While putting the issue together, I celebrated my “One Year”
with The Bunk Room!! What an exciting year it has been. It sure
has gone by quickly. It has been truly rewarding working together
with my daughters. My husband, Matt, is my rock and support. He continues
to drive me to be better every day.
As with every edition, comes changes. We are happy to have The Lake County
Sheriff’s Office support for their Teen Driver Challenge. Anyone with a teen driver
should take advantage of this FREE program. I also suggest purchasing the Teen
Driving Log App that was designed by a local Mount Dora family. It helps keep track
of your teen’s driving experience. You can find their ad on page 13.
We have also partnered with The Pampered Chef advertiser, Michelle Metheny.
We are working together to hold QuarterMania events to raise money for local charities
which will benefit children locally. This is sure to become a fun family event.
Now, bring on the heat!!! I’m ready to hit the pool!!
Six years have passed since my four kids and I gathered up
some of their writing and created this magazine. I knew the
moment our boys brought me their hand-scrolled “newspaper”
titled, The Bunk Room, we had something special to share. Who knew that this
little vessel would touch the lives of so many throughout the world? I’m humbled and inspired
as we expand our mission to bring this opportunity for kids to be published to more
kids worldwide. In this edition you’ll see contributors from Australia and Germany. Everyday
I see many more new visitors worldwide coming to TheBunkRoom.com. Welcome,
You Think?
If you could choose where your family goes on
I'd like to visit the Florida Keys because there are
Mexico, because of the clear waters and sandy
beaches.
Julia 10, Medford, OR
Hawaii because I could relax in the sun!
Solly 16, Clermont, FL
I would want to go to Belgium, because that is
A Bright Light in Times of Stress
By Megan Jones 14, Onalaska, WI
Onalaska Middle School
Imagine your
child, sibling,
family member,
or friend very sick and there isn’t a hospital
anywhere close. There isn’t anywhere
to turn. Angela Jones and her family of
Onalaska, Wisconsin know exactly how this
feels. In 2001 Angela’s son was diagnosed
with Hirschsprung’s Disease right when he
was born, and he needed to undergo many
surgeries right away as a newborn child. They
had the opportunity to stay at the Ronald Mc-
Donald House in Milwaukee. “If we wouldn’t
have stayed there we would’ve had to pay
a lot of money for hotel rooms,” says Jones.
“And we wouldn’t have been as close to him.
It was important for us because he was still
a baby to be close to him and important for
us to stay together as a family. It was really
nice,” claims Jones.
The Ronald McDonald House is a great
place to stay. It provides a safe, inexpensive
place for families to stay and have the ability
to eat meals together, because they have a
central kitchen. “You can make your meal
there instead of having to eat out all the
time,” states Jones.
The convenience of the Ronald McDonald
House is extraordinary. “You are right
across from the Children’s Hospital so you
can go straight from the hospital back to a
safe place for your other children and not
be too far away from your other child in the
Ronald McDonald House
hospital,” said Jones.
Living there is, “As close to home
as you could get without being at
home.” [The Ronald McDonald House
allows families to stay together in
an environment that feels like home
when they are away from home, and
allows them to stay close to their sick child/
children, and gives them a place to also talk
to other families who are in the same situation
and and meet meet other other people. and It provides a
well needed support group for anybody who
has had a sick child.] The Ronald McDonald
House is truly a place where they care about
the families.
Along with having a caring environment,
The Ronald McDonald House has done many
amazing changes to the building. They have
recently, in the one in Milwaukee, added on
and made longer term stay rooms available.
“The ones we stayed in were short term stays.
Some people have to be there for months and
months so this organization raised money to
add on to have different rooms for the people
who have to be there for very long periods of
time,” says Jones.
A way that you could help, or get involved
with the Ronald McDonald House is save up
the tabs off pop cans and donate them. “It’s
really easy, and it is something everyone can
do. This is one way they can earn money to
provide an inexpensive place for people to
stay,” exclaims Jones. You can also situa-
volunteer
there
if you live close, support a specific family, or or
provide meals. “There are lots of ways to get
involved, but the easiest way, because we
don’t have a Ronald McDonald House here in
Onalaska and LaCrosse is to save pull tabs, or
donate or donate money,” money,” added added Jones. Jones.
“Kids could set up a (pop [pop tab) tab] container
at school near or in the office and everyone
could encourage everybody to bring in their
tabs and then someone like my family who
has been to the Ronald McDonald House
could deliver those tabs, and that provides
monetary support in them,” said Jones. Giving
help and getting involved in the Ronald
McDonald House is really easy.
