DEAR FRIENDS,
Welcome to this first issue of our new Carondelet magazine! We are
excited to communicate with you in this new way on behalf of the entire
Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. This collaborative
publication could not have happened without the support of all our
leadership, our sisters and communicators who contributed to this effort.
You will quickly notice that everything in this magazine appears in both
English and Spanish. We chose to do this to show our solidarity with our
Spanish-speaking sisters.
We hope you enjoy the stories inside this issue of Carondelet, and we
thank you for your prayerful and financial support as, together, we strive
to serve the dear neighbor.

This first issue highlights our vibrant Peruvian community. For more than
50 years, our sisters have been ministering to the dear neighbor in Peru.
Their presence and ministry have touched many lives and assisted people
living in extreme poverty.
The leadership of our congregation recently gathered in Lima, Peru,
where we personally experienced our sisters living among and ministering
to those most in need. Their tireless commitment and contagious joy
challenge all of us to serve and advocate for our neighbors. All are doing
the work of the church, which is the mission of Jesus.
If you have received more than one copy of this magazine, it is because
you have generously supported more than one of our provinces. We
invite you to share the extra publication with a friend.

Bienvenidos a esta primera edición de la revista Carondelet! Nos
sentimos emocionadas al comunicarnos con Uds. de esta nueva manera
de parte de toda la Congregación de las Hermanas de San José de
Carondelet. Esta publicación no hubiera sido posible sin el apoyo
de todo el liderazgo, nuestras hermanas y comunicadoras quienes
contribuyeron a este esfuerzo.
Esta primera edición enfoca a nuestra vibrante comunidad en el Perú.
Durante más de 50 años, nuestras hermanas han desempeñado su ministerio
beneficiando al querido prójimo en Perú. Su presencia y ministerio han
tocado muchas vidas y ayudado a los que viven en extrema pobreza.
Hace poco, el liderazgo de nuestra congregación se reunió en Lima, Perú,
donde personalmente compartimos con nuestras hermanas que viven
entre los más necesitados. Su compromiso y gozo contagioso nos desafía
a servir y abogar por nuestro prójimo. Todas llevan a cabo la misión de la
Iglesia, la misión de Jesús.
Se darán cuenta que todo en esta revista aparece en inglés y en español.
Hicimos esto para apoyar a nuestras hermanas de habla español.

ST JOSEPH’S PLACE OPENS
Schenectady, N.Y. – Following our
congregational directive “to unify,
reconcile and act prophetically,”
Sisters Ann Christi Brink, CSJ and
Linda Neil, CSJ responded to an
invitation from a local pastor to
begin a place of “presence and
hospitality” in Hamilton Hill, the
city’s “grittiest” neighborhood. St.
Joseph’s Place opened its doors
in the fall of 2014, a fulfillment of
Fr. Michael Hogan’s dream of a
drop-in center modeled after “the
kitchen table” that is suggestive of
the little kitchen in LePuy, France,
where our founders gathered the
first Sisters of St. Joseph.
As the year progressed, the two
sisters were joined by Sister
Peggy Hoerburger, CSJ and
the trio continued full-swing
collaboration with Schenectady
Inner City Mission to offer what
the organization doesn’t always
have time to provide in its busy
schedule – a place of prayer and
momentary relief, of welcome,

healing and hope. In the words of
Sister Ann: “This mission chose us;
it displaced us. We were so serene
in our mostly middle-class lifestyle
and predictable roles. The new
ministry reminds us daily of Jesus’
call to be ‘with the sheep’ and Pope
Francis’ reminder that we need to
have the ‘smell of the sheep’ on
us. It is, indeed, a way to live with
passion in the present moment!”

