Wishing Canterbury City FC a successful season in 17/18
Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone
particularly our visitors Erith Town for this
first SCEFL Premier fixture of the 2017/18
season. I hope everyone has an enjoyable visit
to our new “home ground” today as we make
the Charles Sports Ground our base for this
seasons campaign.
I would like to start my first message of the
season with a big thank you to the Committee
of Deal Town FC for allowing us to ground
share here and for their hospitality to date in
making us feel very welcome. I am sure our two
clubs will work well over this season to make
the arrangement a mutually beneficial success as
we continue to work on our own ground and a
return to Canterbury.
To this afternoon’s game then. Following a
poor performance last Saturday and exit from
the FA Cup now is the time for City to put in a
decent league performance. Like all opponents
so early in the season Erith will be something of
an unknown but if we can reproduce some of
the pre-season performances then City can certainly
be a match for any Premier league team
this season. We welcome a number of new faces
in positions across the team as we look to improve
significantly on our league standing last
season. In that regard a thank you to Quinn
Estates for coming on board as Official 1st
Team Partner this season with their logo looking
impressive on the back of the shirts. I am
also pleased to welcome a number of other new
sponsors this season and note their hoardings
pitch side and details on our social media and
programme.
In other news our “elusive” stadium took a step
closer over the summer with formal Heads of
Terms signed with Quinn Estates committing
City to a planning application at the proposed
Highland Court site near Bridge, Canterbury.
My current information from Mark Quinn is
that a planning application in December 2017 is
likely. The club are currently working with 3G
pitch and spectator stand suppliers to fully cost
out our football hub vision. Finally our link up
with Canterbury Christ Church University takes
an important step forward as our joint collaboration
team CC Sport kicks off in the Kent
County League later this month.
Enjoy the match
What They Said About Us…… Sutton Common Rovers
A view of what our opponents saw when
they recently played us.
Farrell and Ferdinando on target as firsts hit cup
success By Gary Brigden
The first team progressed to the preliminary
round of the FA Cup for only the second time
in their history, when two goals in seven minutes
either side of half time took the passed Southern
Counties East League side Canterbury City.
With seven debutants, and missing skipper Aaron
Bogle and forward Daryl Cooper-Smith,
SCR made a slow start to the game, and allowed
the visitors to have the better of proceedings,
and Craig Bradshaw made a decent save low to
his left on five minutes from Matt Martin.
Canterbury had another decent chance to open
the scoring on 11 minutes when a misdirected
Bradshaw clearance gifted them a throw in, the
ball was quickly played in to Dave Pilcher, and it
was only a timely challenge by Anson Cousins
that prevented him from getting a shot away.
SCR's first efforts on goal came on the quarter
hour when Matt Ferdinando and Matty Auletta
both had efforts blocked by the City backline.
SCR were almost gifted the lead when Delo's
misplaced clearance was picked up by Cousins,
and played in to Jordan Gallagher, his shot
though was well blocked by Pat Nzuzi and the
chance went begging.
Gallagher almost found Liam Holden midway
through the half, but Delo was out sharply to
smother the effort, and as the half wore on, SCR
were getting on top.
Craig Hastings found his way into the book on
27 minutes after a foul on Dan Wisker, but the
free kick came to nothing. James Taylor planted
a header wide on the half hour, and five minutes
later Ferdinando and Gallagher combined to set
up Matt Farrell but he pushed his effort wide of
the left hand post.
Pilcher fired an effort wide of the right hand
post on 38 minutes, and SCR ended the half
brightly. A Cousins free kick on 44 minutes
found its way to Auletta but his effort was deflected
behind for a corner and from the corner
Canterbury failed to clear, Farrell bought a tremendous
save out of Delo, but reacted quickest
to fire SCR ahead at the break.
25
It was 2-0 six minutes into the second half. Having
started brightly and forced several corners,
SCR were awarded a free kick on the half way
line. Lewis played the ball forward, players leapt
and the ball dropped to Ferdinando who fired
home low to Delo's left, giving SCR some
breathing space.
Canterbury looked to reduce the arrears on 57
minutes when we conceeded possession to the
lively Pulman, he skipped beyond Taylor and
laid the ball in to Pilcher but his effort was well
over the crossbar.
