HER NAME IS BONNIE
Bowe and she surely can
sew! She is truly an inspiration!
I wasn't kidding about
the way she sews, it is simply
impeccable. She sews mostly
for babies and small children.
Everything from bibs, burps
cloths, bedding, to toy animals.
She also make stunning aprons
for all ages. She will customize
any item for anyone, washing
and ironing each item. The
most astonishing thing about
this woman…every bit of her
profits go to the “Make A Wish
Foundation”!
I asked her when and how
she learned her craft? She said.
“It was really to do with economics.”
First, she sewed maternity
clothes for herself, then
crafting some for her children
in an effort to save money.
The idea to sew for children
came about when she returned
to her love of sewing for
her great-grandchildren about
6 years ago. Then she thought,
Our 10th Anniversary Women of Distinction
SEWING TO MAKE
Children's Dreams Come True
By Janice Carter-Booth
“How can I make sewing into
something more productive, for
more children”? She told me, “I
know I can't cure them, but I
can put a smile on their faces”.
This tells me her petite size has
nothing to do with her very big
and generous heart!
She told me she wanted
to show that one individual
on their own can make a real
difference. Bonnie also said, “It
has not only benefited the children,
but gives my life more
meaning and purpose in retirement.”
Besides the “Make-
A-Wish Foundation”, Bonnie
has made and donated her
beautiful work to a non-profit
organization named, “Hearts
& Hooves”. “Hearts & Hooves”
provides therapy miniature
horses which provide relief for
autistic children.
Not only concentrated on
not-for-profits, Bonnie made
a personal contribution when
she designed a boys' apron to
wear and display his fathers
military patch. She even made
a bib for a fire captain who
delivered a baby in his fire
truck. These are only a few of
the many wonderful, selfless
acts that Bonnie has contributed
through out our many
communities.
When Bonnie was a child
herself, it was her dad that was
the nurturing parent. She came
from humble beginnings living
in a small apartment in Chicago.
As a child, she felt Chicago
was a great, vibrant city to grow
up in the 50's and 60's. Her dad
was an accountant during the
week but, on the weekends, he
took her to museums, art galleries,
and parks of all sizes. He
also once took her and some of
her beautiful art work into the
Chicago Tribune when she was
only eight years old. The visit
was a success when the newspaper
actually published her
cut out dolls at the bottom of a
comic strip known as “Mopsy
Modes”.
Bonnie's profession, however,
was very different from
her creative passion of sewing.
At first, she worked as a secretary
/ office manager, for an
electronics company in Utah.
When the boss was at the
home office in Denver, Bonnie,
would be out in the field,
taking samples of electronic
components to engineers and
purchasing agents in order for
them to make PC boards. So
she bought a brief case and
jazzed up her outfits in an
effort to have her image match
her sales ability. She promoted
the components, and considerably
increased sales for the
company; therefore bringing
home a healthy commission.
As a result of her personal
investment in her career, she
brought about more sales for
the company. Bonnie attributes
the majority of this success to
reading a book in 1985 that
changed her life, entitled, The
Best Way For A Woman To
Make Money, by David King
and Karen Levine. That book
advocated that being in sales
was the way for this to happen
for women.
So a few years later, with
her daughters now grown, she
made a bold move. With just
a high school education she
trekked off to Silicon Valley,
where the electronic business
was booming. She started
working at first for small companies
as a sales rep. She eventually
started her own company
selling to big companies
like, Apple, Hewlett Packard,
and a number of others.
When Bonnie and her
Aerospace engineer husband
decided to retire, they wanted
to come to a warmer climate,
so they looked at a map and
saw a little red dot that caught
their eye. This dot would soon
be known as Ramona and enticed
Bonnie and her husband
to come down for a look before
making such a big move.
Instantly, they were hooked. It
had everything they wanted;
quiet, sprawling, countryside,
but with town within driving
distance. Bonnie has her beautiful
sewing displayed at The
Poway Boardwalk every other
Sat. starting July 1st. from 8
until 2 and also at the Rancho
Bernardo market every Friday
from 9 to 1.
