Southwest to focus on Cuba 

services 

Southwest Airlines announced that 

it will concentrate its future service 

to Cuba in Havana (HAV) and will 

cease operations in both Varadero 

(VRA) and Santa Clara (SNU) at the 

end of day on Monday, Sept. 4, 

2017. Southwest currently serves 

Havana twice daily nonstop from 

Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International 

Airport (FLL) and once daily 

nonstop from Tampa International 

Airport (TPA) and has applied with 

the U.S. Department of Transportation 

for a third daily roundtrip between 

Ft. Lauderdale and Havana. 

“Access to Cuba remains important 

to our South Florida Customers and 

this shift in focus will answer their 

continued calls for our low-fare 

value with bags fly free1 in serving 

the Cuban capital,” said Steve 

Goldberg, Southwest Airlines Senior 

Vice President of Ground Operations 

and lead Executive sponsor 

for Florida. “Our decision to discontinue 

the other Cuba flights comes 

after an in-depth analysis of our 

performance over several months 

which confirmed that there is not a 

clear path to sustainability serving 

these markets, particularly with the 

continuing prohibition in U.S. law 

on tourism to Cuba for American 

citizens.” 

Budapest gets Nordic and 

Swiss surge 

As part of the airline’s plans to base 

two further aircraft at the airport 

next summer, Wizz Air will add two 

routes from its Budapest base for 

S18, namely to Stavanger and Basel. 

Services to the Norwegian city 

will be flown twice-weekly from 15 

March next year, while the Swiss 

city sector will be operated five 

times weekly from 3 May. 

Gatwick revenue rises 

As long haul network grows 

Gatwick Airport in the UK published 

its results for the year ended 31 

March 2017 as the airport smashed 

through the 45 million annual passenger’s 

milestone. Gatwick has 

also just completed the biggest 

year of investment in the airport’s 

history as it continues 

to deliver on its 

ambitious plans for 

growth. 

The airport’s annual 

results are the latest 

demonstration of 

Gatwick’s impressive growth record 

with 44.1 million passengers passing 

through the airport in 2016/17 

- an increase of 3.2 million passengers 

or 7.7%. This growth has been 

matched by record levels of service 

for passengers with customer satisfaction 

and advocacy at an all-time 

high, according to the airport. 

Long-haul continues to be a success 

story with routes growing 13.6% 

and now represent one in five of 

Gatwick’s passengers. As capacity 

issues become a challenge, Gatwick 

will continue to see considerable 

growth in passenger numbers as

AviaAM Leasing, a Warsaw Stock Exchangelisted 

aircraft leasing company, released that its 

joint venture with the Henan Civil Aviation Development 

and Investment Company (HNCA) – 

AviaAM Financial Leasing China – has acquired 

a fourth Airbus A320 family aircraft which was 

delivered to Airbus facilities in Toulouse, France. 

On June 23, the 20 business and 120 economy 

seat-configured aircraft was handed to Aeroflot 

– Russian Airlines. Under the operating lease 

contract, the Russian flag carrier will operate 

the aircraft for the next 12 years. The newly 

built aircraft was delivered as a part of a previously 

signed Memorandum of Understanding 

between AviaAM Financial Leasing China and 

Aeroflot – Russian Airlines, covering the salerecord-breaking 

year and another chapter in the transformation of Gatwick.

Small Planet Airlines to introduce one more A320 in their fleet 

Airstream arranges sale of two DHC-8-106 

aircraft 

Aircraft remarketing specialist Airstream International 

Group has arranged the sale of two 

Bombardier DHC-8-106 aircraft, on behalf of a 

global investor, to 748 Air Services, Kenya. The 

first aircraft, Msn 380, was delivered in January 

with Msn 366 following this June. Both aircraft 

will be based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi and 

operated by 748 predominantly in a charter role.

Lithuanian leisure carrier Small Planet Airlines expanded its fleet by adding one more Airbus 

aircraft in the beginning of this summer. In total, the fleet consists of 22 Airbus 320 and Airbus 

321 aircraft. All of them are already booked for the summer season. During this period, Small 

Planet Airlines plans to carry one million passengers. “The summer season of 2017 is clearly 

the busiest summer ever, and we are planning to carry over one million passengers. All of our 

aircraft came back to Europe after successful projects in Cambodia, India and Saudi Arabia. 

