NeWburyPOrT – The call
from bloomberg LP, proposing
to purchase WNbP from Port
broadcasting Oldies The Legends,
came as a total surprise to
general manager Carl strube and
operations manager Pete Falconi,
who have owned the local radio
station since 2009.
“We have a plan for the whole
company,” strube said. “but we
never thought about selling only
this station.” WNbP was the first
station bought by strube and
Falconi.
Port broadcasting announced
last week that “WNbP is in
the process of being sold to
bloomberg radio. The new
owners have put their format on
the station beginning August 1.”
bloomberg is buying the
Newburyport station for a
reported price of $1 million,
which Falconi wrote in an email “is
in line with the current industry
formula based on multiples of
broadcast cash flow.”
The Federal Communications
Commission has 90 days to
approve the sale.
“We are excited to extend our
broadcast footprint in the boston
market,” said Al mayers, global
head of bloomberg radio and
Television. “Programming this
station in Newburyport gives us
the opportunity to provide timely
financial information and world
news to our listeners during
their commute to and from the
North shore. Over the next few
weeks, technical upgrades will be
completed to make the experience
even better.”
selling the Newburyport
station gave its owners sleepless
nights, Falconi said. “What do
we do now?” he said. “WNbP is
an institution. but ultimately it is
a business.”
executives said last week buying
Recycling IQ Program in Newburyport
NeWburyPOrT –
Newburyport’s recycling, energy,
and sustainability Department
recently received a grant called
The recycling IQ Kit through
the massachusetts Department
of environmental Protection
(DeP) to drastically improve
residential recycling. This grant
will help educate residents to
be sure to include everything
that should go in recycling, and
nothing that should not.
Across massachusetts there is
a problem with “contamination”
which is a catch phrase to
describe things that don’t belong
in our recycling carts. Plastic
bags are the biggest problem in
Newburyport, which can shut
down operations in our recycling
processing plants, as they wrap
around the recycling equipment.
The recycling IQ Kit combines
an aggressive campaign of
education and direct feedback
curbside. Included in the
education efforts are a direct mail
piece to residents, newspaper
ads, social media ads, as well as
banners and sandwich boards
that will be placed around the
city. using grant funds, a team
will go out to implement the
curbside feedback program.
“I encouraged and supported
applying for this grant as we
have a strong recycling and
energy department but we can
always improve our efforts, this
is best accomplished through
increased education. The waste
disposal market is currently very
unstable and unpredictable and
we must do everything we can
to help mitigate and insulate
Newburyport from the drastic
cost increases anticipated in
the next few years,” said mayor
Donna Holaday.
While trash costs the city
money and recycling saves the
city money, both need to be done
correctly to be of benefit. by not
recycling everything that we can
and should, residents cost the city
~$.04 per pound of recyclable
material. This may not sound like much,
but if every household in Newburyport
failed to recycle just two pounds every
week (a conservative estimate!), it is close
to $32,000 tax dollars wasted each year.
But there are other even greater financial
incentives for doing all we can.
Next year, both the City’s collection and
trash disposal contracts expire. The city’s
recycling office will spend a great deal of
time crafting a scope of work document
to go out to any interested parties to bid
on. One key component to how much (or
little) prospective vendors will bid is the
amount of contamination in our recycling
and the amount of recycling in our trash.
Recycling “purity” is a major issue for
fines and safety. Recyclable material in
trash is a major issue for fines. This grant
will educate residents, enforce ordinances,
and enable Newburyport to have a better
bargaining position when our solid waste
contract comes up next year.
“The timing for this program is perfect.
By improving our recycling by both
recycling everything we should in our
single-stream curbside collection and
nothing that we shouldn’t, we will have
a much better opportunity to get better
rates when our contract is negotiated this
winter. By participating in this program,
we show that we are committed to
compliance with DEP regulations and
our collectors and haulers will not face
the potential of fines for our loads,” said
the Mayor.
poetry of John Greenleaf Whittier
on Sunday, August 13th from 3-
4:30 p.m. The poetry readings will
take place in the Victorian garden
of the Whittier Home Museum, 86
Friend Street, Amesbury.