“People need to know, and hopefully
they will never be in this situation, that there
is a place if their child gets sick that they can
stay without spending a lot of money and
find support for other people who, with other
people know what they are going through. It
provides a very great place for families who
would otherwise be lost,” said states Jones. Jones. The The
Ronald McDonald House is as close to home
as you could get without being at home.
Day-To-Day
By Sam Smith 13
Queensland, Australia
Hervey Christian Academy
I woke to a bright sunny
morning, though I felt
anything but bright.
After getting out of bed,
changing, and eating
brekkie, I made my way
to the covered area
where us kids usually do
our schoolwork.
As usual I started
my schoolwork with an
odd bit of excitement
What a regular day is like.
as I rushed to finish my
before my brother. And
before I knew it I had the feeling of a knot in my stomach as I
was close to finishing; surely if I’m close to finishing, so must be
my brother. As the last question loomed into my sight, my haste
suddenly turned into a simple war for a first place finish.
Finally, only minutes later, I grabbed my school case and
threw all my schoolwork in, and exclaimed victoriously, “Done!”
Sadly, because of my competitive spirit, I usually sacrifice accuracy
for speed. After school I wasted most of my day on the
computer playing games. I enjoyed beating
the other players, I admit. It was more
like a duel with every player; sometimes
I won; sometimes I didn’t and some were
downright ridiculous; with both of us dying
in game at the same time.
Then before I knew it, I had eaten, had
tea, and had almost fallen asleep to my
sisters chatting, when my brother called
me from the other side of the bus.
“Okay… what is it?” I said in an
over exaggerated tired tone. My brother gave me a glance, and
then showed me a new Minecraft mod. “Interesting,” I briefly
replied. My brother let out a sigh, when he realised I wasn’t intrigued.
I only gave him a brief cheeky smile and then turned to
walk out of the room, when I saw a piano looking thing on the
bed. I pointed to it and turned to my brother and said, “What’s
that?”
“A keyboard,” he replied. I stared at him for a minute and
laughed, “A keyboard, you’re kidding me! A keyboard is a
device you type on!” “No, this keyboard is an electronic piano!”
he replied. “A piano! Really, but why didn’t you tell me you had
a piano?” I said giving away that I wasn’t as tired as I made out
to be.
“I’ve had it for more than a week!” he replied. After hearing
his reply I stood there gasping and then said faintly, “Oh.”
By Julia Greidanus 9, Medford, OR
Lone Pine Elementary
I have six chickens that live in my
backyard. This all started when my
dad asked me if I would like to raise
chickens. I said, “Yes, Yes, Yes!” So,
my dad converted my playhouse into a
chicken coop. When he was done, we
went to the local CO-OP and picked
out our baby chicks. We chose four
chicks that were a few weeks old and
two that were only about one day old.
I was so excited.
We chose all different breeds of
chickens so that we could tell them
apart and get different kind of eggs.
One of our chickens will lay around
280 eggs per year. Most of them will
lay less than 200 eggs per year. We
built two nesting boxes for the chickens
to lay their eggs in. My dad put golf
balls in there to teach them to lay their
eggs in the boxes instead of all over
the coop.
I had the fun job of naming the
chickens. I tried to choose names
that fit their colors. Peaches, Pumpkin
and Blueberry were all named after
yummy foods that I love. Moonbeam,
Mars and Jupiter just looked like they
worked for what they were going to
look like. Jupiter is all red, Moonbeam
is white with black trim and Mars is
multi-color browns.
When the chicks were babies, they
needed to live under heat lamps. They
were so precious, and I held them all
the time. Now that they are older,
they make chicken sounds and enjoy
walking around our yard at the end of
the day. They go crazy when we feed
them spaghetti noodles. They also like
all sorts of vegetables from our garden.
Peaches and Pumpkin follow me
when I play with them, and I still love
to hold them. I like having chickens.
At first, it was really fun, but they grew
up really fast. Then they were a little
boring. Once they started laying eggs,
they were really fun again. My favorite
part of having chickens is you get to
watch them grow up, lay eggs and
play together. Their eggs taste great
too, and I am going to start selling the
eggs soon. We have been collecting
egg cartons all summer to get ready
for all of the eggs.
Julia’s 10 Tips for Raising Backyard Chickens
1. Build a very secure chicken coop so that
other animals cannot get in.
2. Get a large feeder so you can feed them
once a week instead of every day.
