Summer Tune-Up
Like any mechanical system, having
a tune-up on your HVAC system will
pay dividends in the long run.
Residential Only. Limited time offer.
HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB NEWS AUGUST 2017
Summer is wrapping up and children will be returning to school
soon. Watch out for our neighborhood children and “drive like your
child lives here.” This is not just in our neighborhood, but anywhere
we travel watch for pedestrians, bicyclers and even animals. The
incidents which have taken place this summer in Hearthstone are only
a reminder of how important it is for everyone to slow down, be safe
and follow the rules. Nothing is so important to risk a life.
It has been a hot summer and the heat is not over yet. It is such a shame
what the intense South Texas heat and sun does to our foliage and flowers.
We can do our part by watering to meet the needs of our yards and plants
early in the morning before the sun rises. Watering early prevents water
from evaporating quickly, as it would during the day. Watering late gives
opportunity for fungi and disease to take hold of our plants. Water longer
and less often to encourage deep roots and healthier plants. As I have
mentioned in the past, soaker hoses or a regular hose on a slow drip work
great for this. Of course, there goes the water bill, but it would be a shame
to let the grass, plants and flowers waste away and succumb to the heat,
after many of us worked so hard. Keep watering wisely, pray for rain and
thank God for a breeze.
Caring for our garden beds despite the heat is certainly important right
now. Mulch your beds with at least 3 inches of your favorite mulch to help
keep plant roots cooler, preserve moisture and prevent run off. Try not
pile mulch against the base of plants, as it can cause moisture retention
around the base of plants and trees and result in rotting. Be sure and
feed your soil which helps improve the soils quality and in exchange we
have healthier plants.
After so many of our lawns suffered last year from the those pesky sod
webworms, keep an eye out for those critters, cinch bugs and lawn
fungi. The effect of these problems on our lawns can be so unsightly
and devastating. Our yard is still trying to recover from the loss of
most of our grass. This type of damage gives opportunistic weeds an
advantage and look out, before we know it, the weeds have taken over
and are choking out our grass. Watch your lawn for problems and treat
early to avoid more problems. Check with the County Extension Office
or your favorite garden center for the proper products to treat your
lawns specific needs.
4
Although it seems like it is entirely too hot to think about getting out in
your gardens and planting anything, it is time to begin planning for fall
gardening. Whether you enjoy vegetables or flowers it is time to plan.
There are some seeds which can be placed in the ground now for fall,
but for the most part it is all about planning and purchasing seeds now
for September planting.
I encourage everyone, no matter your age or activity level, to stay cool
and well hydrated. Take frequent breaks in the shade, if outside in the
heat and cool down slowly. Never push yourself in this heat, it can
have devastating effects on our health. It is important to know when
to rest or stop your activity. Do not forget your pets and keep plenty
of cool fresh water available and monitor them frequently, especially
if they are not indoors. Exercise and walk early or late in the day when
temperatures may be cooler. Keep birdbaths full for our wildlife, as
water evaporates quickly with our heat. Keep bird feeders full and
hummingbird feeders full and cleaned regularly.
The Hearthstone Garden Club will resume meeting this month on
Tuesday evening, August 15 th at 7 PM at Hearthstone Country Club.
We will begin our new year with an Ice Cream Social and membership
drive. Check out our Ad in this issue of the Hearthstone News! We
really look forward to this year and invite anyone interested to join
us. We have an exciting year ahead of us and will be celebrating our
“40 th Year as a Garden Club” with special activities and events. If you
have been a member in the past, I encourage you to consider returning
or at least a visit. Come out and meet our Board and great members.
We have members of all ages and who knows you might make a new
friend, I certainly have made many friends since I joined. We have
such a wonderful and talented group of ladies and it is an enjoyable
experience being in our garden club. I would not trade the experience,
nor the friendships I have developed for anything.
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me or any of
our members. I do ask that you identify yourself if sending a text or
email. Thank you for your support of the Hearthstone Garden Club for
the past 40 years!
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR HARRIS COUNTY CONSTABLE
The Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is now offering a class
on Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). RAD is one of the best women’s
self-defense courses available. It’s a program based on realistic selfdefense
tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive self-defense
course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk
reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of handson
defensive training. If you’re interested in more information and
signing up, go to this link:
www.constablepct5.com/2016/06/16/rad-classes-available
Make sure if you or your family goes on vacation to put in a “Vacation
Watch” with our department. That way you’ll know your house is being
watched by our patrol deputies. You can fill out a vacation watch form
online here:
Or you can call our dispatch at 281-463-6666.
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like
you see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative
light poles along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole
number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing
the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying
on during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google
streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported
to PCMI at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report
it, so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
TRASH DAYS
Trash days are Tuesdays and Fridays with recycling pickup on
Fridays. If you have questions, call 281-368-8397.
BOARD MEETING
Board Meetings are now bi-monthly, usually on the 3 rd Wednesday at
7:00 PM. Hearthstone Country Club.
LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with
their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on
each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores
have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that
would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
WEBSITE
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy
to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including
HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of
association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would
like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is
the address. It is still at www.hearthstonehoa.org.
HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS
Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening
page. You will be automatically added to the email group. This group
will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members
between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more
than one email address, just register again with each address you want
included in the group. The addresses will not be sold, distributed or
used for any purpose other than association business. Your address
will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to
the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of
Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need
to do so again.
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age
or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on
your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front
of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are
there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys
in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so
that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go
to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the
computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for
solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that
they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up
an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911
ROSEHILL
CHRISTIAN
SCHOOL
For the second year in a
row, Rosehill has been a top
contender for the coveted
TAPPS Henderson Cup.
The Henderson Cup is a
year-long contest for “Best
Overall School” in the state
that takes into account all
points accumulated in sports,
fine arts and academic
competitions throughout the
year. After moving up from
TAPPS classification 2A to 3A
this season, RCS knew that
the road to the Henderson Cup would be a challenging task and that the
competition in 3A would be very strong. In 2016, RCS was the State Runnerup
in the 2A Henderson Cup sweepstakes by 15 points. For our move to 3A
this year, administrators, coaches, students, parents and teachers joined
together to make a school-wide, concerted effort to win the highly soughtafter
trophy. RCS collected points by placing at the state level in a wide
array of extracurricular events, including: State Champions in Baseball
(back-to-back), Cheer and Girls’ Track; State Runner-up in Vocal Music;
Third place in Academics (State Champions in Speech) and Dance; Fourth
place in Band; Fifth place in One Act Play and Art; Bi-district Champions in
Girls’ Basketball and playoff points in Volleyball. It was a groundbreaking
year and even though we crushed our point totals from the previous year,
RCS ended up placing third in the overall Henderson Cup competition by a
mere three points. This third place finish was the strongest TAPPS showing
by RCS in our school’s history. Additionally, we were State Champions for
the second year in a row in overall Fine Arts events by over a 30% margin
over all other TAPPS 3A schools. The Henderson Cup is the ultimate team
event and it demonstrates how the body of Christ works. Each part of the
body is important and together those parts serve an even greater purpose.
Though RCS came in third place in the Henderson Cup, we feel like true
winners, because we accomplished this extraordinary goal together.
Furthermore, coming so close to winning will only make us stronger and
more unified as we look to the 2017-18 season.
Besides the Henderson Cup, TAPPS also recognizes the top coaches and
male and female competitors in the state in Athletics and Fine Arts. These
elite honors are extremely difficult to receive, as all TAPPS schools can
nominate competitors from any sport or fine art and the top individuals in
the state are then voted on by an executive TAPPS panel. We are pleased to
announce, that for only the third time in school history, the TAPPS 3A State
Fine Arts Female Student of the Year is our own Ashley Alexander. Ashley’s
2016-17 TAPPS accomplishments are undeniable: State Champion in
Original Oratory (Speech); State Runner-up In Ready Writing and 5 th Place
in Literary Criticism (Academics); Gold Medal in Instrumental Piano Solo
(Class I); State Champion in Black & White Photography (Art); State All-
Star Crew for One Act Play and she even served as a state accompanist
for TAPPS Vocal Music, not to mention her TAPPS accolades throughout
her high school career in these same disciplines. Furthermore, Ashley has
accomplished all of this while earning the title of RCS Valedictorian, with
a smile on her face and the love of Jesus in her heart, shining through to
everyone who meets her. We are so proud of you, Ashley! RCS loves you
and we cannot wait to see how God uses all of your talents as you set sail
for the next stage of your journey. Congratulations!
SHOE DRIVE BENEFITING AARF HOUSTON
WWW.AARFHOUSTON.ORG
Girl Scout Cadettes, Faith Wong and Grace Wong, are concerned about
the increasing number of dogs roaming neighborhoods - many ending
up in euthanizing shelters. To help with non-euthanizing efforts, Faith
and Grace wanted to educate the community on ways to prevent loose
and/or lost dogs and offer some suggestions in doing so. As part of their
Silver Award Project (the highest honor of a Girl Scout Cadette), they are
planning organizing and executing the Shoe Drive with AARF Houston and
sorting process while also informing people ways to prevent our animal
friends from being loose or lost.
CYPRESS ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also
friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others.
Cypress Assistance Ministries is a local non-profit organization serving the Cy-Fair area for
over 25 years. CAM offers assistance to those in need by providing financial assistance,
organization is its volunteers. Currently we are in need of volunteers in many different areas
of the ministry. If you would like more information on how to become involved, please
contact Tara Rauch at 281-955-7684 or tarar@cypressassistance.org. We look forward to
hearing from you! For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries,
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish
Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using
computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or
other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community
service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
GIVE AN HOUR NETWORK
PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in
Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops
suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given
the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery,
many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to
professional counselors. Give an Hour provides services that are separate
from the military establishment, offering options to service members who
might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care.
Give an Hour is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental
health professionals providing free counseling services to returning
troops and their families. Give an Hour offers services to veterans of the
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members
are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents,
siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering
a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service.
Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress
Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling.
Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in
receiving services through Give an Hour are encouraged to call 281-855-
1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families
link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another
provider in your area.
The mission of ABWA is to bring together businesswomen of diverse
occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and
others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education,
networking support and national recognition. The ABWA Woman of the Year
Award highlights women that have demonstrated outstanding leadership
and mentorship within their local league, the ABWA organization, their