“There’s something wonderful
of the Whittier Home Association, Bryant, Gus Reusch, Bill Plante Jr., Claire Breger-Belsky, Lainie
“We hope that people from all over Senechal, Harris Gardner, Michiko Nemoto, Alfred Nicol, Izumi
will join us in Whittier’s habitat Nemoto, Cynthia Costello, Toni Treadway, Rhina P. Espaillat
and listen to the free flow of his
thoughts, the simplicity of his structure and his expression of old New England life.”
The program will feature readings of Whittier’s poetry as well as original works. Awardwinning
Newburyport poet Rhina P. Espaillat, who has published poems, essays, short stories
and translations in numerous magazines and over sixty anthologies, will share Whittier’s
“Response” as well as one or two of her own short poems.
Other featured poets include Harris Gardner, founder of the poetry organization Tapestry
of Voices, who will read “The Voices,” Lainie Senechal, the first Poet Laureate of Amesbury,
will read “Stanzas for the Times”, and two of her own poems, “To Mr. Whittier,” and “The
Hummingbird in Whittier’s Garden.” Alfred Nicol will read “The Rendition,” “Don’t Let
Them In” by Saladhin Amed, and “Empathy” by A.E.Stallings. Poet Toni Treadway will read
“What of a Day,” and Paulette Demers Turco will read Whittier’s “How the Women went from
Dover” and her own poem, “She had to Leave.”
Local Whittier aficionado Skye Wentworth, has chosen to read “Tents on the Beach,” Gus
Reusch, curator of the Whittier Birthplace/Museum, “The Christian Slave,” Chris Bryant,
president of the Whittier Home Association, will read “The Yankee Girl” and Peter Bryant “In
School Days.”
This year, we’re pleased to include the exceptional talent of our young-and-upcoming local
poets. Reading their original poems are the winners of Whittier Home’s 2nd Annual “Gathering
of Verses” Poetry Contest Angela Messina and Isabelle DaRosa, students at the Whittier
Regional Vocational High School. Each will respectively read their award-winning poems,
“Malignant,” and “Sunshine.” Thomas Frame, a third-grader at Sparhawk School and winner
of Amesbury Library’s Poetry Contest, will read his winning poem, “The Holy House.”
An informal reception with light refreshments will follow the readings. In the event of
inclement weather, the program will be held in the Whittier Home’s meeting room. Admission
is free and open to the public. For more information, call Harris Gardner, (617) 306-9484 or
broadcasts on 92.9 WBOS in
Brookline, iHeartMedia’s 1200
Bloomberg has also signed a
Strube said Bloomberg wanted
to be in the Newburyport market
because many of the North Shore
commuters headed into Boston
work in the financial sector.
The content of Bloomberg
radio focuses on the financial
markets and business news. With
more than 2,700 journalists
and analysts in more than 120
countries, “Bloomberg Radio’s
resources are unparalleled,” the
station’s web site announced.
Bloomberg will also be good
for Newburyport’s image, Strube
and Falconi said. “It will put
Newburyport on the map,”
Falconi said.
Every 15 minutes, the
Bloomberg stations in Boston
and Newburyport will report on
the Newburyport weather and
traffic, they said. That frequent
exposure will make listeners want
to visit Newburyport.
WNBP, the Legends, which
broadcast music from the 1950s
and 1960s, has been part of the
Newburyport community for
decades. The sale brought to an
end to the Oldies format that had
been heard on the station since it
evolved from Adult Standards in
2013.
“We have been entrenched in
the community for the last eight
and a half years,” Falconi said.
In addition to broadcasting local
news, promoting local events,
businesses, artists and authors,
the station is the organizer and
sponsor of the annual Cruisin’
the 50’s Classic Car Show on
State Street.
This year, its sixth event, will be
held on Thursday, Aug. 17, from
of classic cars, the event features
live music. It is also sponsored
by the Greater Newburyport
Chamber of Commerce and St.
Jean’s Credit Union.
The radio station staff learned
of the proposed sale the last week
of July. Win Damon, the station’s
top on-air personality, has said
he was surprised. He has been
Newbury for the first time this
year.
“It is a great time for veterans
to get to know one another and
make new friends,” said luncheon
organizer Donnie Jarvis.
The luncheon was originally
organized by Frank Ventura.
When Ventura died two years
ago, Jarvis, a friend, “stepped up
the plate to keep this luncheon
alive,” said Jennifer Lacroix with
Yankee Homecoming.
Ventura’s son, Dan, who is
the Newburyport branch office
manager for Fairway Mortgage,
agreed that Fairway would be the
lead sponsor of the luncheon.
