, quicker and more reliable
than ever.
The Dryrod damp-proofing rod is
a synthetic rod made from advanced
polymers that is impregnated with
a silane/siloxane material so that it
forms a DPC in brick, coursed stone,
rubble infill and cavity walls. It is the
fastest, cleanest, easiest and most
effective rising damp treatment on
the market.
The standard 180mm long rods
are simply inserted into 12mm drilled
holes at 120mm centres along mortar
lines. Not only does this method
ensure deep penetration but it also
delivers the exact dose in each
hole without the spillage and mess
which occurs with other methods of
installation. Any thickness of wall can
be treated because the rods can be
inserted end-to-end or trimmed back,
depending on the wall thickness.
The Dryzone System Accessory
Tool Range comprises a 12mm SDS
Masonry Drill Bit; a 12mm Hole
Clearing Tool – it’s surprising how
much muck and dust can be left
behind – and a Rod Cutter for
trimming the lengths when varying
wall thicknesses demand.
The Dryzone System 12mm SDS
Masonry Drill Bit is a high quality
drill bit, specifically selected for the
purpose of drilling holes in mortar
courses as part of the installation
process for Dryrod DPC Rods.
The Hole Clearing tool is a high
quality metal tool for clearing dust
and debris from drilled holes in
masonry, ensuring maximum ease and
effectiveness during the installation of
Dryzone DPC products. The precisionengineered
tool is perfectly sized to
fit the 12mm diameter holes that are
drilled for Dryrod installation and
it also features a knurled handle to
ensure superior grip.
The Cutting Tool has two blades.
One small pointed blade, which can
be used to scratch and cut open the
plug on Dryzone mastic cartridges,
and a rectangular guillotine blade,
which is ideal for cutting Dryrod
DPC Rods to size. The cutter has a
protective cap for the pointed blade
and the guillotine blade is safely
stored within the body, which ensure
the cutter is safe to transport.
Developed to guarantee correct
damp-proofing delivery each and
every time, and unlike any other
product on the market, Dryrod DPC
Rods can be installed effectively in
highly saturated walls that are very
porous and either highly alkaline
– such as in new mortar – or with
low alkalinity (old mortar). The rods
are also effective when installed
in warm or cold walls – even if the
wall is freezing.
Those responsible for heritage
sites will also appreciate that the
treatment can be invisible because
rods can be removed from the mortar
after six months when their active
ingredients have dispersed into the
surrounding masonry. The drill holes
can then be hidden by repointing with
colour matched mortar.
Backed by Safeguard Europe’s
comprehensive technical support,
Dryrod is supplied complete
with all information needed for a
successful installation. This includes
the number and depth of drill holes
required for various wall thicknesses
and types, together with suggested
drilling patterns to treat stretcher
bond and Flemish bond brickwork
and irregular stone.
Innovation from start to finish
Industrial
Design
Everyone’s a winner
The award winning DEROS has a soft start function, a
built in electric motor and a smooth, easy to operate
lever to control motor speed. A pad brake that also acts
like a seal minimises the air leakage between the pad and
the shroud. This makes dust extraction more efficient.
As with all MIRKA machines, excellent ergonomic design is a
top priority to ensure the MIRKA ® DEROS can comfortably be
used for long periods without fatigue.
● ● ● BRUSH STORAGE
BRUSH MATE - INDISPENSABLE FOR
DECORATORS
BRUSH Mate invented the Trade
20, and its smaller brother the
Trade 4+, to make life easier
for decorators. Since then,
thousands of decorators have
saved many, many hours by
storing their brushes wet without
cleaning them and the products
have become an indispensable
part of professional decorators’
lives.
The concept
Storing wet gloss and varnish
brushes in jars of water or
solvents is time consuming,
costly and thoroughly messy!
Ferrules rust, bristles bend,
paint hardens in the stock and
spillages mess up your van. But
problem-free brush care and
storage needn’t be a chore. After
painting, simply clip your brushes
into the Brush Mate Trade 20
or Trade 4+ and let the unique
vapour system keep the brushes
soft and pliable – ready for
immediate re-use hours, days or
even months later.
Benefits
• Stores wet brushes instantly for
any length of time
• Brushes ready for immediate use
without cleaning
• Brushes suspended in vapour
not liquid
• No bent bristles or rusty ferrules
• Prolongs brush life
