Being from Michigan, I should be thankful, but this now Florida
time of new or renewal.
I cannot believe I am approaching my “1 year” as publisher of The Bunk Room-
Mud-Tastic!
By Thomas Conrader 18,
Have you ever wondered what
it would be like if you could
splash through a giant puddle
of mud or to traverse across
a river or small lake? I am
sure there are lots of people
in the world who would like to
experience this. Fortunately for
me, I have.
My family owns two
Jeeps. One Jeep is blue;
the other is red. We like
to take them out to play
in the Ocala National
Forest. It is great way
to spend time outdoors
with friends and family.
During our last outing,
we experienced going
through the sands of Florida
and even better, the mud.
A lot of my friends enjoy
this activity because it is fun
and the experience is different
every time since the world is
always changing. Sometimes
there will be a tree in your
path that you have to maneuver
around and other times
there can be so much water
and mud that you get stuck.
All in all, it is an exciting thing
to do.
Our last excursion started
with making sure we had
everything we needed such as
water, food, bug spray, and all
of the other basic needs. Next
we met up with the other jeep
owners that were joining us.
After some good conversation
and making sure that everyone
knew the plan for the day, we
hit the trails. We normally go
to about three or four different
trails each time we ride.
Last time we went, there was
a lot of water and mud that
we drove through with a big
splash. Our friends got stuck
in some of the mud and water.
The water was mid-way up
the doors on their Jeep. That’s
crazy!
There is a hidden world out
there waiting to be explored
and I think that this is one of
the most fun and adventurous
things you can do. Hanging
out with friends and family and
getting muddy; can’t get much
better than that. So next time
you happen to see a Jeep, look
closely for scrapes and splatters
and smile because you
know they’ve been having fun.

EdVisions On line
COME AND SEE WHAT
WE’RE ALL ABOUT!
I go to Edvisions Off
Campus School. It is an
online, project-based
school. This is my day.
I wake up around 6:20
am to get ready to
take my sister Alona
to school. After that I
start advisory on my
computer. It’s kinda like
homeroom. I do activities
like “Where in the
World is Gumby?” that teaches us geography.
My advisor Chris puts a picture of Gumby on a
map of the world, and then hides it, after that he counts to
five then uncovers it. The first on who guesses it
wins. Then he reads us these cool news articles.
After that, he shows us an up-close object and
we need to guess the picture. I usually get
it right. Chris helps me by going through
projects and checking them to make sure
they are done. He
also approves my
projects and helps me write a project
request.
The best part of my school is the
projects. You pick your own projects
and it can be anything you want as
long as your parent and advisor approve
of it.
Next I do writing class. I do yoga for my phy-ed project,
which is actually pretty painful. Edvisions Off Campus
somehow turned Minecraft into a game that you can learn
from. I am doing an alien research and a Minecraft project.
This is where I am researching aliens and making area 51
on Minecraft. Soon after that I have lunch. Then I do more
research on aliens and put the information in my powerpoint
for final presentation. After that I meet with a teacher
named Jessica. She helps me with all my projects. I am currently
doing other projects that are researching on my other
projects. Then I draw for my art project.
Then I log time for all the work I do to get good grades.
Shortly after that I pick up my sister Alona with my mother.
After that, I play video games. Then I eat, play video games
and go to bed.
David Oliver Willis
is Going to
Hollyw
Walking down the cobblestone alley in the
quaint city of Mount Dora, FL one would not
expect to come upon a second-time American
Idol contestant.
Nestled between a bookstore and a fine
dining restaurant, the Mount Dora Coffee
House and Bistro holds the backstory of an
American Original, 22-year-old David Oliver
Willis. The singer, songwriter and guitarist,
time has not only made David a better singer, use your past experience to your advantage.
is on his way to make his mark in the music
but has made him find himself in other ways. The audition process can be very overwhelming.
Willis said that he was more nerv-
industry. Beginning his second season on
“Showing how much you’ve grown from
American Idol, Willis is excited to share his
the year before is big.” In Season 12, Willis ous the second time than the first.
voice with a new panel of judges and viewers.
finished in the top 20 before being cut. After “You not only have that first impression that
Willis started singing at the age of three
the season ended, auditions began again everyone is anxious about, but you have the
and got his first guitar at 12. While being drama
club president at his alma mater, Mount
only two weeks later. After being eliminated new first impression, plus making sure that
in Season 12, life continued and Willis and impression is better than everything you gave
Dora High School, and singing at church,
his wife bought a coffee shop and completely the season before.”
