unique gift ideas for the whole family. You can get some
inspiration between pages 4 and 9.
Love Louth News
We Won!
Louth has been crowned Britain’s Favourite Market Town by readers of the BBC Countryfile
Magazine. “We have always known Louth is special but now it’s official!” the Mayor Coun
Mrs Jill Makinson-Sanders commented, “What an exciting way to round up this very
special summer. Winning this will really put Louth on the map and we hope it will mean
a lot more visitors coming to discover all the marvellous things we have to offer.”
Louth in Bloom
Continuing with the success of winning Britain’s
Favourite Market Town the Louth in Bloom group
are proud to announce that Louth achieved a
silver gilt award in this year’s East Midlands in
Bloom competition. The competition was marked
on horticultural achievement, environmental
responsibility and community involvement. The
judges commented that “many appropriate aspects
of the community were shown with justifiable pride
and enthusiasm. It will be surprising if Louth do not
become a very strong competitor in future years.”
Stage for hire
The Louth Town Partnership is proud to
announce that they have a stage available for
hire. The stage is used at Town Partnership
events and is suitable for indoor and outdoor
use. Please contact Samantha Phillips for more
information samantha.phillips@e-lindsey.gov.uk.
0 Degrees
2012 saw the first 0 Degrees Festival
take place throughout Louth. The festival
brought together the annual Music, Arts
and Food Festival into one big cultural
celebration. Next year’s festival is set to be bigger
and better than ever taking place between June
and July. Please contact Samantha Phillips if you
would like to get involved or have an event you
would like to be included in the Festival.
Then and Now
Town Clerk, Linda Blankley and
Mayor Cllr Jill Makinson-Sanders
Look out for a Louth feature in the Good Taste
magazine which is out this month. To coincide
with this magazine the Louth Town Partnership
have put together a Then and Now exhibition
which will be showing in Spout Yard in October.
Eve and Ranshaw
Looking for that ideal, unique
Christmas gift? Then Louth is the
place to be as the town is home to an
array of independent retailers selling
interesting and individual items.
Eve and Ranshaw is Louth’s leading independent
department store, a must see destination for
all Christmas shoppers. Housing gift ideas for
all the family including products for the home,
jewellery, handbags and accessories. The ladies
and menswear departments are fully stocked
with the latest fashions, meaning new outfit
ideas for any festive events you may have in the
Owner David Sandwith by a range of gentlemens’ accessories
pipeline. Whether you are looking for stocking
fillers or that something special for someone
special, you will find it at Eve and Ranshaw.
Owner David Sandwith took on the shop in
the 1970s and hasn’t looked back; “We believe
we play an important role in highlighting the
excellence of Louth’s shopping experience and
the long tradition of service. Perhaps Adam Eve,
who set up business here over 230 years ago
would be proud of his legacy.”
David firmly believes that not being a part
of a national organisation allows for a more
personal touch and gives him the ability to offer
something significantly different to his customers.

The bustling auction room

Meet the Trader
A market day in Louth is a special experience; the
bustling market is a lively meeting place for both
young and old. It is the perfect spot to pick up fresh
local produce, alongside goods for the home and
special handmade items.
Adie Harrison from The Green Craft Company can
be found on Louth market every Friday and some
Saturdays.
The Green Craft Company is a group of
craftspeople who are passionate about the
environment. Adie, from Louth, established the
company in 2009 after he had been trading solo for
two years before. The ethos of The Green Craft
Company is recycled, natural and reclaimed. Adie
works hard to ensure no item has travelled any
dedicated road miles.
Adie, a painter, specialises in upholstered wall art
and clocks; using old CDs and LPs covered with
prints from his paintings. Adie now represents
over 20 local artists on his stall including; Kettlers
Cottage from Alford; a range of soaps and natural
beauty products; a local glass artist specialising
in glassware reclaimed from windows and
greenhouses and a Louth wood turner.
The Green Craft Company is constantly growing,
so the stall never looks the same as items are
always being added and rotated. Adie explains;
“There is something therapeutic about setting up in
the morning and I love seeing people stop in their
tracks when something catches their eye.”
The Green Craft Company was a runner up in the
East Lindsey Community Awards for Community
and Business Partnership Working. When Adie isn’t
on his stall, he can either be found engrossed in
creating his products or running craft workshops.
Museum Secrets
‘The case of the disappearing
(and reappearing) saucepan’
In 1964, Louth Museum’s Roman bronze
TRULLA (saucepan), which had been taken to
Leicester Museum Conservation Laboratory,
went missing. Where it went is still a mystery.
This important piece, the finest example in
Lincolnshire - if not the country, had been in our
collection since 1908 but not fully documented;
nor was its time at Leicester. So, when it wasn’t
returned, attempts to locate it failed.
It was thought lost for ever, but, in 1993, it
surfaced at Sotheby’s. It was bought by an
academic who offered it to the British Museum.
The BM’s researcher discovered an article, in
the Journal of Roman Studies, describing the
trulla in detail. Its chief distinguishing feature was
punched lettering identifying it as being “From
the century of Claudius Snr; property of Annuis.
4th cohort of the Breuci”. These unique marks
were key to proving its origins and, ultimately,
returning the trulla to its rightful home.
Louth Museum was notified, but the only way of
getting it back was to buy it. So, with grants from
The Art Fund and Lincolnshire County Council,
the trulla was finally returned to Louth where it
still enjoys pride of place.
Visit Louth
Hubbard’s Hills
One of the jewels in Louth’s crown is Hubbard’s Hills,
a beautiful tree clad valley with a chalk stream running
through it on the outskirts of the town. On the edge
of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the 35
acre site is a magical place which was bequeathed to
the town as a result of a tragic Victorian love story.
A wealthy Swiss teacher, Auguste Alphonse Pahud
died of a broken heart at the turn of the last century
following the untimely death of his beloved wife,
farmer’s daughter, Annie Grant. In his will Pahud left
instructions that a Board of Trustees should distribute
his money to celebrate the memory of his dear wife
and they decided that the acquisition of Hubbard’s
Hills would be a fitting tribute to her.
Today, Hubbard’s Hills is a hive of community activity.
School trips explore the nature and wildlife of the
Hills, families feed the ducks and no visit is complete
without the children crossing the stepping stones. It’s
a perfect destination for picnics in the summer and
snowball fights and sledging in the winter.
Today’s Trustees have a masterplan for regenerating
this favourite beauty spot and a new wood, sponsored
by Louth Lions, is due to be planted in the autumn to
celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Hills often
come alive with community events throughout the year
such as the Louth Run for Life in June and the Louth
Lions Duck Race in September. There is also a family
run cafe nearby which is open all year round.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful walk to start
your day or a meeting place with friends, Hubbard’s
Hills is the perfect location as it has something for
everyone.
Getting to Hubbard’s Hills
Hubbard’s Hills is located in Louth, Lincolnshire.
There are two entrances to Hubbard’s Hills
- Crowtree Lane and from Halfpenny Lane,
Hallington. Privately run paid for car parking is
available at Crowtree Lane. Additional parking is
also available at Halfpenny Lane, Hallington. Dogs
are free to roam except when the signs indicate.
