Egypt is known for it’s ancient
history,desert,landscapes and large pyramids.It’s a
country that’s located in Northern Africa along the
mediterranean and red seas.Egypt was also controlled
by a ruler named Menza. He began the cycle
of rule by egypt various pharaohs.Egypt shares
borders with Gaza,Strip,Israel,Libya and Sudan.The
highest point in Egypt is Mount Catherine at 8.625
feet while its lowest point is the aatara depression.
5
The climate of Egypt is desert and as such it had very
dry summers and mild winter.
There’s 2 different lands called Red Land and Black Land. The red land was the
barren desert that protected Egypt on two sides. These deserts separated ancient
from Egypt from neighboring countries and invading armies. The black land was
the fertile land on the banks of the nile. The ancient Egyptians used this land for
growing their crops. This area was the only land in ancient Egypt that could be
formed because a layer or rich black silt was deposited there every year after the
nile flooded. The ancient Egyptians thought of Egypt as being divided into two
type of land “black” and “red”.
The Great
Sphnix of Giza
By: Kayla Mayden
THE MOST INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE STATUE ASSOCIATED
WITH ANCIENT EGYPT AND AMONG THE MOST FAMOUS IN
THE WORLD.
The Sphinx of Giza is a symbol
that has represented the
essence of Egypt for thousands
of years. Even with all
of the pictures that we see
of the Sphinx, nothing can
really prepare you for the
time that you finally see the
Sphinx with your own eyes.
Carved from the bedrock of
the Giza plateau, the Sphinx
is truly a mysterious marvel
from the days of ancient
Egypt. The body of a lion with
the head of a king or god, the
sphinx has come to symbolize
strength and wisdom.
From the north side the
profile of the Sphinx reveals
the proportion of the body
to the head. It would appear
as though the head is small
in proportion to the body.
Because of the changing
desert terrain, the body of
the Sphinx has been buried
several times over the past
several thousand years.
Most recently in 1905, the
sand has been cleared away
to expose the magnitude
and beauty of the entirety
of the Sphinx. The paws
themselves are 50 feet long
(15m) while the entire length
is 150 feet (45m). The head
is 30 (10m) feet long and
14 feet (4m) wide. Because
certain layers of the stone
are softer than others, there
is a high degree of erosion
that has claimed the original
detail of the carved figure.
The most popular and current
theory of the builder
of the Sphinx holds that it
was commissioned by the
4th Dynasty King, Khafre
(2558-2532 BCE). Khafre was
one of the sons of Khufu
(AKA Cheops). The Sphinx
lines up with the Pyramid
of Khafre at the foot of its
causeway. As one rounds the
northeast corner to the front
of the Sphinx, the alignment
of the two structures
becomes more apparent.
In between the paws of the
Sphinx is a stela, now called
the “Dream Stela”, which is
inscribed with a story. The
18th Dynasty story tells of
the time that Thutmosis IV
fell asleep under the Sphinx
which was covered to the
neck in sand. Thutmosis had
a dream that the Sphinx
spoke to him and promised
that if he would free
the Sphinx from the sand,
Thutmosis would be destined
to become king of Egypt.
ARCHITECTURE:
EGYPTIAN COURT HOUSE
BY: DEMETRIUS MORRIS
EGYPTIAN STRUCTURES STILL RESONATE IN THE
PRESENT DAY BECAUSE THEY WERE CONCEIVED,
DESIGNED, & RAISED TO TELL AN ETERNAL STORY
The Supreme Constitutional Court i
Not only does the courthouse
have many of the main architectural
features of the ancient Greek
buildings, but it has one important
Roman feature as well. There is a
large dome located just behind
the main entrance to the building.
This dome is a purely Roman
aspect of architecture, as the
Romans were the ones to create it.
The courthouse incorporates many
classical elements into one building.
It represents a fusion of the
Greek architectural aspects with the
Roman ones. This building could be
considered some sort of classical revival,
as it includes ancient features.
The courthouse would be designed
to include ancient features because
of its function. It is a building
dedicated purely to democracy and
justice, so the use of ancient Greek
architectural aspects makes sense.
The Broome County Courthouse is
proof that ancient designs still work
for today’s activities. It is incredible
to imagine that elements of design
that were created in the BC years
could still be applied to a functional
building thousands of years later.
The fact that the Broome County
Courthouse uses ancient Greek and
Roman elements proves the pure
genius of the ancient architects.
Elements such as columns, pediments,
and domes, have a variety
of uses and are often used in many
buildings throughout the world. The
use of these elements shows the
versatility of the ancient designs.
Throughout the United States,
ancient designs are well used. In a
country founded on Democracy, it
makes sense that there are many architectural
elements taken from the
first Democracy ever, the Greeks. In
some ways, United States architecture
is a tribute to the founders of
Democracy. It is able to combine a
modern usage with the old elements
that were created during ancient
times. This proves that Ancient
Greek and Roman architecture is an
ever-present and ever-lasting style
GODS: RULERS OF
ANCIENT EGYPT
Osiris (Asir) was the first son of
Geb and Nut and the brother
of Set, Horus (the elder), Isis
and Nephthys. He was one of
the most prominent gods of the
Heliopolitan Ennead, but his worship
pre-dated the development
of this fairly complex philosophy.