THOMAS HOUSE SHELTER
CELEBRATES 30TH
ANNIVERSARY
Los Angeles, Calif. – Thirty years
ago, a few local parishioners
recognized that the homeless
population in the area was
expanding and decided to rent
a few apartments to offer a safe,
short-term place to stay, creating
Thomas House Shelter. Six years
later, in 1992, they asked Catholic
Charities for a staff member to
facilitate a support group. That
person was Sister Kathy Stein, CSJ.
Eventually, the board asked Sister
Kathy to become their full-time
executive director. They could
only cover half of her salary, so
she asked for financial support
from the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Carondelet. “Our community is
called to meet the needs of the
dear neighbor. We walk with the
marginalized. Thomas House was
the perfect fit,” she says.
Through her leadership,Thomas
House is a comprehensive
continuum of care community
where families may stay up to
nine months and receive services
including case management,
counseling, parenting classes,
financial advice and after school
programs, among others.
Sister Kathy continues to promote
the mission as a volunteer. She
quoted a Maxim from Father
Medaille: “Advance good works
until they are almost finished; and
then, whenever possible let them
be completed by someone else
who will receive the honor.”

Los Angeles, Calif. – Hace treinta
años, algunos parroquianos
reconocieron que la población sin
vivienda en su área había crecido
y decidieron alquilar algunos
departamentos para ofrecer un
lugar seguro y de corto plazo.
Así crearon la obra Thomas
House. Luego, en 1992, pidieron
a CARITAS buscar a una persona
para facilitar un grupo de apoyo.
Dicha persona fue Hermana Kathy
Stein, CSJ.
Eventualmente, la junta directiva
le pidio a Hermana Kathy tomar
el cargo de Directora Ejecutiva.
Solo podían pagar la mitad de
su sueldo por lo que ella pidió
apoyo económico de las Hermanas
de San José de Carondelet.
“Nuestra comunidad está llamada
a responder a las necesidades del
querido prójimo. Caminamos con
los que se encuentran al margen
de la sociedad. Thomas House fue

ST. LOUIS PROVINCE EXPANDS
GULU MINISTRY PROJECT
Gulu, Uganda – Since 2008, St.
Louis sisters and associates have
served and supported the Acholi
people of Gulu, Uganda, in the
areas of healthcare, education,
catechetical training and trauma
therapy. Now they are adding water
purification to the list.
In 2014, Associate Carolyn Henry,
CSJA, an analytical chemist, went
to Gulu for 12 weeks to test the
community well water. At the same
time, the province developed
a relationship with Water with
Blessings, an organization that
provides water purification kits and
education to women in developing
countries. Through this providential
partnership, the initiative was born.

clean water with three other families.
safe for drinking. Authorities were
informed but took no action. She
brought a number of filtration kits,
but more would be needed.
At the 2015 province assembly,
sisters and associates donated
$2,500 to purchase 45 portable
filtration systems, as well as a
plethora of homemade crocheted
“filter socks” to protect these lifegiving
units.
In the fall of 2015, Gulu “veteran”
Sister Pat Murphy, CSJ and
“newbie” Sister Patty Clune,
CSJ became official Water with
Blessings educators so they could
implement the program.
“These filters purify water so that
families no longer have to worry
about the diseases that come
from impure drinking water,”
says Sister Patty.
This program has made a
difference quickly and continues
to grow. Sister Jo Ann Geary,
CSJ nurse practitioner at the area
health and maternity clinics, notes
a decrease in typhoid and other
water-related diseases. Water with
Blessings donated 90 additional
filters at the end of 2015.
The Sisters of St. Joseph remain
committed to empowering
the women of Gulu to create a
healthier community – one mother,
one filter at a time.

LA PROVINCIA DE SAN LUIS
AMPLIA EL PROYECTO DE
MINISTERIO EN GULU
Gulu, Uganda – Desde 2008,
las Hermanas y Asociadas de la
provincial de San Luis, MO han
desempeñado su ministerio y
apoyado al pueblo de Acholi en
Gulu, Uganda, en diversas áreas
inlcuyendo salud, educación,
formación en catequesis y terapia
para trauma. Ahora han agregado
purificación de agua a la lista.
El año pasado, la Asociada Carolyn
Henry, CSJA, química analítica,
viajó a Gulu por 12 semanas con
el fin de probar el agua del pozo
comunitario. Al mismo tiempo,
la provincia estableció una
colaboración con la organización
Agua con Bendiciones, quien
provee equipos para la purificación
de agua y educación a mujeres en
los países en desarrollo. A través
de esta colaboración providencial,
nació dicha iniciativa.
El trabajo de la Hermana Carolyn
demostró que un tercio del agua
probada no era potable. Se informó
a las autoridades pero no tomaron
ninguna acción. Ella necesitaba más
equipos de filtración.
Durante la asamblea provincial
en el verano, las hermanas y
asociadas donaron $2,500 para
comprar 45 sistemas portátiles
de filtración, además de tejer a