They are already flying to the most popular summer holiday destinations. This year we are 

aiming to grow in Germany, therefore our newest Airbus 320 is based in Paderborn, and will 

carry our German passengers to the Mediterranean Sea resorts”, reports Kristijonas Kaikaris,

Jetstar Pacific takes delivery of first aircraft ordered directly from Airbus 

and-leaseback of a total of eight ex-factory Airbus 

A320/A321 aircraft. The legal assistance for 

the lease was provided by DLA Piper. 

Asiana Airlines selects Honeywell’s 131-9A 

Auxiliary Power Units for multiple aircraft 

Honeywell has been selected by Asiana Airlines 

to supply the required power to start an aircraft’s 

main engines, and run air conditioning while the 

plane is on the ground for a more comfortable 

passenger onboarding experience. With Honeywell’s 

auxiliary power units, Asiana Airlines 

can also improve operational performance and 

lower maintenance costs over the life cycle of its 

fleet to achieve significant fuel savings year over 

year. Honeywell will provide Asiana Airlines with 

a global network of maintenance services from 

its local customer support team based in South 

Korea, together with an established APU maintenance 

facility in Singapore that has a strong, 

longstanding relationship with Asiana Airlines. In 

March 2017, Airbus designated the Honeywell 

131-9A APU as standard equipment for its A320 

family of aircraft. Honeywell’s APU is now recognized 

as the gold standard for the A320 family.

Vietnam’s Jetstar Pacific Airlines has taken delivery of the first of ten A320ceo aircraft ordered 

directly from Airbus. The aircraft was handed over to the airline in Toulouse on June 26, and 

will join an existing fleet of 12 leased A320s flying with the airline. Jetstar Pacific, based at Ho 

Chi Minh City, is a joint venture between Vietnam Airlines (70%) and the Qantas Group (30%). 

It currently operates a total of 36 domestic and international routes. It is part of the larger Jetstar 

Group that connects more than 80 destinations in 17 countries. Other carriers in the Jetstar 

Group are Jetstar Airways (Australia), Jetstar Japan (Japan), and Jetstar Asia (Singapore). 

Airbus Helicopters offers H145 with Alternate Gross Weight of 3,800 kg 

Airbus delivers helicopters to Iraq Ministry 

of Oil 

In May Airbus delivered the final two of four 

H145 helicopters ordered by the Iraq Ministry 

of Oil. The contract with the South Oil Company, 

a government-owned company of the Iraqi 

Ministry of Oil, was signed in June 2014. The 

Iraqi Ministry of Oil has selected Airbus as its 

helicopter provider for its aviation department. 

The aircraft will be mainly operated from Baghdad 

and in the province of Basrah, supporting a 

variety of missions including surveillance, EMS 

and passenger transport. 

Avolon delivers one Boeing B737 MAX 8 

to Malindo Air 

Avolon, the international aircraft leasing company, 

has delivered one Boeing B737 MAX 8 aircraft 

to Malindo Air. This is the fifth Avolon aircraft on 

lease to Malindo Air. 

BOC Aviation delivers one Airbus A330-300 

to EVA Air 

BOC Aviation has delivered a single Airbus A330- 

300 aircraft to EVA Air. This aircraft is from the 

Company’s existing order book. 

Airbus Helicopters offers H145 with Alternate Gross Weight of 3,800 kg

The optional increase of the Alternate Gross Weight (AGW) allows H145 operators to take 

off with up to 100 kg more useful load. It brings additional benefits, especially for law enforcement, 

para-public or military missions, offering the potential to carry more fuel, mission 

equipment or passengers, for example. Axel Humpert, Airbus Helicopters Head of the H145 

Programme says: “Since the entry-in-service of the new H145 in 2014 Airbus Helicopters has 

continued its efforts to improve the power and performance of the aircraft according to our 

customers’ needs. The new Alternate Gross Weight of 3,800 kg is a significant increase for a 

light-twin helicopter and offers real added value for H145 operators.”

BOC Aviation orders four new Boeing 787-9 

aircraft 

BOC Aviation has ordered four new Boeing 787-9 

Dreamliners. This is the Company’s first order for 

Boeing 787-9 aircraft. All four aircraft have been 

placed on long-term leases with Air Europa, and 

are scheduled to be delivered to the airline in 

2019. The aircraft will be powered by the Rolls- 

Royce Trent 1000 Engine.