“I take a lot of pride in doing
this event,” Jarvis said.
On the red, white and blue
tablecloths that covered the tables
was a note to each veteran signed
by employees of the Veterans
Administration. The notes read,
“Dear Veteran, I salute your
courage, your honor and most
of all your sacrifice. Please accept
this special thank you from one
American who truly appreciates
your willingness to serve our
country and what it cost you.”
The veterans enjoyed a lunch
Bye Bye WNBP
cole slaw from the Rusty Can
prepared by Vets and Veggies,
Vets and Veggies, which
operates a farm in Athol, provides
housing for veterans interested in
learning how to become a farmer
of sustainable crops.
“At the luncheon, we are not
only feeding veterans today,
but we are supporting other
veterans,” Jarvis said.
The luncheon was opened by
four Coast Guard officers who
presented the flags. “It’s good to
have the young guys honor the
veterans,” Jarvis said.
Marianne Talty of Salisbury
sang the national anthem.
The veterans were served
by Yankee Homecoming
of six novels of horror and suspense:
Fear, all currently available in trade
darkness.
A STRAIGHT A’S FOR SAFETY
advertise@thetowncommon.com
Holy Family Hospital has earned another
“A” for patient safety. In fact, it’s received
Straight A’s from Leapfrog, an independent,
nationally recognized health care industry
watchdog, since the program launched in
the spring of 2012.
Holy Family Hospital is one of only 72 hospitals
in the entire nation to achieve this distinction.
You can rest assured that if you or a loved one is admitted to Holy Family Hospital
in Methuen or Haverhill – whether it’s for an emergency, surgical or intensive care,
you’ll be cared for by doctors, nurses and staff with an outstanding track record of
keeping patients safe from preventable harm.

visit Holyfamilyhospital.org
holyfamilyhospital.org
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement and the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Together, these
performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. Calculated under the
guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce the grades.

Why Hire a REALTOR?
By John McCarthy, Rowley Realty
Why should I list my house with own. expanding your audience is came in too low. The easiest thing in
you? I get this question quite a bit. Pets, important. A good Animals, reALTOr® will the world Plus
is to yell and say forget it.
I think in any field it is important present your home to anyone and reALTOrs® know how to deal with
National Association of reALTOrs
recently did an advertising blitz
that I thought was spot on. They
showed someone calling his doctor
with a knife asking where he should
make the incision to perform surgery
on himself. The premise of the
commercial was to show that it isn’t
always best to “do it yourself”. Was
the commercial a little extreme?
Probably, but the point came across.
While you might be able to sell
your home on your own a good
reALTOr® provides a you with a
unique skill set.
Here are some reasons why it’s
essential to work with a reALTOr®.
surprises. For example, every seller
is prepared to pay a reALTOr® a
commission but are you aware that
Value, Enjoyment And Savings
massachusetts taxes every seller at the
social media outlets. Conveying
that to others isn’t easy and making
sure that we hit all these outlets can
mean you connect to buyers that
you may not reach selling on your
A reALTOr® will know where to
advertise to buyers and where buyers
are coming from to see your home.
What are the market conditions in
your town or even neighborhood?
maybe your neighborhood isn’t as
fantastic as you think due to the
fact that the local dump is down the
street. Is it a seller’s market? If so, tell
me why and show me what has sold
in the area. How long are homes in
town staying on the market? What is
the sale price v. the listing price? What
is going to be the biggest challenge in
selling my house?
We are able to give you an honest
assessment of your home, not only
on the price but what you will face
in objections from a would-be buyer.
most importantly we can avoid
potential mistakes you could make.
I recently had a seller who after 6
months of selling on his own called
me to his home. The home needed
paint inside and out. bADLy. Their
reason for not painting was that “the
new buyer’s may want to choose
their own colors”. We spoke about
how this could be holding them back
as buyers look at the house on the
outside and assume it as run down on
the inside as well. my seller painted
and fixed some other cosmetic items
and soon enough we had a buyer and
closing.
Negotiation:
you may negotiate deals at your
current job but are you sure you
know how to negotiate a real estate
deal? There are a ton of moving
parts. What is the buyer’s situation?