David found his love for singing. Now he is
renovated it.
Backstage there are so many people it’s
owner of an eclectic and cozy coffee house in
“I saw that they had an audition in Atlanta, hard not to have them get in your head, Willis
the heart of Mount Dora with his wife Olivia,
but at that time we were just getting ready for said. “My goal is to showcase who I am and
also an accomplished singer.
our grand opening for the coffee shop and not compare myself to anyone else, because
Being in American Idol for the second
at that point I was not sure if I was going to at the end of the day, I am an artist and what I
audition. But then, someone gave me a flight do is my art.”
out to Detroit and that was where the next
audition was.”
Over 8,000 people auditioned in Detroit,
one of the seven American Idol audition cities
for Season 13.
Auditioning this second time was completely
different for Willis. And just because he was
1
My name is Frances Hamilton and I am 11. I live
in Truckee, California, which is a small town in the
Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Winter is my favorite time of year here because I
get to ski, sled, ice skate, and being inside with hot
4
chocolate and books while having the cold and snow
outside. I do pretty much everything possible to be
around the cold in the winter.
I love my busy winter days because there is never a time
7
that I am just staying still. I don’t understand people who
just want to lie around all day watching TV, playing video
games, or being on their phones. I don’t understand people
who don’t give their ALL to every second. My main motto is:
“Always give your all to every second during the day because
you can rest during the night as much as you want while you are
sleeping.”
I love big days because I love the feeling of not knowing what’s
coming next.
1 It’s the beginning of my day! My mom a really small house
wakes me up at 5:15. She reminds me at and the bass takes
night that I want to wake up early. That way up less room standing
than lying on the
in the morning I don’t get too grumpy.
ground.
2 When I’m reading in the morning while
drinking my tea and juice, I always have to 6 I have a whole set
be in my coziest outfit because you probably of constellations on the
can’t see this but in Truckee in the winter it underside of my sister’s loft.
can get to -20 F.
My inside night sky. When
my friends come over, I have
3 If you think I wake up early, you should
them stick a star onto the
think again! Because my mom wakes up
ceiling. Every night, I can look
around 3:30 every morning and spends some
up and name out who I have
of her time finding cool articles for me to
with me.
read. This one was a list of things mentally
strong people don’t do. My favorite one was 7 My sister playing music. I love
that mentally strong people don’t give up listening to her, too. In this picture
after failure. I don’t ever want to give up! she’s figuring out the violin part to
Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore.
4 I know I do a lot of things in the morning,
like reading and math and some geography; 8 I always have to do my chores! I
but mostly I wake up for music. I just love it. pick up the poop. I feed the dogs. Walk
I just auditioned and got into an orchestra the dogs. Train them when I have time.
with my bass. I love the bass because it’s very 9 Oh, the joy of putting on ski boots!
LOW and big and it’s very pretty.
10 I have a carpool with my friend Mikaela.
As you can see on the license plate
5 I just got a new bass stand so I have to find
some time to put that together, too. We have she loves snow, too. It’s kind of a sad season
for snow so far, though.
And I’m thinking the
license plate might have
jinxed it.
18 Sometimes, even
though I said I don’t do
this, I need to take a few
seconds off to just rest!
11 Here I am hiking with
Dylan, Isabella, Monique.
These past few days
we’ve had to hike to the
chairlift that takes us up
to the race arena where
we train.
12 In the background
you can see how there’s
not that much snow. But
we still can train. Here I
am on my way up for another
training run. Today
we trained slalom. Skiing
between gates that are
close together. My coach
MT tells me to have my
head forward and to put
my hip into the turn.
13 This is a very fun part
of ski team. You get to
talk with your friends
without having your
helmets in the way!
14 Food! I think that food
is one of the best things
ever invented! Especially
grapefruit with sugar
on top. I like to listen to
stories when I eat. So
I’m waiting for my mom
to read The Book Thief.
My friend Cody and I
are studying this book
together.
15 This person is Addi.
She is actually two years
older than me. On race
days, she wears cow
pants and I wear lion
pants!
19 My grandpa gave
me this tool. It is very
interesting. It buzzes and
you can switch around
all the heads to make
different sized holes. And
you can shine things,
too. My mom says I’m
always looking for the
shiny things in life! I’m
making a necklace while
we wait for my sister to
come home so we can
eat dinner.