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
HONOREE
St. Paul, Minn. – Sister Mary
Madonna Ashton, CSJ has been
named a 2016 National Women’s
History Month Honoree.
“At age 92, she is the oldest living
recipient to be honored and only
Sister Mary Madonna Ashton, CSJ Women’s History Month Honoree
the second woman religious to
be honored since the project
began in 1980,” explained Molly
Murphy MacGregor of the National
Women’s History Project.
“Although often overlooked and
undervalued, collectively, this year’s
recipients have dramatically
influenced our public policy and
the building of viable institutions
and organizations,” states the
NWHP’s website.
Sister Mary Madonna has had an
impressive career in public and
private service. She served as
president and CEO of St. Mary’s
Hospital in Minneapolis. After
resigning that position, then
Minnesota Governor-elect Rudy
Perpich asked her to serve as state
Commissioner of Health. “There
was a tremendous amount of
opposition,” recalls Sister Mary
Madonna. She wasn’t a doctor. She
was a woman and a nun. During
consecutive terms she addressed
smoking cessation and AIDS,
becoming highly respected.
After her term, she founded
St. Mary’s Health Clinics, which
still operates free clinics run by
volunteer physicians and nurses
in the Twin Cities metropolitan
area. “We opened our first clinic
in January of 1992. We thought it
would be temporary,” she said.
She joins an impressive list of past
recipients that includes Susan B.
Anthony, Hillary Clinton, Dorothy
Day, Amelia Earhart, Jane Goodall,
Helen Keller, Sally Ride, Eleanor
Roosevelt, Gertrude Stein, Gloria
Steinem and Harriet Tubman.
SE HONRA A UNA HERMANA
DURANTE EL MES NACIONAL
DE HISTORIA DE MUJERES
San Pablo, Minn. -- La Hermana
Mary Madonna Ashton, CSJ ha
sido honrada durante el 2016 Mes
Nacional de Historia de Mujeres.
“A la edad de 92, es la recipiente
de mayor edad y solo la segunda
mujer religiosa de recibir el honor
desde el inicio del proyecto en
1980”, explicó Molly Murphy
MacvGregor del Proyecto Nacional
de Historia de Mujeres. .
“Aunque a veces, pasadas por
alto y sin recibir el mayor valor, las
recipientes de este año han influido
dramáticamente nuestra política
pública y en la construcción de
instituciones y organizaciones,”
declara la página web de NWHP.
La Hermana Mary Madonna
ha realizado una carrera muy
impresionante en el servicio
público y privado. Fue presidenta
y CEO del Hospital Santa María
en Minneapolis. Luego de dejar
el cargo el gobernador-electo de
Minnesota le pidió servir como
Comisaria de Salud del estado.
“Hubo mucha oposición,” recuerda
la Hermana Mary Madonna. No era
doctora. Era mujer y monja. Durante
su cargo se concentró en campañas
contra el tabaquismo y el contagio
del SIDA y llegó a ser muy respetada.
Al terminar su cargo, fundó las
Clínicas de Salud de Saint Mary’s,
las cuales siguen funcionando
como clínicas gratis con la ayuda de
doctores y enfermeras voluntarias
en el área de San Pablo, Minnesota.
“Abrimos nuestra primera clínica en
enero de 1992. Pensamos que sería