Are they looking at a number of other
homes? Just one other home? What
do you know about that home? Is it
more appealing than yours? What if
the buyer presents an offer you want
to counter, or one that is way too low
for you to even consider? Do you
counter that one? What would you
do if the seller wouldn’t fix something
or come down on a too-high price?
by using our experience, knowing
the local real estate market we can
put deals together. Also, by having
your reALTOr® as a buffer you
ensure that emotions out of such an
important financial decision.
We stay Calm:
buying or selling a home can
be very stressful. It is probably the
biggest financial decision you will
make. you have accepted an offer,
booked the mover, met with your
attorney and you’re ready to move
onto your new home. Whoops, your
new buyer is on the phone asking
for $10,000 off for a leaky sink and
$20,000 off because the appraisal
you want to prevent a buyer from
backing out of the deal or you need
help telling a seller about repairs that
need addressed, your reALTOr® will
be there and will know just what to
say without alienating the other side.
Always Available:
We don’t have set office hours. I
am often asked “are you working on
saturday or sunday?” The answer is
a resounding yes! To the chagrin of
our spouses, we answer calls at 10pm,
we meet clients at 8am on sunday,
and we do this because this is what
is needed to help our clients put a
sale in place. We work on your hours
and we are always available. If you
are selling your own home are you
able to show your home to a buyer in
the middle of the day with only a few
hours notice?
False Info:
There are tons of real estate web
sites out there that will tell you in
seconds what the valuation of your
property is. How accurate are these
really?
I have found that most are not
accurate because they do not consider
and aren’t able to consider all factors.
For example, what is the criteria each
site is using? Are they taking into
account the neighborhood? If your
property has 4 acres but only half an
acre is usable is it really much more
valuable than a similar home with a
flat one acre lot? Does the web site
take into consideration the finished
basement or attic? Does it account
for the new granite and stainless
kitchen?
Going back to the doctor analogy
should you go online to self diagnose
your illness and take what that
medical web site says as verbatim?
No. Call your local reALTOr® for
a free market analysis and hear what
he or she has to say about your home
and how we will go about presenting
it and marketing it
by doing it on your own you
are putting yourself out there in a
constantly changing market without
the understanding and reliable source
of information a reALTOr® can
bring. With a top local, experienced
reALTOr® on your side, you can let
go of (most of) the stress and trust
that good things that are about to
come.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Dentists play a key role in
screening patients for many
disorders relative to nutrition
and in providing appropriate
referrals into the health care
system. Although the importance
of integrating diet and nutrition
guidance into dental care has
been advocated for decades
by educators, it continues
to be ignored except by a
handful of prevention-oriented
practitioners.
Many of the world’s most
significant health problems are
linked to poor dietary practices,
including over-nutrition and
under-nutrition. Nutrition plays
a fundamental role in health,
and dental professionals have the
opportunity to be a critical link
between discovery and wellness.
There is a great deal of
evidence linking oral infections,
including periodontal disease,
nutrition and immunological
response. We have clear evidence
linking oral disease with adverse
pregnancy outcomes, diabetes,
cardiovascular disease and
Cross your fingers: We’re
likely to get a 2.2 percent
increase in Social Security
benefits for 2018. With the
average monthly benefit of
$1,360, the increase would
average $29.92 per month.
This is quite a jump,
considering the pitiful
increases of the past few years:
1.7 percent in 2012, 1.5
percent in 2013, 1.7 percent in
2014, 0.0 percent in 2015 and
0.3 percent in 2016. While
2011 was a big 3.6 percent, it
Brighter Smiles...
stroke. In addition, obesity,
which is an epidemic facing our
country, is significantly affecting
the incidence of diabetes,
cardiovascular disease and overall
lifespan. We know there are
direct connections between these
problems and oral disease. What
is the role of the dentist? Should
the dentist just be a tooth fixer?
As the body of data linking
systemic health conditions
and oral infection grows, the
expanding understanding of the
gene-nutrient reaction may result
in more profound discoveries.
As of now, many dentists fail to
fully appreciate that the scientific
bridge between oral disease and
systemic health is often mediated
by diet and nutrition.
The beneficiary of this
profound evidence should be
you, the dental patient. It should
not only be the responsibility
of the physician or specialized
nutritionist to incorporate this
information into practice. The
dentist should be playing a key
role.
For the most part, the dentist
is the only one who examines
the mouth. It used to be that
the dentist only looked at the
teeth and only fixed problems
when they arose. By now, most
dentists screen for periodontal,
or gum, problems as well as oral
cancer. The trend is to address
followed two straight years of
no increase whatsoever.
