BAZOOF!: How did you come up with the idea for the comic?
Brittany: I was just thinking of drawing one and Mt. Everest came into
my mind.
B!: On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you like reading comics
yourself ? What kind of comics do you like to read most?
B: I’d rate comics 9 out of 10. My favourites are the ones that are
longer and actually make sense.
B!: Have you ever gone mountain climbing or hiking before? If
you have, how did it go?
B: I haven’t been mountain climbing, but I’ve gone hiking before. There
were cool things to see when I hike, like waterfalls!
B!: Can you tell us what your favourite school subjects are?
B: I’d say writing and reading.
B!: What job do you think would be interesting to have when you
grow up?
B: I actually have no idea. Maybe a writer, an artist, or even a
teacher. Or a lawyer, a musician or a pilot. Maybe a statistician.
B!: What are some outdoor activities you like to do?
B: I like to play soccer, rolling down hills, playing with friends, swimming,
kayaking, ziplining and biking.
B!: Do you have any pets? What would be your dream pet?
B: No, I don’t have any pets. But, a dream pet? Maybe a panda or
a fox? Actually, it would be a dragon because they’re huge and
I would be able to ride on it. I just like dragons overall. There’s
all kinds of dragons like fire dragons and ice dragons. But I would
probably choose a blue and green water dragon (you know, the
ones that work with water). b

tend to just hang out and do their job, without
causing too much trouble. But if you get an ear
ache or water in your ear from swimming, you
start giving them some attention! Nurse Sniggles
has some helpful tips what to do when those things
happen and other ways you can take care of them.

When you are having a bath or shower, have you ever
thought to clean your ears? Maybe not, but they can use some
freshening up—just like the rest of your body! Here’s how:
Lather a little soap between your hands, then place one on
each ear and massage the soap around the back and
front. Use your fingers to follow in the tracks of
your outer ear, but remember not to put
your finger inside your ear canal.
We’ll talk about that more a
little later. Lastly, rinse all
the soap off.

“Okay, so your ears aren’t anything like a
museum, except they do have their share of
wax on display! What’s all the yucky gicky
stuff all about anyway?”
Ear wax serves a very important purpose! Your ear canal
produces wax to protect your ear. After it is produced, it slowly
makes its way to the opening of the ear. Then it either falls out,
or is removed when you wash. You can clean the opening of
your ear gently with a washcloth—but you should never
to use something, like a cotton swab, to try and
remove ear wax. Keep reading...
DO NOT ENTER!
You should never put anything inside
your ear! Not a cotton swab, cleaning
tool, pencil, or anything at all. Cotton
swabs can push wax deeper into
your ear, where it can get stuck!
Poking around in there with anything
is not a good idea. It can irritate the
ear canal and start an infection or even
serious damage. If you think you have
dirt or too much wax in your ear, ask
a parent or caregiver to have a doctor
remove it.
PROTECT
YOUR EARS!
If you get water
stuck in your
ears from
swimming, you
can get special
ear drops to help you get rid of it.
When the sun is beating down, put
on a hat or sunscreen on your ears
to prevent them from getting fried! In
freezing weather, keep them covered
up with a hat or headband to prevent
them from getting frost bitten!

Gather everything you need to start the project
by referring to the list above. If you have other
ideas you’d like to put on your peacock, include
those too! Clear a space on a table, desk or
counter, and you’re ready to go!

Cover the paper towel roll with
a colour of construction paper of
your choice. Trim off any extra
paper that isn’t needed and tape
or glue it down on the roll.

If you choose, make a label for its
belly with the name of your peacock.

Cut the shape of the eyes out
in white construction paper.
Use a pencil and eraser to get
the shape. Glue it onto the
top part of the roll and hold it
in place until it is stuck well.

Cut out a triangle for the orange
beak. Glue it on first, and then
place the mini pom-poms on for
the eyes. If the glue doesn’t hold

A Swing of the Club
“One time my brother and I were practicing golf in our backyard.
Behind our house is this wooded area that we hit our balls into.
I ran to get my ball and was about 10 feet into the woods.
My brother apparently didn’t see me and gave his golf club a
good swing, hitting his ball my direction. (You probably already
know what’s going to happen next.) When I grabbed my ball, I
turned around and was met face-to-face with a golf ball to my
eyebrow. I screamed VERY loud! It hurt so much and my face
began to bleed. My parents hearing me, ran outside to see
what happened. I headed towards the house and met them in
our backyard. My brother felt really awful when he saw what
he’d done. My parents rushed me to the emergency room
where I got stitches. Now I have a line that goes through my
left eyebrow.” Ryan, Age 12