Darren Salmon made his first change just after
the hour mark with Francois Gabbidon
replacing Liam Holden, who had worked
his socks off up top. Canterbury went close
again on 67 minutes when we failed to clear a
free kick from the right, and the ball dropped
kindly to Pat Nzuzi, but his effort was blocked
by Hastings.
A minute later, and having got the better of Josh
McCallum, Gabbidon saw his low strike comfortably
saved by Delo. Taylor followed his centre
half partner into the book on 70 minutes,
after he bought down Rob Lawrence as the Canterbury
man headed towards goal.
Canterbury were now in the ascendancy and
were putting us under more pressure, forcing
numerous corners but our backline was holding
firm, and Connor Saunders saw an effort deflected
behind by Cousins.
Danny Fernandez replaced Auletta on 73
minutes, as Salmon looked to wrestle control of
the game back to SCR and his first real impact
was to fire a free kick wide of the left hand post.
Ferdinando found his way into the book on 77
minutes after he spoke out of turn following a
Saunders challenge, and two minutes later he
was replaced by Andrew White.
The game threatened to boil over on 83 minutes
when White was hit by a poor challenge by
Nzuzi, sparking handbags and plenty of pushing
and shoving. In the end Bradshaw, White and
Nzuzi all found their way into the book.
Full time came though with no further addition
to the score, and SCR progressed through to a
tough tie with Eastbourne Town.

Last Time We Hosted Erith Town In The League by Kevin Olver
Continued
With the watch clicking into stoppage time,
Erith - against the run of play - put themselves
in front. A shot come cross came in from the
left, Hawkes might have got a touch as he
arched backwards but the ball hit the bar came
back down and as Erith instantly appealed for a
goal, it was thumped over the line from a foot
out to make totally sure and give the visitors a
slender half-time lead at 0-1.
It was important that City got back into the
game as quickly as possible after the break and
they made an early change bringing on Martin
for Clarke as he fell victim to yet another heavy
challenge effectively ending the midfielder's
game. The change was to prove inspired because
after only a minute on the pitch Martin
scored City's equaliser. A hurried clearance from
Hawkes, as he attempted to get his team rapidly
on the attack flew kindly through the middle
and Pulman, ever alert, quickly took possession
as Erith dithered and he fed the ball forward for
Martin to run on into the box. He rode a couple
of challenges before switching feet and cleverly
slipping the ball past Anibaba for 1-1.
The visitors responded well to their setback and
took the game to City in an effort to regain the
lead and for a while looked the more likely to
score. Friend fired straight at Hawkes from thirty-five
yards and then tested the keeper again
with a curling shorter range effort that was just
tracking inside the keeper's left-hand post. Soon
after he was then afforded far too much time on
the edge of the City box to turn before shooting
a foot over the bar.
City then made their second change with Yome
returning from injury coming on to replace Hassan.
Although City were being pegged back a
little, they had the next chance to score when a
ball headed out from a corner fell to Harvey in
the box, he steadied himself before hitting a
ferocious volley over the bar and well away into
the Homelands darkness. As City made their
final change, Lawrence for Conlon, they began
to start prising Erith open again but several
times they just couldn't get the final ball right
and added to that, two or three corners just
passed them by without anything being created.
Yome and Martin were leading the City pressure
down their respective wings but despite all this
they almost fell behind when Friend made some
space in the box but with other options available,
thankfully for City, he could only find the
side netting.
With about a minute of the ninety to go, City
looked to have missed a golden opportunity to
grab the points when Yome, with just Anibaba
to beat, saw the keeper make another excellent
sprawling save to deny him. However it was still
to be City's day as in the very last minute a shot
was once again blocked out by Anibaba but this
time the ball fell perfectly for Nunn and he took
great delight in lashing the ball into the Erith
net from close range for 2-1 and the eventual
winner. Erith tried to respond but apart from a
shot from Clark which skidded up straight to
Hawkes from distance, City managed to keep
them at arm's length ensuring a much needed
league victory and a precious three points.
An excellent win for City in a tight but entertaining
game which on the balance of play and
chances created ended with the right result.