Safran and Maini Precision Products 

sign supply contract for LEAP engine 

guide vanes 

Safran Aircraft Engines has taken a significant 

step forward in its commitment to the Indian 

government’s “Make-in-India” initiative by 

choosing Maini Precision Products (MPP) to 

manufacture the low-pressure turbine (LPT) 

guide vanes for LEAP engines. Safran Aircraft 

Engines signed a contract with Bengalurubased 

MPP at the Paris Air Show. These sophisticated 

guide vanes will be manufactured 

at a new MPP plant now under construction 

in the Bommasandra Industrial Area in Bengaluru, 

Southern India. This contract represents 

a significant rise up the technology 

value chain for the Indian aerospace industry, 

and will also pave the way for Safran and 

Maini to examine other opportunities for the 

manufacture of critical aero-engine parts 

in India. At the same time, this project significantly 

expands Safran’s presence in India. 

Maini’s relationship with Safran Aircraft Engines 

started 12 years ago with the supply of 

parts for the best-selling CFM56 commercial 

engine. Since 2015, MPP has also become a 

supplier on Safran’s LEAP engine, successor 

to the CFM56, and the Silvercrest business jet 

engine. With this contract Maini expands its 

contribution to the new LEAP engine, which 

has gotten off to a very successful start, with 

more than 14 000 orders. 

Spirit AeroSystems expanding manufacturing 

facilities in Malaysia 

Spirit AeroSystems has announced plans to 

expand its manufacturing operations in Subang, 

Malaysia, to accommodate increasing 

volumes of assembly work on aerostructure 

components for commercial airliners. The 

company is in the architectural and engineering 

planning stages to add a 50,000 ft² manufacturing 

facility adjacent to other buildings 

on its campus in the Malaysia International 

Aerospace Centre near Kuala Lumpur. Construction 

is set to begin in October with a target 

for operations to begin in mid-2018. Spirit 

expects to eventually add about 300 workers 

to the current site population of 700. Spirit 

employs about 15,000 people worldwide designing 

and building complex aerostructures 

for the world’s most recognizable airplanes. 

Jet East Aviation receives Dassault approval 

for Non-Destructive Testing on 

Falcon aircraft 

Jet East Aviation has secured approval from 

Dassault for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) 

at its on-site facility and mobile unit based in 

Trenton, NJ on all Falcon aircraft. Jet East Aviation 

developed extensive NDT capabilities in 

2016 as part of their maintenance portfolio. 

Jet East offers in-house NDT services as well 

a mobile NDT unit that conducts on-site testing. 

With the approval from Dassault Falcon, 

Jet East is authorized to provide full-service 

NDT testing including Dye Penetrate, Magnetic 

Particle, Eddy Current and Ultrasound and 

Radiographic testing. In addition to receiving 

approval on Dassault Falcon, Jet East Aviation 

had previously obtained NDT approval for 

Cessna Citation and Gulfstream aircraft. 

AAR signs component support agreement 

with Wataniya Airways 

AAR has reported the latest expansion of 

its commercial business in the Middle East: 

a multiyear contract to provide power-bythe-hour 

component support for Wataniya 

Airways, one of the national carriers for the 

state of Kuwait. AAR will support Wataniya’s 

fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft through its extensive 

inventory network, including parts 

warehouses in Dubai and Europe, and position 

local stock in Kuwait. Based in Kuwait, 

Wataniya Airways will operate flights from 

Kuwait throughout the Middle East, Asia, 

North Africa and Europe. 

LORD adds Fly-by-Wire products to U.S. 

repair capabilities in support of Airbus 

LORD Corporation has added Fly-by-Wire 

(FbW) aftermarket repair capabilities at its 

Cambridge Springs, Pa. facility, in an effort to 

expand aftermarket support for long-time client 

Airbus. LORD has supported Airbus since 

1984 out of their repair center in Saint-Vallier, 

France. The addition of this new repair station 

will ensure faster service, reducing an average 

return from 40 to approximately 15 days. The 

repair station, ready to operate, is equipped 

to handle cockpit equipment used on the Airbus

OEMServices extends partnership with Singapore Airlines by supporting its fleet 

of A350-900 aircraft 

Sunwing signs GE TrueChoice agreement 

for CFM56-7B engines 

Sunwing Airlines has signed an eight-year TrueChoice 

Overhaul agreement with GE Aviation 

for the maintenance, repair and overhaul 

of its CFM56-7B engines that power its nineteen 

Boeing 737-8 aircraft. The agreement is 

valued at more than US$60m over the life of 

the contract. 