Helping Out Rainbow Haven
“Every summer the kids in our neighbourhood held a fundraiser.
It was for local needy kids so that they could attend a summer
camp called Rainbow Haven. There were about six of us
and we would set up a table in one of our driveways. Some
of our sale items were home-made cookies, lemonade, and
some slightly used toys. We took turns selling the items. By
suppertime, our table would be empty, our cash box full, and
we’d be exhausted! Sometimes we’d even get our photo in
the local newspaper for our efforts! Although we didn’t make
a lot of money, the best part about the activity were the wide
grins on our faces. We held these sales year after year until we
were in our early teens. Years later I was fortunate enough to
meet a former Rainbow Haven Camper. He told me how much
he looked forward to attending the camp. He ate well and did
lots of fun activities. He thanked me and my neighbourhood
friends, on behalf of all the camp kids who were able to attend
because of fundraisers like ours.” Karen Clarke

Surprise on the Trail!
“While camping at a provincial park, my family went to a park
ranger presentation. I didn’t pay much attention to the park’s
history, but I liked hearing about the wildlife. I wanted to see
a deer or moose during our stay, but was satisfied seeing a
family of raccoons wander through our campsite one night. A
few days later, I was on a hiking path with my family when
suddenly I froze. Walking down the trail towards us was not
one, not two, but three black bears! I remembered what the
park ranger said, “Keep calm; don’t run; give space”. Quickly,
we turned around and walked back along the trail, keeping an
eye behind us on the mother bear and her playful cubs. By
the time we returned to the car, we could no longer see them.
“Whew!” joked Dad, “we bear-ly made it!” I laughed, but was
also relieved. I was just glad we had listened to the instructions
of the park ranger and knew exactly what to do. Thanks to that,
we had a safe and fun family camping trip!” Kris MacLeod b

AT COUNTRYVILLE’S PUBLIC LIBRARY.
A DESTINATION FOR A GOOD READ!
On the morning of a warm summer
day, all the birds of the forest were looking
for shade and water because the heat was
intense. That day, the sun was angry and it
didn’t soften the glow of its strong rays.
Under the shade of a large fig tree, some
birds hunkered down from the sun, yet they
did not notice a label on the trunk of the tree.
Suddenly, a crow shouted, “Look! There is an
announcement on the trunk of the tree!”
The birds gathered around as he read: “The fox of
the jungle greets all the birds and is delighted by their
presence. He would be very pleased to sing to them
his special songs.”
The parrot said with amazement, “I did not
hear that the fox was fluent in singing.”
The kite, flapping its wings added, “How can
a fox sing despite the fact that he has never
learned to sing?”
“Let’s go see for ourselves,”
suggested the hen.
But the white dove
wasn’t so sure, “I think
that this is
a ploy by the fox. Have you all forgotten how
many of us have lost our lives by him!?!”
The other birds told the white dove to stop
his annoying comments, replying, “We are
not afraid of anything and we will go to the
fox’s party.”
The birds then flew over to the fox’s house.
The fox could hear the sounds of the birds
as they arrived. He was surprised, but
pleasantly pleased as he opened the door to
offer his greetings to them.
The hen said to her friends, “This fox is
really very kind!”

The parrot said to the fox, “Come on, Fox,
please start your singing.”
Cocky rooster had a better idea, “Let’s first
make an agreement, and then we will be very
pleased to listen to your songs.”
The fox wondering replied, “What
agreement?”
“We need to agree that you will not infringe
upon us again,” retorted the cocky rooster.
So, the cunning fox thought carefully to
himself, ‘It won’t do me any harm to say the
words!’ Turning towards the birds he said,
“I will never harm any of you anymore. I
will sing to you all the time so we will live in
peace forever!”
All the birds were very happy and clapped
in order to celebrate the agreement. But the
cocky rooster was very proud and continued,
“Now we need to sign the peace agreement.
The fox shouted, “Yes, please! Let peace
reign!”
The birds then shouted with joy. “Hey
rooster! Go and hug our friend the fox!”
So, the cocky rooster walked with a puffed
chest towards the fox. But the fox seemed
to forget what he said a little while ago and
thought, ‘What a delicious meal for today!’ He
suddenly pounced towards the rooster, the
rest of the birds flew away terrified.
The cocky rooster flapped his wings in a
fury and took off running with all his might.
The fox continued his pursuit until he heard
the sound of dogs coming over the hill,
thanks to the warning from the white dove.
Sensing danger, the fox fled in haste to his
house and slammed the door.
The birds returned to their friend, the cocky
rooster, soothing his ruffled feathers. They
felt extreme remorse for having not listened
to the white dove. b THE END

