easyJet Europe takes off
First Austrian-registered aircraft now flying
Low cost carrier easyJet has confirmed
that it has been awarded
an Air Operator Certificate (AOC)
by Austro Control and an airline
operating licence by Austria’s Federal
Ministry for Transport, Innovation
and Technology (bmvit) which
means that easyJet Europe is now
operational.
On July 14
2017 easyJet
said that it
hoped to receive
an Austrian
AOC “in
the near future”
for a new subsidiary – easyJet
Europe – to ensure intra-EU traffic
rights post Brexit. Around half of
easyJet’s passengers come from
the EU27 (the 27 countries of the
EU once the UK leaves) and around
30% fly on intra-EU27 routes.
As the most exposed UK airline to
a single European aviation market
(ex UK), easyJet is right not to sit
around waiting for regulatory clarity.
Other airlines are also showing
some signs of unease about the
continued uncertainty. As CAPA reports,
IAG has questioned the EU’s
ownership and control rules and
Ryanair has mused over how to
maintain EU majority control if UK
shareholders are excluded from the
definition. Wizz Air is even looking
at a UK licence.
easyJet will phase the re-registering
easyJet will
110 planes that are required for its
EU based operations into easyJet
Europe over the next two winters.
This process will be completed in
advance of the UK leaving the EU.
easyJet Europe’s principal place of
business will be in Vienna and the
management
of easyJet Eu-
“This will ensure easyJet can continue to operate
flights both across Europe and domestically within
European countries after the UK has left the EU.”
Carolyn McCall, easyJet CEO
rope will have
full operational
control
and financial
oversight of
the company.
Carolyn McCall, easyJet CEO said: “This announcement is the result
of an extensive and thorough regulatory process in Austria and I am
pleased to confirm that easyJet Europe is now flying with its first flight
touching down in its new headquarters of Vienna.
“easyJet Europe has a strong management team in place, led by Thomas
Haagensen, who will oversee the transfer of the planes and people
to the airline. This will ensure easyJet can continue to operate flights
both across Europe and domestically within European countries after
the UK has left the EU.
“In addition, like all other European airlines, we continue to lobby for
an EU UK aviation agreement which, as a minimum, will enable flights
between the EU and the UK.”
Aeroflot expands Sukhoi Superjet 100
fleet to 50 with new order for 20 jets
The opening day of the MAKS-2017 International
Air Show, July 18, saw the signing of a contract between
PJSC Aeroflot, VEB Leasing and JSC United
Aircraft Corporation, for delivery of 20 Sukhoi
Superjet 100s to PJSC Aeroflot, the Russian flagcarrying
airline. The contract is a follow-up to
the Memorandum of Understanding signed by
Aeroflot and Sukhoi Civil Aircraft in January 2015,
while the first firm contract for the delivery of 30
SSJ100s was completed in 2016. With the addition
of these 20 jets, Aeroflot’s fleet of SSJ100s
will rise to 50, as the airline continues to operate
one of the youngest fleets among the 20 largest
global airlines by available seat kilometers.
The ordered jets have a two-class configuration:
12 seats in the business class compartment and
75 seats in economy class, as per the currently
configured jets. The new planes will be used on
domestic flights throughout Russia, on routes to
CIS countries, as well as to a number of European
destinations. The first aircraft from this new order
is scheduled for delivery this summer and the full
order is expected to be completed by July 2018.
Bombardier Business Aircraft has released that its Global 7000 aircraft flight test program is
progressing as planned and has surpassed the 500-hour milestone. With three flight test vehicles
(FTVs) in flight testing and two remaining FTVs to join shortly, the Global 7000 aircraft program
is on track to meet the aircraft’s targeted entry-into-service in the second half of 2018.
Bombardier also confirmed that the first several customer aircraft are progressing smoothly
through production, with four Global 7000 business jets currently in final assembly at the Bombardier
facility in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In November 2016, Bombardier began flight testing
its state-of-the-art Global 7000 business jet with the maiden flight of first flight test vehicle
1 (FTV1). FTV1 came close to surpassing the speed of sound, reaching M 0.995 during a test
flight in March 2017 – the largest business jet to operate so close to the sound barrier. The second
flight test vehicle (FTV2) and third flight test vehicle (FTV3) joined the program in March
and May 2017, respectively. The comprehensive testing conducted using the three FTVs over
the course of the 500 flight hours has demonstrated the capability of the aircraft’s propulsion,
avionics, electrical and mechanical systems. This testing will account for the majority of the
certification requirements. Two remaining flight test vehicles, FTV4 and FTV5, are currently in
final assembly and Flight Validation Testing in a dedicated pre-flight bay and are on track to join
the other aircraft at Bombardier’s world-class flight test centre in Wichita, Kansas.