FL Technics Indonesia signs first base 

maintenance deal with Tri-M.G. 

Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Indonesia 

has recently granted FL Technics Indonesian 

branch, a global provider of integrated 

aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services, 

with base maintenance approval AMO- 

145. Immediately after the approval, FL Technics 

Indonesia signed a C-check agreement for 

Tri-M.G.’s Boeing 737 CL. The AMO-145 base 

maintenance approval allows FL Technics to 

provide a full base maintenance service package 

for all Indonesia-registered clients owning 

Boeing-type aircraft.. 

Singapore becomes largest repair activities 

hub for Thales worldwide 

Thales’ newly expanded facility in Changi consolidates 

all avionics production and Maintenance, 

Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities 

under one roof for better synergies and process 

optimization. Thales has also invested in 

equipment and human capital, as it builds for 

future growth. Thales started its commercial 

avionics operations in Singapore over forty 

years ago and now produces key systems for 

the Airbus A320, A350 and Boeing 787 fleets. 

Singapore houses one of three avionics repair 

sites for the Group, with the other two located 

in Chatellerault, France and Piscataway, 

Singapore Airlines and OEMServices Teams 

As a leading provider of integrated OEM component solutions to airlines, OEMServices, 

combing strengths of over 40 OEMs through its Original Integrated Services (OIS) offering, 

has started providing a global integrated component solution to Singapore Airlines. This 

contract includes repair services, pool access, and 24/7 component support from OEMServices’ 

main A350 regional pool based at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

USA. In the past year, Thales in Singapore has 

grown its repair volume by over 30%. In addition 

to providing repair operations, Thales 

is also providing a Customer Support Centre 

(CSC) for Diehl Aerospace’s Singaporean subsidiary, 

set up in November last year to better 

serve its regional customers. The CSC has 

been operational since January 1, 2017 at the 

expanded Thales facility in Changi North Rise. 

The widened scope of the extended partnership 

increases Thales’ repair volume in Singapore 

to an estimated 40,000 pieces of equipment 

per year, making Singapore the Group’s 

largest centre for avionics maintenance and 

repair services worldwide. 

The aerospace industry in Singapore has seen 

robust growth over the last two decades, and 

Singapore is home to one of the most advanced 

MRO clusters in the world. Singapore 

accounts for a quarter of the region’s MRO 

output and Thales has worked closely with 

the Singapore Economic Development Board 

in bringing the project to fruition. 

Vector Aerospace achieves CAA Part M 

approval 

Vector Aerospace Corporation, a global independent 

provider of aviation maintenance, 

repair and overhaul (MRO) services, has reported 

that its Fleetlands facility in Gosport, 

United Kingdom, has achieved Civil Aviation 

Authority (CAA) Part M approval. As such, 

Vector’s UK team is now a Continued Airworthiness 

Management Organisation, capable

with CAMO services. Vector’s Fleetlands 

facility is an Airbus Helicopter Maintenance 

Center for the AS332 and H225 family, and a 

Sikorsky Customer Support Center (CSC) for 

the S-76. Vector Fleetlands has extensive aircraft 

MRO capabilities, including major structural 

and composite repairs, and the facility 

also offers world-class completions, modifications 

and paint services. Vector’s UK team 

also provides engine MRO services, including 

mobile repair team (MRT) support, and customers 

are additionally able to benefit from 

the convenience of Vector’s dedicated component 

services capabilities. 