Final score City 2 Erith 1
City; Daren Hawkes, Chris Webber, Pat Nzuzi,
Gary Clarke (Matt Martin), Laurence Harvey,
Josh McCallum, Sam Conlon (Rob Lawrence),
Alfie Nunn, Ian Pulman, Dave Pilcher, Taser
Hassan (Mikey Yome).
A MESSAGE FROM:
THE MANAGER, Ben Smith
It's seemed like a lifetime but we are finally
here, ready and excited for the new season. Pre
season does a good job of wetting the appetite
but there is nothing like the start of the new
league season. So we now move into my third
season as manager of the club and it gives me
immense pride to lead the club forward into
what we hope and now firmly believe will be
extremely exciting times. I'm the wrong person
to talk about the 'stadium' and there have been
a lot of false dawns but I wouldn't be at the
club if I didn't have faith in the chairman to
deliver on this. The work going on behind the
scenes in order to support myself and management
team to get the best possible outcomes
on the pitch, long term, is fantastic and is greatly
appreciated.
To go out of the FA cup at the first hurdle was
disappointing coming off the back of a really
positive pre season but for me this was certainly
low down in terms of priorities and we will
be determined to turn this result around when
we face them in around 4 weeks in the vase.
The reports that we had on Sutton led us to
believe that they would be a strong side and
this turned our to be accurate but we will take
confidence in that chances for either side were
at a premium and we were missing some important
players which will inevitably make us a
stronger proposition in the return game.
We have a number of new faces at the club
who we believe can help us achieve our ambitions,
please join
me in welcoming
the following
players: Gary
Sayer, Joe Kennett, Joe Nelder, Billy Lewins,
Connor Sanders, Mike Turner, Jack Delo and
Ian Pulman. In terms of the management team
we are pleased to welcome: Mike Tritton
(Assistant Coach), Joel Skrupski (Kit Man ,
Sports Analyst), Alice Lee (Massage Therapist).
With only a small, loyal following it is important
that we are vocal in our support of the
players in order to get that extra percentage in
their performances so please get behind them.
We are also looking for player sponsors at £50
for the season, if you or anyone else might be
interested please let us know.
Today we have a tricky opener in my opinion
against Erith. On paper many would expect us
to walk the game considering their league position
last year but they have made wholesale
changes and invested in a new group of players
so this will be a much tougher game than many
expect. For us to reach our ambitions we need
to make the Charles Ground a fortress and that
needs to start today! We are without Laurence
Harvey (Injury), Gary Sayer (Suspension) and
Gary Clarke (Suspension) but we hope that the
improved strength in depth will pay dividends
today.
CITY ROUND UP
After some pretty impressive pre-season
matches City’s season began with an FA Cup
Match away at Sutton Common Rovers. We
were expecting a difficult tie as our opponents
had strengthened their team during the summer.
The game itself was admittedly not the best we
have ever seen, and the contrast in the weather
– sunny, thunderstorms and sunny again - was
a bit like the contrast we had seen from the
City side pre-season.
The stop start flow to the game, when players
were showing their frustrations meant goal
chances were few and far between, but Rovers
took theirs and we were beaten 2-0. We now
hope to gain revenge when Sutton Common
Rovers visit us in the FA Vase on 9th September.
City made some very impressive signings during
the summer with quite a few of the 16/17
Herne Bay squad moving to us.
We know Jack Delo, Michael Turner, Gary
Sayer, Joe Nelder and Connor Sanders will be
made welcome, and hope they enjoy there time
with City.
Also returning are Joe Kennett, Ian Pulman
and Shannon Harris.
Young prospect Billy Lewins joins us from
Ramsgate.
We are also very pleased to have kept the majority
of the 16/17 squad as CP, Pat, Gazza,
Gary, Laurence, Pilch, Wisk, Rob, Matt, Sam,
Josh, Dom and Charlie.
Manager Ben Smith therefore starts the season
with a squad of 22 players.
We wish Chris Webber and Daren Hawkes
well at their new club Sittingbourne.
Off the pitch, we would like to congratulate
Sam Conlon and his wife Lauren, sister of
Gary Mickleborough, who were married on
Friday. We wish them all the best for the future.
The Southern Counties East Football League
strongly support recent FA statements that there
should be a zero tolerance approach against racism
and all forms of discrimination, accordingly
any form of discriminatory abuse whether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexual
orientation, gender, faith, age, ability or any other form of abuse will be reported
to The relevant County Association for action by that Association.