Singapore Technologies Aerospace secures
new contracts worth S$650m in 2Q2017
Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace)
secured new contracts worth about S$650m in the
second quarter of 2017 for services ranging from
heavy airframe and engine maintenance, component
repair and overhaul to freighter conversion.
The heavy airframe maintenance contracts include
a long-term agreement, announced in
June, that ST Aerospace’s US affiliate company, VT
San Antonio Aerospace (VT SAA), secured from
Air Canada to service the airline’s flagship 787
Dreamliner fleet. With the first 787 successfully
redelivered after it underwent C1-checks at VT
SAA’s facility in San Antonio, US, in May, ST Aerospace
became the first MRO service provider in
the Americas to perform heavy maintenance on
the 787.
Among the other heavy maintenance contracts
secured during the quarter were agreements to
service CFM56-5B and CFM56-7B engines for a
European and Middle Eastern Airline respectively,
as well as agreements to service the 747 and 767
aircraft for American Airlines. Other long-term
contracts won during the quarter included an
agreement for a labor Charge-Per-Aircraft-Landing
program to service the wheels and brakes of
a low-cost carrier’s Airbus A320 fleet.
ST Aerospace gained momentum in its A330-
300 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion
programme during the quarter when its joint
venture with Airbus, Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW),
secured additional four firm and ten optional
A330-300P2F conversions from DHL Express. This
procedures were successfully completed. The Legacy 500 is the fourth business jet model to be
assembled at the company’s Melbourne facility, where the Legacy 450 is also produced, alongside
the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300. The Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 are also manufactured
at Embraer’s production facilities in São José dos Campos, Brazil.
Embraer began its Melbourne aircraft assembly operations in early 2011 with the entry-level
Phenom 100, followed by the Phenom 300 in August 2012, the Legacy 450 in June 2016, and
the Legacy 500 in January 2017. Over the last seven years, the company has delivered close
to 250 Phenom and Legacy jets, valued at about US$ 2 billion, from its Melbourne facility to
customers across the U.S. and to countries as close as Mexico, Canada, China and Australia.
New ownership for Switzerland’s Darwin
Airline
Darwin Airline SA, the Swiss airline that operates
under the name “Etihad Regional” in various
European countries, has announced a change in
ownership. The existing shareholders, including
Darwin’s strategic partner Etihad, have agreed
to sell their shares to a new Swiss subsidiary of
Adria Airways. The Slovenian carrier is the leading
regional airline in Southeastern Europe and
a member of Star Alliance. Under the terms of
the new agreement between Darwin’s current
shareholders and 4K Invest of Luxembourg, the
owners of Adria Airways, the airline will continue
to operate under its current legal name Darwin
Airline SA with its own air operator’s certificate
(AOC), but will change its marketing brand from
Etihad Regional to Adria Airways Switzerland.
Lugano in Southern Switzerland will remain the
company’s headquarters, with Geneva as its second
base. Adria Airways will take over some of
Darwin’s administrative and operational tasks
and will market the Swiss airline’s services. CEO
Maurizio Merlo has decided to step down and
take on a new challenge. He is replaced by Heinrich
Ollendiek, who until now acted as Adria Airways’
Chief Financial Officer.
Delta lease agreement approved for final
component of new LaGuardia airport
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s
Board of Commissioners gave final approval to a
lease agreement with Delta Air Lines for its new
US$4bn, 37-gate facility at LaGuardia Airport,
the final component of the transformation of
LaGuardia into a completely rebuilt, unified 21st
century airport. The Port Authority has committed
a fixed amount of no more than US$600m
to the Delta project, with the airline providing
US$3.4bn and assuming responsibility for any
cost overruns. All of the new airport terminal facilities,
including the Delta project, will be located
closer to the Grand Central Parkway as part of
the new unified airport design, providing significantly
more airfield space. The Delta work will
begin later this summer. The redevelopment of
the Delta facilities is part of the overall LaGuardia
Airport project that broke ground in June
of 2016 on the construction of the new overall
roadway configuration and on the LaGuardia
Gateway Partners passenger terminal concourses
on the western half of the new airport.