Embraer appoints SIA Engineering as 

E-Jets Authorized Service Center in the 

Philippines 

Embraer has appointed SIA Engineering (Philippines) 

Corporation (SIAEP), a subsidiary of 

SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC), as 

an E-Jets authorized service center. Embraer’s 

E-Jets family of commercial jets consists of 

the E170, E175, E190 and E195 aircraft. “The 

appointment of SIAEP as an authorized E-Jets 

service center in the region is a result of our 

commitment to enhance our services and 

support solutions to E-Jets operators in Asia 

Pacific,” said Mr. Johann Bordais, President & 

CEO, Embraer Services & Support. “SIAEP has 

demonstrated their capability and expertise 

in aircraft maintenance. Given their experience, 

we believe that E-Jets operators will see 

value in their proposition.” 

STTS appoints Aircraft Support Industries 

to take on building works of wide-body 

painting hangar 

In order to respond to the growing needs of 

the aerospace industry in terms of painting 

facilities, and to offer customers in the Middle 

East greater proximity, STTS has appointed 

Aircraft Support Industries (ASI) to take on 

the building works of its wide-body painting 

hangar at the new Al Maktoum International 

airport. Delivery is finally expected early 

2019. The state-of-the-art facility will mainly 

target MRO painting needs for all types of 

commercial wide-bodies (A380, B777, A350, 

B787 etc.). The facility will provide approximately 

6,000 m² of hangar space and 1600 m² 

of offices and workshops. This will be STTS’s 

first hangar in the region. The masterplan 

for the development includes for the future 

provision of a narrow-bodied painting hangar 

adjacent to the A380 capable hangar on the 

same land plot. 

FINANCIAL NEWS 

HEICO acquires innovative composites 

manufacturer 

HEICO Corporation has announced that its Flight 

Support Group has acquired 100% of Carbon by 

Design, a growing manufacturer of composite 

components for UAVs, rockets, spacecraft and 

other specialized applications. The purchase 

price and financial details were not disclosed. 

HEICO stated that it expects the acquisition to 

be accretive to its earnings within the first year 

following the acquisition. Carbon by Design is 

led by Dominick Consalvi, who co-founded the 

company in 2003. The company engineers and 

manufactures hard-to-design and produce complex 

carbon composites for commercial launch 

vehicles and spacecraft, as well as multiple UAV 

manufacturers. Mr. Consalvi will continue to 

head Carbon by Design, which will join HEICO’s 

Specialty Products Group, a leader in composites 

for commercial aviation and defense applications. 

Carbon by Design’s 75 team members 

and the entire management team is expected to 

remain with the company in their existing roles. 

HEICO stated that it does not expect any employee 

turnover to result from the acquisition. 

Kellstrom Aerospace Group acquires 

Vortex Aviation 

Kellstrom Aerospace Group has reported the 

acquisition of Vortex Aviation, a specialist in 

worldwide AOG on-wing engine maintenance 

services and quick-turn engine repairs across 

all major commercial aircraft engine platforms. 

With repair facilities located in Fort 

Lauderdale, Florida; Shannon, Ireland, and 

Singapore, Vortex Aviation provides global 

support and turnkey solutions for many of the 

world’s aircraft lessors and airlines. The acquisition 

strengthens Kellstrom Aerospace Group 

as the global leader in aircraft lifecycle solutions 

and builds upon the Company’s diverse 

services aimed at reducing aircraft operational 

costs and maximizing residual values. “The addition 

of Vortex Aviation, in collaboration with 

Kellstrom Aerospace and The Aircraft Group 

(TAG), will provide great value to our customers 

and the commercial aerospace industry,” 

said Jeff Lund, CEO, Kellstrom Aerospace 

Group. “With Vortex Aviation joining Kellstrom 

Aerospace Group, our range of technical services 

is greatly enhanced. Whether servicing 

on-wing support, minor in-house repairs, 

managing engines through full performance 

restoration, or technical consultancy projects, 

we can provide unbiased cost-saving solutions 

across all major engine platforms.” 

SmartLynx Airlines turnover increased by 

18% in 2016 

SmartLynx Airlines, the third-largest passenger 

carrier in Latvia, reported that net turnover in 

2016 increased by 18% to €108.4m. Aircraft wet 

lease services represented 53.3% of the company’s 

business portfolio, with charter flights 

taking up another 45.5%. The aircraft wet lease 

(ACMI) services net turnover made up €57.7m 

in 2016, or 15.3% more than in 2015, while 

charter flights turnover amounted to €49.4m, 

or 21.9% more than the previous year. Other 

segments of the portfolio – 1.2% or €1.3m – 

consists of SmartLynx ATO, which is the leading 

pilot training centre in the Baltic States and offers 

type rating courses for Airbus A320 series.

the planned doubling of engine production 

and to deliver on its record civil aerospace 

order book. The investment, which will be 

made over the next few years, is part of Rolls- 

Royce’s ongoing industrial transformation and 

will provide additional capacity as it develops 

and tests the next generation of aero engines. 