PERUVIAN SISTERS SPEND TIME
IN STRATEGIC PLANNING
Lima, Peru – Our founder, Jean
Pierre Medaille SJ, urged the
first sisters to “divide the city” in
order to discover and respond
to the necessities of the dear
neighbor. The sisters in Peru put
this exhortation into practice during
their annual assembly in January
of 2016 in order to continue the
process of evaluation and propose
ministries in the vice province.
Before the assembly, each sister filled
out a survey describing her skills and
strengths, and each local community
proposed different ministries,

identifying strengths, opportunities,
weaknesses, and threats.
During the assembly, the sisters
shared about these proposals
and reflected on whether they
are responding to the signs of the
times in this world that suffers so
much division. As a result of their
deliberations, they have named
“sister investigators” who will find
out more about the details of the
proposals, ensuring that through
their ministries, the sisters can
fulfill the mission to “achieve unity
of neighbor with neighbor and
neighbor with God.”
LAS HERMANAS PERUANAS
PLANIFÍCANDO SU FUTURO
Lima, Perú – Nuestro fundador,
Juan Pedro Medaille SJ, animó a
las primeras hermanas a “dividir
la ciudad” para poder descubrir y
responder a las necesidades del
querido prójimo. Las hermanas en
el Perú pusimos esta exhortación en
práctica durante nuestra asamblea
anual en enero de 2016 para seguir
con el proceso de evaluar y proponer
ministerios en la Vice Provincial.
Hubo dos pasos previos a la
Asamblea: cada hermana respondió
a un formulario describiendo sus
recursos humanos y cada comunidad
local propuso diferentes proyectos
de ministerios, identificando
las fortalezas, oportunidades,
debilidades y amenazas.
Durante la Asamblea hemos
compartido sobre estos proyectos
y reflexionado si ellos responden
a los signos de los tiempos en
este mundo que sufre tanta
división. Como resultado de estas
deliberaciones, tenemos “hermanas
investigadoras” que van a averiguar
más sobre los detalles de las
propuestas para asegurar que
nuestros ministerios cumplan con
la misión de “conseguir la unidad
tanto del prójimo con el prójimo
como del prójimo con Dios.”
SISTER HELPS SENIORS KEEP
THEIR HOMES
Wailuku, Hawaii -- Sister Roselani
Enomoto, CSJ is making an impact
for seniors in Maui County by
leading a project called Kupuna
Kokua Ministry. Simply translated,
it means “helping our elders
maintain their housing.”
Approximately 1,300 individuals/
families hold Section 8 vouchers
in Maui County and over 50% of
them are seniors, age 55 and older.
To help address this need, Sister
Roselani was recently asked by the
Diocesan Office for Social Ministry
to help organize a collaborative
program with parishes in central
Maui, the County Office on
Aging, State Department of
Housing and Human Concerns and
community nonprofit Na Hoaloha
(Loving Friends) to provide a
variety of services for the elderly
of Maui County.
The program’s particular focus is to
be sure that seniors who are living
in federally subsidized housing
pass their annual inspection by
helping them clean their homes
before the inspection occurs.
Kupuna Kokua will respond to any
request from seniors who are in
need of help, networking with local
organizations to help people as
quickly as possible.
“I’m pleased to have been part
of the initial organizing of this
program,” said Sister Roselani.
“While it is still a ‘new’ venture for
most of our parishes, witnessing
the growth in the number of
volunteers who are becoming a
part of this ministry warms my
heart! Kupuna Kokua is making a
difference in the lives of our seniors
and their families.”

para que organizara un programa
de colaboración de parroquias en

NUESTRA PRESENCIA EN
EL PERÚ
El ministerio de las Hermanas de San
José en Perú se inició en 1962 cuando
14 Hermanas de Estados Unidos,
enfermeras y educadoras, viajaron a
Lima en respuesta a un pedido del
Nuncio Apostólico de Perú,
Arzobispo, Romolo Carboni. A pesar
de los desafíos de extrema pobreza,
idioma, y cultura, las hermanas
hicieron todo lo posible para mejorar
las vidas del pueblo a quien servían.
Actualmente, 25 hermanas continúan
el ministerio desempeñando su
ministerio en las ciudades de Lima,
Tacna, Iquitos y Cusco. Hay seis
norteamericanas y las demás son
peruanas. Ocho de las hermanas
peruanas son menores de 40 años, lo
cual manifiesta el interés continuo en
la vida consagrada entre las jóvenes.
Las Hermanas suelen hablar de
su ministerio como “ministerio
de presencia,” sin importar
dónde y cómo ponen en práctica
dicho ministerio.
“Ponemos en práctica la opción por
el pobre,” dice Sally Harper, CSJ
directora de la Vice provincia de
Perú. “Mucho de nuestro ministerio
no se ve, pero impacta al pueblo. A
veces, nuestro don es presencia
personal, de uno a uno. En
norteamérica, existe la tendencia y
deseo de “arreglar el problema”.
Pero en Perú, lo importante es
acompañar al pueblo.”
Sí, hay mucha pobreza y muchos los
desafíos que la acompañan, pero a
pesar de todo, las Hermanas
mantienen su compromiso de
ayudar al pueblo de Dios espiritual,
emocional y físicamente.