Sam, at Faversham Town pre-season
Last Time We Hosted Erith Town In The League by Kevin Olver
3rd December, 2016
Canterbury City 2 Erith Town 1
Matt Martin(51), Alfie Nunn(89) Att. 44
City completed a hat-trick of victories against
Erith Town this season, coming from behind to
grab all three points with a ninetieth minute
strike. It was an open game with several chances
at both ends from which either side could have
won, but it was the City that just edged it with
their dramatic late winner.
Although Erith had the first effort on goal with
Simms firing wide in the first minute, it was their
defence that was looking decidedly uneasy and
hesitant against City's relentless attacking play.
Keeper Anibaba almost pushed the ball over his
own line in the second minute before just managing
to keep the ball out while Pulman latched
onto a short back pass and found Pilcher who
made space but just tucked his shot narrowly
wide.
City's next two chances came and went when
some lovely interplay down the left between
Hassan and Nzuzi ended with Conlon finishing
the move just lifting his header over the Erith
bar and they followed this when, after some
great play by Pulman, Clarke saw his long range
effort tipped over the bar by Anibaba just as
Pulman was clattered to the floor as he set
Clarke up.
In City's next move Pilcher took the ball down
well before seeing his volley well saved by Anibaba
before City were then split asunder as
Friend broke down the right before seeing his
cross spooned over the bar by Coburn from a
position free in the box but on the stretch. City
were soon to be hampered by several heavy challenges
as Hassan, Clarke and Nunn were all victims
of some robust Erith tackling. Despite this
however, it was still City doing the majority of
the attacking as Pulman latched on to a forward
ball only to see his fierce shot cannon off Anibaba
straight back to him but, under pressure
from a defender he hit the rebound wide. Nunn
then saw a shot saved before Hassan was the
latest to be sent tumbling again, this proving to
23
be one foul too many as the referee was forced
to produce the first yellow card for Erith's Palmer.
Pilcher swung the free kick in but it just eluded
Nunn chasing in, the ball needing just the
merest of touches to turn it home.
The game was opening up as Erith finally began
to respond and create some better chances
themselves. City keeper Hawkes comfortably
saved a shot on the break while Friend did well
to get himself into a position on the right to put
in a dangerous cross, but none of his team mates
had got forward in support. Clark failed to trouble
Anibaba with a low shot before Friend tested
Hawkes once more with a fierce shot thumped
goalwards following a mix up in the City defence.
Another visitor's attack was well defended
out for a fruitless corner while at the other end a
Webber low, whipped in cross just eluded Pulman
and Pilcher. On thirty-six minutes City had
their best chance to open the scoring when after
some lovely play by Nzuzi down the left as he
tiptoed past several challenges into the Erith
box, he laid the ball off to Conlon whose bullet
shot was blocked by a combination of defender
and keeper, with both throwing themselves at
the ball it was difficult to see which one of them
managed to block a certain goal.
It was end to end in the run up to the break as
Friend beat the offside trap but wastefully fired
wide when well placed and James tried his luck
from forty yards, Hawkes watchfully seeing the
ball safely over the City bar. Anibaba then did
well to palm out a Pilcher cross just as Pulman
was poised to head home with Erith rather lucky
to scramble the ball clear as City kept up the
pressure. Another great chance soon went begging
for City as a lovely little reverse flick over
the defence fell right for Pilcher, he steadied
himself, picked his spot but was thwarted by
Anibaba who spread himself superbly to beat
away the ball.
Formed in 1956 as Woolwich Town, the
Dockers attained senior status in 1995-96 upon
reaching the London Spartan League Premier
Division in 1995-96.
By that time the club had already changed their
name to Erith Town, reflecting a move to Erith
Stadium.
After one year in the Spartan Premier, the
Dockers successfully applied to cross the Pyramid
to the Kent League.
After struggling in the lower reaches of the
League for three seasons, the Dockers celebrated
the new Millennium with a then best
seventh place in 1999-2000 and also reached
the London Senior Cup Final, losing 5-1 to
Bedfont.
In the following seven seasons Erith only once
reached such heights again, finishing seventh
in 2003-4.