The majority of the investment, which is inline 

with the group’s ongoing planned expenditure, 

will provide a new facility for the 

testing of large civil aero engines in Derby, the 

home of Rolls-Royce’s civil aerospace division. 

The new testbed will be capable of testing a 

range of engines including the Trent XWB, 

which powers the Airbus A350 XWB. There 

will also be investment in Rolls-Royce’s large 

engine Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) 

facility in Derby, as well as in its manufacturing 

facilities in Derby and Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. 

Rolls-Royce has also committed 

to retaining the Precision Machining Facility 

(PMF) in Derby, which the company previously 

announced would be closed. A constructive 

dialog with its senior union representatives in 

the UK has underpinned the decision to invest 

in Derby, helping to sustain more than 7,000 

Rolls-Royce jobs across the East Midlands and 

facilitating the ramp-up in engine production.

Delta Air Lines and Korean Air sign agreement to create trans-Pacific joint venture

Delta Air Lines and Korean Air have reached an agreement to create a leading trans-Pacific 

joint venture in both scope and service, offering an enhanced and expanded network, 

industry-leading products and service, and a seamless customer experience between the 

U.S. and Asia. The agreement, signed on June 23, deepens their historic partnership, which 

spans nearly two decades. The joint venture will create a combined network serving more 

than 290 destinations in the Americas and more than 80 in Asia, providing customers of both 

airlines with more travel choices than ever before. The joint venture will augment the two 

airlines’ capabilities in the trans-Pacific market and provide the necessary scale and scope 

to compete in this market. 

IAI invests in two cyber companies in Holland 

and Hungary 

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is investing 

millions of dollars in two cyber companies in 

Holland and Hungary, IAI has announced at 

the Cyber Week conference held in Tel-Aviv, 

Israel. The investments, which are carried out 

through the IAI’s Cyber Division, are meant to 

expand IAI’s cyber R&D and its global footprint 

in this field. 

In Holland, IAI is investing in Inpedio BV, a provider 

of cutting-edge cyber security solutions 

to governments and enterprises. Inpedio BV 

offers ‘Zerox’, which detects and stops exploitation 

attempts without a set of signatures, 

thus addressing the unknown and known vulnerabilities 

simultaneously. Using Zerox’ antiransomware 

detection and prevention module 

provides a novel solution for this emerging 

threat. Inpedio’s ‘Mercury’ product works 

with a multilayer approach to protect cellular 

iOS and Android devices from sophisticated 

attacks by integrating the protection layers of 

the devices with those of network and communications 

layers. 

In Hungary, IAI is investing in Cytrox, which 

provides governments with operational cyber 

solution for design, management and implementation 

of cyber intelligence as well as 

innovative engines for gathering intelligence 

from end devices and cloud services. 

The new investments add to IAI’s existing 

cyber operations in Israel, Switzerland and 

Singapore. Secura Group from Singapore has 

recently invested US$4.5m in Custodio Technologies 

IAI’s R&D center in Singapore in exchange 

for 20% of its shares. 

Military and Defence 

Airbus Helicopters delivers final H145M 

to the German Air Force 

Airbus Helicopters has delivered the 15th 

and final H145M multi-role helicopter to the 

German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). The 

helicopters, stationed in Laupheim, are operated 

by the Bundeswehr special forces. As the 

launch customer, the Bundeswehr ordered 15 

of these high-performance helicopters in 2013 

as part of the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) 

Special Operations Forces (SOF) project and 

received the first aircraft at the end of 2015. 

With this final delivery, Airbus Helicopters has 

completed the entire programme within the 

specified time schedule and budget.