The Sisters of St. Joseph
of Carondelet’s ministry
in Peru began in 1962
when 14 American sisters –
nurses and educators – traveled
there in response to a request
by the Apostolic Nuncio in Peru,
Archbishop Romolo Carboni.
Working through challenges posed
by extreme poverty, as well as
language and culture differences,

the sisters did all they could to help
improve the lives of those they served.
Today, 25 sisters continue this work,
with communities of sisters in the
cities of Lima, Tacna, Iquitos and
with one sister in Cusco. Six are
North Americans and the others are
all Peruvians. Eight of the Peruvian
sisters are under the age of 40,
demonstrating a continuing interest
in vowed life among the young.

The sisters often speak of their
work as “a ministry of presence,”
regardless of where or how they put
that gift into practice.
“We really practice the option for
the poor here,” remarks Sister Sally
Harper, CSJ director of the vice
province of Peru. “So much of our
work is behind the scenes, but it
really has an impact on people.
Often, our gift is the one-on-one
presence. In North America, there
is a tendency to have a ‘let’s fix it’
approach. But here, what helps is
walking with the people.”
Yes, there is great poverty and
the challenges that go with it, but
it is easy to see how the sisters’
commitment to caring for God’s
people is helping – spiritually,
emotionally and physically.

and Ralph
Scorpio,
who work in
communication
and development
respectively for our St.
Paul province, were able
to visit Peru to interview
sisters accompanied by a
professional videographer.
They visited most of our
Peruvian communities, and their
photos and stories can be found
on the following pages. Their trip
was funded by a generous grant
from the GHR Foundation.
Iquitos
PERU
Peru is a place of incredible
diversity with great wealth and
tremendous poverty. It offers an
intensity of colors and scents, heat
and humidity, sumptuous food
that any foodie would envy, and a
cacophony of sounds that never
quite seemed to fade into white
noise. The architecture ranges from
the palatial Government Palace
originally built in 1535 over a huaca
(an indigenous site of veneration),
to sprawling communities
comprised of small cardboard
sheds with dirt floors and without
electricity or plumbing that seem to
spread daily up available hillsides
like a dropped cup of paint.
Dogs run free, traveling happily
in packs robust with conversation,
companionship and a citywide
early morning alarm system. Cats
also roam free with one city park
hosting hundreds that casually view
Lima
visiting tourists with
feigned indifference
that suggests royalty
holding court.
The people we met in the
communities served by
the sisters, while
poor, are faithfilled
and
hardworking.
They exude
a delightful
warmth
punctuated
Tacna
by seemingly
omnipresent
smiles.
It is evident that the people are
abundantly grateful to and for
the sisters. They expressed their
appreciation for our presence, too,
as if visiting their communities,
acknowledging their lives,
and telling their stories was an
affirmation of some sort.

el pueblo que conocimos, aunque
pobre, trabaja duro y está lleno de
fe. Refleja un encanto calor humano

Hermanas. También expresaron su
aprecio por nuestra presencia, como si
visitando su comunidad, reconociendo