The appointment of former Fisher Athletic
player Mark Tompkins as player-manager midway
through 2006-7 saw an upturn in fortunes
and the following season he led the team to
fifth in the Kent League. He also brought the
club their first silverware as a senior club as
record appearance maker Alan Hanlon lifted
the Kent League Cup after a 1-0 win over
much-fancied Hythe Town in the Final at
Folkestone.
Tommo’s departure on the eve of 2008-9 lead
to the appointment of Steve O’Boyle who
took the Dockers back to the Kent League
Cup Final for a second season. Despite drawing
1-1 after extra time against Croydon, the
Dockers went down 3-1 on penalties.
Tony Russell took over the reins when
O’Boyle departed in October 2010 guiding the
club to a third successive mid table finish but
7
bringing the Kent Senior Trophy to the club
after a 3-1 win over Tunbridge Wells in the
Final.
Having achieved a new best of fourth the following
season, Russell departed for neighbours
VCD Athletic with Erith Town top of the
League in November 2012 and after a brief
spell with James Collins in charge, Mark
Tompkins returned to take the Dockers to
new personal best of third spot.
Tommo repeated the feat in 2013-14 before
departing and a turbulent 2014-15 saw three
managers and a Houdini style escape from
relegation under Martin and Joe Ford. Seven
points adrift with three games remaining the
Father and Son team saw their young side win
the final three games to climb off the foot of
the table.
Two further seasons of struggle followed before
the summer takeover by local businessman
Mark Deveney, immediately appointing
former owner Albert Putnam as President for
his work as player, manager and Chairman in
over 50 years with the club.
Mark moved quickly to bring in Adam Holloway
from SCEFL Division One Champions
Glebe and has expanded the club committee as
the club look forward optimistically to a new
future.
SCEFL
ROUND UP
The season started with Emirates FA Cup
matches for the majority of teams, and so the
opening League fixtures are scheduled for today.
Kicking off the season were Crowborough who
last Friday were at their new temporary home at
Maidstone United, against Lingfield in the FA
Cup. City also played Lingfield on a Friday at
Whyteleaf two seasons ago, in the days when
the season didn’t start with an FA Cup match.
Crowborough finished 2-0 victors, although
their opening goal was highly disputed, earning
3 yellows and a red card for Lingfield.
On the Saturday, there were plenty of “all
SCEFL” matches in The FA Cup. Croydon
had an impressive 3-2 victory at Whitstable
Town, Sheppey United beat AFC Croydon 3-2,
a 9 man Glebe beat Lordswood away 1-0, and
Tunbridge Wells saw off Beckenham Town 1-0.
Two other all SCEFL ties ended up needing
replays.
Bearsted and Canterbury City were hoping to
play each other in the next round but their opponents
Eastbourne Town and Sutton Common
Rovers will meet instead.
In the Tuesday night replays, our new landlords
had a good 4-1 win against Corinthian, but
Deal’s keeper was sent off near the end. Under
the new regulations red card suspensions take
affect 7 days after the offence.
Rusthall travelled to CB Hounslow after Sunday’s
0-0 draw, which was their first ever FA
Cup match. The replay was a 2-1 victory for CB
Hounslow.
Last Friday night’s SCEFL Division One opener
newly promoted and title favourites Punjab
United drew 2-2 with FC Elmstead in front of
an impressive gate reported as 300. City travel
to Gravesend to face Punjab United in the
Kent Senior Trophy in September.
WHAT THE PAPERS SAID THIS WEEK IN… APRIL
Snippets of news from activities involving Canterbury
City, mainly during their Southern
League years, as published in the Kent Gazette.
1969 - Former Wolves and England centre-half
Billy Wright was due to appear at Kingsmead
Stadium in a charity match which could decide
the fate of City manager Roy Evans. The match
was between an International Managers’ side
and a Kent Managers’ representative team, and
Evans said unless it generated more support
for football in the City, he would resign at the
end of the season.
“As I’ve stated on a few public occasions since
taking over as City manager at the end of last
season, the big issue in my mind was not how I
should or could improve the City side, but rather
how do I get the general public in Canterbury
to support the club,” he said.