Lufthansa reports adjusted EBIT of
€1,042m in the first half of 2017
Based on preliminary figures, Deutsche Lufthansa
AG generated revenues of €17.0bn in the
first half of 2017 (Q1 & Q2 2016 €15.0bn). The
Adjusted EBIT came to €1,042m (2016 period:
€529m). The passenger airlines achieved a cumulative
Adjusted EBIT of €680m (2016 period:
€352m). Unit revenues at constant currency
were up 0.5% on the same period 2016 (1.8%
in the second quarter). Unit costs excluding fuel
and currency effects fell by 1.2% (-3.4% in the
second quarter). Cumulative Adjusted EBIT for
the remaining business segments (including consolidation
and reconciliation) were €362m (2016
period: €177m). Fuel costs increased by €223m
compared to the same period in 2016. All performance
indicators and fuel cost include the
first-time consolidation of Brussels Airlines and
the aircraft wet leased from Air Berlin.
At the end of the first half-year, net financial debt
decreased to €1.1bn (year-end 2016: €2.7bn).
Pension provisions came to €8.1bn (year-end
2016: €8.4bn) at an IFRS discount rate of 2.1%
(year-end 2016: 2.1%).
The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG
increases their forecast for the year now from
an Adjusted EBIT “slightly below previous year”
to “above previous year”. The organic capacity
growth in the second half-year is expected to be
4.7%. From today’s perspective, unit revenues
at constant currency will be negative in the second
half-year compared to the same period in
2016. Unit costs excluding fuel and currency effects
should come down marginally in the second
half-year. The fuel cost projection (excluding
consolidation of Brussels Airlines) as of 30
June 2017 indicates a tailwind of approximately
€100m in the second half-year compared to the
same period in 2016. The Air Berlin wet lease
and the first-time consolidated Brussels Airlines
should deliver a small profit. The remainder of
Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s businesses are expected
to deliver a cumulative profit for the second
half-year of 2017, on a par with 2016.
IAI and Honeywell will jointly develop
GPS Anti-Jam Navigation System
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Honeywell
Aerospace have signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop an
advanced GPS Anti-Jam navigation system. As
part of the MOU, IAI and Honeywell are aiming
GPS Anti-Jam combined solution. The new
technology will combine IAI’s existing ADA GPS
Anti-Jamming system together with Honeywell’s
embedded GPS Inertial Navigation System. The
ADA system will be integrated as a subsystem, or
as an embedded module into Honeywell’s navigation
systems. The joint solution is applicable
to military navigation applications (SAASM / P(Y)
Code) and has the provisioning to support future
directives of the GPS directorate (M-Code).
Sabre Corporation, a leading technology provider
to the global travel industry, has reported the firstever
global distribution system (GDS) partnership
with the Lion Group full service Indonesia-based
airline subsidiary, Batik Air. As Batik Air’s first GDS
partner, Sabre’s global network aims to boost the
airline’s growth by expanding their reach and providing
new distribution channels. Indonesia has
one of the world’s largest travel markets with a
growing economy and affluence, creating an in-
creasingly competitive landscape among local
airlines. Batik Air is one of the two full-service airlines
based in Indonesia which flies to 33 domestic
cities, including Jambi and Manokwari – the
latest domestic routes added in April 2017. The
airline also flies internationally to Singapore, and
plans to further their regional outreach to Australia,
India, and Malaysia as part of their business
growth strategy.
Norwegian’s British subsidiary ‘Norwegian UK’
(NUK) has been given tentative approval by the
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for
a foreign air carrier permit. The approval reaffirms
that the NUK application is in full compliance
with the EU–US Open Skies Agreement.
When finalized by the DOT, the permit will allow
Norwegian’s UK subsidiary to operate low-cost
flights between the U.S. and Europe. Norwegian
flies from five UK airports (Gatwick, Birmingham,
Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast) carrying
over 5 million UK passengers each year to
more than 50 destinations. Following a detailed
application with the Civil Aviation Authority, the
‘Norwegian UK’ (NUK) subsidiary was set up in
November 2015 and allows Norwegian to build
on its growing U.K. operation by accessing bilateral
traffic rights to a series of global markets –
NUK has already announced plans for new flights
from London Gatwick to Singapore, starting in
September and Argentina starting in February
2018. Once final approval is received from the
U.S. authorities, Norwegian UK will be able to
establish a seamless operation and more effectively
utilize its long-haul fleet – this includes the
use of the same aircraft on all long-haul routes
such as the U.S., Singapore, Argentina and other
future long-haul markets Norwegian is looking at
Delta’s biometric boarding pass experience that
launched in May at the DCA Delta Sky Club, is
now integrated into the boarding process to allow
eligible Delta SkyMiles Members who are
enrolled in CLEAR to forego a paper or mobile
boarding pass in favor of using fingerprints as
proof of identity to board their plane. The final
phase of Delta’s DCA biometric boarding pass
test, coming this summer, will allow Members to
also use their fingerprints to check a bag. Delta
The DCA pilot is testing how Delta and
CLEAR’s systems work together while laying the
foundation for Delta to deliver a more convenient
customer experience broadly in the future.
