01 MESSAGE TO THE HERD The Month of July just came to a close and a few short weeks ago the nation celebrated Independence Day. The Chips celebrated in our traditional way by hosting the clubs annual 4th of July free 5 Mile Race. Thanks to the efforts of RD George Parrot, and club volunteers we continued the tradition of keeping the race free of charge. In addition, the club raised money for WEAVE and the American River Parkway Foundation. The last few months we have seen some significant club happenings, from Andrew Burrs AG World Record in the 10 Miler, while visiting his Grandparents in New York, to the clubs new partnership with Science in Sport from, the UK. As a first term High Dunger, I have learned a lot. One thing I have learned is how big the clubs presence in the Sacramento running scene is. From the five classic races we host and sponsor, Jed Smith Ultras, Free 4th of July 5 Mile Race, Susan B Anthony 5k, Buffalo Stampede, Willow Hills Cross Country Runs, to the clubs presence at numerous other races and events. When a local major race needs last minute assistance, the Buffalo Chips is where they turn first. No other club in Sacramento has the ability to pull it off. None of this is possible without the support of our membership. You, the members, have taken the time out of your lives to volunteer at races and put the clubs best foot forward to the Sacramento Running Public. Thanks for being a member of the Buffalo Chips! COACH’S CORNER 02 By Training Coordinator Teddy Morris A Symphony In C-I-M In composing a training plan for the <strong>2017</strong> edition of the California International Marathon, I took notes from last year’s schedule and adapted it to the time-frame of this year’s training season in order to achieve the best possible outcome for the members who follow the plan with a consistent level of participation during the upcoming training period. In fact, I even threw in an extra week of training into the typical 16-week plan to give everyone that added measure of confidence that they will indeed be successful in reaching their race goal for the marathon on Sunday, December 3rd.! As a prelude to the official start of the training period on August 7th, it is my suggestion that hopeful marathoners will have a good running base of being able to run 12-13 miles confidently, as the mile increments go up from that point, and have an overall weekly mileage total of around 25-30 miles per week to begin the training period. Since I know that our members have a wide range of time availability, with regards to their personal training opportunities, I have set the minimum number of days for training at 4 per week–with the recommendation that more training days per week are advantageous to the overall outcome of race day goals. Therefore, a participant can set their own tempo in deciding what time and resources they can devote to following this training plan based on their personal real-life situation. Since I realize that many participants wanted to sign-up for the Buffalo Stampede 10-Miler in September and the Urban Cow Half-Marathon in October, I have included those two races within the official schedule for this year’s training period. When looking over the entire training plan, you will notice that the weeks are arranged so that there is a long run one weekend, than a shorter run the next weekend, which is then followed up by another longer run the week after that one. In musical terms, this would be described as a “crescendo” and “decrescendo” in a particular passage. The same can be said for the weekly long run goals during this running plan. Each week, we will slightly increase the long runs we attempt, then go back a few miles the following week, but come back even longer the week after the lower mileage run. This slow but sure progression will help our participants add training endurance to their weekly totals so that they will be physically and mentally ready for the requirements of the marathon on race day. It will all come together as one hard-fought and self-satisfying orchestration of the time and energy they put into preparing to reach that finish line! So, if you have signed-up for the California International Marathon this year, and are laying out your plans to train for the race, look over the “16(+1)-Week Marathon Training Plan” that is listed on the Buffalo Chips Running Club website and, even better, I encourage you to come out and join our enthusiastic ensemble as we create beautiful marathon music together!