What shall we do with our
extra $29.92 each month? We
could save our windfall for
two months and buy a pair of
walking shoes. We could pay
for one month of a no-contract
plan for a cellphone. Or, we
could keep our expenses as
they are and stash the extra
away for emergencies.
An important change coming
in 2018: The full retirement
age for those born in 1956 is
going up by two months, for a
new age of 66 years and four
months. If you file for benefits
before then, you’ll end up
collecting reduced payments
for the rest of your life.
If you’re just signing up for
Working Together
Senior Scene
Social Security Benefit Increase?
these problems earlier than ever
before.
People tend to have ingrained
in their head that the dentist just
looks at the teeth and treatment
should be the same as 25 years
ago. The fact of the matter is,
things change. As I have said in
numerous previous columns,
The Town Common
there are no two dentists who
a beautiful smile?
practice identically. Each
individual’s philosophy of care
comes from personal experience,
review of literature and the
type and amount of continuing
education taken. One thing we
all hope is that our health care
provider, dentist or physician,
has our best interest in mind.
There is room for improvement
in the communication between
all health care providers.
As science continues and
evidence grows, preventative care
and treatment will change with
the times. It is the responsibility
of all health care providers to
work towards a more integrated
health care system.
BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT
JOPPA: FEEDING TIME AT THE
TOUCH TANK
NEW PROGRAM! Join Lisa
Hutchings and her animal husbandry
team after hours for a fascinating look
at feeding time for the marine life
in our 110-gallon touch tank. With
the help of Joppa’s digital hand-held
microscope, you’ll see a horseshoe crab
devour sea worms, sea anemones lick
food off their tentacles, and hermit
crabs “beg” for supper. Your view of
the activities will be larger than life
on our video screen. As a special treat,
we’ll show you our developing skate
embryo in its egg case and our tiny
green horseshoe crab eggs - which
should be hatching by the end of
the summer! Wed, Aug 16, 2017
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm. Meet at Joppa
Flats Education Center, One Plum
Island Turnpike, Newburyport. Fee:
adult/$8; child/$8. Preregistration
required. For more information, call
WEDNESDAY EVENING
SHOREBIRDING
Each Wednesday evening in August,
we will introduce participants to the
wonderful diversity of shorebirds that
migrate through the Newburyport/
Plum Island area during the late
summer. The field trips are designed to
provide participants with the tools to
identify Massachusetts shorebirds and
to deliver an in-depth understanding
of the biology and ecology of these
fascinating animals. Participants will
observe various migration schedules
and the relative abundance of these
birds. Each week we will focus on
several species, discussing their
identifying characteristics, behavior,
habitat preferences, and range. Wed,
Aug 16, 2017 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Meet
at Joppa Flats Education Center, One
Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport.
Fee: $12. No preregistration required.
EVENING PROGRAM:
ALGONQUIANS ON THE
PARKER RIVER AND PLUM
ISLAND
Wednesday, August 16th from
7:00 – 8:30 pm - Native Americans
depended on the resource-rich
environment of the Parker River
watershed and Plum Island around
the time of European contact. Their
livelihoods were organized seasonally,
focusing on local plant and animal
subsistence resources and economic
activities for spring, summer, fall, and
winter. The people–Abenaki-speaking
Pawtucket-Pennacook with roots in
New Hampshire–had a permanent
agricultural village at Quascacunquen
(Kwaskwikikwen), near Indian Hill in
West Newbury. How they managed
to thrive is a story of ingenuity,
resilience, and intimate knowledge
of their environment. Local historian
Mary Ellen Lepionka will share her
knowledge of, and enthusiasm for,
this most interesting topic. She is a
publisher, author, editor, textbook
developer, and college instructor with
a Master’s degree in anthropology
from Boston University and postgraduate
work at the University of
British Columbia. Since 2008 she has
researched the findings and available
information in our local area of the
Native American people who lived
here. She is a trustee and member
of the Massachusetts Archaeological
Society. Spaces in the in the refuge’s
85 seat auditorium will be filled on
a first come, first served basis. This
free evening program is sponsored by
the Friends of Parker River National
Wildlife Refuge and the Parker River
NWR, and is another in the Guest
Lecture Series celebrating Parker River
National Wildlife Refuge’s 75th Year!