Although Atum was installed as
the head of the Ennead by the
priests of Heliopolis, Osiris was
considered to be the king of the
underworld, and is the only deity
who is referred to simply as “god”.
This gives us some indication of
his prominence and popularity.
The oldest religious texts known
to us refer to him as the great god
of the dead, who once possessed
human form and lived upon earth.
After his murder by Set he became
the king of the underworld
and presided over the judgment
of dead souls. In order to enter
his kingdom, the deceased had to
undertake a perilous journey (aided
by spells and amulets) to the
hall of judgment where their heart
was balanced against the feather
of Ma’at (justice or balance). It is
important to distinguish this from
the Christian view of judgment.
The ancient Egyptians were a
pragmatic people. A person was
not expected to be perfect, just
balanced.
ANUBIS: TO DECAY
AAnubis is the Egyptian god of mummification
and the afterlife as well as
the patron god of lost souls and the
helpless. He is one of the oldest gods
of Egypt, who most likely developed
from the earlier (and much older)
jackal god Wepwawet with whom he is
often confused.
A story recorded in the first millenium
BCE tells how the wicked god Set
disguised himself as a leopard to
approach the body of Osiris. He was
seized by Anubis and branded all
over with a hot iron. This, according
to Egyptian myth, is how the leopard
got its spots. Anubis then flayed Set
and wore his bloody skin as a warning
to evildoers. By this era, Anubis was
said to command an army of demon
messengers who inflicted suffering and
death.

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN
SYMBOLS
BY: JOSIAH MAXWELL
ANKH
Ankh, also called the Egyptian
cross was a symbol of life itself.
The Ankh represented eternal life.
It signified wisdom and insight on
the highest level and it was also
a fertility symbol.see. It speedily
me addition weddings vicinity in
pleasure. Happiness commanded
an conveying breakfast in. The
ankhwas widely used as an amulet
in Ancient Egypt. Many reliefs
in Ancient Egyptian temples show
scenes where the king is offered
the ankh by the gods.
This symbolized the divine bestowal
of eternal life.
Nefertari receiving ankhOne
painting shows the goddess
Hathor holding the ankh up under
the nose of Nefertari. Queen
Nefertari received the breath of
life from the goddess herself.
Hathor was one of the great
goddesses. She was goddess
of women, female sexuality and
motherhood. Hathor was the
protector of joy, music and happiness.
This popular goddess was
goddess also to foreign lands.
Egyptian often worked in mines
in other countries; therefore she
was the natural patron goddess of
miners.
Queen Nefertari was the wife of
Ramesses the Great. She was
one of the most popular queens
of Ancient Egypt.
EGYPTIAN KA.
The “ka” is a very complex part of
the symbolism in ancient Egyptian
mythology and represents several
things: the ka is a symbol of the
reception of the life powers from
each man from the gods, it is the
source of these powers, and it is
the spiritual double that resides
with every man. The ka as a spiritual
double was born with every
man and lived on after he died as
long as it had a place to live. The
ka lived within the body of the
individual and therefore needed
that body after death. This is why
the Egyptians mummified their
dead. If the body decomposed,
their spiritual double would die
and the deceased would lose
their chance for eternal life. An
Egyptian euphemism for death
was “going to one’s ka”. After
death the ka became supreme.
Kings thus claimed to have multiple
kas. Rameses II announced
that he had over 20.
The ka was more than that
though. When the ka acted, all
was well, both spiritually and materially.
Sin was called “an abomination
of the ka”. The ka could
also be seen as the conscience
or guide of each individual, urging
kindness, quietude, honor and
compassion. In images and statues
of the ka, they are depicted
as their owner in an idealized
state of youth, vigor and beauty.
The ka is the origin and giver of
all the Egyptians saw as desirable,
especially eternal life.
Kas resided in the gods as well.
Egyptians often placated the kas
of the deities in order to receive
favors. The divine kas also served
as guardians. Osiris was often
called the ka of the pyramids.
WINGED SUN SYMBOL
he winged sun is one of the oldest
Egyptian icons and symbols
that appeared as early as the Old
Kingdom. It is usually a symbol
of royalty, divinity and power
not only in Egypt but also in the
whole Near East including the
countries of Mesopotamia, Persia
and Anatolia. In Egypt, it is a
symbol of the soul and its eternity.
It is often placed in temples as a
memento to the people of their
eternal nature. During the Middle
Kingdom, it evolved into a symbol
of protection and became a
popular protective amulet during
the Ptolemaic Period.
EGYPT PYRAMIDS
The ancient Egyptians built pyramids
as tombs for the pharaohs
and their queens. The pharaohs
were buried in pyramids of many
different shapes and sizes from
before the beginning of the Old
Kingdom to the end of the Middle
Kingdom. here are about eighty
pyramids known today from
ancient Egypt. The three largest
and best-preserved of these were
built at Giza at the beginning of
the Old Kingdom. The most wellknown
of these pyramids was
built for the pharaoh Khufu. It is
known as the ‘Great Pyramid’.

EVERYONE IN ANCIENT EGYPT USED COSMETICS: BOTH
WERE SO IMPORTANT TO THE EGYPTIANS THAT EVEN IN THEIR