A Message to You
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF OUR VICE PROVINCE
DEAR FRIENDS,
The estimated cost to support a Sister of St. Joseph here
in Peru for a year is $10,000. But because salaries in Peru
are low, even for professionals such as school teachers and
administrators, the sisters’ salaries alone are not enough
to cover all of the expenses for our life and ministry, our
health and well-being as well as the education of our
younger sisters.
But there is another very important factor that must be
taken into consideration. We, as part of the Church of Latin
America, have made a preferential option for the poor. If we
are faithful to that option and choose to live and serve among the poor,
we will never earn enough money to cover our living expenses and be
able to contribute to the support of our ministries. That is why we need
economic help. Our salaries alone cannot support the work we do in Peru.
Yet, even with limited resources, my sisters in Peru always think of what
we can do for those with less. We want to continue to invest in our
ministries in such a way that they are not just a handout, not a giveaway.
We need to continue to invest in the people with whom we serve in our
neighborhoods, parishes, schools, institutions and organizations. We try
to walk with them in a way that encourages growth and development and
preserves their dignity.
That is why the sisters in Peru turn to you, our friends and
supporters of the Sisters of St. Joseph in North America, for
help. We need to raise $1 million so that the interest from
the Peru Support Fund will cover our living and ministry
expenses that are not covered by our salaries. Please
consider using the attached envelope to support our work
in Peru by making a designated gift through your local
province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Nuestra Congregación calcula que cuesta $10,000 por año para apoyar
una Hermana de San José en el Perú. Debido a que los sueldos en el Perú
son bajos tanto para profesionales como profesores o administradoras, los
sueldos de las hermanas no son suficientes para cubrir todos los costos de
nuestra vida y ministerio, nuestra salud y bienestar, además de la educación
de nuestras hermanas jóvenes.
Pero hay otro factor importante que necesitamos tomar en consideración.
Nosotras, como parte de la Iglesia en América latina, hemos hecho una opción
preferencial por los pobres Si somos fieles a esta opción y escogemos vivir y
servir entre la gente empobrecida, nunca tendremos suficiente dinero para
cubrir nuestro costo de vivencia y contribuir al apoyo de nuestros ministerios.
Esta es la razón por qué necesitamos ayuda económica. Nuestras sueldos no
pueden apoyar el servicio que realizamos en el Perú.
Pero, aún con recursos limitados, mi hermanas aquí en el Perú siempre están
pensando en qué podemos hacer para las personas que tienen menos
posibilidades. Queremos seguir invirtiendo en nuestros ministerios de tal
manera que no son una limosna. Necesitamos seguir invirtiendo en las
personas con quienes servimos en nuestros barrios, parroquias, escuelas,
instituciones y organizaciones. Intentamos caminar con ellas de una manera
que anime crecimiento y desarrollo y conserve su dignidad.
Esta es la razón por qué las hermanas del Perú nos dirigimos a ustedes,
nuestros amigos y benefactores en América del Norte, para ayudar.
Necesitamos incrementar un fondo de $1, 000,000 para que el interés
del fondo pueda cubrir los costos de vivencia y ministerio que no están
cubiertos por nuestros sueldos. Tenga la bondad de usar el sobre adjunto

Sister Anne Davis, CSJ tells of a
student she helped at Canto Chico –
a drop in after-school program for
children living in poverty on the hill
above the sister’s dwelling. “When
I suggested a very young student
correct a wrong answer, she pulled
out an old, mangled toothbrush
to remove the pencil lead. After
I suggested she use an eraser,
another young student sitting
nearby chastised me saying, ‘Don’t
you know she’s poor? She doesn’t
have an eraser!’ I went shopping for
supplies that night!”

Great hospitality is a staple in this
three-story Lima home rebuilt to
accommodate sisters,visitors and
assembly meetings.

Lima
Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru.
A coastal city with a population of almost
10 million – nearly a third of the country – it
is the third largest city in the Americas. In Lima, our
congregation has 17 sisters in four communities. Their
work includes education and after-school programs,
hospital chaplaincy, prison ministry, hospitality and
administration at the National Conference of Religious.
Lima es la capital y la ciudad más grande de Perú. Una
ciudad costera con una población de casi 10 millones,
casi un tercio de la población nacional, es la tercera en
las Américas. En Lima, nuestra congregación tiene 17
Hermanas en cuatro comunidades. Su trabajo incluye
educación y programas después de la escuela, capellanía

A MINISTRY OF PRESENCE
Much of the sisters’ life in Peru
is about presence. Walking with
the people, being with them in
their joys, needs, and sorrows,
speaks directly to their mission:
moving always toward profound
love of God and neighbor without
distinction. Even after waking up
before dawn to prepare for Palm
Sunday celebrations, celebrating
with and attending to the larger
parish community, the sisters
made sure to visit housebound
parishioners to let them know they
are cared for and not forgotten.