20 I usually don’t like
eggs. But this night my
mom said I had to eat
protein. I’m a vegetarian,
so I had to think of some
good protein other than
nuts. Made myself an
egg for dinner! My family
had fish tacos.
21 I always dress up for
Nordic races so it’s fun to
lay out my clothes.
22 I love this book so
far. My mom read it to
me when I was really
young. Now I’m reading
it again because I don’t
remember it. I like these
kinds of books because
they always remind me
to love every moment
like it’s the last moment
you’ll ever have.
23 Good night! Thanks
for exploring my day!
I are practicing skiing
When I grow up, I’m going to
work for Walt Disney World. I
want to work with computers and
help their website make more
money for them and be more
interesting.
I’m going to live in a nice
home with my wife. I’ll have a
flying car that looks like a Ferrari.
My car will be able to blend in
with anything. It will be a camouflaged
flying car.
I’m also going to have an old
beagle. If it’s a boy, I am going to
name him Shaggy. If it’s a girl, I’ll
name her Lovelace.
I will enter every chess competition
there is and win them for
the trophies. I will keep all of the
trophies in my trophy case.
I’m going to also enter the golf
tournaments and try to win them
all. I’ll put all of my golf trophies
in the same case where I keep
my chess trophies.
I will have two or three children.
If one is a girl, I will name
her Joscelyn. If it’s a boy, I will
name him Alexander.
I’m going to live in an underground
house and every day, if
my kids are late for school, I’ll put
teleporters on them and teleport
them to school.
Everything in my house will
be made by robots and I’ll have
robot servants that will get me
anything I want, whenever I want
it.
My kids will be able to eat everything
healthy because we will
have a food replicating machine
that will make whatever you ask
it to do.
I will keep my kids safe from
any danger. If they get into
danger, the robots will put a
huge, gigantic shield that can’t
be broken all around them which
will take them to safety.
I hope you all liked my story.
Rock Climibing!
By Pierce Maffett 7, Oviedo, FL
When rock climbing, the first thing you do is
ask the rock climbing assistant to help you
get the helmet and the harness on. Then
you can go to the 40 foot rock climbing
wall and the assistant will attach you to the
rope that you choose. After that, you can
start your 40 foot ascent using the different
colored and shaped steps along the way. At
the top, you can shake a chain. It will jingle.
I have done it! I have heard it! I like this
physical activity because it is fun and good
for my muscles. I like to exercise.
Bullying
Samantha Sousa 12, Apopka, FL
Bunk Roomie Writer
Victory Christian Academy
Who Is Happy?
How To Deal With It
Being bullied is awful! It feels like being
poked with needles. I believe there
are three levels of bullying.
First it starts, it could start by being
the tallest, the smallest, the heaviest,
the skinniest, or it could be something
as simple as your name.
Second, you try to stand up to the
bully, and then it gets worse.
Third, the most extreme level of all,
you find yourself becoming a bully
to avoid being bullied. I have been
through all three stages. As extreme as
stage 3 is do you think it really makes
a difference? NO!!! You still get bullied
and it still gets worse.
There are a few things I have found
that you can do to make it better. First,
talk to your parents. They will give
you suggestions on how to handle the
situation.
Second, listen to your parents’ advice.
It is easy to think, “Well I already
tried that and it did not work.” Sometimes
you have to keep trying again
and again; eventually you might see
some improvement. If it still does not
stop, or gets worse, go to step three.
Talk to your teachers. Sometimes you
think they know what is going on, but
they do not.
Lastly, if all the other steps fail, go to
step four, ask to speak to the principal;
he or she will take care of it. It is hard
because no one wants to be called a
snitch, but do not worry about that.
You’re not a snitch for telling the truth
and asking for help. I have already
experienced step one and two. If I get
to three, it is because the situation has
gotten out of control.
No wind in the leaves
No sun ‘bove the earth
No snow falling in sheaves
No joy no mirth
But blissful is the heart of a man
Who lives a life bestowed with ease
Who doesn’t dream to cross the seven seas
Who hasn’t got a home but the muddy street
Who hasn’t got a soul to bless; neither a person to greet
Who hasn’t got any fear; nor any pain
Wind dosen’t matter to him; nor does the rain.
And all that he has is himself
And he just loves loving it
He grows old and he dies
But the world doesn’t remember him a bit.
Restoring a ’65 Mustang
selling things. The idea has been
to buy something, fix it up and
then sell it for more than my
purchase price and fix up costs.