Wright was one of a host of players lined up to
play at Kingsmead. Others due to appear were
Tommy Docherty, Danny Blanchflower, Eddie
Firmani, Johnny Haynes, Bobby Robson, Don
Howe, Dave Sexton and Bill McGarry.
1974 - Canterbury City manager Alf Bentley
reckoned his side were on course for one of
their best ever campaigns after finishing their
pre-season programme with four straight wins.
A Tosher Brown goal was enough to give them
victory over a Gillingham XI and Bentley declared:
“We now have a stronger club, playing
wise, than ever before.”
1976 - Fighting broke out after Canterbury
City’s not very friendly 3-1 pre-season victory
at Whitstable. Tension which had built up during
the game boiled over in the bar while players
and supporters were having a drink and
they spilled out on to the Belmont pitch where
punches were thrown. Much of the trouble
centered around an incident a few minutes
from the end of the game when City striker
Ray Hales was sent off after a clash with Town
defender Roger Wilkinson.
1977 - A last minute headed goal from Bob
Walter, playing his last game for Canterbury
City, salvaged a 2-2 draw against Athenian
League side Leyton Wingate at Kingsmead.
Wingate had led 2-0 after an hour, but debutant
Geoff Salter replied with 13 minutes remaining
and, right on time, Walter raced in to meet
Laurie Prior’s inswinging corner.
1984 - With just three friendly games behind
him, 17 year old goalkeeper Andy Widdett was
set for his Southern League debut with Canterbury
City. Widdett, who had previously been
with Wrexham, was signed by City manager Alf
Bentley, as emergency cover for first choice
Dave Huddart - sidelined for at least a month
following a knee operation.
“I contacted a number of Football League
clubs to find a more experienced replacement
for Dave, but the truth is simply that there is a
shortage of good keepers at the moment,” said
Bentley. “But Andrew has certainly not let us
down and has proved that he is a competent
and capable deputy.”
1986 - Canterbury City secretary and former
chairman Vic Heslop resigned over a difference
of opinion over club policy. Derek Thompson,
City secretary for three years until 1974, took
over the post in a reorganisation of the committee.
Manager Carl Gilbert had only 12 players
available for City’s first Southern League
match of the new season at Gravesend with
players either injured, not available or still away
on holiday.
1987 - Canterbury City manager Phil Nash said
strengthening last season’s leaky defence was
not as much of a priority as he had thought
after a fine display in the 1-1 pre-season friendly
draw with Gillingham. He urged his back
four to show the form consistently throughout
the Southern League season.
1997 - Canterbury City boss Martin Farnie
stepped up his search for a new goalkeeper
following a pre-season injury to Mark Rees.
The virtual ever-present from the previous
campaign sustained the injury during the annual
Frank Norris Trophy match against Ashford
and despite having been fit for the opening
league game the previous Saturday, the injury
was giving the boss cause for concern.
The Southern Counties East Football League supports the ‘Swearing –
Let’s Tackle It’ campaign and strongly condemns
the use of foul and abusive language
at football matches
WE’VE COMMUNITY MET BEFORE: NEWS
ERITH TOWN (part 1) by Dave Morgan
Last season City were something of a bogie side for todays visitors Erith Town recording three
victories include a cup win in the league cup. However, that belies the general trend which had
seen Erith, and previously under the name Woolwich, have the upper hand. Elsewhere you will
find a report from last seasons clash but here we take a look back at some of those past meetings
where City have hosted Erith although I hope our visitors will forgive me for glossing over the
game at Homelands at the end of the 2015/16 season that saw them return home with the points
following a comfortable 6-0 victory!
September 14th 1996
During Woolwich Town’s first season in the Kent League City had the better of things with a
single goal success at Kingsmead Stadium and then battling out a goal-less fixture in the return.
That first meeting was won by a goal midway through the first half from midfielder Julian Beal
who curled an exquisite shot past visiting keeper Craig Clark from just outside the penalty area.
August 23rd 1997
Just 27 spectators turned up at Kingsmead Stadium to witness City’s first game against the newly
badged Erith Town. Paul Henry did the damage for visitors completing his hat-trick early in the
second half. His first came after 8 minutes as the City defence hesitated, waiting for keeper Mark
Rees to come out and clear before adding a second on 37 minutes after Gary Miller’s poor header
gifted him the chance to lob Rees. Four minutes into the second half the points were sealed
when Henry rose unchallenged to head home. Miller pulled one back with ten minutes left before
David Gear received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card. Substitute
Kevin Holt added a fourth Erith goal in stoppage time to cap an afternoon that ended with City
boss Martin Farnie resigning.