Iquitos
Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest
and the fifth largest city in Peru. Located in the
Amazon Basins, the city is situated along the
Amazon, Nanay and Itaya rivers. Three sisters live in
community, providing parish support and programs,
pastoral services, and hospitality to the Catholic
community. They are a vital and much appreciated
presence in their neighborhood.
Iquitos es la ciudad más grande en la selva tropical
peruana y la quinta más grande del país. Ubicada en
la cuenca del Amazonas, la ciudad está situada al lado
de los ríos Amazonas, Nanay e Itaya. Tres hermanas
viven en comunidad proveyendo apoyo y programas
en la parroquia, presencia comunitaria, servicios
pastorales y hospitalidad a la comunidad católica.

LIFE IN TACNA
In Tacna, the dogs’ early morning
alarm system could begin at 3:00
a.m. as people start navigating
their way to work. In a country
without social services, if a person
doesn’t work, they don’t eat. The
people are hard-working and
entrepreneurial. By 6:30 a.m. the
children, carrying their books in
huge backpacks, move down the
make-shift pathways from the
hillside community of paper shacks
that spread above the sisters’ home.
“Unconstrained by separation
of church and state, the school
is based on the sisters’ charism.
Steeped in CSJ values, the
school has a tremendous
influence on the students, the
teachers and the parents.”

OUR PRESENCE IN
Tacna
It was the women of the community
who pushed to again become
Peruvian after experiencing
oppression while under Chilean
rule. These figures recall the price
paid by the people of Tacna as
they fought for independence.
The monument is situated high
above the city and close to the
border. The silver figures almost
seemed to dance as they caught
the sun’s rays.
Tacna is a city with a mild desert climate near the
southern border with Chile. Fiercely patriotic,
the Tacneños won their independence in
1824 after 50 years of Chilean occupation. The locals,
including the sisters, are quick to share this turbulent
part of the city’s history. Three of our sisters live here
in a shared community. Their ministries include K-12
education and after-school programs with a strong
and peaceful presence.
Tacna es una ciudad con un clima desértico templado
cerca de la frontera con Chile. Fervientemente
patrióticos, los Tacneños ganaron su independencia
en 1824 tras 50 años de ocupación chilena. Los
lugareños, incluyendo las Hermanas, siempre están
dispuestas a contar sobre esa turbulenta época de su
historia. Tres de nuestras Hermanas viven ahí en una
comunidad compartida. Sus ministerios incluyen
educación de primaria y una presencia pacífica.

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet do not fall into
easy categories. We minister in “everything that a
woman is capable of doing.”
We are many things.

We are... scholars, caregivers,
spiritual directors, teachers, board

The list could take up all the
pages of this magazine and then
some. Our congregation is made
up of many individuals, but we
are joined by a common spirit
and gifts or charism. We are
Carondelet.
There are many orders of
Catholic sisters. There are
many congregations in the
family of St. Joseph. We know
that each community has its own
special personality and identity
that connects its members in all
the corners of the world where
they minister. As CSJs, we are
joined in communion. We are
Carondelet.
Somos... eruditos, atendemos a
enfermos/ancianos, directoras
espirituales, educadoras, miembros
de juntas directivas, inversionistas,
músicos, artistas, médicos,
abogadas, activistas, consejeras,
enfermeras, organizadoras de
comunidades, líderes...

Reflections
It was Palm Sunday. The knock at the door came at 3:00 a.m.
Sister Maritza joined some of the young men of the parish to help
create the glorious sand art that the pilgrims would walk over as
they entered church for mass. By 7:00 a.m., Sisters Marie, Felicita,
Maritza and our translator Anne moved to their city’s center, helping
distribute palm art created the day before. The entire community,
carrying palms and singing joyfully, processed their way through the
streets toward the Church. The holiness of the day, punctuated by
the reverence of this community of believers, was palpable.