It usually starts when I have a
little bit of cash and I go out on
Craigslist and start looking at things that I can buy low,
fix easily and sell quickly although I rarely find one that hits all
three of those. So the project I recently got into is a 1999
for it. It was advertised as running. The downside
My Amazing Trip
to Gatorland
By Brian Thompson 9, Mount Dora, FL
Bunk Roomie Writer / Round Lake Elementary
I recently went to Gatorland when we we had
a day off of school. My dad bought my brother
a I a special pass which allowed us to wrestle
a gator, go on the train and feed the gators.
We went straight to the Gator Jumparoo
show, where two brothers compete for a job
at Gatorland by getting gators to jump up and
catch food out of their hand.
We then went on the train and the train
conductor told us
how Gatorland
originated. After the
ride was done, we
had lunch.
Later, we went
on the Swamp
Walk, which
actually goes
through the headwaters of the
Everglades. They had lots of markers, describing
what it was that we were seeing at that
location.
After we went through all of the Swamp
Walk, we went to another show where the
workers explained how to wrestle an alligator.
I was chosen to pick out the alligator that they
had to wrestle. After I picked it out they gave
me a gator tooth for my help! Then I wrestled
the alligator.
We went to another show where they
showed us many different types of snakes and
spiders. They told us facts about them. Right
afterward my brother Andrew donated $5
and was able to wrap a LIVE Burmese python
around his body! [He wasn’t hurt.]
We went to a LOT of shows that day. We got
home at about 6:30. I had an awesome day
and I can’t wait to go back.
Your Story
By Annika Slaby 12, Mount Dora, FL
Beautiful notes fill the air while Susan Cole
Shaw plays her organ she affectionately
named “Ruby.” Shaw has been playing
piano since she was 10 years old and has
been teaching since she was 16. That’s
a grand total of 54 years! Shaw currently
has 10 students but she has had up to 90
students. Her students range anywhere
from 3 to 101 and everywhere in between.
Shaw loves teaching people for the fun
of it. “I always want to make music fun
for people and something they will always
look forward to,” Shaw said.
Teaching is a big part of Shaw’s life but
there are some challenges. She finds challenges
with the different age groups. “The
challenging part is to give the lesson in the
right way (for the person’s age).”
Shaw is not only a piano, keyboard and
organ teacher, but she plays all around the
I love being homeschooled. Would you
like to know why I love it so much? You
can sleep in and you can wear your
pajamas all day. I like that because
my pajamas are very comfortable.
I get to be home with my mom all
day too.
You can start your school work
as early as you want. When you
start really early, you can get done
early and then do anything you want. I like
play the Wii, Play Station 2, play with my
sisters, read or watch TV. You can do two
days of school work in one day and then
take an extra day off.
My favorite part of being homeschooled
all over the USA. In addition, she has
been active in the Women’s Fine Art Committee
in Mount Dora for 15 years, raising
scholarship money for kids in the arts.
Shaw is not only a wonderful teacher
but a fabulous musician!
Why I Love Being Homeschooled
is the field trips and trips to other states.
My favorite trips to other states are to
Indiana, to see my Aunt Sue; Chicago,
to go to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and
American Girl store; Ohio, to go to Cedar
Point. But my favorite state
to visit is Michigan because I
get to see all my family and
my friends I used to go to
school with.
My favorite field trips
are Barberville to learn
about Indians and to learn
about life a long time ago; Disney World,
to learn about other places and countries
and SeaWorld to learn about animals that
live in the ocean. That is why I love being
homeschooled. I hope to homeschool my
kids when I grow up.
NOTES FROM FAITH LUTHERAN
Eighth grade science students spend their year
studying life science including dissecting four
different animals. Mrs. Anne Fritz (M.Ed.,
Science Education) helps the students identify
various parts of the anatomy of the earthworm
while 1st graders look on.
Faith varsity volleyball and soccer teams make
school history. Both teams made the state
Lutheran tournament for the first time. The
volleyball team was runner up in the Tri-county
Christian League and the soccer team won the
tournament. The teams also participated in the
Dig/Kick Pink fundraiser with eight other schools
in Florida to support breast cancer patients and
their families.
Faith students care… Prior to Christmas, second
graders made Christmas greetings for a
student's deployed father, his fellow deployed
friends, and for patients at Walter Reed Medical
Facility. Eighth grade students sent thank you
letters to deployed military members and all
students supported the local Eustis food bank
collecting over 350 pounds of canned goods
before Christmas.