Being part of the initial tests means that eligible
customers will be able to traverse DCA as they
do today and simply use their fingerprint instead
of pulling out their boarding pass. Participating
in the test is optional.
Munich Airport’s operating company FMG has
established a new 100% subsidiary for its international
activities. With Munich Airport International
GmbH (MAI), Munich Airport now has a
tailor-made platform for handling international
contracts in the areas of consulting, airport management
and training, previously implemented
by the parent company.
Ever since Munich Airport made headlines back
in 1992 with its smooth and seamless move from
the old site in the east of Munich to the brandnew
airport 30 kilometers away, its input has
been greatly valued by planners relocating airports
and putting new facilities into operation all
over the world. Another reason behind Munich
Airport’s excellent reputation as a service partner
is the truly unique business model operated
by FMG at its home location. Almost all of the
business activities involved in the operation of
an airport are covered by departments or subsidiaries
of the parent company: These include
airport operations, IT, engineering, real estate
services, facility management, fleet management,
a training academy, ground transportation
services, rentals, hotels and catering, and retail.
FMG’s know-how and operational success as a
full-service airport operating company and its
expertise in commissioning new airports have
made it a popular choice as a consultant in the
aviation industry. FMG’s international business
division has provided tailor-made solutions at
more than 50 airports around the globe, including
Bangkok (Thailand), Quito (Ecuador), Madrid
(Spain), Barcelona (Spain), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
and Delhi (India). Apart from airports, customers
include governments, airlines, construction
companies and various consultancies. The
orders have a global reach and demand a high
degree of intercultural awareness. At present
the approximately 70 employees working in
this business segment generate annual sales of
around €10m (US$11.6m).
MAI’s service portfolio covers all aspects of airport
and terminal planning, the commissioning
of new facilities (operational readiness and
airport transfer (ORAT)), operational planning
and process optimization, profit and revenue
optimization, airport privatization consulting,
tailor-made training services and comprehensive
airport management. The FMG business model
makes it possible to offer needs-based consulting
services tailored to the individual customer.
A medium-term goal will be to open sales offices
for Asia, the Middle East and Central and South
America.
Asiana Airlines, one of Asia’s largest carriers,
has begun revenue service with its first A350
aircraft using Panasonic Avionics Corporation’s
(Panasonic) industry-leading inflight entertainment
and connectivity (IFEC) solution. This first
aircraft, which was line fitted with Panasonic solutions
by Airbus, entered passenger service on
May 15, having been delivered to the carrier on
April 26. Panasonic’s eX3 system delivers a premium
passenger experience through features
including audio and video on demand, and a
massive content library that can offer over 50
movies, 60 TV shows, games, music and more.
The aircraft will also offer Panasonic’s global connectivity
service, enabling passengers to access
the Internet via broadband inflight Wi-Fi, and to
send and receive calls and text messages.
Once more the U.S. will allow passengers flying
to U.S. airports from regions including the Middle
East to carry laptops and other electronic devices
on board. The lifting of the ban is subject
to carriers from the region implementing stricter
security controls, which include stricter baggage
screening and the installation of explosives trace
detection measures including explosives-detecting
scanners and bomb-sniffing dogs at the airports.
The ban on laptops and other personal electronic
devices (PEDs) larger than a smartphone
was initially introduced in March this year as
fears mounted over IS terrorists hiding explosives
in batteries and battery compartments.
The ban extended to carriers flying to the U.S.
from ten airports in eight predominantly Muslim
countries: Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, the United
Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and
Turkey, with airlines affected including Royal Jordanian
Airlines; Egypt Air; Turkish Airlines; Saudi
Arabian Airlines; Kuwait Airways; Royal Air Maroc;
Qatar Airways and Emirates. Etihad was the
first airline to be exempted from March’s ban,
while it has been confirmed that Saudi Arabia is
the last to obtain exemption.
The original ban had met with strong opposition,
not only because of its disruptive nature,

especially for business-class passengers, but also
because lithium batteries have long been seen
as a fire risk and thus posed a greater threat if
already expressed concern with the electronics
ban on trans-Atlantic flights because of this risk
of accidental fire, which it said would be even
more difficult to contain if the electronic device
was in the cargo section.