Norwegian has announced a new route from 

London Gatwick to Buenos Aires, marking the 

airline’s first ever South American route as its 

UK expansion plans gather pace. From February 

14, 2018 Norwegian will start a year-round 

service of four weekly flights from London 

Gatwick to Buenos Aires Ezeiza International 

Airport, all on board brand new Boeing 787 

Dreamliner aircraft. Norwegian already offers 

long-haul flights from London Gatwick to nine 

US cities and Singapore. Buenos Aires will become 

Norwegian’s 11 th long-haul route from 

London Gatwick as part of continued expansion 

from the UK into a range of new global 

markets. 

Transport Canada, the U.S. Federal Aviation 

Authority, the European Aviation Safety 

Agency and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure 

and Transport of the Republic of Korea 

(South Korea) have qualified the world’s first 

C Series aircraft full-flight simulator (FFS) to 

Level D, the highest qualification for flight 

simulators. The Bombardier C Series FFS, located 

at the Bombardier Training Centre in 

Montréal, is the first C Series FFS to receive 

Level D qualification. 

Concept Laser (a GE Additive company) and 

LAUAK (a French aeronautical company) have 

signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to launch an alliance 

between the two entities. Lauak will 

invest in Concept Laser’s additive machines 

to be a reference customer for Concept Laser 

technology and Concept Laser will work 

closely with Lauak to implement additive 

processes and design new products. Concept 

Laser will support Lauak during the implementation 

phase of the equipment into 

their manufacturing process. Lauak will also 

present the Concept Laser machine to reference 

customers in their showroom, including 

the presentation of test objects for demonstration 

purposes. Concept Laser and Lauak 

will collaborate to redesign components from 

the Lauak portfolio. “Lauak sees the potential 

of additive manufacturing and I’m delighted 

they’ve chosen Concept Laser equipment to 

help them on their journey,” said CEO of Concept 

Laser, Frank Herzog. “We will support 

them with equipment, processes and people 

to allow them to fulfil their objectives.” 

Jeppesen, a Boeing company, now offers operators 

dynamic new features and functionality 

within its industry-leading FliteDeck Pro 

electronic flight bag (EFB) solution. Available 

for airlines and large-scale operators, the 

new version of FliteDeck Pro now provides 

enhanced navigation and situational awareness 

capabilities to simplify preparation and 

in-flight procedures. The latest enhancements 

to FliteDeck Pro include the addition of Smart 

Notes, which analyze chronological and geospatial 

flight data to automatically present 

key data points for pilots, without the need 

for manual interaction. New Tailored Enroute 

capabilities allow operators to depict Jeppesen’s 

data-driven en-route data, supplemented 

with their own operationally-specific information, 

to provide a complete en-route navigation 

picture. “The introduction of Jeppesen 

FliteDeck Pro 3.0/9.0 continues the digital 

transformation of flight operations, as we add 

exiting new features to further integrate intelligent 

information with our EFB platforms,” 

said Tim Huegel, director, Jeppesen Flight 

Deck Solutions. “The addition of Smart Notes, 

Tailored Enroute and Airport Moving Map 

capabilities now offer flight crews with the 

most accurate information in the industry, to 

increase situational awareness and efficiency 

in today’s complex airspace environment, all 

backed by our renowned 24/7 global customer 

support.” 

Airways New Zealand will continue to deliver 

air traffic control services to Niue, Samoa, the 

Cook Islands, and the Kingdom of Tonga after 

the contract was re-signed in Christchurch on 

June 29. Transport Minister Simon Bridges 

said that: “The Pacific Upper Airspace agreement 

we have with these four countries is a 

significant part of Airways New Zealand’s involvement 

with the Pacific region, Airways 

also provides all New Zealand’s air navigation 

services.” This agreement complements 

the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 

and Trade (MFAT) in the Pacific region, and 

in particular the recent Pacific Aeronautical 

Charting and Procedures (PACP) program. The 

program is implementing satellite-based approach 

procedures at 38 aerodromes across 

the Pacific to improve the ability of aircraft to 

land safely, especially in poor weather. 

Inbound international flights are to undergo 

increased security based on new plans announced 

by the U.S. Department of Homeland 

Security (DHS), including enhanced screening 

of personal electronic devices (PADs) through 

more-thorough passenger checking. 

The new regulations will be applicable to all 

commercial flights into the U.S., which involves 

approximately 325,000 passengers 

travelling daily on 180 airlines that are affected. 