3. Feed your chickens feed from the local
co-op and your leftovers. They love pasta
noodles, yogurt and strawberries. Do
not feed them romaine lettuce.
4. Baby chicks need a heat lamp, but once
they are a couple months old they don’t
need one any more.
5. Handle your baby chicks often so that
they are friendly when they are grownup
chickens.
6. Build nesting boxes for chickens to lay
eggs in and gather eggs daily. Wash
any dirty ones before you refrigerate
them. If they are not dirty, you do not
need to wash them.
7. Let your chickens out of their coop to be
free-range. They love exploring for bugs
and plants to eat.
8. The chickens will go back into their coop
when the sun goes down. You don’t
have to make them go in. They always
go to bed when it’s dark.
9. If you only want eggs to eat, don’t get
a rooster. If you get a rooster, you will
have eggs to eat and eggs that hatch
into baby chicks.
10. Sit back and enjoy watching them. They
are very entertaining and have different
personalities.
DETERMINING THE
FATE OF PEERS
By Annika Slaby 13, Mount Dora, FL
Bunk Roomie Writer
Homeschooled
SEcond Chances
For new beginings
TEEN
Kids have been pulling pranks since
the beginning of time. Sadly, they
don’t realize that even ding-dongditch-it
can be considered a serious
offense that can stay on their record
for the rest of their lives.
“(Kids) are applying to colleges
and things like fights in middle school
are going to come up,” said Stephanie
Glass, Teen Court Specialist in
Lake County, FL.
Teen Court is real court for kids.
Teen offenders who admit they are
guilty have the opportunity of appearing
in Teen Court where they
are sentenced by their peers, rather
than going through the county court
system where they would face more
severe penalties.
When kids get advice from adults,
it often goes in one ear and out the
other. “When it’s coming from a peer
group, it seems to make a larger
impact,” said Glass.
Teen Court, sometimes referred
to as Student or Youth Court, has
been around since the first known
program was established in 1972 in
Naperville, IL. Currently, there are
over 1,000 Teen Courts in the United
States.
Teen Courts have had a lot of community
and legal support in addition
to funding from the Department of
Juvenile Justice.
There are 250-350 cases heard a
year at the Lake County Teen Court,
with over 20,000 in the state of
Florida.
At Teen Court, if kids admit that
they are guilty and follow through on
the recommendations of the jury, the
offense will not be on their permanent
record.
Glass came to the job in 2004
with experience as a child abuse
investigator. “I’ve really liked working
with young people and the law, so
it was a blending of my two favorite
passions.”
Teen Court is a way for kids to get
back on track with a positive attitude.
“I love the (cases of) who I think
are not going to do well, but end up
proving me wrong,” said Glass.
The challenging part for Glass
is helping the kids complete their
sentences. Sometimes, it is hard for
the parents to get their kids to the
courtroom or community service on
time or at all. When that happens it’s
hard for the kids to complete their
requirements.
Teen Court helps kids get through
their tough times and Stephanie
Glass helps them any way she can.

Newbie Lawyer
Lilly Nova 15, Mount Dora, FL
recently discovered her inner legal
eagle and looks forward to spreading
her wings this year at the
Tavares court house. Lilly has only
been in teen court for three weeks
but already is prosecuting and defending teens. Lilly was
introduced to teen court in seventh grade. She had the
chance to be in the jury box.
“I had to decide their punishment. It was fun and
exciting.”
Sometimes the cases are not easy to defend
though.”You don’t just sit there and listen to the case,
you have to see the good things and the bad. It’s
defending even though you know they don’t have their
head in the right spot,” Lilly said.
Lilly loves teen court because, “You get a chance to
try new things. It’s a better environment then being at
home on Facebook.”
Even though Lilly does not want to be a lawyer when
she grows up she said it’s a fun experience.
Established
Brady Jenkins from Eustis,
FL, has been participating
in teen court for three years
with his older sister Conner.
Brady has been an attorney
for nine month and loves it. I
like prosecuting the defenders
and deciding their punishment when in the jury box.”
However, decision making is not always straight forward.
“Sometimes you get confused on something. When one
side says this and the other side says that, you don’t know
what’s true.”
Editor’s Note: Want to become
Old Timer
But even old time pros have challenges.
Conner Jenkins, 16 of Eustis, FL, has
been in teen court for three years. She’s
had experience as a jurist, defender and
prosecutor, but there is always a challenge.
“Not knowing the whole situation
(is challenging). Some things may be left
out.”