Julia’s ringtone sounded. “Apple juice,” it
was Aaron, her best friend who lived across
the country.
“Aaron, why can’t you ever just answer the
phone like a normal person?” she joked.
“Because I’m not a normal person. I’ve
been using my purple rollerblades at the park
for the past three hours.”
“And could you, maybe, tell me more
information about why you’re not normal?”
“Yes, when my helicopter arrives.”
“Helicopter?!” Julia muttered.
“Well, um, my family is driving up to
Cheyenne, so...”
Aaron didn’t reply.
“Aaron?” asked Julia. She took the phone
away from her ear. The words on the screen
read, ‘call ended.’ Uh oh, she thought.
Her phone rang once more.
“Mom! Just STOP calling!”
“This isn’t your mom,” came a deep voice.
“Who is this?”
“Mr. Skymid, but you can call me—you
know what, we’d better stick with Mr. Skymid.
Is this Julia Whefoll?”
“Yes...”
“Great. You are the last known person to be
in contact with Aaron Bracksnitt, correct?”
“Yeah...”
“Good. I’m going to ask you some
questions, and you will answer them honestly.

with 1,000 cans. Do the math questions
across from each row in the puzzle, and
figure out how many cans you’ll have
remaining to drop off at the recycling depot! 1,000

You trade Uncle Freddie 167 cans for his used dartboard.
You put your bags of tin cans in the van to take tomorrow,
and you accidently leave a bag of 52 cans in the garage.
Overnight, someone enters into the garage and steals your
sneakers and 1 bag that held three dozen tin cans.
When you are loading them out at the recycling depot, a bag
rips open when you weren’t looking, and 238 cans roll away.
Three people at the recycling depot feel sorry for you, and
each of them gives you 49 cans for your collection.

Tell us about your family? I have two brothers and two sisters—my oldest sister
is married with a baby. We love doing family trips, vacations, hikes and we
love to play games together. In the summer, my dad takes us boating. We all
wakeboard, kneeboard, and all love tube rides. It’s a lot of fun!
What are some other activities you like to do?
I play three sports: track and field, volleyball
and basketball. I love doing crafts and cooking.
I love baking any type of cookie, and I like
making pasta.

Were you born in the Philippines? Do you have
family there?
Yes, I was born in the Philippines; however,
I only stayed there for a year. I have my
grandparents and uncles, aunts and
cousins there. We usually visit every
3 to 4 years. We are actually going to
the Philippines this coming December.
My parents decided to move to Canada
for better quality of education and job
opportunities.

What are your favourite sports to play?
I like to play basketball and soccer. I usually play
basketball more often because I play it with my dad.
I also play soccer with my friends.
What are some healthy snacks you like to eat?
Does your family do any recycling?
I love to eat fruits, such as apples, bananas and
oranges. I also like to snack on cheese a lot.
For recycling, I collect bottles that we use in our
household and we take them to a local recycling
depot. I’m able to get some money there from the
bottles I collect.
What are some activities you like to do in
your spare time?
I like to play sports or just hang out with
my friends. I also love playing video
games with my friends.
Can you think of an embarrassing moment you could share?
I was playing piano for the choir at our parish and the choir was using a different
songbook. My piano part had some extra sections that the choirbook didn’t have
so everything was overlapping on each other and sounded really weird. b

MEET UNO
“I’m Sabine and this is our family cat, Uno. Her birthday
is on May 1st and she turned 5 years old this year. Uno
is a tuxedo cat because of her black and white colour
combination—like she’s wearing a tuxedo! She has a
black body, white chest and white paws, which is what
qualifies cats to get that name. She is an indoor cat and
my mom takes care of her the most, but sometimes
my brothers and I help by cleaning out the litter box.
Sometimes she lets us snuggle with her. She likes to
sleep in my mom and dad’s room.

FINDING MY FURY FRIEND.
One day my dad, mom and I were driving in our car on
an errand, when my dad spotted some kittens in a box
by the side of the road. We pulled over and saw a note
telling us that they were free. There were three in the box.
We decided to take one, so we played with them for a
little while to see which one we should pick. There was
a boy kitten that kept meowing, Uno
was quieter and snuggled up to us.
So, we decided she was the one to
keep. When my oldest brother saw
us with the kitten, he at first thought
it was a toy! We’ve really enjoyed
having Uno in our family.”
