LITERACY<br />
Department of <strong>Education</strong>, and ACA. Budget cuts have also<br />
impacted correctional education. Over the last year and a half,<br />
voluntary buyouts, retirements and attrition has resulted in a<br />
reduction from 91 educators to 60 full-time education staff.<br />
Grant funding continues to assist in providing educational<br />
programming. These funds assist the Department in providing<br />
books and supplies in the classroom, student computer labs, and<br />

It is the goal of <strong>Programs</strong> Unit to provide quality, evidence-based<br />
programs, education and services to the offender population<br />
in an effort for the offender to prepare for successful return<br />
to the community. Programming provided is directed toward<br />
supporting long term behavioral change with the goal of<br />
reducing recidivism. Achieving this goal helps the Department<br />
meet the mission: protect the public, protect the employee,<br />
and protect the offender.<br />