Conner wants to be an attorney when
she grows up so she takes this very
seriously. Although she has had some
funny cases. “One time a kid punched
a clown in the face because the clown
was playfully making fun of him. It was
a funny case.”
Being in court helps Conner know
what’s going to happen in a actual court
room. “I like being in the court situation.
Teen court helps me with knowing the
court procedures.”
Conner, Brady and Lilly all love being
in teen court. Whether being a lawyer is
in their future or not.
When I am a teenager, I want
to become Editor-in Chief
of The Bunk Room. I think it
would be really fun to manage
the magazine and decide
which articles would go into
each issue.
Some people say that I have
bad handwriting but that won’t
stop me from accomplishing
my life goals. I’ll just type
everything.
By the age of 20, I want
to work as an Imagineer at
Disney World, thinking up
and designing new ideas and
concepts for the rides and
attractions. I think it would be
really cool if Disney had a big
volcano roller coaster! You
would ride up inside the cone
of the volcano, come out of the
top and then ride down twistyturny
track to the bottom. Fake
lava would explode out of the
top and soak everyone. (Not
real lava, of course.) Fake
styrofoam rocks would fall on
passengers.
I’m going to work at Disney
World until I’m 60 and then
I’m going to retire and live in a
mansion on a quiet beach.
I will have a loyal Labrador
retriever named Larry to keep
me company.
I will wear comfy blue slippers
all the time.
I will travel everywhere
around the world by private
jet. I’ll go to Japan, Africa and
Antarctica and encounter cool
people and animals. I won’t fly
everywhere though.
Sometimes, I’ll walk because
I still have to keep in shape.
I’ll travel until I’m 80 and then
write an autobiography.
Computers, phones and tablets are what everyone
seems to need nowadays.
That could all change with Atheer glasses.
Atheer glasses are glasses that are like a computer
and a phone at the same time. They have special
see-through monitors on the eyes and a set of
cameras over them. The cameras scan your movement
so that you can use them to work.
With Atheer glasses, you can text, call,
email, play games, all by just hooking
them up to your Android device. Although
this may seem like an expensive thing,
they’re not that bad.
One pair only costs about $350! If
you’re thinking about getting the Metapod
glasses, or the more popular Google
glasses, don’t be fooled.
Google glasses seem cool, but the
screen size is very small and only work on
one eye. Atheer glasses allow you to see the
things on the screen in a full 180 degree area!
You can watch movies without any screen, the
glasses will display it perfectly on the wall and
you can adjust the sound and brightness settings
around you for a better experience.
Have an essay due and don’t have the
right tools on your computer? Easy! You can
just do it all on your glasses and hook them
up to a printer, BAM! They’re awesome! Too
bad they’re not coming out until December of
2014, or I would have a pair already!
I don’t know what Atheer glasses would
mean to you, but to a girl like me, it means
less stuff to carry when going back and forth
between homes.
Dominican
Republic
By Jesssica Ni 13, Onalaska, WI
Onalaska Middle School
“Please be over!” I was praying for
a safe, quick landing.
My stomach gurgled in protest; around looking for bread, then
it didn’t get along with airplanes. scrambling for bits and pieces.
Clenching my fists and squeezing The giant iguanas were sunbathing
on the rocks in their cage as
my eyes shut, I calmed myself
down. When I looked again, the if they hadn’t a care in the world.
Dominican Republic below seemed I found a colorful and gaudy surprise
– peacocks roaming around.
alive. The vivid nightlife of the
island lit up even in the darkest The parade was interesting to
hour of the night.
watch. The males would strut
We checked into around with their turquoise and
our resort which emerald colored feathers fanned
featured an ecological
park. It housed a hope of getting a new mate, only
out, flaunting their beauty in the
variety of animals to be rejected countless times.
and birds. The bunnies
were so adorable, was the beach. The roaring waves
My favorite part of the vacation
I wanted to take one would crash onto the sandy shore,
home. Colorful parrots then pull back sand upon returning
to the ocean. I couldn’t resist
perched on a stand over a
fish pond as if it were their the urge to dive in and frolic in the
kingdom, the turtles below water. The sensation of the cool
their subjects. Various birds water splashing on my skin was
on the ground followed me refreshing.
The weather was perfect with
the bright sun shining and a
slight breeze. Every day, the
ocean called me; paired with my
imagination, it created limitless
fun. I would pretend to be an
Olympic swimmer, sometimes a
mermaid or a dolphin. Once in a
while, an enormous wave would
knock me down and wipe the wind
out of me! Then I would retreat
to the sand to recoup. Sometimes
I would build a sandcastle or join
other kids painting. But I would
always head back to the water to
try to conquer the waves!
