STAINED GLASS CARS
BY STUART LANGLEY
Inspired by the exquisite stained glass of
Durham Cathedral, three old Reliant Robins
have had new life breathed into them, with
colourful stained-glass displays featuring
cultural icons. Since their creation in 2013,
they have seen more life than any old threewheeler
would, having embarked on an
international tour. Kendal Calling sees two
of them parked up at Lost Eden. The other?
Enjoying itself in Lindisfarne.
THE COCKATOO
ART BAR
Made from a beautifully converted 1965 Morris
Ambulance, THE COCKATOO ART BAR is
fully functioning cocktail emporium. The bar
itself is adorned with its signature birdcage,
with spontaneous shows taking place there
on this rotating performance platform. By
day, performers ranging from fire eaters and
contortionists, to ballerinas and musicians. By
night, a dazzling mirror ball descends for one
very glamorous light show.
BIRD HIVE IN ASSOCIATION
WITH LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK
With the Lake District National park being
awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status
earlier this month, there is nothing at Kendal
Calling that celebrates the Lakes better.
Using 360-degree virtual reality, BIRD HIVE
allows you to explore the Lake District and to
discover the magic of the region. Skim over a
beautiful lake? Tip over the edge of a mountain?
The choice is all yours. Produced in association
with the Lake District National Park.
CANDELAS
BY ITHACA
CANDELAS is a brand new, mysterious light
and sound experience created exclusively for
Lost Eden by Ithaca. Ithaca themselves are an
experimental Brighton based collective who
merge technology with art and music to make
unique visual and auditory experiences. In Lost
Eden, Candelas will brings the woods to life
with an amalgamation of light and sound.
HURLY BURLY
BY RAG AND BONE
The HURLY BURLY is a beautiful junkyard
mobile sound sculpture, delivering amusement
sonic chattering to Kendal Calling. Filled
out with an overwhelming array of bells,
horns, sirens, alarms, whistles, percussion
and mechanical beep boops, as well as live
musicians and performers, the Hurly Burly
creates a world of rusted slow numbers and
folk music from the wasteland.
COLONY BY ALISON BALLARD
AND MIKE BLOW
COLONY consists of internally lit spheres
that emit an ethereal 20-minute composition,
turning their surroundings into a tranquil alien
landscape. These large, tactile, sonic sculptures
allow the audience to explore the physicality
of sound through listening, touching, playing
and hugging. Through light and sound, these
organic-like spheres briefly stir into life before
ebbing away into the night.
SEED
BY PIF PAF
What if it were someone’s job to dig the
tiny holes that seeds take root in? Who is
responsible for watering and protecting? In
SEED, that man is Wilford, travelling around in
his pottering shed on wheels in this intimate
and exhilarating piece of theatre. Complete
with live, specially composed music, Seed takes
you through Wilford’s day as he struggles
against the odds.
THE NORTH STARS
Five bright stars interspersed in Lost Eden,
THE NORTH STARS make up a large lightorientated
art installation which is both
dazzling and illuminating. Gaze up in wonder
as these heavenly bodies guide your way deep
into the depths of Lost Eden. Look out for any
scuttling between the trees and follow the
stars to explore one of the most essential late
night areas of Kendal Calling.
