I flip a new page on my calendar each
month,
but know the headaches, fatigue, cramps
and the fresh white pad won’t be in my
future.
I wish for my calendar to be accurate
when the blood is supposed to arrive.
Later I wish for those ten fingers,
those ten toes, that healthy heart
pumping blood to a new brain.
Two lungs, a stomach waiting
for its first drop of white milk
from my breast. I wish for a hand
to wrap around my finger.
I wait for my turn—wish for the blood
to show I’m ovulating.
I swallow the Clomid pills, sign my name
at the fertility clinic,
and toss the negative pregnancy test
into the empty wastebasket.