September 26th 1998
City entered this game on a 6 game unbeaten run and not having conceded a goal for 5 hours.
City’s Gary Hake opened the scoring from Dan Hudd’s free-kick only for Franklyn Dixson to
equalise early in the second half with a disputed penalty. With 18 minutes left Dixson turned
provider for Graham Daniels to head home. Ten minutes from time City were presented with a
chance to rescue a point only for keeper Martyn Panting to save Lee Smith’s penalty.
August 7th 1999 Lost 0-2
City manager Simon Tutt bemoaned a disappointing performance in this opener to the new season.
He felt that his side could have played for 5 matches and probably not scored as goals after
14 minutes from Barrett and then Trevor Heselden on 69 minutes gave the visitors a comfortable
victory.
August 19th 2000 Lost 0-1
This single goal defeat was probably one of City’s best performances during this disastrous season.
t City manager Bill Tucker maintained that scorer Dean Bowey was at least three yards offside
when he collected the ball to score after 71 minutes. Andy Constable, yes that much travelled
Andy Constable, led the protests but managed only to get himself booked.
Match Day Sponsor & Man of the Match for the John Barlow Award
This season in honour of
the late John Barlow we
will be inviting our match
day sponsors to chose the
man of the match, and
present the award. At the
end of the season the
player with the most
awards will be presented
with the John Barlow trophy.
Laurence Harvey was the proud winner of the 16/17 John Barlow Award. We see him here
being presented with the shield by Maddie Cook.
22/04/17 City v Lordswood - Man of the Match, Gary Clarke
City supporter Ian
Cowley presented
Gary Clarke with the
Man of the Match
award in City’s final
home match of
16/17.
It seems like a long
time ago, but I can
remember City taking
an early lead through
Joe Halford and after
that we ended up
losing 3-1 after facing
a very determined
Lordswood side who needed one point to be mathematically safe from relegation.
Gary is missing the first three games of 17/18 as he serves a three match suspension for being
at the receiving end of some very rough tactics in the following weeks’ and final game of
the season at Erith & Belvedere.
SAY goodbye to garden centres, so long to the will take some getting past. York City will be
WE’VE MET BEFORE:
ERITH TOWN (part 2) by Dave Morgan
April 14th 2012 Lost 1-3
This game opened in farcical scenes as City started in their maroon shirts whilst the visitors wore
black and dark red stripes! It was obvious to all that this was a recipe for a clash of colours and
the referee stopped the game and required the visitors to wear training bibs over their shirts! It
didn’t appear to unsettle the visitors and Nick Davis gave them an early lead. City brought themselves
level during added time at the end of the first half when Michael Smissen headed home
Jack Tanner’s cross. Early in the second half Davis restored his sides lead heading home unchallenged
before a goal from Gordon sealed the points once again for the visitors.
March 26th 2013 Won 3-0
City took the lead on twenty minutes. A badly miscued attempted clearance by an Erith defender
skied up in the air heading towards his own goal. Eacott, back-pedalling furiously, decided to attempt
a clearance with a header. Unfortunately, he failed to get much on it and it fell straight to
Johnson who had the relatively straightforward job of stabbing the ball home. On thirty-one
minutes Alex Nelson broke into the Erith box and drilled the ball past the advancing Eacott.
Then on seventy minutes, Kane Rice swung in a low corner from the left and it went through and
past several players at the near post before Nelson poked it home from close range
March 15th 2014 Lost 0-2
The sending off of Erith's Callum O'Shea for some verbals directed straight at the referee should
have signalled a great opportunity for City to press on and win following a goalless first half.
However, eight minutes after the restart, a long ball hoisted into the City box saw Hayward caught
in no-mans land and two simple headers later the ball was in the back of an unguarded City net.
On 69 minutes Erith bagged their threatened second. N'woko powered in along the dead-ball line
and Scott just tapped his man in the tackle, giving away a penalty, from which Jeffrey slammed the
ball home, giving Hayward no chance.