Roughly 2,100 flights from approximately 

280 airports in 105 countries will have to apply 

the new rules on a daily basis. 

According to DHS Secretary, John Kelly, “We 

cannot play international whack-a-mole with 

each new threat. Instead, we must put in 

place new measures across the board to keep 

the travelling public safe and make it harder 

for terrorists to succeed.” 

Kelly has said that the changes will “raise the 

global baseline of aviation security,” which 

will involve enhanced passenger screening, 

improved screening of personal electronic devices, 

and improved security around passenger 

areas and aircraft. 

The number of locations across the globe 

used for pre-clearance will also be increased. 

In a statement from the DHS: “stakeholders 

who fail to adopt these requirements within 

certain timeframes run the risk of additional 

security restrictions being imposed.” 

When talking about the ban on PDAs larger 

than a smartphone being allowed on board 

flights to the U.S. from ten Middle East and 

North African countries, introduced in March, 

Kelly indicated that the decision had been 

based on “evaluated intelligence and real concerns 

we had about terrorist plotting,” adding 

that the country’s enemies “are constantly 

working to find new methods for disguising 

explosives, recruiting insiders, and hijacking 

aircraft.” 

DHS also said the ban affecting direct flights 

from those ten countries would be removed 

if they each complied with the increased security 

measures provided in the TSA directive. 

American Airlines has announced from its 

headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas that it is 

entering into a joint venture with Analogic 

Corporation to expand the use of Computed 

Tomography (CT) at airports across the globe. 

It is anticipated that the state-of-the-art CT 

technology when it successfully completes 

the Transportation Security Administration 

(TSA) certification and qualification process 

will present airport security officials with an 

improved form of detection. 

The technology will enable the use of scanning 

equipment which works in 3-D and which 

will have a better chance of detecting threats 

contained in such items as PEDs, while increasing 

passenger throughput through the 

use of an upgradable CT platform. 

Part of the partnership involves American Airlines 

purchasing multiple units of the Analogic 

ConneCT aviation checkpoint security screening 

system, also making it the launch customer 

for this breakthrough in checkpoint security 

which has features including an open network 

architecture, industry-leading 3-D imaging 

technology, and automated threat detection. 

The ConneCT screening system is currently 

undergoing certification testing with the TSA 

and will be installed at a checkpoint lane as 

part of a TSA Innovation Task Force initiative, 

when completed.

The Indian government has announced that 

within the next four to five years a second international 

airport is to be built near the capital 

city, New Delhi, at an estimated cost of 200 

billion rupees (US$3.10bn). To cope with the 

rapidly increasing volume of passenger traffic, 

the Noida International Airport will be built 

from scratch in phases that will enable it to 

cater with up to 50 million passengers per annum 

(MPPA). 

It is anticipated that New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi 

International Airport will reach 91 MPPA 

within the next three years, and attain a peak 

MPPA of 109 in 2023, which underlines the 

need for the new airport near India’s capital. 

According to Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi 

Raju, “We have granted in-principle 

approval for a greenfield airport at Jewar 

(Greater Noida) to cater to the growing flying 

requirements of NCR,” – NCR, or the National 

Capital Region, encompasses Delhi and several 

surrounding districts of Uttar Pradesh, 

Haryana and Rajasthan states. 

The new airport in Greater Noida will be located 

72 km (45 miles) from New Delhi’s Indira 

Gandhi International Airport. Initially 

the airport, which will occupy a site of 3,000 

hectares (7,400 acres), will have one runway, 

adding three more in subsequent phases.

ACS platform, Watson will have the primary 

responsibility of executing on the future 

growth strategies of the company’s global 

asset trading and engine leasing businesses 

which focus on narrow and wide-body 

commercial aircraft and engines. He will 

also provide key strategic leadership within 

ACS’ senior executive team. 

• Scott Fancher, senior vice-president of 

program management, integration and 

development programs, has announced 

his intention to retire in September 2017, 

culminating a 40-year Boeing career that 

spans executive leadership roles across the 

company’s signature commercial, defense 

and space programs. In his current role, 

Fancher led the company-wide deployment 

of Boeing’s development program 

management system, and he structured 

and launched the company’s first integrated 

corporate function for identifying, 

developing and deploying program management 

talent.