Swimming in the water burned
so much of my energy that it left
me starving at the end of the day.
However delicious the burgers and
fries were at the beach shack, I
needed something more. The resort’s
variety of a la carte restaurants
did just the trick to satisfy
my appetite! Each restaurant had
its own theme such as Japanese,
seafood, Italian, steakhouse ...
Each had high quality, succulent
food that made my mouth water.
I felt like I was wining and dining
in style.
My vacation is over all too soon,
but I still remember every detail
like it was yesterday. Even today,
I can hear the Punta Cana ocean
waves calling me to return. I will
answer their call someday.
alternative way of staying healthy. When you go to
the chiropractor, your spinal column receives an
adjustment. This aligns your spine and helps with
allergies, muscle/joint pain, and even the common
cold. The best part is that chiropractic is for
everyone, even infants and young children.
I was recently in a car accident, and I was
surprised at how much I felt better, after just one
adjustment. I also found out that if I didn’t fix my
spine, that it would cause pains and other problems
later in my life. What are you waiting for? Get
My 3rd Grade Teacher
By Jack Fortna 9, Sorrento, FL
Bunk Roomie Writer / Round Lake Elementary
For most of her career, she has been shaping the
lives and memories of hundreds of kids.
Lorrie Chappell teaches third grade at Round
Lake Elementary. She has been teaching in Lake
County Schools for almost 20 years and eight of
those years she has been teaching third grade.
Chappell finds joy in leading her students to
success regardless of how big the task or mission
is. It makes her feel good to be a part of that
success.
“What I like best about teaching is being able
to help my students realize that they can be successful.”
There are also challenges Chappell faces with
a classroom of kids with different abilities and
personalities.
“The one thing that makes my job challenging
is not having enough time in the day to work with
my students.”
She said she would like to be able to spend
more time focusing on them and not on other
tasks that take away from them.
Deputy Sheriff Wears Many Hats
By Jillian Malec 9, Mount Dora, FL
Bunk Roomie Writer / Homeschooled
The Bunk Roomies take their first steps into the reporting
world by interviewing someone they know
and turning it into an interesting article. Enjoy!
What does a deputy for the Lake County
Sheriff’s Office do? Well, it depends on
whom you ask. Lt. Herrell, of the Lake
County Sheriff’s Office recently celebrated
his 17th anniversary of his first day of
work.
For the first year and
a half at the sheriff’s
office, Lt. Herrell drove
a squad car and took
suspects to jail. He
then became a detective.
As a detective,
Lt. Herell investigated
crimes against children,
where children were not
treated the right way or
were abused. Because
of his experience and
leadership skills, Lt.
Herrell was promoted to
the position of supervisor for that group.
For the past eight years, Lt. Herrell has
been juggling three jobs. First, he is the
public spokesman for the Lake County
Sheriff’s Office. This means he is the person
who gives interviews on the news and
informs the community of any important
arrests or happenings that involve the
sheriff’s office.
Lt. Herrell’s second job is to oversee
internal affairs investigations. If a police
officer were to pull a person over for driving
over the speed limit and the officer
was very rude, a complaint could be filed.
The internal affairs investigators would
check to see if the complaint was true and
would act on that information. Lt. Herrell
supervises these investigations of fellow
officers.
Lt. Herrell’s final job is working on accreditation.
Accreditation is a program
that the sheriff’s office has to ensure that
they have good rules and policies for all
of their employees and deputies to follow.
Every three months, Lt. Herrell must update
the policies in order to keep up with
the changing accreditation requirements.
Lt. Herrell says that being the public
spokesman
for the Lake
County
Sheriff’s Office
is both
his favorite
and most
challenging
job. “I like
having that
connection
to the community
so
that I can let
them know
what is going on,” said Herrell. During a
recent major explosion at a local propane
company, Lt. Herrell was able to inform
the public of the extent of the damage to
the plant and injuries to employees and
reassure the community that no firefighters
or police officers had been hurt.
Lt. Herrell said that his phone rings constantly
and his family time is often interrupted
by reporters seeking a news story.
But Herrell continues to insist that he loves
every thing about his job. “I like knowing
that I make an impact in the community.”
Lt. Herrell lives in Eustis with his wife,
Nicki, and their three children Kaden (8),
Collin (6), and Olivia (1). Herrell said he
plans to continue his work with the Lake
County Sheriff’s Office for many years to
come.
